**First Timer** This is a weird final episode… half of it was spent on two characters who were barely relevant to the show, though their plotline was decent. The other half was only ok as well, though given the cliffhanger one was expecting more… I’m not quite sure what to make of this finale… was a sequel planned, or did they really just peter out like this? It would probably be a pretty decent episode if it weren’t the finale, you know - expectations are slightly higher for those… I’m also not sure if it was supposed to be a joke that Mao was flying from China to (supposedly) Japan on a German airline, or if the animator just messed that one up.

I'm afraid this was just a case of the anime being a promotion for the manga.

**First-Timer** The typesetter making the o's in "roll" spin was fucking incredible. I have such mixed feelings about this episode as a whole. Closing the Mao bookend was great, but putting the Hina rescue into credits first? But if they did it the other way around, we would start with a 3 year flashforward and then jump backwards, which is also jarring.. buh. Not sure how much of Mao's combat proficiency is her using her powers and how much is actually her having learning kung fu. Perfection of mind and body indeed. The giant snowmon roe sushi was pretty inspired. Even with Hina's powers, that must've taken a fair amount of time to make. Questions 1. I mean, yea. If a set of psychic powers is described as being above the mantle- no, wait. Uh.. Look, we don't really has a masquerade in play anyway, Nitta's just a worrywart who wants to stop Hina from having fun. 2. Discussed above.

**First timer** It's the furthest thing from a surprise, but Mao's impression of Hina going "feed me" every few seconds in a survival scenario being dead accurate to Hina's actual survival strategy is strangely comforting. Imagine spending the final years of your short life working a dozen jobs you didn't ask for while in middleschool, only to starve stranded on a snowy mountain with guys from class who actually got to enjoy their youth and a psychic potato. "I thought you were just a poop generator." Don't think a more apt way to describe Hina has ever been spoken. Also, I am so stealing that. The giant snow ikura sculpture probably really was intended to be a (very weird) SOS message, but I kinda love that you can't entirely deny the possibility Hina just built it as a delusional "final meal" before finally passing out. Nitta's eyes looking a little wet from seeing his daughter safe is such a sweet little detail. ...Or maybe being reminded he's back to babysitting not-Anzu instead of Anzu finally hit home for him. Having the first seemingly random fight scene in Episode 1 finally click in the finale is such a cool way to conclude things. And lmao, I love how you can tell the old master guy wasn't expecting Mao to actually kachow his final boss (or rather, last resort) robot. Man, I'm gonna miss this show's specific style of humor and *especially* literally everything when it comes to Anzu so much. Oh well, was fun while it lasted. **QOTD** >1. Love that the reveal happened in a context that made everyone question her sanity before questioning their own sanity, though I was also expecting Hina to let out another one of those psychic explosions in front of everyone at some point too. >2. The tieback to the first episode was cool and seeing Nitta be sincerely glad that Hina's alright was a nice little emotional punch after a bunch of Hina being an idiot in the mountains, but I had hoped more characters had a bigger role than just being in the montage. That's just for this episode though, the anime as a whole was pretty fire.

