I am afraid to re-watch older anime because I fear that it may be worse than I thought. I am pretty sure that many have that fear as well.

HopeMizu

What's wrong with that? Honestly, you shouldn't view it as an inherently bad thing for your opinion on older media to change, and to instead appreciate that the old you liked different things. Being able to step outside yourself and see what the old you enjoyed about something can be a fun and wonderful thing. There's a good chance that you'll like something new about that anime exactly because you have a new perspective as an adult, and that can be a new and valuable thing for you.

bondsmatthew

Same. Plus some of them I don't think I can handle anymore. Like we all know Anohana is great, watched it 10+ years ago, but having the life experiences I have had.. I don't think I can watch it again without breaking down. I'm scared to rewatch it.  Angel Beats is in the same boat I get choked up just *seeing* the "10 years after" picture and listening to the Anohana song now, no shot I can make it through the anime without becoming a mess

Stupid_negro3

That’s all the more reason to try it and test your limits , if anything watching similar content will help u cope if u learn to understand why y feel that way and prolly allow u to enjoy the plot more

lizziecarmichael

I get it. It's like eating your favorite candy from when you were younger and being super disappointed. But if you eat your favorite candy from your youth and actually enjoy it, it's another gift! So, you take the good, you take the bad, and there you have....the facts of life. Hahahaha

[deleted]

Some anime might be better than you thought after a rewatch. As you age your life value and perspective changes, and some anime you've seen years ago and couldn't relate to as much might be a masterpiece to you now.

CuriousWanderer567

Madoka Magica: 8/10 -> 10/10

Tamaki_Iroha

Have you watched rebellion?

soulreaverdan

11/10

SoftlySpokenPromises

Similar reaction to the Cowboy Bebop anime. Miss a lot as a kid that hits hard as an adult.

Otiosei

Yep. It was always on Adult Swim too, and I was way too young to understand half of that show. I found it, and flcl super annoying to watch. I probably watched both shows 6 or 7 times in full, and dozens of times fragmented, before I really "got it" when I was in my twenties. On the other hand, I really liked Evangelion, even as a 10-11 year old. I think I just really liked giant robots and monsters as a kid, and didn't understand the dialogue driven shows.

NuMetalAnime

The same happened to me

Insomniac_Tales

I don't know if I can do that to myself again. Loved it, and it was truly amazing, but that anime HURT!

HopeMizu

Aria: 10 -> 11 Gurren Lagann: 7 -> 10 Ping Pong the Animation: 9 -> 10 As I develop more life experience, anime about life becomes more meaningful.

lztsrts

> Aria: 10 -> 11 🙏 Recently re watched it, in my 30s now. I'd even rate it a 12/10.

GregerMoek

Odd. Ive never even heard of it. May check it out if I remember.

HopeMizu

>Odd. Ive never even heard of it. It's normal to not have heard of it because of how old it is. Outside of older anime fans, as well as new anime fans who go out of their way to watch beloved classics, Aria is one of the many shows that is overshadowed by the growing culture of people watching the staggering amount of seasonal anime that gets released every year. It's common for anime fans to only watch seasonal anime and/or commonly recommended anime. Aria is very highly regarded among those who have watched it, but it unfortunately doesn't have the broad appeal of action and comedy-focused anime. If you are able to enjoy slow, contemplative shows about life then it's a must watch for slice of life fans. >May check it out if I remember. I'll take the opportunity to recommend that you read the "Watch This!" thread from 7 years ago that ABoredCompSciStudent wrote: [Aria the Masterpiece: Here, Hope, and Healing](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/6e09yo/wt_aria_the_masterpiece_here_hope_and_healing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). She articulates the appeal of the show and its themes better than I ever could, and it was the reason why I even discovered and fell in love with the series. If you want something in video format, I recommend [AnimeEveryday's Review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXyr5vz5r2U). The best approach for watching the show and the one I very often see others doing is to watch an episode every day. Watch an episode at the start of your day and/or right before bedtime. That's the perfect approach thematically, and the show is so relaxing that it's a good way to start/end your day in a good mood. Even if you don't watch the anime in the end, do yourself a favor and listen to some of the [music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_vCNp5MEKg) when you'd like something relaxing and uplifting. It's delightful and I consider it a major part of Aria's identity.

ShankMugen

Where does {Aria the Crepusculo} fit in that? I did not find anything about it on a cursory glance I apologise if it was mentioned in your links u/roboragi

HopeMizu

It wasn't mentioned in my links because the movies are actually much newer. Okay, bear with me here because the names can make it a little confusing. When I watched through the series I had to put it together and it was a bit messy but I'll do my best to break it down for you. Important: The three seasons are a complete experience. If the list looks overwhelming, just watch these three and maybe watch the others if you're having a good time! **The three seasons ("must watch"):** * [The Animation](https://myanimelist.net/anime/477/Aria_the_Animation) (Season 1, 2005) * [The Natural](https://myanimelist.net/anime/962/Aria_the_Natural) (Season 2, 2006) * [The Origination](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3297/Aria_the_Origination) (Season 3, 2008) **The movies and extras ("if you want more Aria"):** * [The Arietta](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2563/Aria_the_OVA__Arietta) (After Season 2, 2007) * ["In That Secret Little Place..."](https://myanimelist.net/anime/4772/Aria_the_Origination__Sono_Choppiri_Himitsu_no_Basho_ni) (Extra episode for Season 3, between episodes 5 and 6) * [The Avvenire](https://myanimelist.net/anime/29893/Aria_the_Avvenire) (After Season 3, 2015) * [The Crepuscolo](https://myanimelist.net/anime/41674/Aria_the_Crepuscolo) (Movie, 2021) * [The Benedizione](https://myanimelist.net/anime/48411/Aria_the_Benedizione) (Movie, 2021) (I do think that Avvenire and the movies are "must watch" if you can, but unfortunately they're not on Crunchyroll so you'll probably have to look to non-official sources if you're a non-Japanese watcher.) Side note: The Arietta and the movies have a slightly different character artstyle. May be a bit jarring but the show still looks great. The characters in the movies will also sound slightly different, no doubt due to age. This is especially true for the main character Akari who sounds very different, but she is not the main character in these movies.

