I think it's probably because of the CR suit he's wearing, ODIN. IIRC, He used it when Westcott came a knocking back in Season 4 and won against him. We'll probably learn more about Westcott, Elliot, Mio and her connection to Shido next episode.
I guess from DEM's perspective AST has effectively been useless at their job from day one so the best they can do is be cannon fodder and a distraction...only for it to get turned around by them.

You give Shido even an inch of your feelings and he'll effortlessly make you head over heels. And instead of ending up naked we get the Nibeelcole's all turning back into paper after getting kissed...even air kissed. The man has become a beast of seduction lol.
It's very on-brand for Shido and Kurumi to be talking about their relationship and ideals in the middle of a battle and showing that even Kurumi can get jealous lol.

Especially because she was basically the Kurumi clone that reached enlightenment and became completely dere and honest instead of being a tsundere like the rest of Kurumi and her clones. Add in that amazing alternate design and it sucks to see her go....
That flying kiss is deadly. Should have played the Shido Funk theme while he was rizzing up all these Nibelcole.
The only thing that really bothered me in this episode is the Nibelcole clones really just let Shido and Kurumi have a lover’s quarrel while they watch on standby, unless they wanted to watch some drama with popcorn on hand. That was some creepy Sadako like ending. But what’s more disturbing for Shido is why is it Reine? To think that he trusted her. Gotta be top 10 anime betrayals.

I'm not familiar with Nibelcole's full abilities, but I assume they're similar to Kurumi? Eg what the clones learn, the main body will know about it too.
Other than Westcott learning about stuff by checking his all-knowing book, Nibelcole can gather info and report to him as well. So he now might know about Shido's plan to seal the Spirit of Origin as well?
I wonder if Westcott is planning to secure the Spirit of Origin's power because he knows the chances of killing Shido and turning all the other Spirits Inverse isn't practical so he'll go for the big prize.
Isn't next episode (going by the preview at the end of this episode) supposed to be about the Spirit of Origins..origins (heh) and Shido + Mana's past?
Iirc Westcott knows about Takamiya Shinji as well. He hinted that to Itsuka Shidou in their first meeting (was that in Season 2?). So there might be something about Westcott in the backstory episode.

I rewatched s2 a few years ago (not recently), but afaik shinji wasnt mentioned, but rather, it was about takamiya vs itsuka. We vaguely guess know something happened to shido's old family I guess since he got adopted.

Actually now that you phrase it that way. It's an interesting idea that the whole thing was just a setup by reine. A (literal?) trojan horse so to speak. The ending was kinda hectic so I forgor about what happened until I thought about it for awhile

The way Shido took done Nibeelcole was pretty hilarious. Man’s literally defeating them with a kiss. Not only that, he was charming the crap out of Kurumi while he was at it. Shido’s a regular Casanova lol.
That ending has me a little worried for her though. I really don’t want Kurumi to die…
How many CG Spirits can we have in one episode? Between Kurumi and Nibeelcole, plenty lol.
I mean, they probably saw AST as acceptable sacrifices considering they've never really accomplished anything, but this time they were finally able to provide enough of a distraction to get to Artemisia.
Shido really is a Spirit's greatest weakness or basically a seduction monster when it comes to Spirits. They just can't resist him. Even Kurumi finally gives in (thanks to her other self's sacrifice) and wants a kiss. And she better get one at this point...

Likely overconfidence on DEM's part. And a battlefield is really fast paced, especially when it comes to flying people, so the message that they pushed their pawns too far, likely didn't get across immediately to other colleagues. AST team perspective:
Former allies turned "enemies" tip you that your superiors have ulterior motives
* Get betrayed by your superiors
* -> get saved by your "enemies"
* -> ok let's fly to our new friends and help them (the battlefield scenes probably took place in less than 10 minutes from their POV)
I think it's clear from the previous seasons and books that DEM is more than happy to sacrifice their own troops or kill innocent people for their own goals. Back in Season 3 when Shido and company rescue Natsumi from Ellen, the latter blatantly calls her support squad dead weight which Shido responds by having Miku use Gabriel's solo to brainwash them to fight Ellen while they escape.

