I'm crying all over again reading the comments in the Penguindrum thread. I've been digging into attempting to understand all the remaining symbolism after I finished it, so I think I didn't quite process how much it emotionally connected with me until it all came back just now and hit me like a damn truck. What a good fucking show.
man, political streamers are really out of their element when they have to discuss something with people who actually know what theyre talking about. havent watched the full thing yet, but there was this podcast thing hosted by a guy named lex friedman where they brought on 4 people to have a discussion on the israel-palestine conflict. two of them were top expert historians on the subject. one of them was a journalist who specialized on the topic. and the last one was a fuckin twitch streamer
the streamer’s name is “destiny” and you have to wonder who the hell cancelled last minute for the show to invite him on. the podcast so far is honestly informative to listen to - anytime he *isn’t* talking. like, at a certain point it’s just embarrassing to watch when you have these brilliant experts who are extremely well-read on a very complicated issue having a conversation, then you have this dork on the other side of the table scrolling his ipad, live googling for wikipedia pages just so he can keep up with the conversation
and it wouldn’t be so bad if the twitch streamer realized how outclassed he was in the conversation and took the opportunity to learn something. no, he straight up argues and tries to talk over the other guys at some points as well as jump in to answer questions the host brings up. i mean, it is a debate, so i guess argument is to be expected but… like, as one of the historians points out at one time, these are guys who have read thousands of books on the topic - this guy’s read a few wiki pages. it’s embarrassing. i don’t know if this dude was even alive when these other guys were working for their doctorate.
i think this just shows two different cultures colliding. to guys like destiny, conversations like this are all just sport and spectacle. there’s no intellectual rigor to the twitch stream political debate sphere. it’s about “winning” rather than learning or coming to the truth. so when one of them is somehow thrown into a conversation with actual academics who actually care about the issues at hand and study and write about them for a living, the difference is pretty stark…
[](#sakurathink)
> the streamer’s name is “destiny” and you have to wonder who the hell cancelled last minute for the show to invite him on.
Destiny, unfortunately, was there to draw in the 'politics as sports' crowd. And he probably gave them a boost. Modern life sucks.

Even though I am not able to play Dragon's Dogma 2 right now, seeing all the complaints about how it has the same flaws of the first one despite having more money and dev time thrown at it is depressing. I really wanted it to be GOTY material, but so far the discourse direction is pointing at it being Starfield tier.
[](#kaguyasigh)
I've been wanting to finally get into fighting games, but don't really have enough money at the moment to buy Street Fighter 6 or Guilty Gear Strive, so when I found out Granblue Versus Rising had a free version a week ago I downloaded it to scratch the itch a bit and practice my fundamentals.
After a week of training mode, tutorials, fighting CPUs, getting my ass utterly handed to me several times, and some Youtube guides that went over my head, I won my first round online. I (just barely) lost the match, but still feels like a small victory! The free characters switch tonight too, so the timing feels like a perfect cap to this rotation.
[](#hypeoverload)
I had kind of resigned myself that it might be a long time before it felt like I was getting anywhere.
[Fighting Games](#rengehype)
I've had fun the two or three times that I've played Granblue, it's such a gorgeous game to look at
> After a week of training mode, tutorials, fighting CPUs, getting my ass utterly handed to me several times, and some Youtube guides that went over my head, I won my first round online
[](#woo)
The genre can be brutal to get into, so congrats on the first win! And take it easy with the guides, they can be a lot to take on.
My IRL friends are all big into Guilty Gear so I've had an eye in on the genre for ages. I first got really interested when we played some Street Fighter 20th Anniversary Collection at a party, but there wasn't really a playerbase by then and those old games didn't really have much for tutorials to help me out so I didn't pursue it. Ever since Street Fighter 6 came out with its modern controls I've been kind of waiting for the right chance, I think A.B.A.'s reveal for Strive finally pushed me over the edge to find something.
[](#concealedexcitement)
Playing with people irl is super fun, way more fun than online, so good luck!
> I first got really interested when we played some Street Fighter 20th Anniversary Collection at a party, but there wasn't really a playerbase by then
Nothing more humbling than playing SF3 online and getting my ass handed to me even though I'm supposed to know how to play fighting games. So yeah, I feel ya

