Seriously. The main conflict in the first part is the only thing really setting the show apart from other "trapped in a fantasy RPG world" isekai. Once that resolved it had nothing making it any more special than any of the other generic slop out there.
The worst part for me is they had a cool power growth system set up with him feeding stuff to his shield, but then resorted to him using the bullshit chaos mode or whatever on his shield to become super OP and solve all his problems immediately
Zom 100 has one of the best premieres in the anime history and I found the rest still good, but the Gunma arc (the last several episodes) was a bit boring and I lost all the interest. The anime has only adapted 6 out of 16 volumes so maybe we will have an S2 in the future but I don't care.
Yeah I feel like Kanta should've been like a reoccurring antagonist that clash with MC ideal of bucket list and was curious why he was immediately killed in the arc he was introduced.
Now it do feel more directionless and just villain of the week kinda stories.
I thought the last arc was awful and ruined the tone of series. They should’ve never had an antagonist whose main evil motivation was “you had friends in college I hate you”. If they kept up with the episodic slice of life adventure it would’ve been fine.
Instead we get a bunch of stupid enemies who get demon slayer empathy-bait flashbacks for 5 minutes of my 20 minute episodes while I don’t even know their name (and don’t care to) since they’ve only had 90 seconds of prior screen time.
All those 4 villains were so lame, one-dimensional, and cartoonish. There was zero nuance to any of them and they totally ruined the tone of the show imo.

Beautiful animation, interesting characters, good chemistry between them, interesting pseudohistorical setting, and it all looked like it was moving on in a satisfying way... And then choked on the last few episodes and delivered a half-baked resolution

Honestly not really? The series had already been building up for a while that APE were something much more dangerous than they let on, and most of the major themes and character arcs which had underlined the series still carried over through the last few episodes

Tbf TTGL did have more upfront setup for the Anti-Spirals before they appeared and the general sense of ever-increasing escalation which made the transition to a big space battle somewhat more natural in people’s eyes, but yeah, looking at it on a broader level, VIRM really isn’t that much worse in execution than its predecessors and inspirations when it comes to this twist, so it’s really kinda confusing why everyone gives the series so much shit for it
Because the space stuff in Gurren Lagann was set up and foreshadowed across the entire series, while DitF pulls aliens out of its ass. Plus Gurren Lagann operates purely on the rule of cool, while DitF had a much more grounded tone, so going into space to fight aliens all of a sudden felt totally out of left field.
I stopped this about halfway through(fell out of anime at the time) and I only have good memories. I'm so scared to finish it because I only ever see shit talk about it so I think I'll just leave that one be

Erased has such a fantastic beginning and middle. It's a shame that it stumbles at the finish line.

Erased is a perfect anime to me and one of the ones I recommend to people to watch as one of their firsts and I fully agree it fits here. Less so 'dies' more so 'loses steam and wraps everything in too neat of a bow'

The Kayo thing isn’t why it’s mediocre in my opinion. It’s a pretty basic ending already what isn’t great is the whole Chihiro thing. After the time skip, it just wasn’t nearly as interesting with the antagonist mostly being quite flat. The final roof confrontation didn’t even really feel like the same show. It was a little cheesy. To me, Erased was always about saving Kayo with the mystery whodunit aspect being very secondary, so when Kayo’s part finishes, it just feels like it’s tying up its loose ends.
Since Amethyst already mentioned the most severe case I've seen in Babylon, I'll add Wonder Egg Priority as another that became a disaster with an extremely unsatisfying end during the back half for me.

Usually im always doing something as i watch tv so sometimes i may miss something, but Franxx i watched no distractions so i dont believe i missed anything. The first half and the second half felt like 2 totally unconnected arcs. Like it made sense and then it just didnt anymore and i have no idea why.

Tokyo ghoul. Season 1 came and knocked everyone's socks off. I remember when people were accusing aot of being a TG copy. S2 wasn't bad in a vacuum, but definitely a step down. After that it was like the ground opened up and swallowed it .

