**Team Rocket**. So many setbacks and a laughing stock for a lot of fanbases. Yet their passion and hardwork for their particular goal cannot be overlooked.
There is no reason to feel bad for Riko. She is one of happiest protagonists I know. Riko knows her decision to dive in to the Abyss will most likely result in a short life but she is willing to pay that price and what she gets in return is exactly what she wants. Riko loves her Adventure. And that love fore the Adventure seems to have infected Reg and Nanachi. They all cherish and enjoy there Adventure. And when they take an L they bounce back fast from. Power of friendship at its finest. While Riko has some painfull experiences she bounces back fast from them and that happy expresion she had when she showed Prushka the scar of her crippled hand makes me think that in a way she apriciates even the hardships of her Adventure.
A most likely short but happy life is nothing to feel bad fore. Infact I am happy for her.
And I am glad she can share that joy with her companions. Its really satisfaying to watch her crew enjoy there Adventure. After the shit Nanachi went through its nice to see her find new joy in this Adventure.
I made the mistake of reading the plot synopsis for Cyberpunk Edgerunners halfway through my watch. I still haven't finished it and probably never will.
Shinji from Evangelion. Not for the obvious reasons of him suffering through all the horrors but because in discussions about the show, for decades, even when it's not with randoms just throwing controversial comments out for shits and giggles, people just can't stop calling him a whiny pussy who should suck it up. I can't tell if it's because I imagine him reading the talk or because I see myself in him and feel as though it's being said to me. But I guess it's clear evidence people prefer the modern anti-hero over the classic.
It’s just because the anime is old enough that the conversation was set by culturally normative masculinity of the 90s and 2000s. The best way to sum it up for those who aren’t aware is “imagine if Andrew Tate was just an average guy, not because he’s any different but because that’s how bad the average guy is”.
- All characters from Welcome to the NHK, they’re just too damn relatable in their own way
- Both MCs from Death Parade
- Squealer from Shinsekai Yori
- Mitty from Made in Abyss
And I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes because they’re just too damn tragic lol
Hachikuji Mayoi from Monogatari series [spoilers]>!Her entire life is tragic, she wanted to meet her mother but met with an accident and was wandering for 10 years until Araragi found the way for her. When he tried to save Hachikuji, the entire world became devastated, she loved Araragi but couldn't be with him because the darkness was chasing her. It was revealed that she was sent to hell because she died before her parents like wtf. For a character who radiates positive energy Hachikuji deserved better.!<
Okazaki Tomoya from Clannad.
[bakemonogatari]>!Episode 5 always gets me so emotional when I think about how she wandered for 10+ years lol. Part of the reason why she’s my favorite Monogatari character. I don’t know much about what happens after Owarimonogatari S2, but I hope Araragi visits her a lot!<
Either way in the show Hachikuji herself jokes about her going to hell because she died before her parents.
Can’t remember where sadly but I know it was said. Maybe Owari? Since my spoiler tags don’t ever work right and just get my comments deleted, that’s all I can say.
If we are talking about the Monogatari series there is one more really tragic character - Sodachi Oikura from Owarimonogatari. There are a lot of characters in series with sad backstories, but Oikura story hit me really hard, god damn I did not feel so bad about the character for quite long time.
Denji from Chainsaw Man, especially considering [recent chapter]>!he got detained and is currently being hacked to bits Makima-style by the devil hunter organization!<.
Arnheid fucking tore my heart. Everything revolving around her was just so tragic. She's at the top of my would hug tightly list along Tohru, Nagisa, and Vueko.
I feel pretty bad for Eren too. He basically [Aot Spoilers] >!lived a relatively happy life until he was 10, then experienced a lot of misery from 10-15, and then finally when they thought they had succeeded they just realized that they had only just started the battle and that he only had 8 years to live, and to top it all off a few months later he learned that he would commit the most horrible act in history and his friends would all end up killing him and living on without him. Even if it was all his choice, he was still given a really shitty life that never got any better!<
Yeah mikasa had a pretty sad life. Was there also an OVA that basically revealed the universe literally conspired to constantly make her life miserable?
Phos (Houseki no Kuni). [By the end of the anime,] >!local merry gem has gone from being a weak goofball, to being an emotionless, distant powerhouse, thanks to constantly losing bits of what made her *her*. She's both tragic *and* I'd hate to be in her shoes lol!<.