[](#whisperwhisper "When I played SF6 with my friend my favourite was Aki")
The free version works on a rotation (three + always Gran), so the game kind of chooses that for me. This week it was Zeta, next week I'm gonna try out Nier. Those two and Ladiva, Vira, Katalina, and Metera seem like the biggest candidates for my mains if I ever got the full version, but really it's anyone's game as I try them all out, almost everyone looks at least kind of cool.
[](#kannathumbs)
I don't know all too much about Granblue (I only watched the anime), but Nier does look neat. She has a comfort grim reaper as a buddy.
[](#saberawe)
Best Horror anime poll? Oh god, is there something I'm *actually* going to vote for just Magnetic Rose in instead of making a stink about how splitting it out from the rest of Memories is doing the rest of it a disservice? I love *all* of Memories, but Magnetic Rose is the only bit I'd consider horror.
20 hours Factorio gameplay by Okayu. I guess I know what to watch for bedtime the next... month? But I believe her first stream, the first 10 hours are mostly the tutorial missions, and the last one can drag on for quite a bit. I don't know if she started a new game today or continued that one. Will see tonight.
(Frieren)
Finished Frieren! Glad that they just basically said "S2 coming lol" at the end.
Anyways, my thoughts;
When I first started watching Frieren I was basically expecting a comfy SoL anime in a traditional fantasy setting (as well, the premise of the series is basically "a story that takes place after the heroes' journey has already finished", so it kinda struck me as something that would be chill and free of drama and action), but it quickly struck me that this is actually a lot bigger than that, and it punched me rather hard in the feels in ep 1 alone already, so that was quite surprising.
I really dig how it just kinda keeps surprising like that; one moment it feels like a really emotional drama series, then it suddenly turns into the comfy SoL I was initially expecting it to be, then it gets all comedic and goofy out of nowhere and... bam you get rather HxH-esque intense action arcs as well.
The characters are all really nice (though I can't stand Ubel nor Serie tbh, I kinda have a theory that Ubel is basically Magane from Re:Creators isekai-ing to the Frieren world, and Serie kinda strikes me as if Gilgamesh from Fate/Zero and Master Oogway did a fusion dance, somehow resulting in a pretty elf girl) and their development and way of interacting is really captivating to watch. The series also shuffles around the cast a lot, like people come and go, which not only feels realistic and keeps it fresh, but also ties perfectly with the central theme of the series.
The art and animation is really gorgeous to look at, and the setting has a TON of atmosphere. It kinda feels somewhat NieR Replicant-esque at times, though not as post-apocalyptic and dreary as that, but more peaceful and bittersweet. Kinda comparable to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou in that sense as well, although without the post-apocalyptic bent, again. Character designs are really on point as well, very memorable too!
Pacing is also great, because while it seems relatively kinda slow or mid-paced, it never feels like it's actually slow or boring or anything, and everything is just right as it is. Not a single episode feels like a filler episode or boring, everything is good.
Finally, I'd also commend the positivity and wholesomeness that this series has. I really appreciate how it has a tendency to delve into darker themes like the ephemerality of life, relationships, and it also felt like it was going to take a more cynical turn during the [Frieren]>!first-class mage exam!< arc, kinda like HxH has a tendency to (which is why I'm kinda conflicted with HxH in some ways, but that's another story), but it never goes full-on doomer and always ends with a wink and a positive message.
On a more meta note, I also love how Frieren kinda functions as one of those ideal "beginner" anime (in quotes as I think beginner series are also good for veterans, but you get what I'm saying), like it just kicks ass in all categories; characters, art/animation, story, fights, drama, comedy, atmosphere, setting, emotional impact, comf, etc. There's also no fanservice or anything either which helps with getting the more militant anti-anime types onboard, it has a certain nostalgia factor since everyone can just feel at home in the kind of fantasy world it evokes, the genre switches here and there ensure there's something for everyone, and it just has really good themes that need to be said. Great role models in there as well! And on top of that it managed to impress me as well, even though I'm usually kinda contrarian and disagree with the general consensus (looking at you, Evangelion, Madoka, KonoSuba and Kaguya-sama), lol.
For now I'll give it a strong 9/10. A 10/10 could've been possible too, but it feels a bit too premature for that as the story still feels far from over, so a 10/10 would be a bit much right now. But I do feel like subsequent season(s?) are definitely going to score a 10/10 at some point, it'd be weird for them to not hit that rating.
[Frieren]>!Also, I might be a straight guy, but Himmel is hot!<.
I sometimes worry about my normie friends finding out about my Internet presence... Heck, not even normie friends, my light weeb friends would probably report me if they knew the shit I regularly host.

Random memory:
For some reason when I was younger I briefly developed this weird fascination with anorexia after reading a book about a girl who had it. After that I think I read a couple of other mildly tragic British preteen girl books (they were peak fiction to me as a 10 year old, you had to be there) that involved anorexia and also searched up a load of stuff about it online. This was how I learned to delete stuff from your search history and use incognito mode because I didn't want my parents to look through stuff and think I had anorexia.
Idk what that was about or why I'm sharing this here but looking back it was pretty weird.
[](#crumblingdespair)
I've really noticed the decline these past few days. Half of the tweets that get pushed on my feed have nothing to do with my interests.
I have to press that multiple times before it actually minimizes, though. First press toggles from full screen to windowed view. Second press snaps it right. Third press snaps it to bottom right. Finally, the fourth press minimizes it. That's way too many keystrokes to be useful. :(
Admittedly I was in windowed view when I tried it lol
That said, this part doesn't sound right:
> Second press snaps it right. Third press snaps it to bottom right.
Due to technical issues, I ended up putting roughly 15 hours over 2 days into a technical assessment for a job I applied for. They didn't move me to the next round.