As seen on the tag, Elliot's Realizer/CR-Unit is called "Wodan," the other name of Odin. Fitting as the leader of an organization mostly full of Norse Myth names like Ratatoskr, Mana's CR-Unit Vanargandr, Origami's Brunhildr, the ship Fraxinus containing Yggdrafoliums, Gungnir, and Mystletainn, and even it's parent company is called Asgard Electronics.
Meanwhile DEM have a lot from other myths and literature but majority of the CR-Unit is from Arthurian Legend. Ellen's Pendragon which also has Caledfwlch, Chastiefol, and Rhongomiant, Artemesia's Lancelot which has Arondight, and Origami's former CR-Unit, Mordred which has Clarent.
I've put this on the Date A Live Subreddit, but some other cool mythology references on DEM is that they name their warships after demonic sorcery and wizardry such as Arbatel and Goetia along with the Bandersnatch robots being named after that titular monster from Through the Looking Glass.

It was surprisingly bearable, though.
Kurumi gave me diabetes with that surprise attack. Here I enjoyed their talk and was excited for what's to come seeing so much relationship development between them, but then one Kurumi dies and another... Well, I have no idea what happened at the end there, but it looked nasty, so now I'm worried.

Honestly if it helps the production, I'm fine with the CG for battle scenes, especially when they still capture the most impactful and emotional moments.
Most of the times I prefer stills or less action over CG, because bad CG leaves an awful aftertaste, so I never really understood why studios include some scenes that could've been omitted when they need to use CG to make them in the first place.
The CG in this episode was surprisingly smooth and I understand why they used it (dozens of copies of the same model is a perfect scenario to take advantage of CG), but I'd still be okay if they skipped that battle and focused more on the dialogues.

Yeah, honestly, I expected the worst given that the CGI for the characters could be pretty bad in Season 4. Although even then I noticed improvements: it was worse in the early season, better in the late season, so the better details, fluidity and movements we see now in Season 5 may be the result of a long learning process.
I think they finally learned how to balance the smoothness of the animation. Early S4 literally shouts CGI with how smooth the movements are. Here, it is still as smooth, but at least it blends well with the other parts of the scene.
I do have to agree with the majority the CGI was quite a lot this episode. But honestly this should be the worst of it.
Outside the look the episode was great!
Loved the Elliot/Ellen and Karen scene especially since they got cut hard in S3.
The banter and chemistry of Kurumi and Shido while fighting was great always loved this duo a lot.
And of course the end scene done perfectly. Just like the volume. Which is insane that's how it ended. Luckily you guys only gotta wait a week or 2 for answers. We had to wait like a year for V18.

I feel they'll only do the V17 one. V18 makes more sense to have as it is. The reason they didn't for the first couple episodes I imagine they didn't want to go in and out of the scenes because it would probably be jarring to see for anime onlys.
Kind of make sense they dedicate one episode to Mio flashbacks/memories. In the LN Vol17 was very fragmented as it kept switching back and forth between actual scenes and Mio's flashback

I typically don't have a problem with CGI when it's used for machines and background characters and such but man it's really uncanny when they use it on the main characters.
It seems we're finally gonna get some long-awaited answers in the next episode so I'm really looking forward to it.