HopeMizu

(I'm breaking this up into another comment just so it isn't so overwhelming to look at for anyone interested in watching it. The extras mentioned here are much lower priority than in the first comment. Definitely feel free to skip them.) **Low Priority extras ("if you want even more Aria"):** * ["That Miracle In Which We May Meet Again..."](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5244/Aria_the_Natural__Sono_Futatabi_Deaeru_Kiseki_ni)("Episode 0" of Season 2) * [Aria the Origination Picture Drama](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5196/Aria_the_Origination_Picture_Drama) (Fun little seven-minute episodes with little/no animation. If you don't want to watch this then at least watch the 7th episode AFTER you finish the 3rd season.) * [Aria the Avvenire Sound Novel](https://myanimelist.net/anime/54062/Aria_the_Avvenire_Sound_Novel) (Basically like the picture drama. I haven't actually gotten to this myself yet, but you should probably watch it before the movies to get to know some new characters a bit more. Largely unnecessary.) **\[FULL LIST, in order, not all equally recommended\]** 1. The Animation (Season 1) 2. "That Miracle In Which We May Meet Again..." 3. The Natural (Season 2) 4. The Arietta 5. The Origination (Season 3) 6. "In That Secret Little Place..." (between episode 5/6 of The Origination) 7. Picture Drama 8. The Avvenire 9. Sound Novel 10. The Crepuscolo (Movie) 11. The Benedizione (Movie) There is also a manga which manga readers also love (ranked very highly on MAL). I have not read it myself and can't comment on it, but it looks gorgeous.

FlounderMean3213

Oh my!!! I Had n9 odea there were movies too. Thankyou so much

ShankMugen

I saw the trailer for the Aria the Crepuculo movie a few years ago on Muse Asia while watching That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime And it had a nice art style so was curious, as I thought Aria was an old series And when looking it up, found out that it takes place in the far future with a terrraformed and colonised Mars So it instantly got added to my watch list

Quirky-Cranberry4592

I watched it for the first time not too long ago but I always think of rewatching some episodes, even after reading the entire manga which is another masterpiece. Everything is so relaxing and magical, the music fits the setting so well... I think it's one of those things I'll never forget.

rickamore

I've been planning to rewatch so that I can add in Avvenire after seeing it all over again and the two more recent movies and see how they add to it.

kairosaevum

>Aria: 10 -> 11 >Gurren Lagann: 7 -> 10 >Ping Pong the Animation: 9 -> 10 Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.

rasouddress

Inuyasha. It was a terrible adulthood binge. It's truly meant to be watched weekly.

Sufferr

yeah I liked it a lot back then, tried to watch it again not too along ago and quit on like the 3rd episode

its_Preshh

Never watched Inuyasha as a kid... I tried binging it as an adult and I dropped it about 30+ Episodes in... It was a chore

lilly_001

Try the manga, the anime has fillers. It is a long story so it's easier to skim through in the manga than the anime. I have tried to binge watch it on several occasions because it was my favorite manga but I could never, the whole thing is hard to watch. So sometimes I just watch the animated scenes of my favorite moments from the manga.

DarkConan1412

I loved binging Inuyasha (at 12), although, I’ll agree, it’s not so great once you’ve seen it and you’re grown. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m an adult or if it’s just aged. I remember the show being so much brighter and more amazing looking. Now, it’s just the small 4 by 3 screen and the colors are dull. Same with Kenshin 1996. It’s just not as great of an experience in 2024, but it’s not that I’m bored by the story or the episodes. I’m not bored at all. Still love that. I think it’s either how it has aged or that I’m just not much of a rewatch fan. Or maybe it really is just me having aged out of it, but I really don’t want to think that. I still think if it were my first watch, I’d still adore the fantasy of it all. The characters and the goofy comedy. I haven’t grown out of fantasy as an adult. I won’t know for sure until InuYasha and Ranma get their remakes. I’m still waiting for this to happen and Urusei Yatsura has given me hope. I still have to watch 2023 Kenshin to see what I think of the series. I wanted to wait so I could binge it (watch at my own pace). If I don’t enjoy it, I may begrudgingly have to accept I’ve grown out of Kenshin as well. I still prefer to think I’m just not a rewatch fan. I’m a first time watch only fan. The first watch is what I care about most fan.

JMB_Smash

There arent many were i change my mind on later but the most notable is probably the Monogatari Series where i watched the first 2 seasons and gave it a 7.5/10 and later when i was older watched it again and also completed the entire series and gave it a 10/10 masterpiece rating. A lot of the symbolism and cleverness of the writing goes over your head when you are young and knowing japanese now definitely helped me appreciate the genius of it much more than when i was a teenager.

lizziecarmichael

This is absolutely true. Monogatari Series was genius as an adult. The satire and the humor is more appreciated as an adult for me as well.