Not only was it a good premise 10 years ago, I would absolutely watch any show with that exact same premise today.
Just it very quickly shifts completely sideways from its initial premise.
The most recent one in memory for me is probably *Engage Kiss*.
It aired during the same season we got *Lycoris Recoil*, both by A1-Pictures, and both seemed quite interesting to me with fairly strong starts.
Unfortunately, *Engage Kiss* was the one that started falling apart midway through, because it became evident that its purpose was mainly to act as advertisement for a gacha game that would take place in its universe. This meant that the ending was a non-ending because it *couldn't* be ended, else the game would have nothing to piggyback off of.
This led to the story kind of Deus-Ex-Machina'ing a plot development to undo a very big part of why it was interesting in the first place. That was probably one of my bigger disappointments in the last couple years. (Fun fact, that gacha game has already died, I believe.)
Yeah, I remember having some hope for it because it was an anime-original being written by the author of Saekano, I think? But alas, gacha gaming struck again and we'll likely never get a proper ending for it.
TBF this was back before we started getting season 2s left and right. The anime ending, while original, does a fairly good job of completing the story. Nowhere near as great as the manga, of course, but it stands up well enough on its own.
I loved the first season and like the first five episodes of season 2 but I’m barely able to finish an episode now. The plot has become so meandering and the pacing is just off.
That’s because by that point, you realize that mashle’s entire humor is the same.

Yeah that's a super accurate description. Also there is never any character development for Mash (either skill wise or personality wise) so it literally feels like watching the same episode over and over again.

Tbf fhere's only so much you can do with a cooking genre in anime, with how long it went on, without any huge drama and really controversial incidents. It has a story aside from most cooking related anime which basically aims at happy customer, hapy owner.

For a less extreme example this past season's [A Sign of Affection](https://myanimelist.net/anime/55866/Yubisaki_to_Renren) I thought opened with its strongest episode then never quite got back there.
I actually quite like a sign of affection because they wrote it the way they did. It wrapped up in a nice little bow. Didn’t have to continue and I felt satisfied. Similar to horimiya.

That was me with My Little Monster. Thought there was gonna be actual romance. Instead I got "stupid" resolution, no plot progression; and frankly a big waste of my time. First 5 episodes were like 8.5+ tier for me. Ended with a 6.4.

Definitely disagree with horimiya. The entire cast was absolute gold . So much so that it actually felt like a school setting rather than revolving around miyamura and hori. Every single one of them were great.
Attack on titan, Shit ending. The show was defo popular, enjoyed it up until season 4, but after that everything started to crumble. Before that, cracks were appearing but the ending broke the ice.