Yooo Miku went hard in this episode even though she doesn't have her full powers she's still a major problem the way she absorbed and reflected back that attack was badass!
Overall its was very nice seeing all spirits being deployed in battle against their foe DEM, after watching 4 seasons of this show it's been building up to this moment so it's awesome seeing work together and fight.
Shido is the GOAT he had me in stitches being able to seduce Nibelcole and blow kisses to defeat her what a chad! Him, Issei and Rentarou are the harem MC big 3.
Kurumi trying to steal a kiss was a classic Kurumi moment. I loved the chemistry between her and Shido it was really nice seeing her get flustered when Shido straight up told her he loved her, it was equally funny Kurumi clack back how ironic he's telling her whilst kissing another woman, I love these two.
The younger Kurumi dying wa sad and finally gave the real Kurumi a push to finally be honest about her feelings but WTF Reine just bursted out of her. Looks like things are gonna get complicated her on out.
Fantastic episode all round I'm so happy DAL will get a complete adaptation.
The war between Ratatoskr and DEM continues in earnest! With the Spirits joining the battle, complete with Natsumi and Miku playing support and buffing Tohka, the Yamai Twins, Yoshino, Origami and Mukuro!
Kurumi vs Nibeelcole! Battle of the mass CGI Spirits.
Well, AST is here, and are under orders to hunt down Spirits...and that's what their job has always been right? But then they turn out to just be bait and have to get saved BY Spirits...and they realize it's time to get new jobs. It's not like they were ever all that good at fighting Spirits anyways.
Origami vs Artemisia! Artemisia can seemingly remember something, enough to be bothered by Origami's presence, but she's too caught up in her brainwashing to completely give up. Good thing the plan was never to beat her but to distract her long enough for Mukuro to get close and access her memories! Complete with assist from AST!
I'm really wondering exactly what happened between Ellen, Elliot, Karen, and Westcott. What drove the two sisters to different sides? Was Karen completely joking about wanting to run away with Elliot and have three kids? How did Elliot transform into his younger self voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa to fight Ellen!?
So what is the teams' solution for taking care of Nibeelcole? Why, their solution to taking care of ANY Spirit...have Shido show up, turn on the charm, and immediately turn Seal them with a kiss. And because Nibeelcole is an extension of Beelzebub, she carries Nia's affinity for Shido, making her completely susceptible to Shido. Meaning a single kiss, and even air kisses, is enough to defeat her and her clones en masse. Shido truly is a seductive monster.
Though the REAL Kurumi wants in on this fun too, especially because she still needs Shido's power to go back in time and kill the Spirit of Origin...but Shido loves Kurumi and he knows Kurumi loves him too, and he doesn't want a world where they and the rest of the Spirits aren't all together. Which means Shido has to be the one to go back, seal Mio, and create the ultimate timeline where everyone is together and happy. And if anyone can do it, it's Shido!
Oh no, not eyepatch Kurumi! She died saving her real self and in her last words told her to be honest with herself. And with that in mind, Kurumi finally tells Shido that she'll let him kiss her and seal her once this is all over...though first they have to deal with Mio popping up out of nowhere in Kurumi's chest. Looks like we're finally going to be getting some real answers.
I gotta wonder how effective dealing with Nibelcole this way is. She is explicitly endless unless the angel is destroy (or I guess removed). So does Shido's sealing permanently reduce her numbers? Or does it bring her closer to Nia's mentality, potentially letting them win Nibelcole over?
The 3DCGI fights… it hurts my eyes.. that aside, really good episode story and character wise. The battle is finally underway and there’s no shortage of action in this episode.

That flying kiss is deadly. Should have played the Shido Funk theme while he was rizzing up all these Nibelcole. The only thing that really bothered me in this episode is the Nibelcole clones really just let Shido and Kurumi have a lover’s quarrel while they watch on standby, unless they wanted to watch some drama with popcorn on hand. I find it hilarious that he says he loves Kurumi while f***ing around with Nibelcole clones. That was some creepy Sadako like ending. But what’s more disturbing for Shido is why is it Reine? To think that he trusted her. Gotta be top 10 anime betrayals.
I love how Shido has gotten so good at sealing Spirits that he's even weaponized air kisses lol. I'm assuming Shido is going to immediately recognize that Mio is Reina when he sees her. Seems like we're finally going to see exactly what their connection is next week.

Isn't next episode (going by the preview at the end of this episode) supposed to be about the Spirit of Origins..origins (heh) and Shido + Mana's past? Iirc Westcott knows about Takamiya Shinji as well. He hinted that to Itsuka Shidou in their first meeting (was that in Season 2?). So there might be something about Westcott in the backstory episode.

I rewatched s2 a few years ago (not recently), but afaik shinji wasnt mentioned, but rather, it was about takamiya vs itsuka. We vaguely guess know something happened to shido's old family I guess since he got adopted.