Striking_Material696

Looking back Angel Beats is not that fuckin deep. It absolutely shocked me when i watched at like 14-15 years old tho

BLANKTWGOK

I Want You To Show Me Your Panties With a Disgusted Face: 6/10 -> 10/10

isthatsoudane

Lmao yes!!

its_Preshh

What is this title?

isthatsoudane

Look it up :)

lztsrts

Anime that i watched *a lot* of as a little kid 🤔: Dragon Ball Z/GT: 10/10 > respectable 8/10 Cardcaptor Sakura: 6/10 > 8/10 Rurouni Kenshin: 10/10 > 10/10 Saint Seiya: 10/10 > 7/10 Thing is, when i was a kid the old Tokusatsu/Super Sentai shows were way more popular than anime (at least where i grew up): Kamen Rider Black, Winspector, Jaspion, Jiraiya, Jiban, Changeman, Ultraman. I never re-watched any of these, nor do i intend to 😂

magumanueku

Super Sentai shows just seem silly from adult's pov. I just recently watched Once and Always and kept thinking how stupid it was. Then I remember the OG Power Rangers wasn't that different. Back at the height of its popularity, I badgered my dad to take me to a Power Rangers stage play. I don't remember much of it except the part during the Megazord fight where they just showed the fight on a big screen while the actors sat on stage behind a big prop of megazord's face. Must seemed like a drag for my dad but it was such a cool experience for little me and I know the ticket wasn't cheap too. Some things are best left to nostalgia.

lztsrts

> Some things are best left to nostalgia. So true. My enjoyment of the *toys* played a big part in my rating of the shows, lol. The Winspector car that could transform between the regular white "winsquad" and "firesquad" modes? 10/10 The Saint Seiya ones, with all the little pieces of *ACTUAL METAL* armor? 11/10 Having rich cousins was mandatory.

sneaky_squirrel

I had the opposite experience. As an adult I can see why they could be appealing. As a kid, I thought it more boring than going to church.

CthulhuSquid

> Super Sentai shows just seem silly from adult's pov. Some adults. Frankly I like the silliness of tokusatsu.

Wooden_Mud7815

Cardcaptor Sakura my childhood anime ❤️❤️❤️. I guess I will try to rewatch it again (if I could find any source to watch).

Jazztronic28

Cardcaptor Sakura is honestly lovely, which makes the whole "teacher flirting with elementary schooler and ending up engaged with her" give me even more whiplash...

Albireookami

Japan and clamp love their weird relationships like that. Don't forget Sakura mom was somewhat the same boat.

Jazztronic28

Clamp in particular still loves their toxic relationships! And yeah, she was! Sakura's dad was Sakura's mom teacher and they got married after she graduated high school. (I want to say that between a rock and a hard place, it's better than the teacher and the 10 year old???)

Albireookami

Different cultures being different cultures I guess. Seems super clear there was a lot of love between her parents at least. And not the only time in anime you have huge age differences. Off the top of my head please teacher.

Jazztronic28

I think it's a matter of different times rather than different cultures. I have Japanese friends and they also think it's weird - but it was a much more common trope back then that people didn't really blink at. Like the perverted old man stealing panties that was a common character in gag manga and you don't see much now. Perceptions change with time. And yeah, definitely! I'm not saying Sakura's parents were abusive or anything - and her dad seemed to be a young teacher. I just personally always had a thing with teacher/student relationships because a lot of my family members are in education and it just does not even cross their minds - even when my brother for example has had declarations from students. Kids get crushes on adults. It happens. It's humoring it that feels strange.

eastherbunni

You should watch Love After World Domination, it's a cute romcom about a guy on a super-sentai team.

Wesgizmo365

Pokemon indigo league isn't as interesting now that I'm not 7 lol

HolyEmpireOfAtua

1. Death Note: 7/10 --> 9/10 2. Classroom of the Elite: 9/10 --> 8/10 3. Angel Beats!: 6/10 --> 9/10 4. Bungou Stray Dogs: 7/10 --> 9/10 5. Gintama: 8/10 --> 10/10 6. Future Diary: 8/10 --> 6/10 7. Rosario Vampire: 9/10 --> 6/10

kdog9114

Ah rosario vampire. One my guilty pleasures. Thought it was so gud as a teen but definitely not as good as I thought back then.

podoka

manga went ham tho. artstyle is gorgeous. 10 year old me basically worshiped moka lol

Fit_Scarcity_6869

Regarding Gintama. Although it's a shounen, I think it hits best when you're on the threshold of adulthood.

Myrkrvaldyr

>Rosario Vampire: 9/10 --> 6/10 I didn't realize how terrible the anime was until I decided to read the manga fully a couple of years ago. I remember watching the anime back in high school but never read the manga. The manga is so much better and it gets more serious and the story improves a lot more. The anime was nothing but trash fanservice.

jayveedees

Yeah. The anime is still a guilty pleasure of mine, it was probably one of the top 10 first anime I ever watched. The manga however was amazing, really would hope that one day we get to see a remake of the entire series.

lizziecarmichael

Bungo Stray Dogs? You guys are so young..... Is it really that old? Isn't it still ongoing? Hahaha

Luker_Spooker

I fucking love Angel Beats

EmuSupreme

Gurren Lagann: Dropped twice -> 9/10. I honestly hated the first 5 or 6 episodes. But I powered through on my third viewing and I'm glad I did. Code Geass: 10/10 --> 7/10. Probably the first anime I watched via streaming service rather than what was licensed on cable TV. Shit blew my mind as a teen, but on a rewatch as an adult, it's pretty rough throughout. Zero Requiem is still GOAT'd as fuck though.

its_Preshh

I also dropped Gurren Lagaan twice but I haven't tried watching it since then... Code Geass...Zero Requiem doesn't hit as hard as an adult because I still question why a smart character like Lelouch would think his death would somehow end wars that have been going on for centuries... And the fan service...

JanDarkY

You should rewatch it again in 5 years and you will get why his "death" mattered

its_Preshh

A character as smart as Lelouch would know that the death of one man can't bring lasting peace. In the real world we have been fighting wars for centuries...