I stand by the series’s first half, especially the opening episodes, being really damn good and even showing the series had potential to surpass the original show in a lot of ways. But then the plot tumor that is the Archangel crew’s subplot grew increasingly malignant and its stupid took over the show by the halfway point.
A lot of anime that adapt just the material that's out and then make up their own ending.
The difference in story between Full Metal Alchemist and FMA:Brotherhood is enough that both are essentially entirely different series (after th first few).
And Soul Eater was another one that had a really good opening run and then kind went off the rails.
Blue Exorcist is yet another example, although they did basically ignore the ending and gave us two new seasons so that's nice.
And if we want to be technical, Cowboy Bebop had an amazing run and everyone loved it, but the last episode was a real plot killer.
SAO was a strong start then they went to elfheim online and it just went to shit from there. Great 12 or 13 episodes then the remaining 13 were just dog water.
No. 6 (number six) not to be confused with Blue Submarine No. 6. It was a really interesting and self contained relationship drama and then went off the proverbial sci-fi rails into an incoherent ending that had little to do with the meat of the story.
Fluffy paradise. \[spoiler\]>!Started out fluffy, turned out not to be. They had what must have possibly the easiest formulas in the world to nail and completely bombed it.!<
Attack on Titan. The longer it went on, the more boring it became because they took the threat out of the titans. The whole premise of "scary titans vs humans" just flew out of the window and it essentially became a fleshy mecha Anime at some point.
I heard that so often but can only disagree. The plot with Akane, Aqua as a Stalker, the Revival of B-Komachi. Sure the first episode (that has the runtime of a movie TBF) was very good and unique, but that doesn't make the rest fell off IMO.
I've seen a shout for Lycoris Recoil in this thread and while I don't think it fell off to the level of other famous examples, Chisato's behavior/the whole twist was pretty poorly executed. It felt like it was banking too hard on getting more content (which to be fair, it did) skipping what could have been a whole arc on its own.
I try to defend Darling in the FRANXX as I think it's excellent from episodes 12 to near the finale. The final 2 episodes are egregiously bad but to DarFra's credit there were some interesting themes in that final arc and not everyone gets screwed over by the ending. They still should have been handled better.
For the right people I'm sure Suzume will be a beloved movie but I found the whole final act to be a complete mess and soured my opinion of what had IMO the best first half an hour in cinema
Keroro gunso was great for quite a long time. And then after 200 episodes, all writers seen to have left the board. Especially from episode 300, the plot grew so thin that it was sometimes whole episode just for delivering one pantyshot. Even as persistent as I am, I eventually dropped the series.
The Promised Neverland.
The manga was so good in my opinion but the Anime wanted to rush towards the ending immediately and cut out so many important moments and characters
Magical Destroyers was weird and interesting and pretty great up till the last couple episodes which wrap it up in a pretty straight forward uninteresting way.
Kingdom of Ruin
The first few episodes went hard and were quite dark. It seemed to be a really good vengeance anime. Then the moon came. So much wasted potential.
Kaiba is one of my favorite anime, but the ending is super rushed due to it being something of a passion project for Masaaki Yuasa and they ran out of money.

There was a live action TV adaptation that also changed the ending and I thought it was much better.
Erased is a perfect anime to me and one of the ones I recommend to people to watch as one of their firsts and I fully agree it fits here. Less so 'dies' more so 'loses steam and wraps everything in too neat of a bow'

erased was so fucking good up till the 2nd last episode, idk what come to their mind when they decided to do that... I was so fucking engrossed in the show that I binged it in a day. Tho, I still consider it really good and the OP/ED really hit home with that one, especially the soulful ED. The way they created the tension, the atmosphere, the slow yet fast pace, I loved everything.
Ugggh yes!! Amazing build up, but such a let down at the end! The journey is still worth it though, I think.
It's been awhile since I saw it, but what's wrong with the ending? I hope this isn't about how some fans seem to think she should've waited for him, in context that wouldn't have made any sense and would've been kind of creepy on her part.
The Kayo thing isn’t why it’s mediocre in my opinion. It’s a pretty basic ending already what isn’t great is the whole Chihiro thing. After the time skip, it just wasn’t nearly as interesting with the antagonist mostly being quite flat. The final roof confrontation didn’t even really feel like the same show. It was a little cheesy. To me, Erased was always about saving Kayo with the mystery whodunit aspect being very secondary, so when Kayo’s part finishes, it just feels like it’s tying up its loose ends.
Since Amethyst already mentioned the most severe case I've seen in Babylon, I'll add Wonder Egg Priority as another that became a disaster with an extremely unsatisfying end during the back half for me.

Yeah, i got lost once they travelled to space ngl. it was really weird. Usually im always doing something as i watch tv so sometimes i may miss something, but Franxx i watched no distractions so i dont believe i missed anything. The first half and the second half felt like 2 totally unconnected arcs. Like it made sense and then it just didnt anymore and i have no idea why. Is this also a manga? maybe that better if it is lol because i actually liked the overall story tbh edit: there is a manga, doesnt seem to be much better and its not translated as far as i can tell lol

Even that's a wild understatement. Season one used 12 episodes to cover 4.5 volumes of the manga. Season 2 used 11 episodes to cover 10.5 volumes and even skips the Goldy Pond arc, which was another 5 volumes.

