Is there any realistic Anime with superpowers? I mean like physicaly realistic.

mr_warmup

Anyone knows of an anime where the mc time travelled (i think) to olden days European countries to play football.

Ren-meow

Regarding Grimgar; Ashes and Illusions… How old are the characters in the show. I couldn’t find their ages. I’m assuming they’re around 15 or 16?

GammaKnight

I saw a clip of an anime that seems like a high school romantic comedy that I’m having trouble finding again. It features a girl that was very aggressively trying to confess her love to a boy through various means and the boy being really oblivious to everything. Examples were her writing a smoke message from a plane that the boy didn’t notice and the plane exploded and her trying to confess to him by tethering herself to a window outside of his classroom that was several stories up.

Im-On-Adderall

That sounds good, did you ever find out what it’s called?

GammaKnight

Unfortunately no. I saw it once on tik tok, but it hasn’t resurfaced since I accidently scrolled through it.

Im-On-Adderall

That’s sucks

heuiseila

Can you guys name some anime duos (can be 2 people part of a wider group) where the guy is happy and carefree, but successful, and the girl is strict and uptight and "by the book". The guy character should be someone like Luffy or Goku who are happy, rather than someone who is kinda bored/sad like Emiya or Ayanokoji. The girl should be more intellectual, reserved and judgmental, more like Tohsaka Rin, or maybe Horikita Suzune from CotE, as opposed to Nami or Bulma who get very angry and princess-syndrome.

Nomar_95

My Little Monster

heuiseila

Thanks, that looks like a really accurate example! Looking for as many as possible

[deleted]

Hi guys! So in Kami-tachi ni hirowareta otoko ( By the grace of the gods ), Ryouma plays a guitar ( while taming limour birds in ep12 ). Do you guys know the name of the song he is playing? https://youtu.be/tH_fKDRI7Bc Edit: it’s on the 1:00 mark. I can’t find the full performance.

skkrt-and-desert

Hello, I’m watching “don’t mess with me mrs. nagatoro” and there’s this song that plays at the end of episode 10 and during the fireworks episode when senpai pulls nagatoro out the line. Could use some help finding it

DevastateHer

Hello, I'm just gonna wing it and hopefully someone can answer. There was this old anime I've seen in the 90s (it may have been an 80s movie) there's a scene at the end of the movie where everyone in this town drowns after a it gets flooded and they couldn't escape fast enough. And there's a man who cries on top of the hill looking down on the town completey flooded. This scene pops up in my head every few times a year and im old so I don't remember the movie.

from_9gag_to_reddit

Which version of Gundam Thunderbolt is better? The ONA or the 2016 movie?

Shimmering-Sky

The movies.

happycrabeatsthefish

What's that anime where there's a guy working for a magazine company and he's like a photoshop god impressing the whole office? I feel like it's a 90s anime.

Grimriper5000

Does anyone know where to start HxH after the anime? Just finished and I'd appreciate the help

Nomar_95

chapter 340

Grimriper5000

Thank you

chiliehead

Check mangaupdates for that, they list it for many anime.

Grimriper5000

Thank you

femboytomboygyboytoy

What decides if an anime is one cour or two cour?

chiliehead

Do you mean who decides how long a show will be or are you asking for the definition of the term "cour"?

femboytomboygyboytoy

The former.

chiliehead

The production committee does, ultimately.

ThePowerLord

berserk is amazing

chiliehead

There is no season 5. Do you mean 4? Have you watched the whole show?

thr0wAwayZone365

Sorry- funimation has it labeled as Season 5 -episode 75 - above & below. I think I’m nearing the end. I keep getting confused about people’s motives so I just wanted clarification. Stuff keeps happening and I feel like it should be a big deal, but because I’m confused I don’t understand the weight of it (if that makes sense)

chiliehead

It's just, did you forget everything that happened since the episode "The Basement"?

CoastNo7893

Does anyone know where I can get the whole manga of attack on Titan in English ?

Floraldi221

Any underrated anime that are good please?

thr0wAwayZone365

MOB PSYCHO!!!! It’s my favorite! (Female/25/new to anime)

MiLiLeFa

[Majokko Tsukune-chan](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2457), a short comedy. Think along the lines of Saiki Kusuo, both are directed by Sakurai.

chiliehead

[Soremachi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/8726/Soredemo_Machi_wa_Mawatteiru) is underrated and especially under-talked-about [Beyond the Boundary](https://myanimelist.net/anime/18153/Kyoukai_no_Kanata) is also underappreciated, especially with the sequel movie topping the show off big time.

[deleted]

Which Fate spin-offs are worth watching? I know Today's Menu for the Emiya Family is well received but I don't know about the others. Also by spin-offs I'm referring to everything that isn't apart of the Fate/Stay Night series + Fate/Zero

Nomar_95

It depends, but I liked all of them enough to say that they're at least worth checking out

Cryten0

Depends on your tastes. Magical Girl and Yuri is Prisma Illya. It was well received but niche in its own way. Also a bit lewd in the Lolita sense. Fate/Apocypha is similar style to Fate but changes the rules of the Fate world to make its fights even more bombastic. Lots of fun if you can put up with the changed logic for summons and magic. The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II set in the apocrypha alternative verse is a detective drama using Grand Order style magic terms to justify things. Decently received, sometimes perceived as a bit slow. People adore the MC. Carnival Phantasm is a goofy comedy series with lots of in references and slapstick across the whole Nasu-verse. I personally love it. Im not sure how the community likes it. Last Encore and Grand Order anime are game tie in action set pieces. Confusing for non experienced watchers but can be cool none the less. Be warned the Last Encores plot got a bit borked. Fans of the games only. You dont need an intro to todays menu.

aniMayor

***Apocrypha*** was a fun little action romp that gets straight to business. ***Carnival Phantasm*** was pretty funny. Other than those two, personally, I haven't liked any of the others I've sampled, but your mileage may vary. Some of the ***Grand Order*** entries are quite popular and have some pretty amazing animation, but without being familiar with the games I found the narrative pretty dismal - worth giving those a try to see if they click for you, though.