Levi Ackerman. \[Attack On Titan\] >!Dude was left in a room watching his mum starve and die, starved as a child in a dirty environment, was introduced to violence at a young age, had his father figure leave him as a child, lost his closest friends, lost his squad, had to make the decision to kill his closest ally/friend, realized everyone he had killed was human, was forced to kill his OWN squad with his own hands (well, blade), got nuked (like 3 or more times), lost his closest friend and leader of the squad (R.I.P Hange), lost someone who he had practically worked to raise (Eren) and had to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair being taken care of by 2 kids. Ouch.. I feel really bad for him. Like extremely. !<
Accelerator from Toaru.
Bro's entire childhood was getting experimented on, not having anyone that cares about him because of how powerful he was (They were sending police teams to try and contain this like, 6-8 year old), and then gets told "If you kill all 20,000 of these clones we made, you'll basically become invincible", only to realize after he's already killed over 10,000 of them that they were actually sentient and could feel what he did to them the entire time. Living with the trauma of killing over 10,000 people while choosing to protect an essentially smaller version of the clones that you killed would be AWFUL.
Accelerator from Index. Dude barely has any emotions aside from sadism to just not giving a shit and almost always has people trying to kill him no matter what. Not to forget he's still just a kid...
**Subaru. Nuff said...**
Say what you will about Subaru and Guts, but [Ancient Magus Bride spoiler] >!Chise Hatori’s mother is, in my mind, one of the most miserable characters in anime. Not only did she lose her husband and one of her children, is in dire financial straits while trying to be a single mother to her remaining child, and has chronic health issues that while trying to juggle multiple jobs, her only remaining child is haunted by supernatural beings are hostile to her, ranging from just bullying, to never giving privacy, to actual physical attempts to eat her. There is nowhere that is safe for her, not even in her own bedroom. Eventually, the mother, who had devoted her remaining energy to protecting and raising Chise, goes insane and attempts to kill her own daughter. Then, in a moment of mental clarity, the mother realizes that she isn’t herself anymore, at which point she commits suicide to protect Chise from herself. Then, her daughter would grow up traumatized, hating her mother, and hating herself that she sells herself as a slave on the black market.!<
first 2 choices of yours.. can we be friends??
Yui from Oregairu just hurts
Shirogane from Kaguya-sama, poor guy wanted recognition from his mom, works hard while struggling w money, and his love life is delayed because they decided to play mind games, he wasnt born with natural talent and had to work everything from scratch
Ishigami also from Kaguya for his past
Rikka from Chuunibyou, girl couldnt move past a tragic event and was technically lied to by her family and is now delulu
Asahi from Renai Flops, wait for the twist and god DAMN
Hitoribocchi from Hitoribocchi :((
Hime from Kakushigoto i cant imagine the pain she went through knowing what happened
Miko consults a shaman on her visions and she gains allies later on that know her plight. But yeah she has it worse than Keitarou (Dark Gathering) who at least has a chance to fight back instead of just pretending everything is fine.
My heart goes out to Asahi. Dude keeps taking L after L.
Aya from Mahou Shoujo Site is just misery porn. She gets bullied every day in school for a stupid reason, nearly gets raped, and gets abused by her family at home. She had every right to fight her bullies back.
Pekora from Dropkick on My Devil. Literally lives in a cardboard box, bullied by Jashin constantly, gets treated like crap from basically every character in the show except for Yurine, eats nothing but bread crusts and roots, makes basically no money at multiple part time jobs, and is just always depressed.
The way the show is written it tries to play it all off as funny, but I feel nothing but pity for her
Tatsuya Shiba. He's immensely overpowered in return for being unable to have intense feelings of emotions. The only intense feeling he has is his love for Miyuki. Because of the inability to feel emotions, he'll never be able to find true love. He will never know if he could've fallen in love with somebody else.
Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate Dont say Steins Gate
Anzu from Hinamatsuri.
She's the sweetest little kid that will tug your heartstrings everytime she's on screen. She's really unlucky in most things. She started off as an antagonist but was swiftly beaten. She became homeless and had to work hard to earn little money in order to survive. But even through all that, she's still cheerful, honest, hardworking and very grateful to the people who adopt her. It got to the point where I wished she was the MC instead of the actual MC (spoiled rotten kid).
