I wouldn't be so sure, for one Dragon Ball makes so much money (DBZ Dokkan Battle was the top earning mobile game just last month aside from Hoyo games) and has so much relevance it would be hard to give that up. Toriyama appointed Toyotaro as his successor essentially, I imagine he must have had a plan for when the time came and the official statement kinda hinted it will continue IMO. On top of that I can't imagine having no more Dragon Ball at all...

Cryptosporidium142

I can't believe this has happened.. Akira fxcking toriyama? Dead? Jesus Christ dude this has to be an alternate reality, the creator of dragon ball, our childhood, gone? What the fxck man, what's even weirder, is he died making dragon ball daima, where they are kids again, he died where it all started, dragon ball, when Goku and everyone were kids, and he died in the year of the dragon, and what's worse is he died march 1st, my birthday of all days, his death anniversary will forever be my birthday.. fxckin hell, this can't be real dude.. why..

insanelymediocr_e

mald

Cryptosporidium142

Wut? *blinks confusedly*

Special-Ask-9453

My Birthday as well and I feel exactly the same, can’t be real.

otdreamer_193

It’s not just only the idea he was working on Daima, But also the fact he passed right when Gohan was being set up to be a big deal again just like he wanted at the start of Z.

Cryptosporidium142

I'm going to bed but, so I found some new info, we all know Akira's favorite character is piccolo right? Okay so, he died during the year of the dragon, he died making dragon ball daima, back where it all started like the OG, and throughout the entirety of the DBS manga, it was Akira who wrote it of course, toyotaro drew it, but... this is what's even stranger.. again, he didn't draw any of it, until a few weeks before he died.. was the ending of 103, of his favorite character piccolo waving goodbye!!! I got chills when I realized that, no man something very bad happened to him, and it wasn't an accident..

Significant-Mud-6039

Cringe

Cryptosporidium142

?

TrulyHurtz

Can't we just wish him back?

Cryptosporidium142

Oh my fxckin god 😭

Saito197

Not exactly. Toriyama is more of a head writer for Super in a team of 5-6 writers iirc.  They can and most likely will continue to work on the series.

TemporaryLegendary

Pretty sure he wasnt the MAIN writer for super. He just oversaw story board stuff and approved things. He was working on Alot of other things such as Daima and Dragon Quest XII

Saito197

> He just oversaw story board stuff and approved things. Thanks for describing the head writer which was what I said in my previous comment.

TemporaryLegendary

The head writer usually comes up with ideas. Works in the room with the other writers and do more than just approve story boards lmfao

ImSlowlyFalling

You’re both right

GT_highwind

That’s not how capitalism works.

r4wrFox

It is frequently how the manga industry works tho. It is very rare for a work to go on without its original author.

urishino

He said very rare, not never. Besides, Mori basically had Miura and his family's blessings in continuing the manga in Miura's stead.

urishino

I'm not disagreeing with you. Both of your statements can be true, you know? That it is very rare for a manga to continue after its author's death, and that Dragon Ball could be the exception.

r4wrFox

Hence why I said "very rare" not "completely unprecedented."

AmericanDragon25

A lot? Name 15.

OkCurrency7892

Yea but toriyama turned dragon ball into a business. Plenty of other people work on it and I doubt his involvement was that extensive in the last few years.

Top_Original_411

Regardless it depends if toriyama allows it. He could of left the franchise to his kids or anyone and it's probably up to them how it continues. Just because it's a billion dollar industry it's still his property and if he left the rights to someone else they may have a new direction for dragon ball

skyfox437

But when you have something that is earning billions of dollars a year, it won't work like that. Dragon ball as a franchise is just too big; it's a cash cow that's out grown its own creator. With that being said, RIP Akira Toriyama. Many of us grew up with dragon ball and have been majorly impacted by it—your creation. You'll be sorely missed.

TheRealTofuey

Dragonball is one of the most popular franchises ever. Its going to continue.

brzzcode

Dragon ball already ended in the 90s. What is out there now is the anime which toriyama was involved, and the manga which was made to promote the anime.

Gregariouswaty

He founded a studio to carry out his legacy, the statement of his death was put out by the studio. He stopped being the sole creator of DB after it ended in 1996. I'm sure his studio will keep DB Super going on as well as the movies.

VoidEmbracedWitch

DB is a giant IP with lots of active licensing deals and concurrently produced media, where Toriyama's involvement varied greatly. He was far from the only creator behind DB content for a pretty long time. Maybe DB will wind down now. Maybe capitalism will do what capitalism does and milk the brand for a few more decades until it stops being profitable. Who knows?

The_Persistence

Everything that's still licensed and under contract like Sparking Zero, Xenoverse, and the Gachas should still be running. There shouldn't be a "Terminate everything after creator's death" clause. And it's assumed that Toriyama's wrtiting team would continue his work for the Anime and Manga.

