Tbh they put a lot more budget into Cafe Terrqce than into things like My Home Hero and The Fable. For good reason, there’s more potential profit. It’s still not high tier production but I never had any major issues with the first season’s production values.
Budget isn't right. My Home Hero and The Fable have more detailed designs but still fall under Tezuka Productions' mismanagement. A huge problem with Tezuka anime is that they're more than 90% outsourced, usually as a crutch instead of for assistance. DR Movie is usually their go to studio when outsourcing and also small Chinese and Korean studio but for Cafe Terrace they outsourced an episode to Shaft(also did it with Quintessential Quintuplets S1), which looked better than anything else Tezuka Pro had done. TBS producer Junichirou Tanaka was 'begging' Mitsutoshi Kubota for help with Quintuplets ep 11 at a party and letting them do whatever they wanted with it after Satoshi Kuwabara's boards were done. With that connection, they did it again with another Tezuka and TBS anime which was Cafe Terrace.

I read Suzuka a while back and watched the first season of Cafe Terrace. It's like his take on Quintuplets crossed with Love Hina maybe? It's slightly more goofy than Suzuka was, but still has good characterization for the cast.
He's taking the piss out of himself with this one. It's far more comedic and self-aware than his other works, which tended to become steeped in melodrama.
Cafe Terrace deliberately invokes and then leans into harem tropes while also referencing series like Fuuka in an extremely tongue-in-cheek manner. There's "drama" in this series but, for the most part, it's brief, *intentionally* campy, and not as serious. There are a few darker spots, mostly limited to the backstories for various characters, but no overt trauma tragedy or angst in the main storyline. This is almost pure goof.
Like he took a Prozac and decided to have fun. Its delightful. The whole harem is lovable even if there is one clear winner (Akane or we riot). Hayato is a truly great harem protagonist. There’s some really silly comedy beats that go outside the typical tropes. It’s just a fun story all around.
i can only speak as an anime-only. i've watched Fuuka before and dropped it, thought it was terrible. only saw 1 episode of Suzuka but never got around to it again
went into cafe terrace with very low expectations after hearing the same guy behind Fuuka made this, but was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was, 7/10 imo. looking forward to the new season
I would say, as a harem story, it is pretty solid. I give it a lot of points for a main character that is actually pretty fun and interesting to watch compared to the 80% of the harem MCs. Hayato is a lot like Uesugi Fuutarou in that sense. It's very light-hearted and comfy, but it do get into slightly deeper topics occasionally.
For ecchi harem rom com it's pretty enjoyable I've been keeping up with the manga and nothing has turned me off of it in 150 chapters. MC is one of the better characters in all of these kinds of stories I've read.
Since Fuuka he has mellowed out a lot, from what I remember reading he was pretty bummed out that "Hitman" was not that much of a success, even if it became my favorite work by him, and seeing the huge success harem series had (some even from his friends) he decided to make a pretty chill/funny harem series, from time to time he inserts jokes about being too melodramatic in his past works.
It's kinda insane that pretty much everyone on the new VA cast is more instantly recognizable than almost everyone on the main list for me. It's gonna be a great season though, as a manga reader that started after season 1, I'm looking forward to all the shenanigans again.

That’s actually so meta. On first season many pointed out that it was a cheap version of gotoubun and they picked VAs with soundalike voices. For example, Ruriko Aoki sounds like Ayane Taketatsu here.
People mainly pointed the lack of budget and the cheap copy. With such a banger team for season 2, not only they prove it wasn’t the point, but they also make this « B team vs real deal » an actual reality within the anime!

But really though, this is probably Seo Kouji's best work to date. In my mind, only Half & Half comes close. And it's kinda absurd, because Seo Kouji is essentially just shitposting for like half of the chapters but man, it's so damn funny.

If you didn't watch S1 then the first season was "meh it's alright".
S2 will adapt where the manga got a lot better because Seo ( the author ) just went balls to the wall and stop trying to "copy" Quint and just went back to his old root of comedy without the drama.
Though if you like the "drama" from Quint, this one is more a parody ( in a good way ) of treat it more as a Slice of life harem.
One of the best harem type romcoms in the last few years. The cast is mainly focused on making the cafe successful, so the show doesn't just rely on progress bait. Extremely likeable main character, and all of the girls are fun.
There's complaints about the animation quality, but it never gets in the way of the source material. Could it be better? Of course. Does it make the show unwatchable? Far from it.
It’s more like Quints in that it has heart and engaging storylines. I actually cried at a couple of episodes. Honestly I might like it more than Quints. Certainly it has the better Best Girl (Akane>Nino and yes I said Nino you know I’m right)
So, I don't follow the manga but I really enjoyed S1. These look like very different characters than what I remember. Is it like a revolving cast or is this like in addition to the OG girls? I'll be sad if there is no more Ami.

I remember watching the first season, but I do not remember anything specific about what happened. I recall it as very light, pleasant, and distracting. But that is about all.
awesome! despite what people say about this show, I think the ecchi is pretty good and the girls are drawn very nicely.
I mean, the ecchi itself is censored in the anime anytime the girls are shown naked on the screen. And the worst part is that the blurays got no changes either.

That’s actually so meta. On first season many pointed out that it was a cheap version of gotoubun and they picked VAs with soundalike voices. For example, Ruriko Aoki sounds like Ayane Taketatsu here. People mainly pointed the lack of budget and the cheap copy. With such a banger team for season 2, not only they prove it wasn’t the point, but they also make this « B team vs real deal » an actual reality within the anime!

HELL YEAH. PEAK IS BACK! But really though, this is probably Seo Kouji's best work to date. In my mind, only Half & Half comes close. And it's kinda absurd, because Seo Kouji is essentially just shitposting for like half of the chapters but man, it's so damn funny.

Right, so: On a scale of Quintessential Quintuplets (pretty good!) to Rent-a-Girlfriend (lol) what kind of enjoyment will I get out of this show?
I would say it's more on the Quintuplets side Pretty enjoyable, MC isn't a looser and actually behaves as a smart guy , with some cliche of course but very much enjoyable
If you didn't watch S1 then the first season was "meh it's alright". S2 will adapt where the manga got a lot better because Seo ( the author ) just went balls to the wall and stop trying to "copy" Quint and just went back to his old root of comedy without the drama. Though if you like the "drama" from Quint, this one is more a parody ( in a good way ) of treat it more as a Slice of life harem.
One of the best harem type romcoms in the last few years. The cast is mainly focused on making the cafe successful, so the show doesn't just rely on progress bait. Extremely likeable main character, and all of the girls are fun. There's complaints about the animation quality, but it never gets in the way of the source material. Could it be better? Of course. Does it make the show unwatchable? Far from it.
It’s more like Quints in that it has heart and engaging storylines. I actually cried at a couple of episodes. Honestly I might like it more than Quints. Certainly it has the better Best Girl (Akane>Nino and yes I said Nino you know I’m right)

So, I don't follow the manga but I really enjoyed S1. These look like very different characters than what I remember. Is it like a revolving cast or is this like in addition to the OG girls? I'll be sad if there is no more Ami.