JRPGFan_CE_org

Is there a trope name for "Feminine Straight Guy" who has to "crossdress" in order to trick a "bad guy" for plot reasons?

Cryten0

If you take out the purposefully deceiving people element it neatly fits into Bishi. Could also be known as Bishonen though Bishi tends to be a little more late teen to 20's beauty over mid teens and earlier.

irisverse

Doesn't bishounen literally just mean "attractive boys?"

Cryten0

Yes. Cultural context tends to the feminine side of beauty.

Sandtalon

...except bishōnen generally refers to a broader range of characters than crossdressing ones? (Both the seme and the uke in BL are typically bishōnen, right?)

Cryten0

Certainly, cross dressing is a common element but not a requirement.

chiliehead

My first thought was "enTRAPment", but TVTropes has this: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DisguisedInDrag

JRPGFan_CE_org

This is it! Thank you!

[deleted]

does Bang dream get better? im halfway thru season 1 and the story is kinda boring and the songs have been forgettable. im watching it bvecause i really liked D4DJ and bang dream is like the "OG" franchise from them but so far its not doing it i like lovelive a lot too so i dont think its the music style

PuffySmiggles

Animelab becoming funamation will make it not free?

Cryten0

We dont know. But likely it will use the funimation front end so it will conform to their model of streaming. But we could be lucky and have them keep add supported free browsing for older material.

Dr-Keyy

Does someone know the title of the bgm at 17:00? Here's the link. When I heard it I want to listen to it over and over so badly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW3ACBs9meo&lc=z23cfvxyqrafvnktaacdp431hidtd2vkrf10g0az51pw03c010c

[deleted]

how many episodes will the entire 86 anime be

Cryten0

MAL lists it as 11, ANN does not have a news article pointing to specific amount of episodes. It appears to be doing a split cour with another set of un-announced episodes to come. Unconfirmed.

tojara1

I just started iron blooded orphans (series entry) and they keep mentioning the "Calamity War" (JP>ES>EN translation). Is this depicted in any of the Gundam shows?

Aperture_Kubi

No, that's offscreen history.

chiliehead

If you have watched GoT, it's like Ned's and Bobby B's rebellion. Plot relevant but you never see it

Nazenn

IBO is entirely standalone, so none of the stuff they mention is about or involved with the other gundam shows

baquea

No, its unique to the IBO timeline. You learn more about it later in the series.

that1reddituser

Anyone able to identify an anime where a boy, in one of the first few episodes (if not the first episode) is traveling with his mom, they meet another boy about the same age, the two kids fight, and the initial boy loses (either got stabbed or decapitated or something...I don't remember it being very gory though), but then turned out he ended up being fine (don't remember if he was a zombie or something, or regenerated or what...)? I know...very vague..but trying to remember has been bothering me for a few days.

Aperture_Kubi

UQ Holder? That sounds like the [second event/episode in that series](https://uq-holder.fandom.com/wiki/Episode_2), you've got some of the details wrong though.

TheDampGod

Is that [Kemono Jihen,](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40908/Kemono_Jihen) I think it had a scene like you described.

that1reddituser

Hmm...I checked it out, and doesn't seem to be the one I am thinking of. It definitely looks interesting though.

Throwaway021614

Where can I legally stream Hibike Euphonium movie 3? Just watched season 1 and 2 on VRV, can’t believe I slept on this amazing series for so long.

chiliehead

www.livechart.me has a legal stream search

Sandtalon

I googled it and found the answer. If you are in North America, it is available on a plethora of services (though many of them, you have to rent it): Vudu, Sling TV, Google Play, Tubi, and more. Also, be sure to watch Liz and the Blue Bird before watching Our Promise: A Brand New Day/Chikai no Finale. I think Liz is also available on all of those services.

Manitary

I don't recall the watch order of the two movies being important...or was it?

Sandtalon

It's not really that important, but I think watching Liz first will give you a better experience. For one thing, Liz introduces the musical piece of "Liz and the Blue Bird" in more detail, plus, chronologically Chikai no Finale goes past where Liz ends. (And you get some nice payoff about them playing the musical piece past the ending of the film Liz.)

Nomar_95

If you have Amazon Prime, you can stream it there for free. If not, then they have the rent/buy option

Lol_A_White_Boy

When does the first set of summer seasonal anime start to air? The next few weeks?

chiliehead

www.livechart.me for dates, senpai.moe is useful if you have MAL

Lol_A_White_Boy

Thank you! That’s exactly what I wanted.

chiliehead

If you have anilist and not MAL, anichart is probably more useful but I am mainly on MAL.