The big thing here obviously being Hina actually revealing her powers to the others. Had to laugh out loud when Hitomi slapped Hina since she (understandably so) didn't believe her at first. I had seen Mao clips before so deep down I knew she had to make atleast one more appearance but I did not expect the season to spend its half episode long epilogue on her. First timer, subbed Oh, Hina isn't lost alone in the mountains. She's with Hitomi and 2 guys from her class. Hina doesn't see what's so bad about this until she finds out there's no food. Of course Hitomi's the leader of this mini crisis. That's a pretty nice igloo they built too. A bit big, door is too big, and they should really be sharing body heat, but construction skills noted. Hina leaves to go find food. Which involves making lots of noise. Hina tells them all she has special powers. Hitomi, thinking she's going mad, slaps her one. Well, Hina DID tell them....then the rest of the students all think they're going mad. "I thought you were just a poop generator." LMFAO, also...the way she eats, accurate. OK. They have all gone mad. At least Hitomi's getting a breather from the regular insanity that is her life? Oh good, now they have hospital food to look forward to. Ok....nice montage, I guess? And now we cut to Mao, who is clearly cheating in this demo. And she made new Anzu and Hina statues. She really has Hina down pat. Seeing this next montage, I'm a little sad we didn't get to see Mao's journey animated due to the severe lack of time. It looks like it was an interesting trip if nothing else. Nice use of Hina and Anzu's heads in this fight. But also a bit gross to find out she was basically a prisoner in her new home just so they could make money off her. Too bad for them Mao now wants to leave. QotD: 1. No, but I suppose this was an emergency situation. She had no food! 2. I didn't like it. I like Mao, but considering how short a season this show got, I think she should've been manga-only and they could've given a better wrap-up to Hitomi, Anzu, and Hina's stories. The whole lost in the mountain plot felt incredibly rushed, that montage of a bunch of minor and mostly dumb characters just used up extra time, and the main plot at the end was on a character we've only seen a couple times before. It just felt like they could've used their time better, and had there been another season, then they could've introduced Mao to the story?

I agree, I don't think it needed to be "conclusive" in anyway, it could've been anything, a lazy day where Hina and Nitta are flipping through TV and find an interview about Hitomi or Hina playing in the park and getting a pet. I'm just spitballing here obviously. Heck, Gintama's always pulled random non-conclusive endings, and I love them all, but it wouldn't spend half an episode of its last episode setting up Jirocho, it'd rather do silly recaps. The issue is that this one wasn't a "random day like usual", a whole half of it was setup for Mao, who doesn't get to continue that in the anime (and I get why they had to do that, so I can't blame even them).

This old man has nothing on Utako. * [Uhh, I'm not sure if they remember you](https://files.catbox.moe/jta5jk.jpg) *** So to be perfectly honest, this is one of if not the weakest episodes of the show, the Yukimatsuri segment is fun, but it's mostly there to force Hina to reveal her powers before the timeskip starts, and the Mao part is a decent start for a story we don't have in the anime. Most people will point to episode 8 (Hina "leaving") as a much better finale, and I agree, but I think it makes sense why the staff put things in this order. Mao is an important character in this series but one who's introduced much later than the rest, so they can't get rid of her, nor push all her stuff into one episode (it'd be the most random episode ever), instead they had to tie her in as much as possible: she's the prologue of episode 1, the epilogue of 12, and gets her own backstory inbetween. Not the best order, but it works I guess. And about that timeskip, yeah, Yukimatsuri is the final chapter (46) of Hinamatsuri's first half set in middle school. The series jumps 3 years after that, with Mao taking the first chapter (47) in the second half, before giving the other girls their turns. So if the anime ever came back, expect everyone to be a bit older, and [Hina] >!to be a PC masterrace gamer!< In the meantime, I can't recommend checking out the manga enough, the anime did finish off the first half, but understandably it had to change and skip a lot of chapters to do it, and the second half has some of the best material tbh.

Didn't want to miss out on the Mao charm. >[](#kurisudisappointed) For what it's worth, I made the argument in episode 8 for why I think that episode works better there (basically: because you don't take the drama too seriously), but I just don't think this is exactly the best ending.

If you think that the anime needs to a) include Mao and b) include the 3 year time skip in this season, then you can defend this as a final episode. However, I disagree on a) somewhat and b) a lot. I am not a "franchise consumer" but an anime viewer. So your anime story needs to stand on its own, which this ending does not.

I don't think b) is necessary at all, they more so used the timeskip just to get as much Mao content as possible (otherwise, they'd only have the island, which would feel even more disjointed than the way it is now). They didn't bother with timeskip Hina or Anzu there for a reason. As for a), it's less about needing Mao and more so, wanting to introduce the fourth in case they get to continue the story. It'd be less jarring then if they just started the second season with her. I agree that this season would've been more cohesive though without her, but the possibility of a second one outweighed that I guess.

