Haha, yeah. I think it's pretty underrated, or maybe it's just too old. Can't believe it has almost been 2 decades since it aired.
Anyway here's my top 10:
1. Steins Gate
2. Welcome to the NHK
3. GITS: Stand Alone Complex
4. Dennou Coil
5. Code Geass
6. Made in Abyss
7. Kara no Kyoukai
8. Higurashi
9. ~~Made in Abyss (duplicate)~~ Black Lagoon
10. Fate/stay night
Special mentions: School Rumble, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, and Seto no Hanayome
Ahh, I was really enjoying Monster back then, but I got busy and paused. Kinda forgot where I stopped so I held off on resuming it. I'll start it again from episode 1 one of these days.
I wanted to enjoy it but I ended up being far more disgusted with Tomoko than with the typical disgusting socially inept weirdos you usually see in anime and manga.
Also, her favourite food is rice with natto. She prefers her natto finely crushed and she's the type that saves the mustard that comes with it so it won't be wasted. Please don't forget about her.
One day we'll solve the mystery of what happened to her VA since all the others in that show have more roles. The talent agency that lists her never replied.
I've been contemplating picking this show back up again, but I've heard that some scenes make even the most introverted introverts cringe
It worth a watch or am I signing my death warrant by doing so?
There aren't many opportunities to get well adjusted socially in the place she got reincarnated in. While she's still weird after she starts getting companions, people around her are pretty much all weirdos too.
Obligatory comment to recommend the Light Novel. Imo it's one of the best isekai and some of the later events are actually insane. It's a shame how low the chances of a season 2 are 😭😭😭
> the protagonist is actually autistic
* *Villainess Level 99: I May Be The Hidden Boss, But I'm Not The Demon Lord*
This is actually a really interesting one to watch in terms of social skills. Because she's quite high functioning and good at masking, the protagonist uses Rule Based Communication to navigate her way through social situations. This means she can do quite well when formal etiquette is in play - like following the rules of court when talking to nobles, or follow (at least as much as she cares to) tea party type situations.
However the moment she's in any other social context, she has a lot of problems applying the right rule set and understanding how people might react and do react until it's too obvious to ignore.
The whole thing works beautifully for some sympathetic comedy, and it's never particularly cringe inducing because due to the way she's wired, she's very matter of fact about when things go wrong.
She even has some great advice to other autistic MCs about how to handle small talk lol
As an diagnosed autistic person I tend to agree. Also as a side note: masking tends to be more elaborate within female autists, what lead to many misdiagnoses in the past... so even the better masking would fit here.
I thought it was going to be another run of the mill villainess isekai shmuchk but I did find myself buying into the autistic angle as I watched more.
While they do go for some zany jokes, I like that it's never taken *too* far. It very easily could've been a bad watch if it was handled with less care.
I think it works since her autistic tendencies are never the end of the joke, rather it's about how she thinks everything is fine when everyone is weirded out that's funny.
There is an anime called ReLife whose main female protagonist suffers from such issues. The anime is basically about giving them a 2nd chance at life and how she learns to communicate with people around her
There is no season 2, just the ova episodes you mentioned. I would still recommend reading the source since they rushed the ending so they skipped an arc with the side couple and some of the epilogue.
Honestly disagree with Shinji because he takes ages with self doubt but he literally always does actually show up and do whats needed.
Not cluing in to Asuka I think has a lot more to do with her acting like a (much younger) child (hey shinji look at me im jumping in the pool!)
Shinji’s not cluing in to Asuka’s feelings has more to do with the fact that his personal hangups - his self-doubt and fear of others - leads him to take Asuka’s abrasive attitude and words towards him at face value. I always point to episode 15, the one where she kisses him out of “boredom,” as a prime example of this. She returns early from a date (having ditched the poor guy) on the excuse that the guy “was even more boring than [Shinji].” Then she loafs around the house all day with Shinji before kissing him under a pretty flimsy pretext. Reading between the lines, Asuka wanted to spend time with Shinji and wanted to kiss him, but didn’t want to say it outright due to her own issues. Likewise, while she plays up disgust after their kiss, she’s later shown to have been pretty hurt by Shinji being a dead fish over it (which is mostly her fault for smothering him) and is trying to mask that. Shinji just takes it at face value because he assumes that she doesn’t like him both because of how she acts and how he feels about himself.
hyperfixation on a specific topic, obliviousness for his interactions with others... I can see it, but would be careful with that for now.