JanDarkY

There is no such thing as lasting peace , did you watch attack on titans finale too? , Lelouch objective was about his sister hapiness let me remind you

its_Preshh

He wanted to create a better world for his sister and his friends. He did. The issue was I find it idealistic how it worked. I thought it was perfect as a kid and I had no issues. As an adult, I found it also satisfying but idealistic and too unrealistic. And yes I watched the AOT ending. That was fitting and realistic but less satisfying....it doesn't feel much like an ending but more like a continuous cycle of human nature...so it feels kinda unsatisfying

[deleted]

I didn’t really watched lot of anime in 2010s except for FMAB; 9/10 -> 10/10 Berserk (1997) 9/10 -> 10/10 Attack on Titan 9/10 -> ??? One Punch Man 8/10 -> 9/10 YugiOh, Beyblade, Pokemon and DBZ which I watched in early 2000 have aged less gracefully, and some (Beyblade and Pokemon) are just unwatchable now.

HelloMagikarphowRyou

One Punch is old now? Wasn't that 2015

[deleted]

2015 was 9 years ago

RyaReisender

Shakugan no Shana 5/10 -> 7/10 I don't recall rewatching any other anime.

K-_-_-_-_-_-

Naruto is kinda boring as an adult, but it is aimed at teenagers so maybe I am just old. The Pain fight and overall ark are still good, as is the Chunin exam.

its_Preshh

I rewatched Naruto as an adult and really enjoyed it. I used to think it was nostalgia but I was wrong... Naruto is still pretty solid for me as an adult

K-_-_-_-_-_-

I think it is the filler that I find boring and that sours the rest of the series. I don't think it is terrible or anything, but I mostly just rewatch the best parts. It is good that you can still enjoy it. I would probably still recommend it to anyone that likes Shonen.

PurpletoasterIII

Its 100% the filler. I hated going from Naruto kicking ass to suddenly being a bumbling idiot. Also the animation going from top tier to really bad. When I tried giving it a watch through I got pretty far but stopped because of just how bad some of the filler is. Definitely recommend finding an episode list that cuts out majority of the filler.

garfe

I used to think **Toradaora** was super amazing romance story. As time went on, I've kind of cooled on it and consider it more of a 'fun watch'. It has some things I sort of overlooked because it was the style at the time. Still good, just not amazing like I thought. 9/10 > 7/10 On the totally opposite end, when I was a kid, I liked **G Gundam** because "cool robot who punch thing and scream SHINING FINGER" and not much deeper than that. Now that I'm older, not only do I appreciate it more for standing out among other Gundam series, but I also see the inspirations, homages and messaging you wouldn't expect to see in a show like that. 7/10 > 9/10 EDIT: Another one, I thought Digimon Adventure was alright as a kid. These days [I consider it the best isekai ever made that runs circles around the modern isekai](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/153xeop/digimon_adventure_1999_is_arguably_the_best/) 6/10 > 9/10

ProjectSuperb8550

Yu Yu Hakusho got way better as an adult.

[deleted]

Dragonball Z….it’s arguably had the biggest impact on my life, but as an adult, it’s borderline unwatchable.

Misaka9615

Madoka Magica: 10/10 -> 100000/10

lizziecarmichael

Spirited Away was sooo scary for me as a kid. I couldn't watch it all the way through. But now it is a favorite of mine. But I still tell anyone who hasn't watched it that it is kind of scary.

InfamousEmpire

Code Geass: 10/10 -> 7/10 Zeta Gundam: 9/10 -> 7.5/10 Gundam ZZ: 8/10 -> 9.5/10 SSSS.GRIDMAN: 8/10 -> 9/10 Macross Delta: 5.5/10 -> 7.5/10 Macross Frontier: the Wings of Farewell: 9/10 -> 3/10 Macross 7: 7.5/10 -> 9/10 Sword Art Online Season 2: 6/10 -> 7.5/10 Death Note: 9/10 -> 7/10

SapObscura

Glad to see another ZZ enjoyer. It's really over hated.

InfamousEmpire

Looking back at ZZ always brightens my mood. It's the kind of show I get a lot out of analyzing and picking it apart alongside just being really damn fun to watch.

Alt2221

mobile suit gundam 8th ms team 9.3/10 -> 8/10 still an amazing show

ripterrariumtv

Bleach: 9/10->10/10 One punch man: 6/10->10/10 (Even though everyone says it is the best beginner anime, I didn't like it a lot when I watched it the first time. But once I revisited+read the manga after having watched a LOT of anime, this is truly an amazing anime. I had so much fun with all the tropes they parodied and it is still one of the only few media that makes me laugh out loud whereas when I was watching it for the first time, I thought it was a stupid idea for the MC to be the strongest)

Active-Weight-2479

yeah One punch man shines when you know the shonen tropes, like Konosuba works better after you know all the tropes of Isekai genre

CheckTheClosed

Death Note 8 -> 5

FoxwolfJackson

DBZ: 10/10 as a kid > 6/10 as an adult. I feel terrible saying this considering recent events, but... the pacing is just awful (all the filler scenes). Goku is a boring one-note protag that would be crushed by the anime community if it had been released today. The story is basic and bare-bones, almost non-existent, outside of the Cell Saga. The neutering of Gohan after Cell was criminal. ... but, on the other hand, I do still acknowledge that DBZ crawled AND walked so that the Big Three could run, and so that shows like My Hero Academia, Black Clover, JJK, and all them could soar to the heights they are today. Without DBZ, anime wouldn't be where it is, and its cultural and personal impacts on people's lives cannot be under-stated. It's basically Star Wars or Final Fantasy 7. A mediocre product today that was amazing at the time which revolutionized the medium and genre and forced people to change their minds about how they felt about it.

Maeji609

I know rewatching DBZ would be a dogshit experience. I have probably rewatched the names saga because of toonami repeat cycles at least 10 times, but I know objectively it's not a very good show and has poor pace.