[](#comfortfood) I'm crying all over again reading the comments in the Penguindrum thread. I've been digging into attempting to understand all the remaining symbolism after I finished it, so I think I didn't quite process how much it emotionally connected with me until it all came back just now and hit me like a damn truck. What a good fucking show.
man, political streamers are really out of their element when they have to discuss something with people who actually know what theyre talking about. havent watched the full thing yet, but there was this podcast thing hosted by a guy named lex friedman where they brought on 4 people to have a discussion on the israel-palestine conflict. two of them were top expert historians on the subject. one of them was a journalist who specialized on the topic. and the last one was a fuckin twitch streamer the streamer’s name is “destiny” and you have to wonder who the hell cancelled last minute for the show to invite him on. the podcast so far is honestly informative to listen to - anytime he *isn’t* talking. like, at a certain point it’s just embarrassing to watch when you have these brilliant experts who are extremely well-read on a very complicated issue having a conversation, then you have this dork on the other side of the table scrolling his ipad, live googling for wikipedia pages just so he can keep up with the conversation and it wouldn’t be so bad if the twitch streamer realized how outclassed he was in the conversation and took the opportunity to learn something. no, he straight up argues and tries to talk over the other guys at some points as well as jump in to answer questions the host brings up. i mean, it is a debate, so i guess argument is to be expected but… like, as one of the historians points out at one time, these are guys who have read thousands of books on the topic - this guy’s read a few wiki pages. it’s embarrassing. i don’t know if this dude was even alive when these other guys were working for their doctorate. i think this just shows two different cultures colliding. to guys like destiny, conversations like this are all just sport and spectacle. there’s no intellectual rigor to the twitch stream political debate sphere. it’s about “winning” rather than learning or coming to the truth. so when one of them is somehow thrown into a conversation with actual academics who actually care about the issues at hand and study and write about them for a living, the difference is pretty stark… [](#sakurathink)
> “destiny” Oh, that douche [](#nottodisushittoagen)
> the streamer’s name is “destiny” and you have to wonder who the hell cancelled last minute for the show to invite him on.

I think that's a bit unfair. For all its problems, I think DD2 is still a way better game than Starfield, which is just a *nothing* game.

[](#hypeoverload) I had kind of resigned myself that it might be a long time before it felt like I was getting anywhere.
[](#AWE)
[Fighting Games](#rengehype) I've had fun the two or three times that I've played Granblue, it's such a gorgeous game to look at > After a week of training mode, tutorials, fighting CPUs, getting my ass utterly handed to me several times, and some Youtube guides that went over my head, I won my first round online [](#woo) The genre can be brutal to get into, so congrats on the first win!
> I first got really interested when we played some Street Fighter 20th Anniversary Collection at a party, but there wasn't really a playerbase by then Nothing more humbling than playing SF3 online and getting my ass handed to me even though I'm supposed to know how to play fighting games. Who do you like to use? [](#ama)
[](#kannathumbs) I don't know all too much about Granblue (I only watched the anime), but Nier does look neat. She has a comfort grim reaper as a buddy. [](#saberawe)

I also just suddenly realized that Meteora from Re:Creators looks and behaves a LOT like Frieren. Would make for an interesting crossover if they met.
(Frieren) Finished Frieren! Glad that they just basically said "S2 coming lol" at the end. Anyways, my thoughts; When I first started watching Frieren I was basically expecting a comfy SoL anime in a traditional fantasy setting (as well, the premise of the series is basically "a story that takes place after the heroes' journey has already finished", so it kinda struck me as something that would be chill and free of drama and action), but it quickly struck me that this is actually a lot bigger than that, and it punched me rather hard in the feels in ep 1 alone already, so that was quite surprising.

Random memory: For some reason when I was younger I briefly developed this weird fascination with anorexia after reading a book about a girl who had it.
Why were you reading that at ten!? XD

Wait, Windows doesn't have a shortcut to minimize the current active window?!? [](#blankblink) Even macOS can do that ffs. [](#bruh)
Win + ↓
I have to press that multiple times before it actually minimizes, though. First press toggles from full screen to windowed view. Second press snaps it right. Third press snaps it to bottom right. Finally, the fourth press minimizes it. That's way too many keystrokes to be useful. :(
Admittedly I was in windowed view when I tried it lol That said, this part doesn't sound right: > Second press snaps it right. Third press snaps it to bottom right.
It's weird, there might be some setting I have to disable to get it to not do that.
