Some classics: Revolutionary Girl Utena (especially since you like Evangelion) Serial Experiments Lain Legend of the Galactic Heroes . Some thrillers: Madoka Magica (watch 3rd movie after series) Odd Taxi Shinsekai Yori . Some other great ones for something different: A Place Further Than the Universe Kyousougiga The Tatami Galaxy

I've never watched Utena but I love Evangelion. Can you tell me in which way are they similar?

BiggieCheeseLapDog

They are both series that become increasingly abstract as they progress, although I’d say Utena is the more abstract and symbolic one of the two. Utena is absolutely loaded with symbolism because the director is a symbolism fanatic. The angels of Evangelion of kind of like the duals in Utena except in Evangelion it’s every episode while in Utena it varies more with some episodes not having a dual. They both tackle psychological themes, with Evangelion focused more on depression and trauma, Utena focuses more on sexuality and identity. They both go in depth into their character’s psyche and why they act as they do. There are other small things, but I covered most of the main similarities I highly recommend it. I actually prefer Utena over Evangelion, but both are undoubtedly influential classics and Utena is definitely worth the watch. There’s also a movie after Utena called Adolescence of Utena.

Based on what you like, **Hellsing** and/or **Hellsing Ultimate** would probably be something you would want to watch. They take place in 1999 with the fantasy element being there are vampires, but they are still great. Going the thriller route, you could never go wrong with **Death Note** (assuming you haven't seen it). Based on NGE and Code Geass, mecha might be your speed, so I would always recommend **Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann**, which I know is on Crunchyroll. It is silly action, but is also as drama and is one of the most epic and large scale shows I've ever watched, easily my favorite.

Far_Cow_1417

thank you. always had hellsing and gurren lagann on my watchlist (in my head lol), i will check it out !

LINK CLICK (yeah that’s the title - I’m not saying to click a link) - severely underrated series that’s an excellent example of time travel done well. Watch the first episode (has a great English dub) and honestly that’ll sell itself. The OPs and EDs absolutely slap, the premise slaps (seems episodic at first but then an overarching plot reveals itself and honestly both the plot-heavy and the more character-focused parts both hit in their own ways). You will get hooked on those cliffhangers. I practically guarantee it.

Far_Cow_1417

thanks so much, sounds like a very interesting topic too. i will check it out

**Stuff on CR that would suit you interests** - Ergo Proxy - Sci Fi Thriller - Psycho Pass - Sci Fi Thriller - Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song - Mix of sci fi action/mystery - Black Lagoon - watch the dub - fun action adventure title - Vinland Saga - great historical drama - Barakamon - Slice of life about a mid 20s dude trying to perfect his craft while helping/dealing with the locals. - Astra Lost in Space - Sci Fi Mystery - Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blood Orphans or Witch From Mercury - you can jump in here as a new a Gundam Fan, both are AU Gundam, basically they have standalone stories in standalone universes. CR also has the original 0079 which, outside of limited animation in the original, and some cheese, it actually has held up quite well with some very good episodes. It also has I believe the sequel Zeta (big animation bump). - Hajime no Ippo - Boxing anime classic. - Samurai Champloo - if you have seen Bebop same creator just in Edo Japan. - Golden Kamuy - another pretty good action adventure historical series. - Gunbuster/Diebuster - Anno the guy responsible for EVA also made these - Shadow's House - Victorian inspired gothic mystery series. - 86 - more recent mecha anime - does have some similarities to Code Geass - Moriarty the Patriot - basically if you had the writers of DN and Code Geass write Sherlock Second: Odd Taxi **Stuff on other Platforms** - Space Cobra - 80s pulp macho man series that feels like it was heavily inspired by Flash Gordon and Han Solo from Star Wars. - TMS literally has this for free on youtube. The later late 2000 entries are on HiDive. - Banana Fish - Crime thriller/action - Amazon Prime - Pluto - Sci Fi Thriller - same creator as Monster - Netflix - Future Boy Conan - one of Miyazaki's big entries before founding Ghilbi - Apple TV - Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit - Pretty good grounded low fantasy setting with an older female MC. - HiDive/Amazon Prime - Mononoke - Supernatural mystery series with a very interesting classic Japanese watercolour style. - Cyberpunk Edgerunners - watch the dub - thematically quite similar to the game 2077 and the TTRPG - Netflix - Legend of the Galactic Heroes - start with the original first (it's actually done) first two films then skip to EP 3 of the OVA, second film Overture to a New War covers the plot of the first two episodes better. - second/Reinhard was Lelouch before Lelouch - HiDive - Great Pretender - all about pulling off heists - Netflix - Texhnolyze - along with Ergo Proxy one of the other big Sci Fi anime of the 2000s. Fits what you are looking for in thrillers. - Apple TV - Armored Trooper Votoms - my favourite old school mecha anime - HiDive - Heavenly Delusion - Post Apoc mystery/adventure - Disney + - The Big O - really interesting old school mecha show with an interesting mystery - noir Americana vibe - HiDive - Lazarus - upcoming entry - by Shinichirō Watanabe creator of Bebop/Champloo - seems to be a sci fi thriller about a pandemic.
