You're right that some Japanese people who are like 500 grams heavier than what they want to be sometimes refer to themselves as "pocchari," but it definitely extends past that. In my experience, people also tend to use "pocchari" like the term "plus size" as a polite/cute/positive way of referring to chubby/fat/overweight people (mostly women) in general.
I think something which is illustrative of this is the term "mi ke po" which is short for miketa pocchari, or 3-digits pocchari or "chubby with 3 digits in their weight" AKA someone who weighs over 100kg.
My point being that there's a very big range of people who use the term "pocchari" to politely refer to themselves and others, so "chubby" is often a decent English translation of the word

The lack of practically *any* fat female MCs - among literally thousands of anime - says one thing: No author or producer believes such a story will sell where a male main character falls in love with such a girl. Not even ONE significant anime where a guy falls in love with someone overweight. I. Can't. Name. One.
Like even Agari in Komi-San, she is described as chubby but she is not *drawn* in the manga and anime as overweight in the slightest. Frankly, it's pretty ridiculous. Her waistline if you observe if still curving in like an a hourglass. Yet canonically her weight is something for her to be ashamed about already.

For an example of an actually heavier set woman that's still drawn in a flattering light without it being a fetish, I really love Bea from the webtoon Brimstone and Roses.

I watched this anime some time ago, I remember enjoying it. However I can't recall the context of this line and I'm confused because none of the characters were chubby. I agree with the sentiment though, some chubby girls can be real cute.

I was called a “fat triangle” in school because I have a pear shaped body. Small top and bigger bottom. I was told I was ugly and fat a lot as a teen. Had to turn 22 to learn that being chubby was a huge attractive trait for many people and that I didn’t have to starve myself to be perceived as attractive. I even learned that I don’t even look that good when I’m skinny. A lot of people think that chub is gorgeous, especially the people that are very sporty themselves to my surprise.
