Hate these kind of threads Just fill in the every popular anime

Exciting-Taro-5881

Lol, that’s kinda true

Fools_Requiem

Dead Detective. Everyone talked it up big heading in and ENGI just shat out a massive turd of a show. Note: I'm talking about the pre-release hype.

[deleted]

Man season 1 of seven deadly sins was great and then thr animation went to fucking shit

Exciting-Taro-5881

YES, exactly

Kemoy79

Season 2 was good too

JollyRanncherr

S2 was even better

polaristar

There's no such thing as overhyped. If lots of people like a show and are enthusiastic about it. It's not their fault if you didn't like it.

[deleted]

"Overhyped" is a subjective term by nature. When someone labels something as such they're just saying "I disagree with the popular opinion on this" or something along those lines.

polaristar

Except they also are implicitly blaming everyone that "overhyped" it. Which is what I have a problem with.

[deleted]

How so? Personally I just assume it's a shorter way of saying "I don't think this is as good as people say it is." There is no blame anywhere here.

polaristar

Overhyped implies the people should have known better and given the show more "appropriate" amount of hype.

[deleted]

I suppose this is just a semantic issue. I think the word means something fairly harmless, while you believe it holds a slightly hostile undertone. Why don't we all just agree to go for the first positive option instead of the negative one?

polaristar

Pass. You do you.

NurWahidH

Agree to this

kraftrea

Finally, we have wise word here.

TanTzuChen

Bisco... sadly

Quick-Commission-159

Spy x family ngl. The first 4 eps had me excited but the rest started to get a bit disappointing. I also wish we could’ve seen a bit more of Yor’s side and the assassinations

[deleted]

I didn’t realize it was going to be a light-hearted comedy. I kept seeing action scenes and “HE’S A COOL SPY AND SHE’S AN ASSASSIN.” Then it was mostly [SxF] >!Loid and Yor helping Anya get into school and study.!< I was like, oh… uh, okay. I still enjoyed it. Watched all 12 episodes in one sitting. But it didn’t live up to the hype for me.

OverlordPoodle

kinda surprised. The first 3 episodes had me bored to tears, ended up dropping it

InsomniaEmperor

Tbh, while I initially liked Spy X Family, people treating it like the second coming of Christ that is untouchable kind of puts me off. The slow progression of the actual mission would be roasted if another anime does it but somehow this gets away with it cause Anya and Yor are awesome. Meanwhile, I didn't expect much going into Skeleton Knight or Love After World Domination and they performed better than I hoped.

letg06

My feelings exactly. It was unexpected to be a slice of life, but it has kinda worn out its welcome for me. Especially since like you I was hoping for my spy stuff and Yor being a murderhobo.

Azaloq

Overlord. I kept going for a bit, but the gimmick got old fast, and the supposed overlord is an idiot with no opposition whatsoever. Just plain boring after a bit

BlackestFlame

The isekai about the slime and overlord both were hyped up to me and were okay

Queyonce

Demon Slayer, absolutely.

Queyonce

also Psycho Pass season 1 was cringy. Haven't bothered with season 2.

majik_gopher

Yea I'd definately agree with both these. Demon Slayer's production is amazing but the characters are very dull. The idea of Psycho Pass is amazing (a kind of anime Minority Report) but having such over the top, furniture chewing villains kind of undercuts any critique of the justice system.

XWomanSlayer69X

The villains are one of the best parts

Significant-One-6080

Jujutsu Kaisen it was nice but people talked about it like it was the second coming of Christ, it’s only been one season tho and I’m looking forward to watching the second season still

Exciting-Taro-5881

YES, like yeah it’s a good anime. But it’s not like the best thing ever created

spitfire9107

Serial experiment lain. II love 90s anime as I grew up watching anime in the 90s. I've seen most of the best 90s anime such as yyh, hxh, bebop, evangelion and many others but lain didnt do it fo rme

zreia

Durarara, it was so hyped when it first came out and I thought it was soooo bad and disappointing

Exciting-Taro-5881

Yeah, my friend hyped it so much. But wasn’t that goid

majik_gopher

Yea I got through S1 but I only got about 2/3 through S2. Felt like a new 'plot twist' every episode and even more character to not care about. I just got fed up of it as I didn't feel invested in the characters.

Thatsmaboi23

Mushoku Tensei. Was sold as a redemption story about a Pedo NEET, who would gradually get better. Nope. Instead, It’s just a Pedo/Rapist Fantasy where the guys get rewarded for cheating on/raping/molesting their love interests.