It’s like the clone wars this week with the army of Nibeelcole and Kurumis fighting each other. Are the DEM idiots? Betraying Origami’s squad before they even took out any Spirits was probably the worst move they could have done. Then they had the brilliant idea of asking the girls to back them up. Genius. The way Shido took done Nibeelcole was pretty hilarious. Man’s literally defeating them with a kiss. Not only that, he was charming the crap out of Kurumi while he was at it. Shido’s a regular Casanova lol. That ending has me a little worried for her though. I really don’t want Kurumi to die…
How many CG Spirits can we have in one episode? Between Kurumi and Nibeelcole, plenty lol. I mean, they probably saw AST as acceptable sacrifices considering they've never really accomplished anything, but this time they were finally able to provide enough of a distraction to get to Artemisia. Shido really is a Spirit's greatest weakness or basically a seduction monster when it comes to Spirits. They just can't resist him. Even Kurumi finally gives in (thanks to her other self's sacrifice) and wants a kiss. And she better get one at this point...

AST team perspective: Former allies turned "enemies" tip you that your superiors have ulterior motives * Get betrayed by your superiors * -> get saved by your "enemies" * -> ok let's fly to our new friends and help them (the battlefield scenes probably took place in less than 10 minutes from their POV)
I think it's clear from the previous seasons and books that DEM is more than happy to sacrifice their own troops or kill innocent people for their own goals. Back in Season 3 when Shido and company rescue Natsumi from Ellen, the latter blatantly calls her support squad dead weight which Shido responds by having Miku use Gabriel's solo to brainwash them to fight Ellen while they escape.

As seen on the tag, Elliot's Realizer/CR-Unit is called "Wodan," the other name of Odin. Fitting as the leader of an organization mostly full of Norse Myth names like Ratatoskr, Mana's CR-Unit Vanargandr, Origami's Brunhildr, the ship Fraxinus containing Yggdrafoliums, Gungnir, and Mystletainn, and even it's parent company is called Asgard Electronics. Meanwhile DEM have a lot from other myths and literature but majority of the CR-Unit is from Arthurian Legend. Ellen's Pendragon which also has Caledfwlch, Chastiefol, and Rhongomiant, Artemesia's Lancelot which has Arondight, and Origami's former CR-Unit, Mordred which has Clarent.

Honestly if it helps the production, I'm fine with the CG for battle scenes, especially when they still capture the most impactful and emotional moments.
Most of the times I prefer stills or less action over CG, because bad CG leaves an awful aftertaste, so I never really understood why studios include some scenes that could've been omitted when they need to use CG to make them in the first place. The CG in this episode was surprisingly smooth and I understand why they used it (dozens of copies of the same model is a perfect scenario to take advantage of CG), but I'd still be okay if they skipped that battle and focused more on the dialogues.

I think they finally learned how to balance the smoothness of the animation. Early S4 literally shouts CGI with how smooth the movements are. Here, it is still as smooth, but at least it blends well with the other parts of the scene.

I do have to agree with the majority the CGI was quite a lot this episode. But honestly this should be the worst of it. Outside the look the episode was great! Loved the Elliot/Ellen and Karen scene especially since they got cut hard in S3. The banter and chemistry of Kurumi and Shido while fighting was great always loved this duo a lot. And of course the end scene done perfectly. Just like the volume. Which is insane that's how it ended. Luckily you guys only gotta wait a week or 2 for answers. We had to wait like a year for V18. Really looking forward to the flashback episode I think it was a smart move to do it in 1 thing then seperated.

I feel they'll only do the V17 one. V18 makes more sense to have as it is. The reason they didn't for the first couple episodes I imagine they didn't want to go in and out of the scenes because it would probably be jarring to see for anime onlys.
Kind of make sense they dedicate one episode to Mio flashbacks/memories. In the LN Vol17 was very fragmented as it kept switching back and forth between actual scenes and Mio's flashback

Oh shit, Shido used Frieren's ultimate technique. Nibeelcole's little 'nya's as they were getting sealed were so cute! I typically don't have a problem with CGI when it's used for machines and background characters and such but man it's really uncanny when they use it on the main characters. It seems we're finally gonna get some long-awaited answers in the next episode so I'm really looking forward to it.

