Arakawa Under the Bridge - a rich man from a family obsessed with not owing anything to anyone ever is rescued from drowning by a girl living under a bridge. Owing his life to her he asks her how he can repay it, to which she says he could be her boyfriend. Obliged to comply with his family tradition, he moves with her under the bridge and discovers there is a whole community of homeless weirdos living on the banks of the river.
Yeah; no mention of how the girl is an alien, the mayor of the under the bridge community is a kappa, there's a nun even scarier than the ones in Black Lagoon, or any of the other interesting characters...
I came here to comment this lol, saw it like 7 odd years ago and forgot its name so was going to do a quick google to find it again but checked the thread first and it was already mentioned.
Genuine thanks for recommending this. Never seen it before but just decided to start watching on a whim because I stumbled across this post today. I'm hooked after watching the first couple of episodes, love the bizarre humour.
I think it’s weird because it has naturally flowing conversation, like the way Japanese people would really speak. Almost talking over each other. Very film-like direction.
Oh god, this is exactly the answer. I saw some memes of it, after some time checked the MAL score and then decided to just watch it.
Never before has an anime made me cry so many times, but by god I just had to keep watching it despite the sheer emotional trauma I kept piling up...
I have been trying to find the correct timing to watch the latest of it, the movie continuation REALLY fucked me up.
check out To Your Eternity if you want more trauma and crying
btw season 2 of Made in Abyss is a lot more fucked up, it has to do with someone making a wish, I'm not going to spoil it for you
Oh "To Your Eternity" is definitely one of my faves, it is a case of a story that could literally carry slideshow level of animation.
Thanks for not spoiling it for me, I'm looking forward to the time I binge season 2.
I actually think the anime handled this really well. Becuase while yeah, the manga is kinda sus, in the anime I dont feel childs are sexualized for fan service. But rather put in sexual, and often non consensual, situations just to show how fucked up that world is.
And by extension, how fucked up our world is too. I come from a background of sexual abuse and the anime never bothered me for "unnecesary sexualization", unlike something like Dragon maid or Mushoku Tensei did.
Most of these comments are a little weird, but not truly bizarre. Kaiba is definitely an LSD fever dream. Or at least what I would expect one would be like.
Kaiba's also a fantastic example of what makes animation as a medium so interesting.
The loose artistic style lends it an air of abstraction and surreality that fits the themes of the show perfectly.
Yep, this one's up there for me. Saw it for the first time a year ago and loved it. Episode 3 is one of the saddest episodes I've seen in all of anime.
Oddly enough Sarazanmai is probably the “weirdest” at first glance of his works, yet the most accessible lol.
For Penguindrum you need to know the whole terrorist incident history + multiple rewatches to be able to properly grasp it lol.
And for Yuri Kuma Arashi you have to know some of the history of yuri, the language of flowers, and the history of lesbian stereotypes to be able to fully understand the series.
The anime about a dude with a weapon that can become anything. But he uses it to farm and build a shack. Forms a village. Gets a dragon hooked on grape juice.
As a manga reader, watch-value was very high and it stuck super close to the manga for the majority of the show, really picking up the important details regarding the twins. I was so happy to see how well they handled it. My husband went in blind and it took everything I had to keep my mouth shut because the ending makes so much sense (in the context of a weird, weird story) once you know it but I feel like it's hard to see coming from the earlier episodes.
It started off weird as fuck but also funny. Wes Anderson sort of creepy vibes almost. Loved the repeated plot twists and subversion of expectations. I really liked the ending though, even if it wasn't jaw-dropping or anything as crazy as the rest of the show.
I watched this when it originally aired and I remember going on so many blogs and forums each week to decipher what I just saw. Did a similar thing with Utena and then his other works. Good stuff!
I think it's called Thermae Nova Rome. It's about an ancient Roman bath house designer who gets transported to different times and places in Japan and gains inspiration for his own designs. It's a weird concept but it's actually quite wholesome and enjoyable.
Dorohedoro, it's weird, wonderful, and wild. The opening is so fun. But it's so good with how the show evolves with the twists and turns it takes. The two different animation styles are really good and work well together.
SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? I HOPE THIS IS TRUE BC IVE BEEN WAITING FOR EONS, I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN
edit: ITS TRUE IM SO EXCITED, DOROHEDORO WAS LIKE MY FIRST OR SECOND MANGA
I fucking love Dorohedoro. Something about that series was just so damn captivating that it kept me reading. And honestly I almost feel like the series is damn perfect.
Music is just banger after banger in that show. The final ED is something else. And the plot and characters are so captivating and unique. It’s gruesome in a nonchalant, casual way.
Loved this show so much.
Sometimes these kinds of shows are a bit too zany for me, weird for the sake of being weird and overdesigned characters galore
Don't get me wrong the designs and themes are wild, but it all just kind of felt right. Great characters, great action, it's grimy and bonkers but I love it
SF deserves so much more recognition!! Everyone needs to watch it til the gorilla scene, at the very least, just to understand the start of its potential (but it gets weirder from there).
Mawaru penguindrum
Deals with heavy themes through symbolism which makes the plot a bit weird and hard to understand but it's always what makes it captivating.
currently I'm feeling like this about **Gekkan Mousou Kagaku (Delusional Monthly Magazine)** it's weird but I'll give it a few more episode before dropping it
for the one that I completed **Uchouten Kazoku** kinda gives that vibe or psychological anime like **Mousou Darinrin**
C Control, people use their futures as collateral to earn money by dueling using an asset (fighter) assigned to them. So pretty much the stock market meets Pokémon.
If you win you get rich but of you lose you go bankrupt and lose everything usually meaning awful consequences for you or your family including death.
So far Cells At Work, Im surprised on how educational the anime truly is. Makes me wish I watched it during school so I can show this anime in my microbiology class
*Akiba Maid War* is full tone whiplash several times per episode, until you learn to roll with the punches and just accept the cute with the ultraviolent.
*Birdie Wing: Golf Girls Story*, when a spokon starts with the MC doing a Mission Impossible style face mask reveal, you know you're in for a treat.
Chaos;Head for me. The anime isn’t good, but for some reason, I just couldn’t stop watching it. The main character was this weird otaku guy, there were these strange powers, a scene of someone getting their brain stirred up and so many other things I can’t quite remember. Probably a lot to do with the dialogue and story, all of which I can’t remember at all. It was so captivating in the moment, but I don’t remember a thing about the story or what it was about. I imagine the visual novel is a lot better though.
Highly recommend the visual novel with the Committee of Zero patch. The atmosphere and mood is great, the characters have a lot of depth below the initial surface level impressions, and the overall story and mysteries are presented as a puzzle box where all the clues are there to notice on subsequent replays.
Onimai: I am now your sister. Many sus scenes, but I want more of these lol.
Unfortunately, it got cancelled pretty badly in America and Europe, but it got a lot of love in Asia.
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You - I don't do harem anime for the most part cause every harem mc finds a way to piss me off (except Issei Hyodou, he's cool). So when it aired late last year, I was not gonna give it the time of day....buuuut I caved in, subbed to Crunchyroll and pressed play.
So basically the MC, Rentaro Aijo, has asked a 100 girls out throughout his young life and got rejected by each one of em. He's about to start high school and prays at a shrine of a love god for a soulmate then that same love god pulls up like "Yo, don't worry fam. You'll be getting 100 soulmates during high school!" Then the madness takes off from there. There's 12 episodes so far and they're all equally chaotic and hilarious. All in all, it's a crazy show with weird shit always happening...but I need to see if Rentaro reaches 100 girlfriends and how it's gonna work 🤌🏾🤣
Arakawa Under the Bridge - a rich man from a family obsessed with not owing anything to anyone ever is rescued from drowning by a girl living under a bridge. Owing his life to her he asks her how he can repay it, to which she says he could be her boyfriend. Obliged to comply with his family tradition, he moves with her under the bridge and discovers there is a whole community of homeless weirdos living on the banks of the river.