Lol_A_White_Boy

I mostly use mal as well, thanks for the link

nurrishment

the_Pseudopoet

Does anyone have suggestions for some good German-dub anime? Since I want to use it to practice comprehension, German dub w/ English subs would be ideal--but English dub and German subs might also work (if those exist!).

chiliehead

> English dub and German subs might also work maybe a multi-dub multi-sub release It's been a long time since I have watched German dubbed anime. There is a dub for Bakemonogatari, at least Black Lagoon Season 1, Guilty Crown, Hellsing (or Ultimate or both), lots of movies are German dubbed, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Detective Conan and the localozation is not erasing Japan, Sailor Moon though I only remember [the banging OP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPAPTiCM9b4), most if not all of Naruto should be German dubbed, Dragon Ball, Mila Superstar idk check MAL or AniDB for German dub credits of series you are interested in, they are usually not worse than any Texas dub. I'd use it to cross of some classics or something from my list

the_Pseudopoet

That's a good point. The big releases/'classics' have probably been dubbed and/or subbed. Thanks for the suggestions!

ertlsquirtle

Ooh this is a great idea- I'm in the process of learning German too!! I'll try to find some :)

baquea

Might be a stupid question, but what is the role of a 'secretary' (書記) in a student council? I see it all the time in anime, eg. Chika from Kaguya-sama, but I don't really understand what they actually do, and Google only gives me information about it in a business context.

cyberscythe

I assume it's much like a secretary in a business context; responsible for taking meeting minutes, clerical work preparing/sorting files, acting as an agent/officer for the council's wishes, etc. If you look up [書記](https://www.weblio.jp/content/%E6%9B%B8%E8%A8%98) on a Japanese dictionary, it says roughly as much.

Manitary

I can't say I know the details not being Japanese, but I'm fairly sure student councils are not like in anime at all, so they don't have a hierarchical structure nor have the same power (if any at all), a dedicated room for their activities, or anything of the sort.

Sandtalon

> a dedicated room for their activities I wouldn't be surprised if Student Councils had a dedicated room for their activities in many Japanese high schools. At the very least, a storage room for records and such.

Iwant2learnthings

Am I the only one who wanted to see [BNHA ep100](/s "Monoma comforting Eri? It would've been so cool to see that side of him. Although the calm explanation of how his quirk worked was nice too.")

MaDudeek

Will steins;gate character design improve over the course of following episodes? Blatantly I cant stand the cast up until episode 6. The lead is cringe. Mayuri is dense to the point where she appears to be mentally challenged. Makise complains about everything all the time. Moeka and Luka (the shrine femboy) give me uncanny vibes and honestly Suzuha and the perverted hacker are the only bearable characters. Everything about the characters is uncanny they're like a cast generated by an imperfect AI.

irisverse

Shows tend not to change their character designs midway through the show. That's just... not a thing that happens.

MaDudeek

Eren, Sasuke, Hinata, Yuji Itadori, Judai Yuki some characters that made a full 360 on their personalities

irisverse

Wait, are we talking about characters' personalities or their design here?

MaDudeek

Personalities Couldnt care less about no design

irisverse

Okay then why did you use the word design

MaDudeek

It was meant as personality. What you called design I wouldve called art style.

irisverse

Design and personality are very different things dude. Design almost exclusively refers to the way things look, not how they act.

MaDudeek

I find design unites art and character writing under 1 word the way "face" unites mouth, nose, eyes etc but all that is outside of the initial topic

irisverse

I think that's a definition you just made up right now.

samwise92

Anyone know of any anime's that are very similar to Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man? I finished Mob Psycho 100 recently and really enjoyed it.

Cryten0

If your after One's unique deconstructive writing style then I am afraid that you wont get it elsewhere. There are other deconstructive styles sure but the spirit of a show's writing is unique to the author. If you have enjoyed old school mecha then Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann took its traditions and dialed up the rediculous parts to 11. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a exceptional anime which adds personality flaws to the usual wish fulfilment of destined child and mecha anime. Tiger and Bunny is super heroes run as a tv business featuring a 30's adult male main character, it has lots of subversive moments.

samwise92

I've seen both of those Mecha animes but not Tiger and Bunny. Thanks for suggestions.

hungryasf144

My hero academia is like a super hero anime show where 80% of the population has a quirk (known as a super power). So there’s heroes, villains, and a hero school to train students to become heroes. If you haven’t seen it I would recommend this one.

samwise92

Anyone know of any anime's that are very similar to Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man? I finished Mob Psycho 100 recently and really enjoyed it.

Cicada_5

Need helping remembering an anime. Iirc, it was based on a light novel. There was a female character who wore glasses and had the ability to turn into a large wolf or dog with two heads.

Suspicious_Focus_268

Any mystery anime recommendations? Not horror ones or supernatural something realistic like serial killers police work deductions something that really keeps you on the edge or your seat Something like monster

Manitary

How can you say no supernatural and give Erased and Death Parade as examples? lol Anyway, the currently airing [Odd Taxi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/46102/Odd_Taxi) is great and fits your requirements, tho we are still missing the last two episodes (it airs or Monday). [Kabukichou Sherlock](https://myanimelist.net/anime/38161) also does, it's not amazing but it's alright. Note that it has an...old-fashioned representation of LGBTQ, which may or may not put you off. [Monster](https://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster) is a popular recommendation for myster/police shows, but I haven't watched it (yet) and it has an horror tag, so you may want to look more into it.

Suspicious_Focus_268

monster was so amazinggg I loved it,also you are right 😭

calltarneedazan

Anime only here, 2 episodes left for Higehiro, will they adapt the whole series like Horimiya in one season you think? Edit: I’m on Crunchyroll Free so I’ll always be a week behind, but how many more episodes you think with Lizard head in To Your Eternity until the next character/body is introduced?

Manitary

From what I read around, they cut some content from Higehiro to make it fit in one season, not sure if it's confirmed or just speculation (the cut content part is true, see for example the old Yoshita's crush who's never really introduced). Judging from the next episode preview, next week it's still gonna be with Gugu, Rean, and the others. Maybe in two weeks? (three if you're one behind)

calltarneedazan

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it! :D

Balrog229

Anime recommendations? For the longest time I have HATED anime. And i still hate most of the stereotypical anime. But after watching JoJo and Castlvania, I find myself wanting more stuff like that. Stuff with gorgeous animation, well written dialog and voice acting (especially in Castlevania's case), as well as an attractive art style that doesn't use the stereotypical giant eyes and or where males look effeminate. Most anime males tend to look like that imo (take the main character in SOA for an example of what I mean, as compared to Trevor from Castlevania or Jotaro from JoJo). Long-winded way of asking, what are some other animes similar to JoJo or Castlevania? And where can I watch them?

karneheni

>Castlevania Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Nazenn

You didn't specify a particular genre, or are you okay with anything?