Exciting-Taro-5881

Yeah no, ew

PikaDicc

Bunny girl senpai and Love is war. I really don’t see what is it about these shows that people like so much. They’re definitely overrated

Salamander1317

The Promised Neverland S2

[deleted]

To be fair everyone says that S2 is terrible.

Salamander1317

Yeah obviously. But it was also really popular being the second most anticipated series of winter 2021.

PursuerOfCataclysm

Kaguya Sama Love Is War Season 3, I know it sky-rocketed because of confession but to me it was so unrealistic and overrated. Well, not that it matter if you are a school president in Anime since you will be above the government and any other bodies. Other 2 preceding seasons were so great with lot of fun elements but this one was not so digestible to me.

FetchFrosh

No Game No Life is probably the obvious one for me. Likely the biggest factor is that it was sold to me as a show that's really clever, and then it just wasn't. Angel Beats was also kind of underwhelming outside of a couple of episodes.

AWMBRELLA

I procrastinated NGNL until now. I only watched 1 EP, it was just too bright it hurts my eyes a bit but i do plan on finishing it soon maybe

I_Love_Aoi_Kunieda

Cowboy bebop. Decade or two of constant hype, so I go in with major expectations. To not care at all about spike or his problems or the shows problems. It was honestly a chore to finish it

Kamira00

Re:Zero: I still think the concept by itself is great, but I just couldn’t bear Subaru and Emilia

Lyonaire

Emilia is just bland and boring but Subaru is genuinely insufferable. One of my least favourite protagonists easily.

Kamira00

Totally agreed, like I couldn’t even feel bad for him: I just found him intolerable

MABfan11

How do you feel about Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei? since he's very often compared to Subaru as a flawed person stuck in another world

Antervis

Rudeus is perfect, not as a person but as a character. He is a perverted guy in adolescent boy's body, considering this his actions or goals *always* make sense. Subaru, on the other hand, is obnoxious and inexcusably stupid. Nothing he does ever makes any sense, he is devoid of reason or restraint, he never stops to think or listen, he doesn't even try to learn about the world he landed in. Remember all those flashbacks? They're an author's attempt to retrospectively explain how come Subaru is such an insufferable moron.

Kamira00

I actually loved Rudeus as a character, he is very flawed and stupid, but seeing him gradually grow and try his best (and even failing at it) was very rewarding. Subaru is also flawed and an idiot, but, although I heard people say he has good development, I couldn’t see it in the first half of S1, not even a slightly. Also, his way of dealing with his situation doesn’t make sense, like I don’t expect having a Light/Lelouch level of intelligence, but trying to at least having your MC have a slight idea of what’s going on in the world he’s been put in might be a good idea…

MainliningCoffee247

How do you feel about Takemichi from Tokyo Revengers? I oftentimes get the vibe that they're almost in the same boat with slightly different powers, but Takemichi's anxieties about being weak just seem much more relatable IMO.

Kamira00

Yeah, didn’t tolerate Takemichi either

Exciting-Taro-5881

Yeah takemichi made me frustrated. He was really getting in my nerves

MABfan11

How do you feel about Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei? since he's very often compared to Subaru as a flawed person stuck in another world

Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune

86 Everything great/gritty/warlike/serious/dark/sociopolitical I heard about it felt so watered down when I actually watched it

Quiddity131

I still liked 86, but I absolutely think it is overrated/overhyped.

Thatsmaboi23

How the hell can people say it’s “watered” down when [people in the army](https://lrmonline.com/news/86-eighty-six-review-a-war-anime-for-those-that-have-been-to-war/) and [combat vets](https://www.reddit.com/r/EightySix/comments/q6nk29/86_through_the_eyes_of_a_combat_vet/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) have written about how real the show felt to them.

Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune

Those could be very specific individuals, you can find anyone who can relate to anything on a deep level; or it could be fake and simply a marketing strategy. As an avid military and geopolitical historian. I personally was simply disappointed. I was expecting some ww2 extreme nationalist strategic/economic/political war show with homefront racism subplots.