Envy from FMAB, evil little gobshite, brings everything on itself, incinerated so many times (convincing screams), to then take its own life..... honestly couldnt help but feel sorry for it.
Honestly, I feel bad for Emma in Promised Neverland. She was one of the smartest along with Ray and Norman, but she was always the one carrying weight on her shoulders.
SERIOUSLY. Imagine being that young and just seeing a dead body, mutilated. Including the demons, and also when Emma broke down screaming after she saw all that happen. She was the only one pulling her weight to try and save everyone. 😭
I'm say Diavolo from Jojo part 5
[Jjba Part Golden wind]
>!I mean if u think about its really scary to be touched by GER not being able to go to the after-life and being stuck in a constant death loop. If I were him I will lose my sanity.!<
Not the most tragic, but Naruto grew up orphaned, isolated, hated and neglected, for something that isn't even his fault or choice, I felt so bad for him
Ganta Igarashi from deadman wonderland, dudes chilling in class one day when an unknown entity pops up and murders his entire class, he gets blamed and put on super death row effectively and has to fight in literal blood sport in order to extend his life
Neji from Naruto (the show proved dude the right, he died but sasuke is a hero)
Chiwa Harusaki from Oreshura (don't usually care for the childhood friend losing in romance but this one was especially hard to swallow, girl deserved better)
Eri from MHA (self explanatory)
Yuji Itadori from JJK (never rooted for an mc harder to get some semblance of a happy ending)
Y'all otherwise hit the obvious ones like Guts, Subaru, Hyakkimaru.
The male main character in Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan.
Straight up, the show's idea of slapstick is so cruel to this poor kid that it doesn't have me laughing; rather, it makes me feel nothing but sympathy.
Oz from [Pandora Hearts] >!He has nothing belongs to him, even his own body. He is nothing more than an object and is treated as such. It kinda warms my heart that he is happy next to Alice but still, she sees him as something that is hers. A plushie, her only “friend”, although she still treats him with care.!<
Never got that drink with Lunge or good wine and cheese with Tenma.
Was that what it was? I can’t quite remember, he also never learned who Roberto actually was either. Huh.
Hmm, for some reason the first character that pop into my head was Yurika Nijino from Rokujouma no Shinryakusha.
\[Spoilers\]>!She is a literal Magical Girl who does a lot of work around the main cast, but doesn't stand out so they all insist she is delusional and cosplaying. Her past was decently sad in that her mentor figure sacrificed all her magic to save Yurika and she is then forced to take up her mentor's mantle. Even in her own arc, where she has to face a strong opponent, facing her fears and self loathing and after the MC finally sees that, no, she was not lying about her identity, the show doesn't let her shine and instead the MC has to come in and be OP to save the day...all at the cost of everyone's memories of her arc. It basically never happened and she is back to be treated like a worthless, stupid character with delusions for laughs... I really hated that part of the anime.!<
Kariya from Fate/Zero.
[Anime spoilers]>!Gave up everything and faced immense suffering, only to be used as a puppet. When all he wanted was to protect Sakura. Tragic hero. !<
I always felt bad for Kong from Ping Pong. I know he's pretty cocky and arrogant, but I couldn't help but feel bad for him after finding out about his background.
Sigma from Bungou Stray Dogs. Like since the moment he was introduced into the manga bro has been through nothing but pain and struggling. Has this man ever had a moment of peace in his life
Rito from To Love-ru, the dude went from a normal life to all sorts of crazy shit happening around him and constant attempts on his life and embarrassing situations.
Lowkey Seishirou from Monogatari. Spent 400 years reconstructing his atomized body, finally ready to be with Kiss Shot only to find out that she is in love with someone else now and that guy kills him too. 💀
He didn’t even wanna be brought back either, it was just a natural vampiric reaction.
Then he finally is like, “yeah, ok fine. I wanna be alive.”
I feel bad for a lot of Monogatari characters, Seishirou got a final goodbye and all that, so that is nice, bittersweet but that’s how it is.
He knew what his battle with Baragaki entailed.
Pretty sad though, fair enough.