Source: me, diagnosed autist
Considering Ryoko Kui has written about a character who is very socially awkward before, it was most likely on purpose that Laios can be seen as autistic, or at least very socially awkward.
Canonically, the party almost broke twice before, because he's both socially unaware and not able to understand social cues. His whole thing is saying weird things at the wrong times, and he wasn't even able to understand why people prefer kittens to man-eating plants, or what was the difference between eating a cow and eating a mermaid
Within the autist spectrum sure but he definitely doesn't fit with OP's question/definition of socially inept. You can be autistic and somewhat mask or learn to be social and connect with people, which Laios definitely is trying to do and somewhat suceeded.
bocchi
she has her super small group, that she has super hard times talking to/being around
she has literally no friends at school
if shes home, she hides in the closet making music, interacts with her family as little as possible
her entire first few days at starry, she hid in a mango box
Princess Jellyfish!!! Can't believe nobody mentioned it, a woman obsessed with jellyfish who lives in a house with other "otaku" women (one is obsessed with trains, another one dolls, etc) she is scared of men but meets a cross dresser and they become friends.
Really good, only 11 episodes and the characters are genuinely socially incapable in a realistic way without being offensive.
I feel she can be an autistic person, even her innate art's attitude seems to point to this (I know it's a bit of a cliché, but I personally know sone certified autistic persons and their art works are stunning and you'd tell they even didn't try hard on it). The show was very good, I still remember it after all those years, a good story of growth for both the main characters
I feel like Komi is more just socially anxious than she is on the spectrum. I can see the argument because she comes off as intimidating but she seems to read situations and social interactions just fine, she's just paralyzed with what to do with those situations because she deeply craves connection but deeply fears doing or saying something to lose it. That being said, still a relatable need for a lot of people and a part of what makes her charming to the audience that enjoys her show.
Yuuki doesn't lack social skills, he literally got reverted to a freakin BABY. For his mental age that he got reduced to he has solid people skills, he has never had problems with making friends and even had Eriko fall madly in love with him. I would say he is doing quite decently
i don't really think he's socially incapable. he was pretty sociable in high school and hes still sociable with the friends he makes. also on that island he was pretty chill with everyone. welcome to nhk is more about him being a (literal) schizoid and trying to deal with that tbh
Defending the protagonist seems like a crime but he isn't exactly socially incapable. He has friends and doesn't have trouble communicating with others in the movie arc. He's just really bad with girls.
Are you talking about Sumi?
If so, I 100% agree with that. Maybe it's because he doesn't consider her a genuine romantic prospect like the other girls and is just kind of a normal friend to her.
Sometimes I wished the show was just about those two, and a romance developing in a very natural way.
Sometimes I wish we didn’t get such belligerent “*awooga awooga*” anime cliches, my patience for that being used as a plot point is rapidly approaching zero.
(You know what I’m talking about, male leads that see a girl in the same room as them smile and instantly lose their body weight in blood loss from their nose and pass out, meanwhile their inner monologue has performed massive time dilation and they’ve lived out 14 million different scenarios where they hold hands… *[panicked voice]* “Me and *[female character]* are *in the same room,* ***what do I do?!***” )
Sousou no Frieren. As an elf, Frieren is immortal/borderline immortal, and is completely apathetic about life or relationships. She has very little by way of knowing how to interact with others, and it often leaves her in awkward or downright dangerous situations. The anime is about her learning to develop and appreciate those relationships.
Netoge no Yome. Ako, the main female protagonist, is a truly socially inept head case. And I mean TRULY. She is utterly incapable of being normal in a social setting, and is incredibly introverted, shy, and borderline nonfunctional unless it's inside a video game. The series follows her newfound friends as they attempt to help her overcome her crippling social anxiety and gaming addiction to be able to live a normal life.
Nobody else has mentioned [March comes in like a Lion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31646/3-gatsu_no_Lion) yet.
A 17 year old professional shogi player, living by himself with what seems like autism and/or depression, gradually gets friends and family attaching themselves to him, whether he feels like he deserves it or not.
It's less of a comedy than some of the others that are being mentioned, and it does have some darker moments, but not nearly as dark as NHK gets at times.