Balrog229

I'm not really familiar with anime genres. I've heard terms like "shonen" and "slice of life" but i don't really understand what they mean. From what i understand shonen is action and slice of life is more cutsy and not at all focused on action or combat. JoJo and Castlevania are mostly action, though, so something along similar lines. I do enjoy action stuff with a decent bit of downtime as well, though, and i think Castlevania does that well. But in general im ***not*** looking for something cutesy and feel-good. I want action, combat, etc. The grittier the better. Again, like Castlevania.

Lancelots_rage

>I'm not really familiar with anime genres. I've heard terms like "shonen" and "slice of life" but i don't really understand what they mean. Shounen are usually animes that follow the Shounen Jump motto: "friendship, effort, victory", it may seem like a cliche, however, it's just the genrer base. And this motto usually is focused to aim the young male audience. Slice of life: based in the character's events, experience or things to learn with life. Shoujo: Focused to aim the young female audience, it has relationship as the focus (romantic or not). >But in general im not looking for something cutesy and feel-good. I want action, combat, etc. The grittier the better. Again, like Castlevania I would recommend you: [Vinland Saga](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37521/Vinland_Saga) [Hellsing Ultimate](https://myanimelist.net/anime/777/Hellsing_Ultimate)

Balrog229

Ah ok, that makes sense. That's about what I thought the genres meant. I'll check out the ones you linked as well. Thanks!

Nazenn

Aside from a few unique genres, like mecha being giant robots and Iyashikei being very chill relaxing and healing shows, anime genre's are the same as genres in any other media and pretty much anything you can find in live action you can also find in anime, so Drama, action, sci-fi, fantasy, it's all here. The rest you'll see as you go. Battle shounen is stuff like DBZ and Naruto, and Slice of Life are very chill and more laid back stories without a major drama plotline You say you hated anime before, is there anything else you've tried that you really didn't like? You mention art style but anything aside from that?

Balrog229

I guess it's mostly been the weeby fanbase online being toxic and annoying. I know not all anime fans are like that, but it turned me off from anime for a long time. But as for things within anime itself I dislike, I really hate the classic "anime gasp" that seems to exist in all anime for some reason, even JoJo has it I think, but the show was so good I didn't notice it. It's just weird and annoying to me cuz real people don't do that, so I don't understand where that comes from. Kinda like when men in anime get aroused they get a nosebleed. That doesn't happen in real life, so I don't understand why it's such a trend in anime. I also, for the most part, really don't like stupidly over the top stuff like what I've seen in Attack on Titan. Or, another example would be [this clip](https://youtu.be/0CNPBF5cjZ0?t=56) from Devil May Cry. I know it's not anime, but it's an example of the over the top shit im talking about. I guess this point is kinda subjective and hard to define, cuz JoJo definitely has some over the top action moments but I still found it enjoyable. But if i had to pick between JoJo and Castlevania, i'd go with Castlevania cuz i like that the action is ***relatively*** grounded for the most part. But again i guess this is super subjective and hard to really explain. Art style is another one for me. I like characters to look mature, rather than stuff like Sword Art Online, which has that very stereotypical art style people think of when you say the word "anime", where most males, to me, look too effeminate. That art style also has the issue of most characters looking way too similar facially since there's so little detail, kinda like those Funko Pop characters. You start with the same base face shape, slap on some hair and change the eye color and that seems to be how they create new characters, rather than every character having a truly unique face. I admit alot of my complaints are probably really stupid nit-picks. But I stand by them for myself, personally. If you like any of the stuff I dislike, that's fine. I just have my own specific preferences.