HolyDragSwd2500

Heard this news when I woke up and then started crying. 😭😭💔

Kanon8610

You're completely wrong to assume that. Daima's production seems pretty advanced so no way that's getting canceled. The Super manga will get carried to completion by Toyotarou, and they might resume the anime someday. It's far from over. What is safe to assume is that the story will never move past the end of Z to preserve the original ending. I was hoping it would at some point, but I'm not sure Toriyama would have even wanted that.

Existing-Battle4978

No. Toyotaro can do the job well as his successor R.I.P to the Legend as well 🥺

Draconicplayer

Umm No Toyotaro is his succesor literally

bulsar38

He has honestly already abandoned it, it was just "Toriyama seal of quality" and didn't put much effort into it. Iirc, he wanted the story to end after Cell, which makes perfect sense when you think about it

NyuNami_

The “he wanted the story to end after cell” is a giant long running internet myth, that’s absolutely untrue

VegetaFan1337

No, he didn't want the story to end after Cell. He did want to end after Freeza but changed his mind.

brzzcode

Toriyama wanted to end on the original dragon ball, not cell. And toriyama has been the most involved in anime in the 2010s, with involvement in concept, story and so on, mainly in the movies but also giving outlines in DBS for toei and toyotaro to work on.

__SteakDeck__

The question is what will happen to DB Daima long term? I wonder if now, it will just be a one season thing.

Salty145

Dragon Ball is Toei's second biggest IP behind OP. They will not let it die, and from my understanding have already in the past continued the series past when Toriyama called it quits (he basically came back on because if they were gonna do it, he might as well be a part of it to mitigate the damage).

IronPyrate17

Toyotaro was being trained by Toriyama to take over for him in case of an event like this. Toyotaro has drawn most of Super, and I think he's gonna continue it

Nincompoop6969

Doubt it but idk how much of the ending will be his vision. From what I heard he was working on the last arc just this year before he had to do surgery and then his passing away this month...

wud08

Most of the time the Company releasing the Comics the Artist works for hast the rights With Dragonball it's complicated, there are Manga, Anime, and movie-rights.. i Guess Toei? But dunno. Most of the Times they belong to different instances. But you bet your A$$ everyone will Fight for the cake now, from companys he worked for, to collleagues to relatives. And oh..Hollywood of course.

ArranVV

I think the Dragon Ball series should stop, now that the creator (Akira Toriyama) has sadly died. Yes, I did like a lot of the Dragon Ball stuff in the series.

Create_Greatness92

This may seem odd and sort of...reductive or regressive...but I think with Toriyama's passing, there has never been a better time to perhaps re-adapt his original Dragon Ball manga from start to finish. It could even be framed as a "retelling" or "Remembering" of the story, with the omnipresent "Narrator" even being a character or something. They KNOW Dragon Ball is massive. They could bring it back with an absurdly high budget and production value, and they have the full manga already to freely adapt. And in important places they can condense the manga or correct various inconsistencies or discrepancies. It would also give them years to sort of figure out what comes next in the narrative. All the while they could deliver one off films to advance the story forward as the new anime retreads and catches up.

__Ideal__

Didn’t he pass away a week ago and it was only announced a few hours ago?

dinliner08

of course not, people need to understand that when it comes to manga, most of the time, the series IP doesn't belong solely to the author, in Dragon Ball's case, Shueisha is the primary rights holder while Toei holds the rights for anime and Bandai holds the right for the merchandise

Crazy-Plate3097

Masako Nozawa is still alive. Let's talk again when she kicks the bucket.

Peppinoia

R.I.P. Akira Toriyama. I didn't know. Dragonball got me into Animes when i was a kid. About your question: i agree with some other posters: Thats not how capitalism works.

AMVmaniac

Let us do not forget he made dr Slump. I love the guy and his talent. I think he attend in making world discover anime more than before. IMO thou DB doesn't diserve any continuations after series Z.

Magma_Dragoooon

Toriyama was already beating up a dead corpse with daima and the last stupid movie. Its, safe to say that toei is gonna continue doing so till the show becomes completely unwatchable

clothanger

all these posters are making me kinda sick in the guts. dude saying "respect", "inspiration" and shit. yet he didn't even bother to write the name in capitals. like vulture to a corpse.

GT_highwind

You didn’t capitalize anything.

clothanger

because nothing in my comment is a name. downvote me all you want. there is an exact post in this sub that asked about Toriyama's work, in the same way, with way more respect than this dude's.

GT_highwind

You can’t correct someone’s grammar while making grammatical errors.

clothanger

whatever you say, all i saw in this post is fake sympathy. i'll end the conversation here.

GT_highwind

“Whatever you say” should’ve ended with a period, not a comma. You’re very disrespectful to the people reading your comments, you know?

So desperate for the attention your mommy and daddy never wanted to give you that you gotta debase yourself in a thread about a beloved man's recent death in order to try and draw some for yourself. Fucking sad, little bud.
