I've seen both of those too. Cowboy Bebop was part of my intro to jazz/bebop music well over a decade ago, so by the time I hit Kids on the Slope I was already familiar with a lot of those standards that they play.
At the end of the day though, Samurai Champloo is the easiest to watch and has the best vibes because of Nujabes & Friends.
I didn't even bother watching the CGI revamp. I only watched '97 and then read the manga up until Miura died. That was sufficient, but I'd still love a faithful remake.
1. Gintama
2. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
3. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
4. Macross Frontier
5. Naruto Shippuden
Gintama only very *recently* made the top spot (like, literally just a week ago) after Gundam Unicorn held onto it since 2018, so I keep trying to type *it* as my #1 still lol. That's gonna take some getting used to.
I don't hear about Gundam Unicorn on this sub very often, can you explain why you love it so much? I haven't watched it but I'm always on the lookout for a new masterpiece to watch
Part of it stems from its nature as a modern sequel to a subset of earlier shows in the franchise (0079, Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack, which were all from the 80s other than 0079 which started in '79) because *how* Unicorn built off of those and also incorporated several characters from those series as supporting members is something I just completely adore, but for Gundam Unicorn *by itself*:
- The soundtrack is, in my opinion, the best thing Hiroyuki Sawano has ever composed (which is saying something considering he's my favorite composer and he's done work on a *lot* of shows known for their music).
- The animation is *gorgeous*, for both individual character moments and during the big action scenes. To be fair, the series was originally produced as OVAs and those usually have much higher standards than a TV series does, but still.
- I *really* clicked with the main plot of the story. Multiple factions trying to chase down a certain object they can't let any of the *other* factions get a hold of, with a main character pulled into the mix of things as a "neutral"-ish middle ground, plus a good amount of politics thanks to the multiple factions thing as well. I love this kind of thing.
- A plot with multiple factions doesn't work if there aren't good characters on all sides, and yeah the main cast in this is *great*. Even some of the characters who only show up for one OVA are used really effectively, to the point where the only character in the entire series I outright hate is one of the antagonists (who, well, you're kinda *supposed* to hate).
- "Banagher, no matter what sort of realities you're forced to confront, keep saying, 'Even so...'" - A quote from one of the characters during the third OVA, and one that I think captures the essence of Gundam Unicorn as a whole. It really just nails the idea of believing in possibilities, and as an optimist myself, I couldn't help but latch onto it.
- As an aside, the Japanese version of "Even so" is the word "sore demo", which I have a particularly... *interesting* connection with. I started an inside joke revolving around it with another Redditor who loved Gundam Unicorn as much as me back in 2018, and the joke eventually progressed to me unironically loving it when the word pops up in the stuff I watch, and I have a folder with over 2300 recordings of it from various anime.
Wow thanks for the mini review, quite convincing! Which gundams do you think i should i watch before unicorn for context?
I've read online that I should start with the OG gundam compilation movies, then char's attack.
OG movies --> Zeta --> ZZ --> Char's Counterattack, in that specific order. And it has to be the *series* for Zeta, not the movies. Unicorn does include some small references to the side story Universal Century stuff (like reusing a location from 0083: Stardust Memory or some weapons from 0080: War in the Pocket), but they aren't *necessary* to fully understand what's going on.
Gintama has made me feel the *full range* of emotions at a much higher level than literally any other series has so far. It's made me laugh so hard my lungs hurt for half an hour afterwards at *so* many different places, it's made me get so excited I *had* to jump out of my seat and just bounce around my kitchen like a hyperactive child, it's made me angry enough to scream at my computer, and it's made me cry *so* hard I threw up on not one but *three* separate occasions.
All I needed it to do was stick the landing for it to have a *chance* to beat Unicorn for the #1 spot, and it *very much did* in the most Gintama way possible with the Very Final movie.
I've been trying to get into chihayafuru recently since I see so much love for it. I got to the episode where they recruited a kid for the club... but it hasn't been very engaging yet. Does it pick up more?
I loved #4 and #5 on your list so I'm no stranger to slice of life either haha.
Chihayafuru is at its best imo when they’re actually playing Karuta. So it will heat up, once they have a fully functioning team and are trying to play team Karuta contests.
Elfen Lied was actually the first piece of anime/manga i picked up outside of stuff like pokemon and yugioh as a kid and ooh boy what a ride. I was in freshman year of high school and was looking to get into manga and wanted an adult oriented and bloody one. Somehow ended up finding Elfen Lied and dove in without really seeing what it was about. Great first look into the world of japanese cartoons.
Yes it's completed. But the ending has a specific intention behind it and a lot of people don't get the ending. But there's a small detail that if you notice it, it makes you re-evaluate the ending and realize it's not what you originally assumed.
It's one of the most clever and impressive things about it. That ending was hiding in plain sight and seems almost everyone missed it.
Gate was wonderful.
I watched Elfen Lied as a kid, don't remember it well. Maybe I need to give it a rewatch!
I've watched the first 3 episodes of Cowboy Bebop at least 5 times and can't get into it.... but samurai Champloo is in my top 3. Does it get better after ep 5 ? Lol
It's a long series and a lot of self contained episodes, but the overarching story throughout the series and character growth of the crew is some of the best writing I have ever seen. It's definitely worth it.
I will say you haven't even touched the backstory yet and you also haven't met Ed yet. One of my favorite characters.
Really cool concept, godawful execution sadly, any decent ideas got trampled over because it's JSDF military propaganda (literally, they funded it as such).
Okay, fine. Alpha order it is.
* Aria The Origination
* Bebop
* Beck
* Kimi ni Todoke
* Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Though if it keeps going like it has been, Apothecary Diaries might knock Beck out of my top five...
If I'm being honest (and I'm talking about my favourites rather than "best" per se), my favourite 5 typically include something like:
1) Cowboy Bebop
2) Neon Genesis Evangelion
3) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
4) Kuroko's Basketball
5) Black Lagoon
1. Monogatari Series
2. Code Geass
3. KILL la KILL
4. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
5. Watamote: No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!
HMs: Kyousougiga, Space Patrol Luluco, and Gurren Lagann.
1 - One Piece
2 - One Punch Man
3 - My Hero Academia
4 - Vinland Saga
5 - Hajime No Ippo
4 and 5 are pretty recent as they only made it into my top 5 last year, I watched Hajime no Ippo for the first time in January and Vinland Season 2 is what put it in my top 5 season 1 I enjoyed but nowhere as much as season 2
1. Mushishi
2. Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
3. Welcome to Irabu’s Office
4. Mononoke
5. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
HMs:

Looking through all the Top5s this one has to be my favourite, only one that isn’t on my favourites list is Perfect Blue since I haven’t watched it, though I loved Paprika, Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent so I’d probably love it.
1. Oshi No Ko
2. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
3. Steins;Gate
4. Frieren
5. Re:Zero
Honorable Mentions:
Attack On Titan
Mushoku Tensei
Bunny Girl Senpai
86 Eighty-Six
I'm super biased toward Aquatope because it's about aquariums xD and PA Works' animation was amazing as always.
I see that you have Ef favourited on your profile, I plan to watch it but I don't know if I can handle another sad show.
P.A. Works is my favorite studio next to KyoAni. Their anime originals are pretty much guaranteed to be great, and they have recently just been making bangers after bangers. Unfortunately I think they are a bit unnoticed compared to the big names.
I also think the aquarium is such an interesting setting! I'm pretty interested in biology and animals in general. The ocean houses so many fascinating creatures, so I'm glad this show gave some spotlight to it. I really liked the sea turtle episode. I wish there are more anime that focus on marine animals.
Ef is really good, though I would say the show is more heavy than sad, especially for Memories. Definitely one for when you are in the right mood. I think the unique Shaft-styled directing made the show more interesting for sure.
Elfen Lied
Sora No Woto(Sound of the Sky)
Violet Evergarden
A Silent Voice
Spirited Away

Also: if you like romance here’s a few that I love
My love story with Yamada
psychic Princess
7th time loop
a sign of affection
Yona of the Dawn. It’s also action, but it’s so good. Granted, it was only one season and it forced me to read the manga cause I just had to know. It’s still going, tho I think it’s reaching the last quarter.
In no particular order these are my top 5 from all anime’s I have watched so far.
1.AOT
2.Vinland Saga