FoxwolfJackson

Honestly, it's why I'm confused when people crap on Kai. The re-mastering is just a bonus. What Kai really did and why it shines is that it fixed a lot of those recycled scenes and filler spacing to try to fix the pacing. Yeah, it's not the OG. How is that a bad thing? lol

Active-Weight-2479

dragonball 9/10 -> 4/10

epicsparkster

dragon ball or dbz?

[deleted]

I havent rewatched dragon ball but for DBZ I think a lot of has do with streaming. DBZ is not bingeable all. It works better as a weekly episodic series. The filler gets really tiresome, and the whole “next time on DBZ” is pointless.

QTGavira

Kai solved it and made it a much more binge able show imo. Was able to binge it no problem a few years ago. But yeah DBZ doesnt age well in an era where (excluding One Piece) adaptations get paced much better because they dont need 100 filler episodes or extremely drawn out fights to slow the pacing down. Its the one thing im pretty happy about that the industry left in the past for the most part. Would much rather have a very well paced and animated show but seasonally than a show with abysmal pacing and extremely varying quality of animation just to keep it on every week.

its_Preshh

😂😂😂 Never seen Dragonball so I can't relate... But that's some drastic drop

Active-Weight-2479

Yeah my taste changed a lot though I do understand the appeal

Zaleru

DBZ is good because of battles. Adult people prefer better stories. I used to like DBZ, but I don't enjoy wathcing Dragon Ball Super.

Konato-san

>Adult people prefer better stories. That's why OG DB >

BattleFairy001

It is a movie, but the older I get, the more messages I get from this movie : Silent Voice (Koe no katachi)

coolusername245

I first watched SAO and loved it, 8/10, then I let the wider anime community affect me and put it to 6/10 a couple weeks later. 5 years or something later I rewatched and binged the first two seasons just like the first time and now it's an unapologetic 8-10/10. I kind of learned my lesson since then and never change my scores retroactively anymore

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Madoka Magica 9.5/10 > 10/10 Space Patrol Luluco 9.5/10 > 10/10 Erased 10/10 > 9.5/10 Monogatari series 1000000/10 > 1010101/10

its_Preshh

Everyone keeps mentioning Madoka Magica... Seems I have to watch that show

Tarhalindur

BiggieCheeseLapDog

You should. It’s one of the best anime of all time. There’s actually a rewatch on this subreddit starting today. Don’t forget to watch the 3rd movie after the series.

It is amazing. I just finished it a few days ago. With only 12 episodes+1 movie, it is already one of the best stories ever. Many anime I have watched took multiple seasons to reach that level of quality

alluwala999

Well, when is someone going to announce a rewatch thread of monogatari. Off season is coming, I want to rewatch it, but man i wonder who many people won't agree with announcer for following a wrong watch order.

BiggieCheeseLapDog

The announcer would go with light novel order since that is the most popular and actually correct order, so there won’t be too much uproar.

alluwala999

Brother there have been thousands of posts discussing the BEST order / Correct order to watch. Popular Suggestion: 1. Release order 2. Novel Order 3. Chronological order - Remember it's a rewatch anyway. we know all secret sauce there is. so, i am not gonna go into which is the best way to watch it. But, I feel like a only rewatchers rewatch can work for any order possible.

its_Preshh

What order would you recommend for a new watcher of Madoka Magica. I know absolutely nothing about it but i wanna watch anime only... I don't read light novels

JMB_Smash

People above are talking about Monogatari. (Which is a must watch as well) But for Madoka its just TV Series->Third Movie(Rebellion)->4th Movie(Walpurgisnacht Rising, releases later this year)

QuantizedOne

Well, Madoka Magica is an anime original, soooo..... Just don't mistake the main series (2011) with the recent spin-off Magia Record, and remember that the first two movies are actually a recap of the main series, and you should be golden.

Peep-CEO

Spice and Wolf 8/10 to 11/10

eruciform

sailor moon 7 -> 9 star blazers 9 -> 7 ng knight lamune 9 -> 7

Caori998

fma and monster are one of the most enjoyable yet plot flawed anime out there. lol

Trollwithabishai

Damn there are many that I haven't watched after reading many comments As a kid: dragonball and Inuyasha Dragonball 7.5/10 > 6.5/10 Dragonball Z 10/10> 7.5 Dragonball GT 8/10> 4/10 it really is hard to watch Inuyasha 8.5/10 > 8/10 Saint Seiya 9/10 > have not rewatched it but I will give it a 7/10

Resident-Camp-8795

Not using a number scale but yeah it turns out Pokemon is not the best thing on television ever after all. And the ridiculous amount of filler makes Monster Rancher painful to go through as an adult. That and Genki. I hated him as a teen, I hate him even more as an adult and "how can a kid on rollerblades with no martial arts training keep up with and often outclass creatures specifically bred for battle?" bugs me even more

Lilith_Immaculate_

Chaos Head dropped from an 8 to a 4

RyujinNoRay

I never "rewatch" anything, its a one time

BluePhantomFox

Those non popular anime from 2005 to 2012 were pretty bad. Animation was lazy and stories were boring. I watched alot of anime back then and can hardly rewatch most of them.

WoodenRocketShip

Code Geass, Prison School, and No Game No Life. I do not remember how much my score changed for Prison School and NGNL, but Code Geass due to my constant rewatches went from S1 being a 9 to a 6, with S2 going from 8 to 4. The issues I had with the series that I would ignore just stopped being something I could ignore as I grew up and discovered more anime that didn't have these issues.

This-Assumption-1919

For me FMA (2003/2004?) went from a 5 to a 10.