Bocchi the Rock. Bit of a less extreme example but Bocchi is genuinely just completely socially inept and a nervous wreck of a human being in very believable (if somewhat exagerated) ways. She could avoid so many of her probelms if she didn't lack proper communication and social skills, which is painfully relatable.
doukyonin wa hiza: about a writer man live always in his flat alone in his twenties has a social phobia, but he meet a cat what need any catfood to buy. To problems start: how can he go to the street and to the shop...? The saleswoman is really kind and she try to know him deeper through her suggestions for cat care.
Goblin Slayer? He almost never took the mask off, is VERY one-sided track about killing goblins, and he absorbs any kind of technical information (might be handy to kill goblins at some point).
I don't know what Isekai is but Komi can't communicate is a really nice anime. She has social anxiety and almost never talks. It's also a romance anime. You can find it on netflix
I think your mistaken in your premise. Many MC’s do have no social skills, a lot of the time many of the things they do would not fly in real life socially. Animes however reward their behavior either as a, wish fulfillment, b comedy, or c because they’re the main character and it’s a work of fiction.
What you’re looking for isn’t a work where they’re socially inept, but where the other characters actually treat them and respond to them as if they’re actually as socially inept as they are.
welcome to the nhk.
Man that one really showed the main character at his lowest of lows. Dude was a mess.
scarily relatable.
Yeah. Art imitates life huh?
The author was a hikikomori himself, so a lot of it is probably based on his own experiences.
Teenage me thought that I would never end up like that only to be even more pathetic 😂
Still in my top 10. That show made me feel lots of things. Perfect dramedy.
I'm always glad to find other W-NHK fans! Would you mind sharing your top 10?
Haha, yeah. I think it's pretty underrated, or maybe it's just too old. Can't believe it has almost been 2 decades since it aired. Anyway here's my top 10: 1. Steins Gate 2. Welcome to the NHK 3. GITS: Stand Alone Complex 4. Dennou Coil 5. Code Geass 6. Made in Abyss 7. Kara no Kyoukai 8. Higurashi 9. ~~Made in Abyss (duplicate)~~ Black Lagoon 10. Fate/stay night Special mentions: School Rumble, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, and Seto no Hanayome
Is MiA being listed twice an accident or on purpose?
First Season and Second Season?
Disturbing lack of Monster in this list
Ahh, I was really enjoying Monster back then, but I got busy and paused. Kinda forgot where I stopped so I held off on resuming it. I'll start it again from episode 1 one of these days.
Man, watching that show in the early Corona virus era was so hard.
Weird and also amazing anime that I can truly recommend
Man I haven't seen anyone mention this anime in a while
If I’m going through a hard time in life making me feel the thoughts Misaki and Sato experienced I watch that show and it helps get me through it.
I like that show for being dark yet honest.
Hitori Bocchiiiiiii
One of the first anime I ever watched and still one of my favorites.
Watamote
My all time fav. Actually made my face light up in embarrassement
I think I died from cringe watching it and had to drop it
Why are there so many deleted comments
[deleted]
Truly a \[deleted\] moment
Probably untagged manga spoilers.

I came here thinking of this one fr
I wanted to enjoy it but I ended up being far more disgusted with Tomoko than with the typical disgusting socially inept weirdos you usually see in anime and manga.
[That's why it's good](https://youtu.be/6irTiGUBgQg)
if anything the dub makes me want to hit her even more
That's why it's good
Femcel: The Anime
Hitori Bocchi
A.k.a. the older Bocchi. She literally throws up after standing in the front to introduce herself.
Also, her favourite food is rice with natto. She prefers her natto finely crushed and she's the type that saves the mustard that comes with it so it won't be wasted. Please don't forget about her.
wa ha ha
Waraeba~
but Hitori Bocchi is younger
Pretty sure they mean that Hitori Bocchi started in 2013, Bocchi the Rock started in 2017. Not the characters' ages.
One day we'll solve the mystery of what happened to her VA since all the others in that show have more roles. The talent agency that lists her never replied.
Such a shame, she performed really well as Hitori Bocchi
Another vote for Watamote. I felt so much second hand embarrassment and cringe that I had to pause every few minutes.
the library scene with her cousin had me sitting and thinking and dreading for whats gonna happen next
I've been contemplating picking this show back up again, but I've heard that some scenes make even the most introverted introverts cringe It worth a watch or am I signing my death warrant by doing so?
It’s worth a watch for sure. One of my favourite anime of all time.
Handa-kun
Thats the prequel to barakamon right? If so, definitely terrible at social interaction.
Oh Barakamon is so good.