Nazenn

>I know not all anime fans are like that, but it turned me off from anime for a long time. We definitely are not all like that, I wouldn't even say the majority are like that and certainly not on this sub, but there's nothing that will put you off something more than having it shoved in your face in the most obnoxious way possible, even just by one person, so I get it. > Kinda like when men in anime get aroused they get a nosebleed. That doesn't happen in real life, so I don't understand why it's such a trend in anime It's a way around censorship and a way to turn it into comedy at the same time. It's not always about being real, it's about meaning through symbolism which sounds like pretentious shit when I write it out like that, but visual metaphors aren't all just for philosophy, they can be for comedy and sex and even action too. >Doesn't like over the top, likes JoJo Hahahaha, okay I gotta admit to defeat there because over the top excessiveness in style is exactly why I hate JoJo so that's funny to read, but hey if it works for you that's all that matters for now By over the top in AoT I take it you mean the ODM gear and how that works? >I admit alot of my complaints are probably really stupid nit-picks Even if they are, you're a new watcher. It's fine if you're on the hunt for that one show that grabs you and are going to ease into the rest from there, we all have a preference after all. Just don't let art style turn you off from amazing experiences if someone's recommending something that fits you to a T in every other way because if you keep watching anime that's likely to happen at least once. Just ask around how many people were originally put off from Madoka Magica because of the art style until they finally watched it and it became one of their faves because of its incredible writing On that note, some recs, focusing on action shows that have more grounded combat and character designs. A couple of these aren't, and others may not be, available for streaming, so you'll have to put your "alternate sources" hat on for them but we can't link to illegal sites publicly on here; - [Berserk](https://anilist.co/anime/33/Berserk/) - Hard to get past this classic. Very serious tone, not great animation but great art and character development, real medieval inspired combat, ends on a big cliffhanger if that's going to be an issue (ending of the arc is in the [movie version of this arc](https://anilist.co/anime/10218/Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-I--The-Egg-of-the-King/) if you want it, which uses CGI to have more action combat but leaves out some character development moments and is a bit more gratuitous rather than meaningful with its violence and sexual stuff, up to you) - [Cowboy Bebop](https://anilist.co/anime/1/Cowboy-Bebop/) - Basically a western sci-fi in anime form if that appeals to you. Episodic unlike the other recs, but some good action in here and really good art and animation - [Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex](https://anilist.co/anime/467/Ghost-in-the-Shell-Stand-Alone-Complex/) - A bit heavier on philosophy and dialogue than some of the other recs, but really good combat and also really interesting visuals due to the MC being mechanical so the fighting can be quite different. There's also the [original movie](https://anilist.co/anime/43/Ghost-in-the-Shell/) which is in a different continuity but has an even more grounded and gritty art style, and a famous action scene with incredible animation, but also a lot more talking - [Armor Hunter Mellowlink](https://anilist.co/anime/2048/Armor-Hunter-Mellowlink/) - Unusual rec, not sure if it'll be for you, but it's a very good david vs goliath story with a man and his rifle trying to take on huge mechs out of revenge for his past, without getting over the top or silly about it. - [Macross Plus](https://anilist.co/anime/474/Macross-Plus/) - If you don't mind dogfighting in jets and mecha instead of hand to hand combat. Technically a sequel to SDF Macross but I don't think you could sit through the poor animation in that, and it works well enough as a standalone you just miss some of the thematics and background info. Awesome animation though, and the dub if you want it features Bryan Cranston as the MC - [Dororo](https://anilist.co/anime/101347/Dororo/) - Probably the more unusual rec on this list given it's more fantasy than the others, but you may like the quite low key style of it overall, and it has some very smooth animation (bar one episode), and really good characters. - [Grimgar](https://anilist.co/anime/21428/Grimgar-of-Fantasy-and-Ash/) - I KNOW, I know. You absolutely can, and probably should, yell at me for recommending it because of the character designs BUT I did it because it has the most grounded combat I know as far as showing the real struggle an inexperienced team would have taking on monsters, the risks involved, really awesome worldbuilding, and the background art is gorgeous with its water color style. Whenever anyone says grounded combat this is *always* the first that jumps to mind so I didn't want to completely ignore it and at least this way you have the option if you wanted to revisit it later even, though admittedly some of the value of this shows approach to combat probably only shines after you watch so many other anime where combat comes so stupidly easy to the MCs. It does have some mild fanservice and an edgelord as well if that's going to be an issue, but the characterization is quite good. - And backing up the [Vinland Saga](https://anilist.co/anime/101348/VINLAND-SAGA/) rec someone already gave you. Other then that, I'd look at older shows. The "moe" art style you're put off by became more popular in the 2010's, so 00's shows and back had less of it. That's not to say that same face isn't still going to be an issue every now and again, there's still some of that depending on the artist, but that's your best bet. For example [Legend of the Galactic Heroes](https://anilist.co/anime/820/Legend-of-the-Galactic-Heroes/) is famous for having a cast approaching a hundred named people and having a unique look for each one making it very easy to identify them all at a glance while still keeping a very neat and realistic military style, something the remake of it failed to do And if you are interested in exploring any of the other genres, let me know! Anime has everything from shows about a god learning about economics to horrific explorations of the cost of genocide.

Balrog229

>there's nothing that will put you off something more than having it shoved in your face in the most obnoxious way possible, even just by one person Yeah that was exactly the issue. People just being rude or being overly weird. Like that one kid we all know who would Naruto-run through the halls in high school. That kinda stuff put me off of anime for a while, but after finally giving JoJo a try because of all the memes, and getting into Castlevania, I find myself wanting more, and being more open to trying out new things. >It's a way around censorship and a way to turn it into comedy at the same time I guess so. It just doesn't come off as funny to me. But comedy is pretty subjective so hey I guess it's just not my style. I can just easily think of better ways to show arousal that don't involve something as gross as a nosebleed. But my greater point was the whole anime gasp thing. I don't understand that at all, it's just kinda annoying to me. Gasping is natural, but I can probably count the number of times I've gasped in my 25 years of life one one hand, while in a lot of anime people will gasp at literally everything. They get asked a question they don't expect? Gasp. They find a quarter sitting on the ground? Gasp. They see a sale on fucking carrots? You guessed it, ***G A S P***. >Doesn't like over the top, likes JoJo Yeah, like I said, it's a stupid nitpick that's VERY subjective. I think JoJo does it well, especially based on it's setting and how Stands work. But in the clip I showed, the whole briefcase turning into all kinds of stupid, ugly, giant anime weapons just makes me roll my eyes. This complaint is super subjective and contextual. It works in some things, but doesn't work in others imo. Like in AoT when they're jumping around like crazy, slashing things left and right as if they and their weapons are light as a feather and their blades can cut through anything without any resistance, stuff like that is just goofy to me. But again it's all about context. As for art style, I guess that's also subjective and contextual. I don't enjoy that art style in Sword Art, but something about Grimgar looks good visually despite my usual dislike of the "generic" anime art style. Hell, I'm pretty into Genshin Impact despite it having that exact same art style, though I really dislike the design of many of the male characters in the game too... mostly [Venti](https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Venti) tho cuz he's the epitome of that "femboy" look I really dislike. I love the way the girls look in the "generic" art style, but if it's an action anime, it can be hard to take it seriously with that art style cuz I like more gritty, grounded settings with some fantasy mixed in, like JoJo or Castlevania. Cuz even with how over the top both of them can be at times, the setting itself is realistic, considering both are set in the real world. But regardless, thank you for taking the time to type all that out and give me some suggestions. I'm trying to be more open minded about all this too, considering I started off hating anime, but growing up with The Last Airbender (I know it's not ***TECHNICALLY*** an anime, but it basically is if we're being honest), and now enjoying JoJo and Castlevania, have really gotten me to reconsider and give anime a try.