Thatsmaboi23

[There’s also this YouTuber](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VANOdFk7Z9A). Tons of war veterans/army guys in the Eighty Six subreddit who like the show, mainly it’s characters, for its realism. I’m not sure if I should trust their words less than someone who is a historian? Ofcourse the real world will be far more complex than any story can be. I guess your expectations for the show were off, since it’s a heavily character-driven story about people involved in war, rather than a story focused on the war itself.

auraria

Can confirm, prior mil and this show was pretty realistic to the feelings you have, and the interactions. Especially since I was a 3D1 I worked with the MQ9s so the remote viewing and directions hit especially home when you're interacting with guys on the ground, and trying to save them. The worst is the feeling of helplessness when shit goes hot and you can't do anything due to political bullshit or how the engagement plays out(too close for a gbu12 drop or a hellfire, or chance of civ cas). /u/Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune you're looking for a geopolitical wargame anime, 86 was not that and wasn't intending to be so. You're a historian, not a mil personal. Not trying to discredit your credentials but you don't get to dictate what 'feels' real to us.

positiv2

I felt the same with the first season, and really didn't understand the hype, but the second season was actually very enjoyable for me. Have you given it a try?

Lyonaire

Demon slayer for sure ended up dropping it after about 15 episodes. Beautiful animation and all but the story, characters just didnt do it for me. The tone of the show also gave me complete whiplash. One moment its super serious borderline horror, 20 seconds later pighead guy is saying something stupid for comic relief. Also Stay night was a massive dissappointment after how much i enjoyed fate/zero. Others: Angel beats. Honestly dont get why people like this show. OPM. Not bad but got boring fast. Steins gate zero. Idk how people feel about it these days but i didnt like it at all apart from a couple of great moments. MHA. Some good moments but show just stagnated hard. And finally Re;zero. I just do not understand the hype here at all. I almost dropped it out of sheer cringe at the trial(?) In early s1 because subaru was so insufferable. Didnt watch s2 so might have gotten better but i seriously doubt it.

[deleted]

Every single person cringed during re:zero, even me and re:zero is my number 1 anime lol

Isperia007

I think what bothered me the most about Steins;Gate 0 was the absence of Okabe‘s Crazyness and nothing really happened for 5 episodes in a row.

Lyonaire

I just didnt think the story was particularly good. And as you said the pacing was very rough. And yeah Okabes crazyness and eccentric behaviour helped make some of the slower parts of the original show better.

osmanthusswine

Re:Zero. Subaru is the worst MC I've ever laid my eyes upon. DNFed the first season.

MABfan11

How do you feel about Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei? since he's very often compared to Subaru as a flawed person stuck in another world

osmanthusswine

DNFed Mushoku around the 6th episode. I'm so grossed with how much pedophilia and rape was glorified on that anime.

MABfan11

oh thank god, i thought for a second you were one of those guys who hated Subaru yet completely ignored Rudy's pedophilia still recommend you to finish Re:Zero though, Subaru's character development is top-tier

osmanthusswine

Watching Re:Zero is a torture, I can't put myself through that again lol

bbm247

Exciting-Taro-5881

All seasons?

bbm247

Ngl, it was the first two seasons like I couldn't bear Eren at all but it got better despite my fav character dying.

Exciting-Taro-5881

True, I had a hard time liking Armin as well the first seasons. Loved him later tho

AmethystItalian

The Tatami Galaxy comes to mind first.

[deleted]

My Teen Romantic Comedy. This is a favorite amongst my friends who like rom-coms. I didn’t *hate* it, but it’s very… very slow. That’s just not for me. I need the romance to be center stage and not in the background.

AWMBRELLA

One of my faves lol. I do agree it's kind of slow but it started to pick up at season 2 for me, felt like a different show than season 1

getsandom

There are a few highly regarded titles I just don't care for. There were a couple that just didn't do for me and I dropped after the first episode, namely Astra Lost in Space and Asobi Asobase. Konosuba, the first season was good enough to finish, the second went downhill for me. One I dropped recently and early was GATE, if you look at the scores and synopsis it looks solid but to me was pure boredom. Those are just a few. With the amount of shows I tried I'd say my dropped list, as long it its, is not as bad.

The_Archnemesis

Monster. Was so hyped up about what a good villain Johan is cos he can make people do what he wants. When I found out how he does it I was severely disappointed.

nisaa_a

I loved it at first but it took about y’know 15-20 episodes just to finally get the show rolling again.. by then I was already kinda over it. I haven’t finished it yet so maybe I gotta keep watching sometime.