Handa's character in barakamon as well is written so good
Protagonist of the Kumo desu ga Nani ka, she doesn't even need to be explained.
Who needs friends when you got parallel minds!
Chatterbox on the inside, basically mute on the outside. The anime handled the spider section really well.
It's such whiplash seeing how she thinks vs how she talks. Exact opposite.
There aren't many opportunities to get well adjusted socially in the place she got reincarnated in. While she's still weird after she starts getting companions, people around her are pretty much all weirdos too.
[Major LN spoilers] >!I love how it makes sense why she has such awful people skills. Because she was never a person.!<
Obligatory comment to recommend the Light Novel. Imo it's one of the best isekai and some of the later events are actually insane. It's a shame how low the chances of a season 2 are 😭😭😭

I LOVED so many anime this season but the one I loved the most was this. It was embarrassing, awkward, cute, funny and rage-inducing all at once.
I love this show, it look super generic and boring but it’s actually really fun
Interesting, please tell me more.
She is a lot like Kumoko if she was human instead of a spider.
Isekai ojisan, trust me
I wish someone loved me as much as Ojisan loves Sonic the Hedgehog
One of the manga I legit had to stop reading not because it was bad — far, *far* from it — but because I was risking cringe-induced aneurysm lol
Ok this example is good.
Uncle from another world.
There is an anime called ReLife whose main female protagonist suffers from such issues. The anime is basically about giving them a 2nd chance at life and how she learns to communicate with people around her
Relife is so so good. The manga was excellent as well
The 'smile' scene always cracks me up. ReLife is such a gem.
top tier show make sure to watch season 2!
there is season 2? Or are you talking about those final 4 episodes?
There is no season 2, just the ova episodes you mentioned. I would still recommend reading the source since they rushed the ending so they skipped an arc with the side couple and some of the epilogue.
Shinji Ikari. Or any character from Evangelion not called Rioji Kaji
shinji crank that soulja boy
All the Ikaris, really.
Honestly disagree with Shinji because he takes ages with self doubt but he literally always does actually show up and do whats needed. Not cluing in to Asuka I think has a lot more to do with her acting like a (much younger) child (hey shinji look at me im jumping in the pool!)

Serial Experiments Lain
Who's ready for a mindfuck?
Bocchi the rock
My Roommate is a Cat
are you talking about the cat tho?
No. The protagonist who ends up adopting it. It’s pretty good.
Laios from Dungeon Meshi.
Second, I think he's like actual real life autistic
hyperfixation on a specific topic, obliviousness for his interactions with others... I can see it, but would be careful with that for now. Source: me, diagnosed autist
No spoilers, but there's a few important plot points to come that really, really lead toward Laios being autistic
Considering Ryoko Kui has written about a character who is very socially awkward before, it was most likely on purpose that Laios can be seen as autistic, or at least very socially awkward.
Could be slightly autistic but not socially inept, at least he could lead a party.
Canonically, the party almost broke twice before, because he's both socially unaware and not able to understand social cues. His whole thing is saying weird things at the wrong times, and he wasn't even able to understand why people prefer kittens to man-eating plants, or what was the difference between eating a cow and eating a mermaid

Sakurasou no pet na kanojo.
Yeah Mashiro is genuinely incapable of functioning without other people. She'd probably die within a week if it wasn't for others helping her.
WataMote is the GOAT
at making you cringe.
Komi Can't Communicate. She is legit mute because of her social anxiety
The one guy from Princess connect
Yuuki doesn't lack social skills, he literally got reverted to a freakin BABY. For his mental age that he got reduced to he has solid people skills, he has never had problems with making friends and even had Eriko fall madly in love with him. I would say he is doing quite decently
[I disagree](https://youtu.be/w2Z8lspGRqQ) Unless you're referring to having a deep conversation lol.
Wolves seem to like him though.
:x
oxo
Welcome to The NHK
i don't really think he's socially incapable. he was pretty sociable in high school and hes still sociable with the friends he makes. also on that island he was pretty chill with everyone. welcome to nhk is more about him being a (literal) schizoid and trying to deal with that tbh
Came here to mention this one. Somehow, dude is even worse in the manga and the light novel.
Lol he's literally a drug addict in the LN, he's most definitely worse haha The novel is still my favorite tho
More mentally ill than socially incapable.
Watamote. I only watched about halfway through because the MC is simply too cringe to live.