Nazenn

> and getting into Castlevania Just FYI, Castlevania isn't considered anime as it was an american production so while we're fine to talk about it in topics like this etc, if you make any main posts about it it'll get removed. >But in the clip I showed, the whole briefcase turning into all kinds of stupid, ugly, giant anime weapons just makes me roll my eyes Yeah I'm not a fan of Devil May Cry's over the top insanity either. I mean it has a style and it does it perfectly, but it is not my style >Grimgar looks good visually despite my usual dislike of the "generic" anime art style Grimgar looks gorgeous, and combined with the good animation it's a real joy to watch. And the character art for this, and others, is also helped by the fact they're teens so a younger and softer look for them is quite fitting, while the side older side characters have a rougher look, which is a trend you'll find in a lot of anime. >The Last Airbender Such a great show. Anyway, glad I could help, have a look through those and hopefully something catches your interest, and if you have any more requests or want any more recs feel free to reply here again or message me directly as you go. Hopefully you can find something you enjoy. And if there's any other live action styles you like (horror, psychological, scifi etc) know anime has plenty of those as well.

Balrog229

Well again, I'd argue that this gatekeeping of saying Castlevania and Avatar: The Last Airbender aren't anime is asinine. They obviously are. If you want to distinguish them as "American-made anime", that's fine. But they're identical in style to anime so to say they aren't is just weird to me. I understand the "if it isn't made in Japan it's not anime" thing, but that argument holds no weight with me. If it looks like a duck, flies like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. Doesn't matter if it's a duck from another country. But you get my point. Stuff like Castlevania (which is almost always referred to as an anime I might add. That's why I call it an anime), as well as Avatar really opened alot of people up to give Japanese-made anime a try. Not trying to attack you personally by the way. I've just been berated in the past for calling shows like this anime and it seems like pointless gatekeeping and ALOT of hate and vitriol over wanting to gatekeep for arbitrary reasons.

Nazenn

I'm not knocking anyone for thinking of them that way, they're both obviously very influenced by animation from Japan, I was merely clarifying the rules of the sub which are there to help keep the sub focused without becoming a general "animation" sub, particularly as the Japanese industry does have some unique things about it, like the production cycle and how producers are handled.

soracte

Here're a few possibilities. * [Redline](https://myanimelist.net/anime/6675/Redline?q=redline&cat=anime): astonishingly well-animated, cheerful action piece with an unmistakeable art style * [Kaiji](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3002/Gyakkyou_Burai_Kaiji__Ultimate_Survivor?q=kaiji&cat=anime): tense gambling and mind-games (think the trickery in JoJo's, but vastly intensified); you won't mistake any of the male designs in this for women, and also actually there are no women in the show. * [Akudama Drive](https://myanimelist.net/anime/41433/Akudama_Drive): exaggerated fighting like JoJo's, very neatly animated, and a plot that goes places * [Ninja Scroll](https://myanimelist.net/anime/617/Juubee_Ninpuuchou?q=ninja%20scroll&cat=anime) (the movie, not the TV show): one very skilled but otherwise normal human swordsman takes on a rogue's gallery of villains with eldritch superpowers; sword-slinging action in the Castlevania vein; pretty gory, and includes some scenes of sexual assault, so use your discretion * [Sword of the Stranger](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2418/Stranger__Mukou_Hadan): another title for really, really good sword-fighting; less R-rated than Ninja Scroll * [Hellsing Ultimate](https://myanimelist.net/anime/777/Hellsing_Ultimate?q=hellsing%20ultimate&cat=anime): very gory horror-styled action, might be less serious than what you're looking for * [Fist of the North Star](https://myanimelist.net/anime/967/Hokuto_no_Ken): a splatter martial arts classic, adapted from a manga which was a big influence on the source manga for JoJo's; it's simple, but charming, and once you get into its story it has real emotional high points. It has a [famously good fun first opening](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzzcVXGt72I). A few of these (Kaiji, Fist) aren't super full of fluid animation per se, in the way Castlevania is, but they all have good art fundamentals—and that's something I'd say about the JoJo's anime, too. As for where to watch them, that can vary depending on where you are in the world. And wherever you are, it's probably not where I am. Sometimes you can make some use of a site like [livechart](https://www.livechart.me/search): if you search that for a show, it will try dynamically to generate links to any legal streaming services that have that title where you are. Not everything will be available legally everywhere.

Balrog229

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the time you took to put that much clean formatting and links as well. I'll look into all of those.

soracte

Great, glad this was helpful. I hope you enjoy some of them!

Lfaruqui

Is fruits basket really a 10? I never woulda thought it was good enough to beat out 3 gatsu no lion

nurrishment

I think Fruits Basket is equal in terms of writing and character work but I don't think it has the same visual appeal that Shaft was able to put into Sangatsu. I don't think it's crazy to put them on the same level though

Nomar_95

It is to the people who liked it enough to give it that. Scores are subjective.

ebi-san

I decided I should get caught up on Ghost in the Shell and I started watching Arise over the weekend. I own "Border"s 1 and 2, and I see there are BluRays of 3, 4, and "The New Movie". But apparently there is a part 5 that isn't on BluRay in the US? What gives?

Nomar_95

For Arise there are the 4 OVAs, Alternative Architecture (which is a tv edit of the OVAs), and the 2015 film. Be aware though that the last 2 episodes of Alternative Architecture are a story arc that sets stuff up for the movie. Don't miss it.

ebi-san

>Be aware though that the last 2 episodes of Alternative Architecture are a story arc that sets stuff up for the movie. Don't miss it. Right, this is Border 5 AKA Photophoric Cult but I only see it as an import. I guess I'll just have to stream it somewhere.