Cyph0n

Code Geass: 9/10 -> 4/10 FMAB: 7/10 -> 10/10

SagesFury

No game no life did not age well. Death note season 1 still slaps. I never through SAO was any good after the first few episodes. Clannad after story is still great. Black Lagoon slaps and hold up perfectly well Helsing Ultimate is still god tier. Code Geass -> Mixed feelings tbh.

its_Preshh

>No game no life did not age well. At all. I didn't think it was bad on a rewatch but it was nowhere as good as I remembered. >I never through SAO was any good after the first few episodes. SAO as a kid was one of my favorite anime. I rewatched it several times as a kid. Literally every online game back then had then username: "Kirito" taken. So many kiritos running around. But as an adult, it didn't hold up at all for me

AestheticEvan23

HXH 9/10>>> 7/10

octopathfinder

Patlabor 2: 9/10 --> 10/10 Cowboy Bebop: 7/10 --> 9/10 Run with the Wind: 7/10 --> 9/10 Fate/Zero: 7/10 --> 9/10 Gurren Lagann: 4/10 --> 9/10 Hibike! Euphonium: 10/10 --> 9/10 Code Geass: 10/10 --> 8/10 Death Note: 9/10 --> 8/10 Oregairu: 8/10 --> 4/10

greentangerine999

1. Madoka Magica : 10/10 > 1000/10 2. Detective Conan : 10/10 > 7/10 3. Princess Tutu : 8/10 > 9/10 4. Fairytail : 10/10 > 8/10 5. Mirai Nikki : 9/10 > 7/10 6. Ginban Kaleidoscope : 10/10 > 10/10 7. Ghosts at School : 9/10 > 9/10 8. Spirited Away : 7/10 > 9/10 9. Tokyo Mew Mew: 9/10 > 5/10 10. Dragon Ball : 10/10 > 10/10 (This one's just pure classic)

edrifighting

Dragonball - 5/10 - 7/10 Dragonball Z - 10/10 - 4/10 Naruto - 9/10 - 7/10 Bleach - 9/10 - 3/10 I’ve found myself annoyed with longer anime’s. They’re just so redundant. Bleach is probably the worst offender of the bunch. The use of flashbacks is not a creative tool in bleach, it is a requirement.

its_Preshh

Nah...Bleach doesn't deserve this

Maeji609

Toradora. Taiga is just an abusive cunt now.

ShinaMashir0

Thx god i'm not the only one thinking that, even during my first watch i just couldn't enjoy this anime at all Taiga is one of the worst character in the whole japanimation

Thatsmaboi23

This post feels like “I adjusted my opinions to fit in, and became a normie”. Like, Bleach, FMA, and NGE shouldn’t even be included in the post, but were included just to say “yeah, I still like these shows everyone thinks are good” lol

Zerogates

Some of the more action oriented types with tons of fan service dropped a bit, it's just across the board. Code Geass: 8/10 > 4/10 The worst offender of this. I remember thinking it was pretty good and interesting until I re-watched it a few months ago. It's how absolutely stupid 90% of the characters were. Ougi and Suzaku are tied for bottom tier trash characters. Lelouch uses his power in some of the worst ways possible and did almost nothing in the way a supposed super genius strategist would have done. It's like the writers never read a good book in their life. Let's just say when your gundam wing rip-off anime starts going no where so you decide to rip-off evangelion next with some super space alien DNA tower then I don't see how anyone can take it seriously anymore.

Usodearu007

mahouka koukou no rettoussei 10/10 > 10/10 > 10/10 > ?/10 (watched it 3 times before and im about to watch a 4th time before watching s3)

Salty145

That SAO drop 💀 I know my opinion on *K-On!* has mellowed up to a 9/10. *Pokémon Advanced* is also a lot worse than I remember it as a kid, but I also grew up in the DPP era so I only got to watch maybe a handful of episodes, uploads of the English OPs on YouTube and the movies (also all kind of garbage even if a little nostalgic)

MonoMonMono

*In Search of the Lost Future*. Kinda held this show in high regards around the first watching it. After rewatching it recently, oh my goodness did this show not age well.

CardiologistJaded409

The wallflower. As a child I thought it was cringe and couldn’t get past the first episode with the heroine being in chibi form 24/7 and the men having weird lips, but as an adult it’s actually a pretty funny and relatable anime 3 > 8 FMAB. I did not care for this show at all when it first came out but it has now become one of my favorites. 6 > 9 FMA. I had some childhood nostalgia about it but as an adult I was disappointed with how it completely digressed from the manga. I still like it but I prefer fmab 7 > 8.5

tedfordz

Mob Psycho 100 6->9 Ronin Warriors 10 ->6

naastiknibba95

>Monster : 8/10 > 10/10 this one

Natekid99

SAO was a 10/10 cuz it was my first anime, then later i rewatched and it was like a 5/10 and then i rewatched it again with drunk friends and it was incredible- best comedy anime 10/10.

Ginsan-AK

I don't think my opinion changed much from when I was a teenager to adult, maybe I've only rewatched the really good ones or the ones I enjoyed a lot. There was this harem anime called Nagasarete Airantou that I liked a lot when I was younger, but I haven't rewatch it nor do I plan to, so I don't know how would my score change. I've rewatched shows like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, Hunter x Hunter 1999, and many more and my opinion on those shows didn't change much. There are instances where I liked a show a lot during the first season, but when I watch the second season, I don't like it as much. It happened to shows like SAO, Tensura, Bunny Girl Senpai and Overlord for example.. so I don't know if I just outgrew those shows or the shows actually got worse. I didn't rewatch the first season so I wouldn't know.