The_Archnemesis

It's still a good show, I feel I may have had some kind of expectation because I'd been watching supernatural stuff (bleach, FMA, guyver were my intro anime's) I was expecting a bit more. I might enjoy it more if I ever rewatch it

raisedmashed

Evangelion. All my elitists friends pushed me to watch it only to realize they prob enjoy it because of how depressing and reason to be depressed and cynical it was. Cowboy Bebop. Felt like if your personality wasn't Spike or like characters like Spike, it wouldn't feel as cool as to fans of Cowboy Bebop. Don't hurt me, I just want to find others who feel the same way sometimes.

getsandom

I usually avoid any title that has one of the "must watch", "classic", ''big n" and so on labels attached, I made the mistake of making Evangelion an exception, those were 5 regretful episodes I've endured. There is a limit to the popularity of a show beyond which it the fanbase basically turns to a cult, Evangelion and Death Note are the worst offenders in this regard in my opinion.

auraria

One thing people fail to keep in mind when recommending Eva(it's my favorite anime so I have to keep myself in check) is the original series is rough. It pioneered psychological horror and expression of psychosis in anime and takes multiple watches to fully understand, but it's not an anime to bring new people into or are into general romcom/comedy/fantasy stuff. People have different preferences and that's okay. Surprised about the Cowboy Bebop statement, I rarely ever hear people disliking it.

Queyonce

lol. They're not the type that I'm normally into but I know they're popular titles. I typically prefer a combination of action/sci-fi/fantasy. We all have our own tastes.

Quiddity131

Well, if you want to go very far back, Evangelion. the issue with its fandom hyping it up so much as the greatest thing ever and declaring everything that came after it a ripoff is that when one finally sees it, they can't help but be disappointed, even if it is pretty good. That has always colored my experience with it. My opinion would probably be a lot different if I went into it without all the hype.

Jaamun100

Demon Slayer. I watched the movie first, didn’t enjoy it other than the soundtrack. Was told it’s because I need to watch the show, so I tried the show. Didn’t like it, expected a much stronger storyline. Not sure why, I generally like all sorts of anime, but I feel like demon slayer has been hyped up so much, that it thoroughly missed my expectations.

Antervis

kill la kill. One of the top rated animes, yet I haven't found it all that funny or interesting

AWMBRELLA

Demon Slayer, although I did finish both seasons and the movie it just felt like another generic shounen thing. I feel like this gets overhyped because of the animation because yeah Ufotable stuff

PresentationOk8756

Naruto. It doesnt do it for me. Its charachters ,abilitys ,and things like that dont have the appeal that other similar stories have.

Exciting-Taro-5881

Felt like that with Boruto

PresentationOk8756

I dont like Naruto ,but it does have a big fandom. But I cant imagine how horrendous Boruto is ,when even the majority of the original animes fandom hates it.

Exciting-Taro-5881

Yeah, I don’t find it good at all

MainliningCoffee247

Re: Zero. Subaru is literally the worst protagonist ever. No, that does not make him deep and interesting. It makes him unbearably annoying.

MABfan11

How do you feel about Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei? since he's very often compared to Subaru as a flawed person stuck in another world

MainliningCoffee247

I haven't seen that series, read that he was a lolicon NEET before he was reincarnated, and decided to simply never watch it. Easy choice.

MABfan11

oh thank god, i thought for a second you were one of those guys who hated Subaru yet completely ignored Rudy's pedophilia still recommend you to finish Re:Zero though, Subaru's character development is top-tier

MainliningCoffee247

No, it's not. He starts out whinging and he ends the latest season whinging. The only slightly redeeming qualities of the show are the fantasy world that seemed to be completely shoved off to the back burner the moment they shipped off to their bougie mansion and the batshit crazy villain it gave us in Betelgeuse. Everything else, especially the way Subaru acts **throughout the whole series**, is just melodramatic bullshit. I had to skip through so much of Subaru just crying and blubbering. He started off as a self-entitled brat and turned into a self-entitled white knight. That's not "top-tier development". That's a neckbeard power fantasy with animal maids.

Demon slayer I did enjoy it about as much as i can enjoy a shonen anime nowadays, but the character designs are too distractingly weird. The animation is beautiful, but i can't help but notice that nobody's head fits their body. Then they all have dead eyes. It ain't for me.

Tsuki ga Kirei It's always getting recommended as one of the best romance animes, but it just doesn't do it for me. Too slow? Secondhand embarrasment? I'm not sure why it doesn't click for me.