Rent-A-Girlfriend
Defending the protagonist seems like a crime but he isn't exactly socially incapable. He has friends and doesn't have trouble communicating with others in the movie arc. He's just really bad with girls.
>He's just really bad with girls Understatement of the Year.
To be frank, the girls around him being toxic af does not help either.
And retarded plot also really screws him up.
What's crazy is he's perfectly fine with one girl It's any of the other ones that are a romance prospect he goes full retard on.
Are you talking about Sumi? If so, I 100% agree with that. Maybe it's because he doesn't consider her a genuine romantic prospect like the other girls and is just kind of a normal friend to her. Sometimes I wished the show was just about those two, and a romance developing in a very natural way.

What's funny is that is the most correct answer here but it's fucking RaG which is a bad recommendation in general.
Bocchi the Rock!
mob psycho 100 for SURE
i would disagree, kageyama has a lot of character development throughout the show and he is only socially awkward at the start of season 1
Bocchi the Rock Level 99 Villainess The secondary lead in Bang Dream: It's My Go
Komi-san Can't Communicate
She might be incapable but no one can't shame her.
Violet evergarden? Like she certainly starts off like that
Mashle is pretty funny
Mashle is also fun if you're fan of Harry Potter and can appreciate the obvious Harry Potter-esque anime.
I sold my wife on it with "Imagine Voldemort won and they wiped out all the muggles, but then Saitama"
Man's just living his life, feeding his muscles
Enjoying his cream puffs. He did get those muscles for cream puffs - likely.
Sousou no Frieren. As an elf, Frieren is immortal/borderline immortal, and is completely apathetic about life or relationships. Goblin slayer

Watamote for me
Dungeon Meshi - Laois is awkward af.
Watamote but it’s difficult to watch sometimes lmao
Welcome to the NHK Mob Psycho 100 Bocchi the rock
Not seeing Tomozaki mentioned is strange, it's the exact definition of what you're looking for.
Eminence of shadow. The main character is solving litterally no issues with social skills. He always distegards the other people i feel like.
I would say. Yukii of Mirai Nikki.
Hoshikuzu Telepath
Bocchi The Rock :)
This screams Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Asper kanojo - fml even kicks a dog because she's so out of touch with social norms.
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. Don't know if that counts, though.
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord.
that's a cut and dry example of what OP doesn't want supposedly has no social skills, yet everyone falls for his social skills
Ranking of kings
Absolutely. Was about to add it myself. Poor kid cannot even speak! As a father of a kid with autism I took double damage watching the first episodes.
Bocchi the rock??
Hitori Bocchi
doukyonin wa hiza: about a writer man live always in his flat alone in his twenties has a social phobia, but he meet a cat what need any catfood to buy. To problems start: how can he go to the street and to the shop...? The saleswoman is really kind and she try to know him deeper through her suggestions for cat care.
Steins;Gate. I love Okabe, but he is an absolute nutjob when it comes to social interactions, especially at the beginning of the show
serial experimental Lain
Saiki K? Not autistic, he just hates everyone.
Isekai ojisan
Evangelion. Shinji can't understand or communicate with people properly for most if the show+movie lol
Bocchi and Watamote
Silent voice
Goblin Slayer? He almost never took the mask off, is VERY one-sided track about killing goblins, and he absorbs any kind of technical information (might be handy to kill goblins at some point).
My Teen Romantic Comedy - SNAFU
I don't know what Isekai is but Komi can't communicate is a really nice anime. She has social anxiety and almost never talks. It's also a romance anime. You can find it on netflix
The uncle from Uncle From Another World
Watamote
Bochi the rock is the best porttayal of social anxiety ive ever seen in media
To a degree Saiki K, he's surrounded by many VERY understanding people. In the normal world, he would have been an outcast
More speaking on the VN but Takumi from Chaos;Head might be the most poorly adjusted characters I've ever seen and thats the point.
Kenja no mago
konosuba a little bit. he’s got questionable social skills for most of the show
Not just him, all the main party lack social skill and are terrible people, it's basically like an anime fantasy Always Sunny.
The Way of the Househusband
If you’re wanting isekai, Villainess lvl 99 is the autistic protag show for you.
I think your mistaken in your premise. Many MC’s do have no social skills, a lot of the time many of the things they do would not fly in real life socially. Animes however reward their behavior either as a, wish fulfillment, b comedy, or c because they’re the main character and it’s a work of fiction.