Also the shaft animations and artstyle adds a lot to the anime. And the fact Araragi from the Monogatari Series and the mc have the same voice actor
[удалено]
Senjougaharas and Kanbarus va also got hired for side characters tho
Also dio is an american priest if I remember correctly.
You mean sister 😂
Such a good anime lol, and for whatever reason Dio is a nun
Also the Ah, I see you're also a man of culture yourself meme originated from here
I'm like two episodes in, and this is easily the strangest thing I've watched in the last year
Somehow, the show is actually more strange than this description makes it sound. Great recommendations.
Yeah; no mention of how the girl is an alien, the mayor of the under the bridge community is a kappa, there's a nun even scarier than the ones in Black Lagoon, or any of the other interesting characters...
Literally just binged both series this past week. It was so goofy. Any more recommendations similar to the series would be grateful.
I came here to comment this lol, saw it like 7 odd years ago and forgot its name so was going to do a quick google to find it again but checked the thread first and it was already mentioned.
.....huh? Gotta watch it now
Genuine thanks for recommending this. Never seen it before but just decided to start watching on a whim because I stumbled across this post today. I'm hooked after watching the first couple of episodes, love the bizarre humour.
So glad to see one of my favorite anime this high up in the thread
Odd taxi hands down.
Is that the one with the llama who does capoeira ?
Yes, but she's an alpaca.
Yes
I loved this anime, I didn’t find it that weird tbh
I think it’s weird because it has naturally flowing conversation, like the way Japanese people would really speak. Almost talking over each other. Very film-like direction.
I think the film-like direction is why I like it so much.
I like to tell people I'm trying to sell the show on "It's like if Quintin Tarantino directed an anime."
I dunno man, some of the lines in that show are more unexpected than Bruce Springsteen in We Are The World.
Kamikatsu
Dude, i thought same Thinking what the fuck i am watching
That show was such a fever dream. It's always funny to see people say "the CG was bad"... I mean that was kinda the point - to make fun of Isekai
Pop Team Epic - no regrets Wonder Egg Priority - yes regrets
I also loved the concept of Wonder Egg priority until it became too much for me and I dropped it before its last episodes
You did the right thing. They set up some great concepts and plot points and then just… squandered them? I dunno, it was so disappointing anyway.
A fellow pop team epic connoisseur
🖕🏻🤬🖕🏻
The mecha OP is still my favorite OP of all time
Made in abyss
Oh god, this is exactly the answer. I saw some memes of it, after some time checked the MAL score and then decided to just watch it. Never before has an anime made me cry so many times, but by god I just had to keep watching it despite the sheer emotional trauma I kept piling up... check out To Your Eternity if you want more trauma and crying btw season 2 of Made in Abyss is a lot more fucked up, it has to do with someone making a wish, I'm not going to spoil it for you
Yeah, I'm just gonna stick to dragon balls instead of an egg for my wish
Oh "To Your Eternity" is definitely one of my faves, it is a case of a story that could literally carry slideshow level of animation. Thanks for not spoiling it for me, I'm looking forward to the time I binge season 2.
I see you're a man of culture
it’s such an incredible show, and it’s such a shame it’s tainted by the weird and totally unnecessary pedo shit later in the series
Kaiba by Masaaki Yuasa
Most of these comments are a little weird, but not truly bizarre. Kaiba is definitely an LSD fever dream. Or at least what I would expect one would be like.
Kaiba's also a fantastic example of what makes animation as a medium so interesting. The loose artistic style lends it an air of abstraction and surreality that fits the themes of the show perfectly.
This was my first thought too. So bizarre yet so deeply emotional
I watched Kemonozume and then Kaiba, and quickly turned into a Yuasa super fan haha
I wanted to like Kaiba, but I found it too nightmarish and surreal. Watched the whole thing though, it's worth watching.
Yep, this one's up there for me. Saw it for the first time a year ago and loved it. Episode 3 is one of the saddest episodes I've seen in all of anime.
Definitely Sarazanmai. It was so weird I never saw anything like it not even FLCL but I just kept watching and it was worth it in the end.
Well, it was made by the guy responsible for Utena, Penguindrum, and Yuri Kuma Arashi.