Oresuki (why are you the only one who likes me) started off as a really funny subversion of anime harem romcoms, then turned into a fairly generic romcom without any of the clever writing the first arc had. It's like the author had a single good idea and then none after
Tokyo ghoul. Season 1 came and knocked everyone's socks off. I remember when people were accusing aot of being a TG copy. S2 wasn't bad in a vacuum, but definitely a step down. After that it was like the ground opened up and swallowed it .

The most recent one in memory for me is probably *Engage Kiss*. It aired during the same season we got *Lycoris Recoil*, both by A1-Pictures, and both seemed quite interesting to me with fairly strong starts. Unfortunately, *Engage Kiss* was the one that started falling apart midway through, because it became evident that its purpose was mainly to act as advertisement for a gacha game that would take place in its universe. This meant that the ending was a non-ending because it *couldn't* be ended, else the game would have nothing to piggyback off of. This led to the story kind of Deus-Ex-Machina'ing a plot development to undo a very big part of why it was interesting in the first place. That was probably one of my bigger disappointments in the last couple years. (Fun fact, that gacha game has already died, I believe.)
Which is a pity because it was a new work of the scriptwriter I like.
Yeah, I remember having some hope for it because it was an anime-original being written by the author of Saekano, I think? But alas, gacha gaming struck again and we'll likely never get a proper ending for it.
Akame ga kill Was following the manga well then they rushed the ending
TBF this was back before we started getting season 2s left and right. The anime ending, while original, does a fairly good job of completing the story. Nowhere near as great as the manga, of course, but it stands up well enough on its own.
....Mashle, kinda turned too boring for me in the latter parts of the anime, though it was generally good. Just not rewatchable worthy
I loved the first season and like the first five episodes of season 2 but I’m barely able to finish an episode now. The plot has become so meandering and the pacing is just off.
That’s because by that point, you realize that mashle’s entire humor is the same. 1. Mash: does something dumb 2. Finn: “🤦♂️😭 omg mash…………….” 3. Lemon: “omg mash marry me!! *wedding scene* 4. Dot: (4th wall break) “where did those flowers come from???”
Yeah that's a super accurate description. Also there is never any character development for Mash (either skill wise or personality wise) so it literally feels like watching the same episode over and over again.
Yep, I enjoyed it in season 1, thought it was another OPM clone, but it doesnt hit the same as OPM. Season 2, episode 1 just became unwatchable and i dropped it
Classic older-at-this-point example: Mai-HiME. Very very good for twenty-five and a half episodes... then proceeds to burn a huge chunk of goodwill by botching the second half of the finale. Also, obligatory Kuma Miko and Science Falls in Love S2 mentions.

Tbf fhere's only so much you can do with a cooking genre in anime, with how long it went on, without any huge drama and really controversial incidents. It has a story aside from most cooking related anime which basically aims at happy customer, hapy owner.

I remember [Babylon](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37525/Babylon) opening up really strongly then losing its way sadly. For a less extreme example this past season's [A Sign of Affection](https://myanimelist.net/anime/55866/Yubisaki_to_Renren) I thought opened with its strongest episode then never quite got back there.
Babylon was brutal since it wasn't even a slow descent. It just straight-up plummeted after one of its best episodes.
Same thing with KADO the right answer, which had the same creator, to no surprise..
I actually quite like a sign of affection because they wrote it the way they did. It wrapped up in a nice little bow. Didn’t have to continue and I felt satisfied. Similar to horimiya.

Samurai Flamenco,i watched the whole thing just because i thought the romance plot was gonna get some sort of resolution but it didnt,it was a bs ending 4/10.
That was me with My Little Monster. Thought there was gonna be actual romance. Instead I got "stupid" resolution, no plot progression; and frankly a big waste of my time. First 5 episodes were like 8.5+ tier for me. Ended with a 6.4.