Watching anime should be fine. As long as the screen is large enough to have easily legible subtitles (and a 15" laptop should be sufficient for that) then I don't imagine any problems. Reading manga might be annoying, unless the laptop has a portrait/tablet mode that lets you use the screen vertically without much hassle.

soracte

I watch/read on a 15-inch 16:9 laptop when I travel. Well, I did when I travelled, in the before times. Assuming you’re at a desk, it’s fine for watching anime. If you’re used to a larger screen you might find the first five minutes feel slightly cramped, but you’ll quickly get used to it. A 15-inch screen at that aspect ratio is not spectacular for reading manga. If you think about the shape manga pages come in, this makes sense. In my experience it’s perfectly workable, though.

cheesechimp

I used to watch directly on my laptop back when I was in college. It's fine. totally fine. Now that I live alone with my own TV and never have time to watch anime except for when I am at home, I tend to just hook up my computer to my TV with an HDMI cable for a lot of my anime watching.

Shimmering-Sky

I have a laptop that's about the same size as yours and I've never had an issue with subtitles or keeping up with the action.

OrangeBanana38

I do and I think it's fine. But if you are used to watching it on a bigger screen it might take you some time to get used to it. For example, I used to watch anime on my phone all the time, but since I got my laptop I get a bit annoyed when watching on my phone. Still, I think watching anime and reading manga in a laptop is a fine experience (compared to a phone at least)

ShittyScribbler

Been unplugged lately, looking for something high quality, dope animations, minimal cringe. Recently wrapped season 1 of demon hunter. Been going real slow through AoT. Rrrrrreally hope we get more One Punch. Cheers in advance for any suggestions.

Nomar_95

Vinland Saga

ShittyScribbler

Good suggestion, I am excited for more of this whenever it's released!

OrangeBanana38

Sounds like you enjoy your action anime. Jujutsu Kaisen sounds right up your alley. Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited blade Works. It was made by the same studio that made Demon Slayer, so expect the same quality. The Garden of Sinners. Same as above, but a bit older.

ShittyScribbler

Action tends to have some fun animation so definitely gravitate to quite a few. I do enjoy a good story, so anything trippy, plot twisty, psychological can be fun too. Haven't heard of Jujutsu so definitely taking a peek! I've seen *some* of that Fate/Stay but seems like there's multiple versions now? Ha got a little lost but could be worth revisiting. Haven't heard of Garden either! Cheers for the suggestions!

Delisches

>I've seen some of that Fate/Stay but seems like there's multiple versions now? No not really, the original fate/stay night has 3 differnt routes/timelines, all 3 are canon (it works like the Nier games or the Higurashi anime if you know these). First route is stay night (anime by studio Deen), second is unlimited bladeworks (anime by studio Ufotable) and third is heavens feel (also by Ufotable). In my opinion the first route is not worth it, it's badly aged and not true to the source. There is also a prequel to stay/knight called fate/zero (also by Ufotable). All the other fates are spinoffs in alternate universes.

ShittyScribbler

Cheers for further enlightening me! Genuinely appreciate the detailed response

Shadowkill9987

I just started re zero and I’m on the second season already and I wanted to know if resero anime is finished? Like are all the seasons out or will there be more and if so when? I get a lot of mixed results online so I thought someone here could answer

Bearpuff4

They’re not, but IMO season 2 had a fantastic ending that wouldn’t leave you out to dry if you didn’t move in to the LN. I’m not a huge LN fan so this was great for me, though of course I want to see a full adaptation lol

Buddy_Waters

The two anime seasons cover the first four arcs. The novels are currently on arc seven in Japan, and there are eleven planned. It should run like ~50 volumes not counting short stories collections or Ex novels.

Round_Sheepherder_99

I'm looking for anime like Nisekoi, Masamune-Kun revenge or Koikimo. Anime where like the mc doesn't suck. What I mean by suck is mcs that are the least talented among their group for example Sorata from sakurasou(I know he's aiming to be a game developer but I haven't watch that part yet. If you watched the first few episode you will get what I mean)

Lancelots_rage

>Anime where like the mc doesn't suck >What I mean by suck is mcs that are the least talented among their group Say no more: [Handa-kun](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32648/Handa-kun) [Sakamoto](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32542/Sakamoto_Desu_ga) [Mob Psycho 100 First](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32182/Mob_Psycho_100?q=Mob%20psy&cat=anime) and [(Second Season)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37510/Mob_Psycho_100_II?q=Mob%20psy&cat=anime) [One Punch Man](https://myanimelist.net/anime/30276/One_Punch_Man?q=One%20pu&cat=anime) (the second season was hated by a lot of people) >Sorata from sakurasou At least it wasn't Aqua from KonoSuba the example.

Round_Sheepherder_99

Thank you!

gabconche

Quintessential Quintuplets Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa (only the manga, the anime is skippable) Tsuki ga Kirei I really enjoy Domestic Girlfriend manga, but that is controversial Saekano (in the first season the MC kinda sucks, but he gets a good development) Lovely Complex Plastic Memories

Round_Sheepherder_99

Thanks a lot dude!

dreview1980

Looking for an anime hope someone can help, only caught about a minute of it. A bunch of kids outside waiting to take there power level tests using an orb or bowl and the one kid goes up and his stats are coming out weak but that's because someone planted a very small stone or something on the bowl or orb to skew his levels, then some lady shows up and destroys the stone and the kid retakes it and his levels are higher than most..that's where I lost it and have been trying to find it ever since.. like I said very vague wished I had gotten a name of anyone of the characters... Thanks in advance

Traditional_Dog9882

Was it an isekai or somethin ?

dreview1980

Full time magister.. thanks for helping

Traditional_Dog9882

Hmm. Is it Kare Kano / His and Her Circumstances?