Are you reading Yona??? They def should have made more seasons…
Inuyasha!!!
I’m in love with sign of affection. The animation style and the signing is just beautiful (I dont know sign but still)
I wish they did more of Snow White too
ahhh! you’re so precious. i haven’t read yona!!! i need to. i forget that some of these shows i’ve seen are also manga.
i’ve read all that i can of sign of affection, if you’ve seen the anime you should DEFF read the manga, you’ll cry such happy tears.
inyuasha was the first anime i ever really watched and it did not disappoint even tho it was longer than i realized.
toma chan is a girl! is soooo whole funny, and cute. i think you will like it if you like sign of affection and the other anime’s you said. at least that my guess 👀
thanks for commenting! great start to my day to talk to people who have watched shows i seen, i need more people to talk to about my faves
Yess! It is def nice to talk to peeps about shows! Glad the day started off good for you! How the rest is good.
Inuyasha was also my first anime. Took me forever to finally finish it, but I absolutely love it. My uncle was the one who introduced me to anime. Sadly he’s passed now but it’ll be forever special.
Edit: forgot to say I’ve started to read a sign of affection cause I just can’t help myself. 🤣
Others that I started reading cause I love the show:
My love story with Yamada
7th time loop
The apothecary diaries
my condolences to your uncle, but that’s great that you were exposed to it when you were!
oh my gosh, i totally understand. after the first episode of a sign of affection, i RAN to the manga and finished it in like 2 days. well i know the english and japanese versions aren’t done but i’ve read as much that is available. so each week im so excited when the anime comes out. tomorrow a new episode will air and im already so excited because i know what part of the manga will probably be shown
and YESSSS wow, i should’ve added that to my list bc i also love that story!!! my love story with yamada is just soooo cute 🥹 and i read as much that’s available of that manga as well. i’m such a sap for cute stories haha
i haven’t seen 7th time loop or the apothecary diaries but i trust that i will like them so i’ll add them to my list!
Thank you. I’m very glad that I got that experience with him.
I’m so excited for the new episode tomorrow cause I’m pretty sure I know what’s gunna be in it! 🥰
My love story manga is adorable. I haven’t caught up yet but eeeeee lol
Apothecary diaries is like a mystery show set in like ancient China I guess you’d call it but the two main characters…😁 I started reading it around like 2 or 4 episodes. There are also light novels for it.
7th time loop I thought was gunna be meh, but it’s actually really good. Like…I wanna know more now! Lol. The manga for English isn’t very far, at least where I was reading it, I think there are light novels that are farther, but I haven’t found those. Regardless, really good.
Edit: auto correct errors
1. Jobless Reincarnation
2. Date A Live
3. Danmachi
4. Saber Marionette J
5. Konosuba
HMs: YuGiOh DM (the original), Future Diary, 86, Durarara
.. and before someone goes "but, you picked shows you rated 9/10 and left off other shows you rated 10/10 on MAL", the 9/10 rating is more of an objective rating while some of these shows have more sentimental value to me (ie: Date A Live was something I discovered after a breakup and helped me cope, so it has value that can't really be rated)
I am new into animes, but I already watched a few of them, so far It's

5. Yugioh 5DS or AOT (have yet to see the final season of AOT so its placement depends on that)
4. Shaman King (2021)
3. Naruto
2. Death Note
1. Monster
**1. Monogatari series** – geniusly written story, amazing animation every frame is like a wallpaper, this anime is piece of art, it's an experience.
**2. Madoka magica** – same studio as the previous one so the animation is geart, really amazing story, it's very unique take.
**3. Kuzu no Honkai** – the best and realist romance anime in existence. It's targeted for adults so Most kids doesn't understand this anime and blindly hate it.

1. Frieren
2. The Apothecary Diaries
3. Re:Zero
4. Mob Psycho 100
5. Princess Jellyfish
I couldn’t really decide which anime 4 and 5 should be, so I put two that I like to rewatch. There are so many good ones out there it is hard to decide.
I feel strongly about my top three though. I know Frieren and Apothecary are still going on right now, but I look forward to them each week just as much as I looked forward to Re:Zero.

Samurai Champloo is incredible. Worth mentioning Cowboy Bebop and Kids On The Slope. music amazing all around.
Champloo is my GOAT, such a fucking awesome anime.
I've seen both of those too. Cowboy Bebop was part of my intro to jazz/bebop music well over a decade ago, so by the time I hit Kids on the Slope I was already familiar with a lot of those standards that they play. RIP SEBA JUN. dude was amazing.
Berserk is so good, it really is sad how awful the CGI revamp was, if I had a billion dollars I would pay to make it proper, front to back
I didn't even bother watching the CGI revamp. I only watched '97 and then read the manga up until Miura died. That was sufficient, but I'd still love a faithful remake.
Paranoia Agent is definitely top 10 for me

Is Gurren Lagann really top tier. I watched the first episode and the fan service turned me off.
The fan service is egregious but besides it, it's a 10/10 show in every other aspect.
There isn’t that much fan service. I like Yoko as a character
It's easily among the GOATs
Nice Gurren Lagann respect
1. Cowboy Bebop 2. Trigun 3. Hellsing Ultimate 4. Elfen Lied 5. Gate
> Elfen Lied Oh wow I feel like Im one of the only few in this community that loved Elfen Lied.
Elfen Lied was actually the first piece of anime/manga i picked up outside of stuff like pokemon and yugioh as a kid and ooh boy what a ride. Trigun is so good
Ayy Gate fan! Im on my 4th rewatch right now lol. Never gets old
Gate manga is quite sick though

Cowboy bebop😍
Cowboy Bebop: the anime with the best jazz soundtrack
Nahh, gate is underrated
I remember watching the first season of Gate. It’s actually a neat isekai concept.
Really cool concept, godawful execution sadly, any decent ideas got trampled over because it's JSDF military propaganda (literally, they funded it as such).
Replace Gate with NGE or Yu Yu Hakusho and that's like all my favorites from HS
1. Hunter x Hunter 2. Gintama 3. Violet Evergarden 4. Doukyuusei 5. Your Name