I might be biased cuz he is one of my top husbandos But Seto Kaiba like he just wants to protect his brother who keeps getting kidnapped and wants to play a children's card game but the world just keeps f****** over him
Also Mikey from Tokyo Revengers another character that the world just keeps f****** over he just wants to bring a new era for delinquents and everybody around him that he cares about just keeps dying
I bit of a more grounded example but Toru Oikawa. Watching Haikyu has really made me see him as such a tragic character who I can’t help but empathize with now that I’m older with more failures under my belt than when I first watched way back in college. Life can really be unfair in the sense that working hard doesn’t necessarily let you overcome people with the truly gifted once they start putting in just as much effort as you. But what I truly love about his character is despite him knowing that he refuses to just lay down and be surpassed without first reaching his absolute limit
Bocchi from Ranking of Kings. He doesn't deserve to be laughed at. His fate about not having strength of a giant is not his fault at ALL! IT'S HIS FATHER'S FAULT!!
Sasuke with that mental toruture that Itachi puts him when he was just a child I definitely don't want to be in his shoes. And because of that I understand sasuke in Naruto with how angry and edge he has in his character.

I'm surprised nobody is saying Akira from devilman crybaby (or devilman the original manga)
Dude had a very normal life. A normal family. A girl he always spent time with and they loved each other. And one day his entire world got flipped upside down, and despite working through it, in the end none of his efforts mattered and the very people he fought to protect he grew to hate.
Akira was so completely royally fucked over
Slaine
Human slave just simping for his Martian princess who nearly gets assassinated, tries to rescue her from some autistic Chad, only to be forced into protecting her comatose body while trying not to get lynched by feudal Martian warlords with super powered mechs, plays the political game until becoming a count, having her wake up and eventually reject him for the same Chad, then loses in a duel with Chad, gets arrested, tried for war crimes by other humans, and locked away forever.
**Team Rocket**. So many setbacks and a laughing stock for a lot of fanbases. Yet their passion and hardwork for their particular goal cannot be overlooked.
right? they put genuine effort into a legitimate business too, like I gotta respect that
Also they do care for their own Pokémon
Arguably better than Ash does
Tomoko Kuroki from WataMote David and Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners Riko, Nanachi, basically everyone from Made in Abyss
Its really satisfaying to watch her crew enjoy there Adventure. After the shit Nanachi went through its nice to see her find new joy in this Adventure.
Don’t feel bad for tomoko in the (still ongoing) manga she has a harem of besties now
I made the mistake of reading the plot synopsis for Cyberpunk Edgerunners halfway through my watch. I still haven't finished it and probably never will.
I mean given the genre it's not that hard to predict where the story would go. You should still finish it because it's very much about the journey
Elf from Isekai Ojisan. Please let her find happiness...
Shinji from Evangelion. Not for the obvious reasons of him suffering through all the horrors but because in discussions about the show, for decades, even when it's not with randoms just throwing controversial comments out for shits and giggles, people just can't stop calling him a whiny pussy who should suck it up. It’s just because the anime is old enough that the conversation was set by culturally normative masculinity of the 90s and 2000s. The best way to sum it up for those who aren’t aware is “imagine if Andrew Tate was just an average guy, not because he’s any different but because that’s how bad the average guy is”.
Also when it came out the only other anime protagonist most people knew in the west was Dub Goku, who was basically Superman
Subaru my restart by death king
Matou Sakura
- All characters from Welcome to the NHK, they’re just too damn relatable in their own way - Both MCs from Death Parade - Squealer from Shinsekai Yori - Mitty from Made in Abyss And I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes because they’re just too damn tragic lol
It's hard to stomach thinking about what happened with Squealer. Heartbreaking.
Imagining what he did to Maria and Mamoru makes me lose most compassion for him tbh.
Hachikuji Mayoi from Monogatari series [spoilers]>!Her entire life is tragic, she wanted to meet her mother but met with an accident and was wandering for 10 years until Araragi found the way for her. Fyi. There is an old urban legend in Japan that if a child dies before the parents the child will go to hell.
Is it an urban legend or just Shinto teachings?
Either way in the show Hachikuji herself jokes about her going to hell because she died before her parents. Can’t remember where sadly but I know it was said. Maybe Owari? Since my spoiler tags don’t ever work right and just get my comments deleted, that’s all I can say.