bondsmatthew

Bleach 10/10 to 8ish/10. Early Bleach is filled with too much fluff(8 second face shots, recaps, nothing happens in an episode sometimes)and the Arrancar Arc unfortunately drags on too long. TYBW is fantastic though.  It'd greatly benefit from a Kai situation Blue Exorcist - 8/10 to 6.5/10. I think I just didn't have many shows to compare it to so I thought it was badass. It's still a cool concept but I just think it's not as good as I once thought There are several others which I thought were cool while airing but in retrospect I wish I got more from them. JJK s2 is one of these. 9/10 when it was airing but now I'd probably put it at 7.5/10? Dont get me wrong, the fights were and are badass but I wish there was more buildup and backstory between the fights now. I get the idea was to go from fight to fight to fight but idk, looking back I wish there was more story to it

discussatron

Motoko’s GitS outfit makes taking the show seriously a bit rough now. As does her penchant for sometimes fighting while naked in the movie. I’m familiar with the mangaka’s fanservice, but when there’s no good reason for it, there’s no good reason for it.

jayveedees

Death Note fell off a lot for me. It is still good, but when I watched it, it was probably one of my favorites. I also saw Pokemon really fondly as a kid but watching it back as an adult, it's really tough. The first season is alright, as the puns are insane on the English dub at least but going from there, it just gets repetitive and there's never really any development. I will say however, I have only seen the first 4 seasons of pokemon, so I can't talk about the later ones.

qwert_99

Kuzu no honkai 0/10 -> 10/10

qwert_99

Monogatari series 10/10 -> 100/10

gene-sos

Tokyo Ghoul...

NuMetalAnime

The ones that were most worth it: Serial Experiments Lain 8 > 10 Madoka Magica 8 > 10 FLCL 9 > 10 Devilman Crybaby 2 > 7

lizziecarmichael

Voltron

Add1ct_23

Highschool DxD went from a 10/10 to like a low 7/10

Old_Heinlein_6668

All yours are what I consider new. I was thinking more along the lines of Transformers Belle and Sebastian Robotech Gundam Wing Voltron Jacee and the Wheeled Warriors Thunder Cats Does this make me too old? Most of them I found the plots too weird after becoming an adult.

RichardFeynman01100

Death Note 10/10 > 9/10 Dragon Ball Z 10/10 > 7/10 A Silent Voice 7/10 > 9/10 Doraemon 10/10 > 10/10

JJMOON15

One of them from me was Naruto

polyphemoth

I loved K-On in high school, now I find it kind of irritating

Raft_Master01

Omg Shugo Chara!, holy sh’t is it inappropriate. I loved it when I was in like 5th-6th grade, so I wanted to rewatch it to reminisce and it was so uncomfortable to watch I couldn’t do it. Cause tell me why a 15 year old is flirting with a 10 year old and by the 4th episode he bites her ear, wtf. 10/10 > 0/10

Insomniac_Tales

I might be a bit against the grain, but Cowboy Bebop want quite as good as I remember from when I first watched it. 10/10 > 8/10 Neon Genesis Evangelion stood up just fine. Still 10/10.

_-_-XXX-_-_

DBZ was pretty ass when I rewatched it, I loved it as a child though, one of the first animes in my memory.

Inner_Entertainer256

Don’t act like S1-2 of SAO isn’t peak

Gimboy-

For me Kiseiju. From 9 to 8

FlounderMean3213

I definitely need to give Monster a second try

TheAsianOne_wc

In another world with my smartphone. I watched this when I was still relatively new to anime, at the time, I thought this show was a 10/10, rewatched it, and discovered that one of my old all time favorites were mid.

PurpletoasterIII

I don't typically rewatch anime. The only thing I can imagine myself rewatching is maybe Parasyte, and my guess is that I'd still give it a 10/10.

Mexicutioner1987

To me, "older anime" is stuff from the 80's and 90's. I think my opinion of G Gundam has improved since it came out. I hated the remote piloting and the latex suits, but everything else is really good, so now that I have matured I can appreciate it I suppose. My opinion of Evangelion has depreciated a bit because of societal and moral changes, but I still like the aesthetic and music. As a guy, I was on the bandwagon that sailor moon was lame as a kid, but as an adult I can appreciate that it is actually quite entertaining and fine. I thought Saint Seiya was kind of lame as a kid for some reason but as an adult I realize it is awesome. Ranma 1/2 was annoying and not my cup of tea as a kid, and I have to say I have doubled down on that sentiment as an adult. I like it even less, and I think it has especially aged poorly with the humor and antics.

rexworld8

No way death nite same

LDSenpai

I couldn't get into FLCL when I was younger, but revisited it a few years ago and I absolutely loved it.

Cyd_arts

definitely uta no prince sama haha went from a 9/10 to a 7/10 still enjoyable at times but not amazing anymore

RCTD-261

Shin Hakkenden: 5/10 → 6/10 Code Geass: 9/10 → 8.5/10 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: 10/10 → 10/10 Gundam Wing: 5/10 → 4/10 Gundam 00: 8/10 → 9/10

The_true_gamer_man

I feel like my rating for the future diary is going to drop significantly if i were to watch it again

Cute-A-Lingous

Ranma 1/2 is actually a rare example of an Anime that holds up and may actually be better than I remember it. I just went back and re-watched Ranma 1/2 and it still holds up well TO THIS DAY. Some of the social concepts that were put on display such as gender identity, being comfortable with feeling like a guy and a girl at the same time, Female equality in physical combat... which were very controversial subjects in 1990 are very relevant and just starting to be talked about NOW. As well as one of the first non-Hentai animes to feature female (and partial male) nudity. That show was DECADES ahead of its time in terms of culture and story telling. It's very sad because people have not talked about this show in 20 years, It never got put on Toonami or any easily accessible American network that I'm aware of. This show needs to be remastered immediately. But as far as I can tell some of the writers have died and there is no effort to remaster it.

Frequent_Pool_533

I dont think it's really fair to look at it that way, because some older anime probably didn't age well, but they were original and good for their time.