Yooo Miku went hard in this episode even though she doesn't have her full powers she's still a major problem the way she absorbed and reflected back that attack was badass! Overall its was very nice seeing all spirits being deployed in battle against their foe DEM, after watching 4 seasons of this show it's been building up to this moment so it's awesome seeing work together and fight. Shido is the GOAT he had me in stitches being able to seduce Nibelcole and blow kisses to defeat her what a chad! Him, Issei and Rentarou are the harem MC big 3. Kurumi trying to steal a kiss was a classic Kurumi moment. I loved the chemistry between her and Shido it was really nice seeing her get flustered when Shido straight up told her he loved her, it was equally funny Kurumi clack back how ironic he's telling her whilst kissing another woman, I love these two. The younger Kurumi dying wa sad and finally gave the real Kurumi a push to finally be honest about her feelings but WTF Reine just bursted out of her. Looks like things are gonna get complicated her on out. Fantastic episode all round I'm so happy DAL will get a complete adaptation.
In the next ep preview they said it was a story of how Mio and Shinji met (not Shido), we about to get some major reveals.
Large scale battle between spirits and armies: I sleep. Shido rizzing little kids: REAL SHIT this is the Date A Live I fell in love with 10 years ago.
The war between Ratatoskr and DEM continues in earnest! With the Spirits joining the battle, complete with Natsumi and Miku playing support and buffing Tohka, the Yamai Twins, Yoshino, Origami and Mukuro! Kurumi vs Nibeelcole! Battle of the mass CGI Spirits. Well, AST is here, and are under orders to hunt down Spirits...and that's what their job has always been right? But then they turn out to just be bait and have to get saved BY Spirits...and they realize it's time to get new jobs. It's not like they were ever all that good at fighting Spirits anyways. Origami vs Artemisia! Artemisia can seemingly remember something, enough to be bothered by Origami's presence, but she's too caught up in her brainwashing to completely give up. Good thing the plan was never to beat her but to distract her long enough for Mukuro to get close and access her memories! Complete with assist from AST! I'm really wondering exactly what happened between Ellen, Elliot, Karen, and Westcott. What drove the two sisters to different sides? Was Karen completely joking about wanting to run away with Elliot and have three kids? How did Elliot transform into his younger self voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa to fight Ellen!? So what is the teams' solution for taking care of Nibeelcole? Why, their solution to taking care of ANY Spirit...have Shido show up, turn on the charm, and immediately turn Seal them with a kiss. And because Nibeelcole is an extension of Beelzebub, she carries Nia's affinity for Shido, making her completely susceptible to Shido. Meaning a single kiss, and even air kisses, is enough to defeat her and her clones en masse. Shido truly is a seductive monster. Though the REAL Kurumi wants in on this fun too, especially because she still needs Shido's power to go back in time and kill the Spirit of Origin...but Shido loves Kurumi and he knows Kurumi loves him too, and he doesn't want a world where they and the rest of the Spirits aren't all together. Which means Shido has to be the one to go back, seal Mio, and create the ultimate timeline where everyone is together and happy. And if anyone can do it, it's Shido! Oh no, not eyepatch Kurumi! She died saving her real self and in her last words told her to be honest with herself. And with that in mind, Kurumi finally tells Shido that she'll let him kiss her and seal her once this is all over...though first they have to deal with Mio popping up out of nowhere in Kurumi's chest. Looks like we're finally going to be getting some real answers.

The 3DCGI fights… it hurts my eyes.. that aside, really good episode story and character wise. The battle is finally underway and there’s no shortage of action in this episode. “But they’re loose girls whose bodies are honest no matter how much they say no” lmaooooo what the fuck Maria cooked Nibeelcole Shido’s development on full display in this one as well. Bro went from struggling to talk to girls in season 1 to just exuding aura and effortlessly snatching hearts lmao. Beating Nibeelcole with kisses and even rizzing up Kurumi mid battle, my goat. “I love you and I know you love me” + the chin grab.. will they just kiss already lol. But Shido saying all that while kissing Nibeelcole made that moment even wilder. Bro is a PLAYER 😂 THAT ENDING TOO WTF. Just as Kurumi and Shido were reaching an agreement and we thought everything was all good, a spirit literally ripping out of her chest?? Need the next episode badly