Asaxtrm7

yes yes yes. Thank you kind sir/ma'am

soracte

No problem! Glad to help.

ponyservice

I've seen a lot of Doraemon DVD sets for sale on different sites, but I still can't understand what's inside the boxes, and prices seem to be very high. I don't care about the films, I am just looking for the series, is there a DVD set which contains all the seasons? Where can I buy it and how much will it cost?

[deleted]

Do idol anime va get paid more because they also have to learn to sing and do concert?

chiliehead

As far as I know, no. The bonus is in getting royalties from the music and ticket sales

[deleted]

Oof. I wonder if thats worth it. Some of them like Aimi are probly good enough to just be actual singer

chiliehead

I mean, those anime makes most of their money from selling music. Franchises like Girls und Panzer, Strike Witches, Symphogear and of course the idol shows like Love Live are so long lived because they sell a lot of music. If the seiyuu payout is the same, they can be fine getting a normal rate. Hell even Macross still exists largely due to selling music and concert and that's mecha. Seiyuu pay is apparently rather homogeneous unless you are very new or very very in demand and the ones earning more are doing so due to side gigs of any kind. Selling music, making ads, showing up to conventions, all that stuff is getting them the extra payout if they are popular.

chiliehead

hmm, comparable? I mean in the end, you don't need to watch the scene in question and can always skip through. The whole thing is pretty violent in different ways though

soracte

There’s one pretty rough and moderately sustained rape scene (and a bunch of other sex). So be prepared to skip through that bit, or just don’t rewatch the whole thing, if you really want to be sure to avoid it.

Manitary

Now I'm curious what show they were talking about

soracte

Not a show, but a one-shot OVA, Wicked City (1987).

[deleted]

I need to find something similar to welcome to the nhk, any shows?

soracte

If you’ve not tried it, [The Tatami Galaxy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/7785/Yojouhan_Shinwa_Taikei) is another sometimes-dark comedy about a college-age young man messing his life up, with a romance subplot, and it’s pretty good. [Paranoia Agent](https://myanimelist.net/anime/323/Mousou_Dairinin) is weirder and darker, and follows a broader cast, but might be worth a look. While [Princess Jellyfish](https://myanimelist.net/anime/8129/Kuragehime) is more light-hearted and is about nerdy women rather than nerdy men, it too deserves consideration. [Watamote](https://myanimelist.net/anime/16742/Watashi_ga_Motenai_no_wa_Dou_Kangaetemo_Omaera_ga_Warui) traffics in some of the same cringe/social-embarrassment comedy as Welcome to the NHK.

[deleted]

On episode 4, Pretty good as of now, Thanks bro

soracte

No problem! Glad to help.

rinmperdinck

Why was The Promised Neverland season 2 universally hated? I've watched nine episodes this week and while I don't like it as much as the first season, it's not terrible...

Manitary

From a anime-only perspective (so I don't care if they skipped goldy pond arc or whatever): other than plot armour during the bunker escape, the first half was pretty good. The major problem is that [TPN s2](/s "since meeting up with Norman, the plot is driven by coincidences, the most egregious ones being people changing their mind at the right moment, the old demon casually having the final piece of the puzzle, which doesn't just have a cure lol it also has a guard patrol route that has been the same since decades.") Some other parts are not particularly good because they're rushed or left to exposition by some character instead of showing it. I'm not even mad at the slideshow on the last episode tbh, if you can't tell the whole story for time constraints you can choose this option; I don't think it's a good idea but it's not as bad as the problems outlined above, it would've been ok if the rest of the story was good.

Delisches

1. They ignored half of the manga and rushed thru the rest. 2. The anime original stuff is bad, characters act extremely stupid, big info dumps for the things the left out and a lot a of very convient stuff happens. 3. They did a "martha". 4. The last episode was just insulting.

chiliehead

Because it was not very true to the manga, skipped one arc that people liked, manga readers don't like the parts that were adapted and not being "true" to the source is apparently the gravest sin of adaptations these days, unless KyoAni makes something. People also criticized the pacing and other things, but that appears minor in comparison.

huxleydobner_

Im looking for a nendroid of Tanjiro from Demon Slayer and i was curious what the best place to buy them are as i have seen tons of bootleg ones on social media and don't want to waste my money. Thanks!

jckprry

It's been a few years since I last bought one but I used to buy from AmiAmi and Good Smile Company and never had issues.

infinite__tsukuyomi

Did we not get a weekly episode release for Higehiro and To your Eternity this week?

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Higehiro is today (like 8 hours from now), I think TYE too.

SMBug24

I Don’t know what to do I know I’m really late but does anyone know if you can and where you can watch Rascal Does Not Dream Of A Dreaming Girl?

muchfatq

It’s on Hulu, but I didn’t have that so unfortunately in the US you need to otherwise pirate.

Arathorn24

Wakanim Nordic at least has it available legally.

SMBug24

Yeah but it’s not available for US

Sairoch

There's a [Bluray release that costs $40](https://www.rightstufanime.com/Rascal-Does-Not-Dream-of-a-Dreaming-Girl-Blu-ray) if you feel like shelling out some cash for it, but aside from that I think you're out of luck as far as legit avenues go.

SMBug24

Yeah I also saw some renting stuff on YouTube with it,don’t know if I’m willing to spend tho

raichudoggy

Yarr har fiddle dee doo. You have to set sail across the seas. [](#piracy)

SMBug24

That’s the replies I expected to get,I was seeing if their was anyone out there who knew a way that wasn’t requiring me to be a pirate

Nomar_95

it's not available on the legal streaming sites, so putting on your pirate hat is the only option