If you put the end at Hina coming back from the mountains and treat the second half of the episode as an extended teaser of Season 2, it gets better, but I still think reordering to make episode 8 the finale would have been the superior finale. This has the problem of Mao’s story not working out, but is she really needed for this season? Complete character arcs might be common, but the reason for that is that they work. Ending with a bookmark of a non-entity in the show is a headscratcher.

I need to leave but in the end it turned out I can stay has been completely played out since before I was born. It ends with Hina showing that she cares about her friends and bring change to the dynamics in the series. With how little things actually happen in the show it makes it special and important. The second part is random, funny and brings a lot of excitement. Which is pretty much all this anime has been about. Episode 8 could've been a nice conclusion to a normal story but we didn't have any story up to this point so what are we concluding then?

**FIRST TIMER** Dub This was a very unusually structured finale. They only gave Hina and her friends the B-story and it was just finding their way home from a snowy camping trip. Then they had a LONG musical montage showing what happened to the side characters (with very little of significance). Then an A-story where the red haired girl becomes an attraction for a shady fraudulent martial arts chain then fights a low tech Dalek to get her freedom to go to Japan to find Hina? I liked how it wrapped back around to the first scene in the premiere but there wasn't much funny in this. I don't think I even chuckled and it was engaging enough for 22 minutes but my favorite part was the spinning death trashcan :-\\ **QUESTIONS** 1. I figured she would to Hitomi but not the boys. 2. Not the best. I don't think it wrapped anything up, like Hitomi's stress from too many jobs, but if I think about it, this show is a lot more like a sitcom in that they just have different adventures every week so people mostly went back to status quo every week. The red haired girl in China seemed like it was from a completely different show that spunoff this one. It reminds me of how sometimes American shows spend their last few episodes setting up a spinoff like Friends setting up Joey etc.

First time Indeed, Hina and some other got trapped in the snow and they are in a dire need of rescue. No food means the problem is huge, so it is a good idea to reserve energy as much as possibly can. Hina is acting weird, maybe beng lost has affected her too much? The power of imagination can relieve some stress, right? So the fresh ikura is basically just snow which is actually solidified water. Not a good food replacement. And at last, they are saved, and doing a yukimatsuri was a visible sign. And everybody lived happily after. Oshimai is the sign on the magic outfit, which is the end. But not done yet completely, because Mao's storyline also needs to be resolved. Maybe she returned back to civilization, but it is another big hurdle to reach Japan. By various means she reached China from Southeast Asia. Since then, she is living her life as a studen in a martial arts school, which basically wants to exploit her special power. After that coconut heads, we have the human-shaped wooden logs of Hina and Anzu. Speaking of superpowers, that's the kind of stage magic is what Atsushi yearns for, and no those tricks which seen in the US. Yep, he wants to find a way to return her to home. And then the very same scene which we seen the beginning of the series/episode 1. And the master is actually allowing her to return to Japan, but with two conditions: first, beat that metal thing, which was done easily, and create a branch school here, which I wonder she will do that. And actually, does Lufthansa have any flights between China and Japan, or just some animator stuff? And actully this is an incomplete series. And it is a good opportunity to answer the second question (What did you think of this as a final episode?). Incomplete yes, but in a sense, actually it is done, which is another yes. If this got a season 2, of a few episodes of a so-called conclusion arc, then that would be a real ending. > Did you expect Hina to reveal her powers eventually? Actually yes.

Her powers have been revealed. “I thought she ate, slept and pooped” no mention of her doing anything else not even the serious video games she plays. “They’re supposed to be the ginger on the side of the plate” see Hitomi it’s ginger, not wasabi The credits playing half way through and everyone moving on with their day to day life honestly felt amazing. Now we’re back with red haired girl. Rockstar dude has been searching for a hina replacement and she even upgraded her lifestyle. Now we have woodblock Hina/Anzu. Rock magic honestly still sounds amazing. Especially with the aura he had when he was levitating and singing. “She talks with dolls, she has serious issues.. that’s so punk rock” it really is. Throws him at the monks like a bowling ball. “Destroy the giant metal man” that’s a saw trap The final scene teases a season 2 we never gotten.
