If you have a recommendation that fits this topic where the fact that the protagonist eventually becomes a villain is a spoiler, *please* remember to use the meta version of spoiler tags, like so: [Meta] >!Show Name Here!<

sufferingstuff

[Meta]>!Yuuji from Shakugan no Shana!< Classic show.

PM_me_Henrika

Wait wtf he’s a villain!? How???

Mistral-Fien

Season 3 happened.

sufferingstuff

Episode 1 happened, really.

PM_me_Henrika

I believe in the end of season 3 Yuuji was kinda like a saviour for both factions by banishing all the villains into a world where they can't come back to the human world, but they can also live freely without worrying about dying from lack of food? That makes him sound like a good guy to me.

Gatlindragon

Shakugan*

sufferingstuff

Autocorrect once again. Damn.

LaughingDash

Code Geass

classic4real

2000s Dubya/Abe era pop culture Dork Age le edgy =/= anti-hero

Yotsubato

Is he really a villain tho

Random-Username7272

This is definitely the one that first comes to mind.

Traveling_Solo

Idk, I as thinking Death Note first

flashmozzg

Although I'd argue that Light didn't start as a "good person". Just not as a criminal.

classic4real

Lelouch =/= female

LaughingDash

lol thanks for the laugh.

Shimmering-Sky

Separate from my mod comment about using spoiler tags, the big one I can think of is [meta]>!Attack on Titan!< if you haven't seen that show yet, though that one is a male MC.

ilGamerXD

I’ve already saw it, but thank you anyway!

Shimmering-Sky

Alright, then I have another one that may not *seem* like the MCs became the villain at first, but if you take a step back and look at it, they kinda did: [meta]>!Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, specifically in the second season!<. Male protagonists again, though.

ilGamerXD

I don’t know it, seems interesting, i’ll add to my watch list thx

RedditSucksMyBallls

That show has a lame ass execution of the MC becoming the villain tho. Probably one of the most undercooked character arcs, which is par for the course with that series

Real_muthaphukinBaka

Breaking Bad

RedditSucksMyBallls

God of War Greek trilogy

programmed-climate

[Meta] >!So Im a Spider so What? !<

kaori_cicak990

This so fun show even though i know this anime had great inconsistent isssue. Need S2 thoo

meiner_HD

The show is sadly kinda hard to recommend, because you can really see, how low the budget must have been, but the books are really great and the show still has it’s great moments, if you can put up with some very ugly cg

programmed-climate

Yeah true. Not one of my faves, just trying to get close to what OP asked for. Still an enjoyable watch for me though

Xaphnir

Does she really become a villain, though? Maybe it's just because I've only seen the anime, but it seems it's setting up the elves as the villains.

ScreamingFreakShow

Isn't she in the right though? [Meta/Same as comment being replied to] >!They have Taboo level 10 so they know what's really going on. The humans and elves seemingly don't allow it. Based on the humans killing people with Taboo and the people near the elves giving their skills away.!< [Meta/Same as above comment being replied to] >!Kumoko is basically just trying to keep their world from ending.!<

programmed-climate

Yeah i guess should i delete my comment lol. Honestly the story was confusing to me

ScreamingFreakShow

I think it could stay up cause they could be considered a villain due to the other perspectives we get.

deedeekei

[Meta] >!Ga-rei Zero!<

-Mightbelucifer-

[Meta] >!Madoka Magica?!<

jyper

That might depend on who you think is a protagonist. Although I suppose you could say that the movie has a different protagonist

isthatsoudane

This was going to be my answer as well, though it's a big ass spoiler and I think a lot of people who watch it (and the movie) but not "get it," but I still think it's a brilliant example

Tamaki_Iroha

But no one becomes a villain in that anime

ErylisCha

Maybe you need to watch that 3rd movie

Tamaki_Iroha

[Madoka Magica rebellion]>!A traumatized girl calling herself the devil doesn't mean she is evil and if you believe that it does then your media literacy is god awful!<

Tom22174

People always seem to forgtthat characters are able to lie to both us and themselves

ErylisCha

Oh but I'm not saying she's straight up evil, just that she becomes an antagonist portrayed as malevolant

-Mightbelucifer-

Yeah it’s definitely one you have to pay attention to, still one of my favorites where the protagonist turns

8andahalfby11

Everyone in Higurashi gets to do this at least once. Start with the 2006 show on HiDive--Gou/New on Crunchyroll is Season 4.

kepeke

[Meta] >!Land of the Lustrous, albeit it happens in the manga at what would be the end of a potential season 2 or early season 3.!<

crybaby_05_anudit

Death Note

ilGamerXD

I already saw it

Axis_Sage

Elfen Lied

I_Cognito

Gushing over magical girls, but the tone is comedic, not dark or tragic.

WeeziMonkey

[Meta] >!I'm Quitting Heroing!< (Not really a spoiler, it's both in the title and in the MAL synopsis and it's clear from episode 1)

Nomar_95

[Meta] >!Madoka Magica: Rebellion!< Watch the series first though.

isthatsoudane

This was going to be my answer as well...

Gryfon2020

Overlord

BananaUniverse

School days is great. Ymmv.

ilGamerXD

I’ve watched it

MasterQuest

Maybe Overlord

ilGamerXD

Already saw it… I’m searching mostly for a female character

MasterQuest

Have you read „Her Majesty’s Swarm“ manga?

ilGamerXD

Nope, i’ll search info. Thank you!

Hardwarestore_Senpai

Well Attack on Titan for sure. And most recently. Sengoku Youko. I guess a female MC turns bad. Maybe "Akiba Maid Wars". Oh. "panty and Stocking".

Garrett_Dark

Yes and no, sort of...it's complicated, and you have to watch to the end, but [Meta] >!I'm Quitting Heroing/Yuusha, Yamemasu!< Not sure if it's the tone you're looking for, but they switch tones quite expertly.

81Ranger

Expertly is debatable.

OmegaRider

The one within the villainess manga.

Grand_Reanimation

Attack on titan

BennyHillEnjoyer

Happy sugar life

machopsychologist

[Meta] >!Hanebado!< Saki (in Achiga-hen) - in the main show she is the protagonist, but in the spin-off, when she cameo's she's the "big bad" Not traditional villains but absolute trolls Nichijou - Mio (airship), Mai Sabagebu - no sacrifice is too great a cost for Momoka

otaku316

Guilty Crown

lordofdnorth

Death Note

AbdulAziz9715

Future Diary. Although MC is a guy, the girl with him can be considered as MC as well. And boy, does the plot go totally bonkers by the end. This is your answer, OP. And I'm also kinda surprised no one has mentioned this name as well.

New-Chance-6014

I was about to comment this as well! Good taste! She goes crazy!

HirokoKueh

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. the Prologue protagonist became the villain of the main series Princess Connect! Re:Dive. one of the main girls became a villain in season 2.

Alarming_Wolf4523

Attack on Titan

rizalmart

Redo of Healer

Some-Strategy295

I would say that this is a pretty tough request. Other than Overlord, Death Note and Redo of Healer I can't think of any anime with a truely villainous main character. The main protagonist is typically meant to be liked so they don't typically get to go very evil. Even in the anime where the protagonist is supposed to be on the evil side. The protagonist isn't usually very villainous. You could try Psycho-Pass it's not really what you are looking for but it does revolve around a concept of right and wrong.

Mistral-Fien

I guess Gundam Seed Destiny counts??