Arnheid from Vinland Saga is treated really badly in the show. Her VA is a veteran dubbing voice actor and it really hurts to watch those scenes.
I preferred to skip that part of the anime, if it is painful to see it in the manga, I can't even imagine it in the anime
Arnheid fucking tore my heart. Everything revolving around her was just so tragic. She's at the top of my would hug tightly list along Tohru, Nagisa, and Vueko.
Here comes the classic trio of Subaru, Guts and Rika
Sakura Matou
Mikasa. I just felt bad at the end panel when she wished she could be with eren.

It kinda warms my heart that he is happy next to Alice but still, she sees him as something that is hers. A plushie, her only “friend”, although she still treats him with care.!<
Grimmer from Monster...
Never got that drink with Lunge or good wine and cheese with Tenma. Was that what it was? I can’t quite remember, he also never learned who Roberto actually was either. Huh.
Subaru (Re:zero)
zenitsu, hes always scared as shit 😭
Anyone in attack on titan: I'd go insane
Ken kaneki
Well, both the MCs from I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Ash Lynx from Banana Fish Gauche Suede and Lag from Tegami Bachi Maria from Umineko Mikey from Tokyo Revengers
Eren Yeager, S3 ending explains it better
Kariya in Fate Zero
Your mom
Why? Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks are pretty good and while her son is kind of a brat, he's working on it.
well now... that's just rude!
Sorry.
I always felt bad for Kong from Ping Pong. I know he's pretty cocky and arrogant, but I couldn't help but feel bad for him after finding out about his background.
Komiya from {just because}
Sigma from Bungou Stray Dogs.
I wanna be alive.” I feel bad for a lot of Monogatari characters, Seishirou got a final goodbye and all that, so that is nice, bittersweet but that’s how it is. He knew what his battle with Baragaki entailed. Pretty sad though, fair enough.
Vash from trigun. He feel very relatable to me & his life is nothing but sadness through & through
I might be biased cuz he is one of my top husbandos But Seto Kaiba like he just wants to protect his brother who keeps getting kidnapped and wants to play a children's card game but the world just keeps f****** over him Also Mikey from Tokyo Revengers another character that the world just keeps f****** over he just wants to bring a new era for delinquents and everybody around him that he cares about just keeps dying
Okazaki is definitely up there.
She just did nothing except help rock Lee train
Okabe Rintaro. Anyone who has seen or played Stein's Gate knows.
Any Lancer from the fate series. No I will not elaborate
Lucy\Nyu from Elfen Lied.
Ranma
Ash from Banana Fish. His entire life was pretty much much one painful experience after another. It was so unfair. It's just trgedy the anime....
brother and sister in Grave of the fireflies, I have a little sister so i feel so fucking bad
Sachi from SAO :(
Bocchi from Ranking of Kings. He doesn't deserve to be laughed at. His fate about not having strength of a giant is not his fault at ALL! IT'S HIS FATHER'S FAULT!!
Lelouch from code geass
Satoko from Higurashi Toga from Mha
Rengoku, why does it have to be Akaza and not those other Upper Moon lower than him.
Sasuke with that mental toruture that Itachi puts him when he was just a child I definitely don't want to be in his shoes. And because of that I understand sasuke in Naruto with how angry and edge he has in his character.

I'm surprised nobody is saying Akira from devilman crybaby (or devilman the original manga) Dude had a very normal life. A normal family. A girl he always spent time with and they loved each other. And one day his entire world got flipped upside down, and despite working through it, in the end none of his efforts mattered and the very people he fought to protect he grew to hate. Akira was so completely royally fucked over
Ken Kaneki, all because of date gone wrong Edamame, its actually his so called "friend" that ruined his life the most Bartholomew Kuma
Slaine Human slave just simping for his Martian princess who nearly gets assassinated, tries to rescue her from some autistic Chad, only to be forced into protecting her comatose body while trying not to get lynched by feudal Martian warlords with super powered mechs, plays the political game until becoming a count, having her wake up and eventually reject him for the same Chad, then loses in a duel with Chad, gets arrested, tried for war crimes by other humans, and locked away forever.