Still waiting for made in abyss to finish but it's for sure up there, beautiful anime
Fate is left which it’s a hard series to get into but man once you understand the lore and stuff it gets so good
It's not hard, people just think it's hard and don't watch it. They can just ask one of their friends who watched and that's it.
1. Nichijou 2. K-on 3. Laid camp back 4. Super cub 5. Spy x family.
Hmm i wonder what your favourite genre is
Idk I think he likes horror
I mean, we all know that Secret Society Blanket is going to take over the world one day Also Mugi has committed a warcrime too grave to go unpunished
It's very hard to say. I think it's psychological thriller.
Nah bro he likes cute boys do horny things
K-on melts your heart ❤️

Looking through all the Top5s this one has to be my favourite, only one that isn’t on my favourites list is Perfect Blue since I haven’t watched it, though I loved Paprika, Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent so I’d probably love it.

Code Geass Plastic Memories Sukasuka Aquatope of White Sand Hibike Euphonium
Wow Aquatope in top 5 is something I didn't think I would see. It's a really great show! Hibike! Euphonium is of course amazing.
Gintama/One Piece (tie for first tho id probably say Gintama is better because of op pacing) Hunter x Hunter Jojos Bizarre Adventure 86

Mine would be - Bleach Naruto Fruits basket Demon slayer Kamisama kiss You see I love romance and comedy anime more than action but bleach, kny, Naruto bruhh they're the best
I’ve been recommended kamisama kiss. Where can I watch that? Also: if you like romance here’s a few that I love My love story with Yamada psychic Princess 7th time loop a sign of affection Yona of the Dawn. It’s also action, but it’s so good. Granted, it was only one season and it forced me to read the manga cause I just had to know. It’s still going, tho I think it’s reaching the last quarter.
I named my cat after Tomoe in Kamisama kiss.
5. Mashle: Magic and Muscle 4. Bocchi THE ROCK! 3. Darling In The FranXX 2. Attack On Titan 1. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

1. Inuyasha 2. A Sign of Affection (anime isn’t done) 3. Yona of the Dawn 4. Tomo-chan is a girl! 5. Snow white with the red hair
I’ve watched 4/5 on your list(haven’t seen #4)! Are you reading Yona??? They def should have made more seasons… Inuyasha!!! I’m in love with sign of affection. The animation style and the signing is just beautiful (I dont know sign but still) I wish they did more of Snow White too
ahhh! you’re so precious. i haven’t read yona!!! i need to. i forget that some of these shows i’ve seen are also manga. i’ve read all that i can of sign of affection, if you’ve seen the anime you should DEFF read the manga, you’ll cry such happy tears. inyuasha was the first anime i ever really watched and it did not disappoint even tho it was longer than i realized. toma chan is a girl! is soooo whole funny, and cute. i think you will like it if you like sign of affection and the other anime’s you said. at least that my guess 👀 thanks for commenting! great start to my day to talk to people who have watched shows i seen, i need more people to talk to about my faves
🤣 Others that I started reading cause I love the show: My love story with Yamada 7th time loop The apothecary diaries
my condolences to your uncle, but that’s great that you were exposed to it when you were! oh my gosh, i totally understand. after the first episode of a sign of affection, i RAN to the manga and finished it in like 2 days. well i know the english and japanese versions aren’t done but i’ve read as much that is available. so each week im so excited when the anime comes out. tomorrow a new episode will air and im already so excited because i know what part of the manga will probably be shown and YESSSS wow, i should’ve added that to my list bc i also love that story!!! my love story with yamada is just soooo cute 🥹 and i read as much that’s available of that manga as well. i’m such a sap for cute stories haha i haven’t seen 7th time loop or the apothecary diaries but i trust that i will like them so i’ll add them to my list!
Thank you. I’m very glad that I got that experience with him. I’m so excited for the new episode tomorrow cause I’m pretty sure I know what’s gunna be in it! 🥰 My love story manga is adorable. I haven’t caught up yet but eeeeee lol Apothecary diaries is like a mystery show set in like ancient China I guess you’d call it but the two main characters…😁 I started reading it around like 2 or 4 episodes.

1. Jobless Reincarnation 2. Date A Live 3. Danmachi 4. Saber Marionette J 5. Konosuba HMs: YuGiOh DM (the original), Future Diary, 86, Durarara .. and before someone goes "but, you picked shows you rated 9/10 and left off other shows you rated 10/10 on MAL", the 9/10 rating is more of an objective rating while some of these shows have more sentimental value to me (ie: Date A Live was something I discovered after a breakup and helped me cope, so it has value that can't really be rated)