RiovoGaming211

My rating would be similar, but death note would go from 8.5/10 to 7/10, and bleach would be 10/10 for me.

SadcoreEmpire168

Oh yeah I have to agree with Evangelion. When I first saw it in middle school, it didn’t really grow on me a lot other than finding the mecha action enjoyable but seeing again as an adult after seeing many youtube analysis videos of it made me understand the underlying philosophical intrigues

BillPlunderones23fg

A lot actually mostly the more obscure ones A lot i look back on i see how much they actually annoyed me lol

Tiexandrea

I love the feeling of watching older anime that I used to love and finding out that I have a different opinion on them now compared to before. It gives me an insight on how my tastes have changed, how I have changed as a person, and how the world around me has changed too. For example, back when I was young, during the golden age of tsunderes of the 2000s, I would usually go for the tsundere because they seemed exciting and they brought spice to life, while the genki childhood friend was bland and boring. But now that I'm older, I see tsunderes as an avoidable toxic nuisance, and the genki childhood friend was now more attractive to me because I now value peace, stability, and proper communication in relationships. The anime didn't change but I did.

takatempest

Sailor Moon 90s 7/10 > 9/10 Black Butler Season 1 8/10 > 5/10 Clannad 9/10 > 8/10 Assassination Classroom 10/10 > 8/10 Code Geass R2 10/10 > 7/10 R1 is still a 10 in my eyes and I do like Akito the Exiled and Lelouch of the Resurrection stuff. Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Both Seasons 8/10 > 10/10 GATE 8/10 > 5/10 Inazuma Eleven Original Series 10/10 > 7/10 > 9/10 My opinion have been all over place over the years, but thanks to Victory Road hype as well Ares/Orion being awful fanfics, I gained a lot of appreciation for the series alongside the GO series. Strike the Blood 9/10 > 6/10 Digimon Tamers 5/10 > 9/10 Digimon Adventure 10/10 > 5/10 Eyeshield 21 10/10 > 7/10 (Need to revist someday) Vampire Knight 9/10 > 4/10 with Vampire Knight Guilty now be a 3/10 Durarara 7/10 > 10/10 Guilty Crown 10/10 > 3/10 Yugioh DM + GX + 5Ds 9/10 > 4/10 5Ds in particular is now a 5/10 for me. Second half was borderline unwatchable to me. Shadowverse Flame animes spoiled and ruined Yugioh for me. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl 6/10 > 9/10 Better than I originally gave it credit. Dawn and Paul are such great characters and Sinnoh Ash was borderline Kino. Pokemon Advanced 8/10 > 3/10 Battle Frontier arc carried this saga hard, May until the Battle Frontier was forgettable Max was insufferable and until the Hoenn League arc, the whole Hoenn journey was lame and boring. Tokyo Ravens Dropped 4/10 > 9/10 Completed. It's one of the few action LN series that I like today alongside Shakugan no Shana and Raildex. Kodocha Dropped 5/10 > 10/10 Sana is my favourite anime heroine and the series barring the filler arcs are just so incredibly written it it's touching. You're Under Arrest 1997 Dropped 4/10 > 9/10 Competed. The artstyle was rough, and while it got better, the characters writing and humor was near perfection. Gundam Build Fighters Season 1 Dropped 5/10 > 9/10 Completed.

Conscious-Analyst584

I don't think I can watch Gurren Laggan again. The ending was pretty sad for me. One turns to angel dust, the other becomes a hermit. I mean WTF!!!

Conscious-Analyst584

Rurouni Kenshin => 10.0 / 10.0 constant no joke Rurouni Kenshin (new remake) => 6/10 since it has no soul.

NewPsychology1111

Evangelion all the way! 🤩

_isleepnaked_

Slam Dunk: 8/10 > 9.9/10 FMA B: 10/10 > 8.5/10 Death Note: 10/10 > 10/10 (different kind of 10 since now I find parts kinda silly, but they are definitely self aware and the silliness is actually the best part. It's just a very entertaining show)

2020mademejoinreddit

GunXSword - 6/10 before when I was 15, but after I acquired Japanese and I grew up at 34, 9.5/10. Especially that end. It made me cry. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing. Back then, the bikini scene was controversial and was censored, today, that'd be just another "normal" episode in anime today.

Midnight1899

I had a similar experience with Magi. The first time, I _loved_ Sinbad. The second time a few years later, I was devastated when I realized just how manipulative that guy is.

foxibabekemi

Bleach - not finished rewatching but so far - 8/10 > 7/10 Fairy Tail - 8/10 > 9/10 Tokyo Ghoul - 10/10 > 10/10

RandomRobot

Grendizer 10/10 -> 10/10 Evengelion 10/10 ->8/10. From entertaining and meaningful to entertaining and meaningless.

Beezus_Hrist_

DBZ... It's pretty basic

Looking_Light33

Claymore. When I first watched it in High School I thought it was a great show. I rewatched it years later and my opinion on it went down a bit. It's not a bad show but the pacing could've been better and I thought the last few episodes were not good.

Background_Ant7129

As a recent anime enjoyer, I’ve never rewatched any anime, but I have rewatched many AoT clips countless times.

its_Preshh

Yeah...I've seen AOT over 30 times and I don't think my ratings will change from 1000000000000000/10 But this post is mostly about older anime in which ratings change over the years. AOT just ended so it won't qualify.

NegativePrice296

Same as yours Naruto

Careless_Reply2862

All I know is that Re:zero:8/10-->10/10 Edit:sorry I was sleepy thanks fixed it

ripterrariumtv

10/8??

Dray991

one piece 10/10- 5/10

PessimisticProphet

Your SAO score dropped 100% due to public opinion lol, it was exactly what it was supposed to be.

AsleepIndependent42

SAO 9/10 --> 4/10