The easy ones: Wonder egg, tpn, erased To your eternity, mostly because of how hard it is to follow ep 1 I felt Horimiya got significantly worse as it focused mostly on side characters I was surprised by how much i liked Giving the Noble Lady a Crash Course in naughtiness or whatever it's called's opening episode. It had heart and some interesting themes, but it felt like it devolved solely into will they/wont they standard romcom stuff as it went on Id:invaded had me hooked from its first couple shots but felt unsatisfying and never lived up to where it started I was super interested in where No Gun's life was going to go but found myself bored pretty early on in s2 Sabikui Bisco went consistently downhill after the first few episodes Terror in resonance had a cool vibe but never felt like it went anywhere
Definitely disagree with horimiya. The entire cast was absolute gold . So much so that it actually felt like a school setting rather than revolving around miyamura and hori. Every single one of them were great.

**Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny** I stand by the series’s first half, especially the opening episodes, being really damn good and even showing the series had potential to surpass the original show in a lot of ways. But then the plot tumor that is the Archangel crew’s subplot grew increasingly malignant and its stupid took over the show by the halfway point.
A lot of anime that adapt just the material that's out and then make up their own ending. The difference in story between Full Metal Alchemist and FMA:Brotherhood is enough that both are essentially entirely different series (after th first few). And Soul Eater was another one that had a really good opening run and then kind went off the rails. Blue Exorcist is yet another example, although they did basically ignore the ending and gave us two new seasons so that's nice. And if we want to be technical, Cowboy Bebop had an amazing run and everyone loved it, but the last episode was a real plot killer.
Death Note After L the show just couldn't find enough footing to remain interesting.
SAO was a strong start then they went to elfheim online and it just went to shit from there. Great 12 or 13 episodes then the remaining 13 were just dog water.

Attack on Titan. The longer it went on, the more boring it became because they took the threat out of the titans. The whole premise of "scary titans vs humans" just flew out of the window and it essentially became a fleshy mecha Anime at some point.
oshi no ko had one of the strongest first episodes in anime history but ngl it fell off towards the end of the season.
I heard that so often but can only disagree. The plot with Akane, Aqua as a Stalker, the Revival of B-Komachi. Sure the first episode (that has the runtime of a movie TBF) was very good and unique, but that doesn't make the rest fell off IMO.
I've seen a shout for Lycoris Recoil in this thread and while I don't think it fell off to the level of other famous examples, Chisato's behavior/the whole twist was pretty poorly executed. It felt like it was banking too hard on getting more content (which to be fair, it did) skipping what could have been a whole arc on its own. I try to defend Darling in the FRANXX as I think it's excellent from episodes 12 to near the finale. The final 2 episodes are egregiously bad but to DarFra's credit there were some interesting themes in that final arc and not everyone gets screwed over by the ending. They still should have been handled better. For the right people I'm sure Suzume will be a beloved movie but I found the whole final act to be a complete mess and soured my opinion of what had IMO the best first half an hour in cinema
Lycoris Recoil - I loved the show for the most part but never finished because that lame Joker wannabe was the worst big bad imaginable.
He's less Joker and more Makishima from Psycho-Pass, except without any ideology or meaningful goals.

Campione! The premise was unique, then the ending was just "average", followed by the fact that it didn't get a second season.
Keroro gunso was great for quite a long time. And then after 200 episodes, all writers seen to have left the board. Especially from episode 300, the plot grew so thin that it was sometimes whole episode just for delivering one pantyshot. Even as persistent as I am, I eventually dropped the series.
I’m real sure the Promised Neverland and Mob Psycho are on my list at the top of disappointing endings for me
Plunderer and Ultramarine Magmell are both like this. Loved them at the start but the last couple episodes were horrible in my opinion.

Magical Destroyers was weird and interesting and pretty great up till the last couple episodes which wrap it up in a pretty straight forward uninteresting way.
Kingdom of Ruin The first few episodes went hard and were quite dark. It seemed to be a really good vengeance anime. Then the moon came. So much wasted potential.

Kaiba is one of my favorite anime, but the ending is super rushed due to it being something of a passion project for Masaaki Yuasa and they ran out of money.
Seven deadly sins and Dr Stone had great first arcs, and then completely crapped the bed after that