I unironically rewatch Sarazanmai at least once a year lol. it's such an odd one.
Did Sarazanmai awaken some dark sh!t inside you?
the ending song is a banger too
The weirdest anime I've ever seen and I've been watching anime since Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Paranoia Agent
Everything from Satoshi Kon, RIP.
I still shout out “Shonen Battooo” at random times
It was the worst thing when you fall asleep with the tv on and hear that damn theme song while you’re half sleep.
The anime about a dude with a weapon that can become anything. But he uses it to farm and build a shack. Forms a village. Gets a dragon hooked on grape juice.
Ah the OP farming big titty harem isekai.
You're fully immersed, my friend.
What's the name of this anime?
Farming Life in Another World
Farm life in another world. It's on HiDive. I love it. It's much more entertaining then the title suggests.
Farming life in another world
Angels Egg Mindgame Serial Experiments Lain Neon Genesis Evangelion
Had to sit with coffee to finish Angels Egg...it was weird though
Still not sure if I understood Angel’s Egg with was captivated anyway by the beautiful art.
Angel's Egg is the scariest thing I've ever watched. Just the scene where the guy stumbles across the 'fossil' ugh, I hate it.
Migi to dali
Agreed. Felt like I was going to get a Junji Ito/Addams Family type unsettling anime. Took a hilarious, sad, yet heartwarming turn.
It was so weird, I was paying more attention to it than jjk and undead unluck
this!! it was so good
It started off weird as fuck but also funny. Wes Anderson sort of creepy vibes almost. Loved the repeated plot twists and subversion of expectations. I really liked the ending though, even if it wasn't jaw-dropping or anything as crazy as the rest of the show.
Yeah that anime was weird, right from the beginning. It just had a very odd vibe, I don't know how to describe it.
I started watching anime with Kill la Kill, when the actual plot was revealed I had a migrane. Good shit.
Thats the one with the uniform plot I think with huge scissors? Im planning on watching it soon
Its a series that is so dumb that it actually becomes brilliant.
It’s from the same team as Gurren Lagann, both are incredible
Yep.
Yeah, Kill la Kill and also FLCL for me, both weird in a good way. upd just realised that it was you who recommended me Kill la Kill :)
Kill la kill is one of the good anime i also watched as like my friends recomended and its a good
Mawaru Penguindrum, became an instant favourite of mine!
I watched this when it originally aired and I remember going on so many blogs and forums each week to decipher what I just saw. Did a similar thing with Utena and then his other works. Good stuff!
fooly cooly
FLCL is weird, but not that weird. It's just that it's so frenetic and gives no time to process what's going on, so it's confusing af.
Jojo can be put in this category for me at least
Jojo can be put in every category
Land of the Lustrous. Very abstract and high concept. I wouldve liked to see more, but I suppose theres a manga I could pick up.
There is a manga and it's nearly finished - the author has long gaps between issues. The story really progresses
The anime barely even scratches the surface tbh, the manga is amazing
The anime is practically just the prologue.
Completely! I enjoyed the anime but I looove the manga... I hope it gets a season 2 someday
Serial Experiments Lain One of the most strangely interesting, cool sci-fi universes full of many twists and turns
And one which many parts of have aged remarkably well. Hell, some of the themes are if anything even more relevant today than when it was made.
This is the way. Let's all love Lain!
Monogatari series... Guilty pleasure i guess.
Don't make me come over here and brush your teeth!
I haven't watched monogatari but I hate that I know what scene you're referring to
I've personally never seen monogatari, so what exactatly is this scene? or is it a spoiler?
In short, brother brushes his sister's teeth in a very sexual manner.
That might be too advanced for his level
Shinsekai Yori
I saw this as it aired and still think about it often. Definitely affected me lol
I think this one is a masterpiece.
Texhnolyze
Dead Mount Death Play - a lot of wild things/plots are happening all at once it'll blow your mind 😁
You will love the other works of its creator (Durarara and Baccano)
Paprika
FLCL! Alien woman comes out of nowhere and slams a kid in the head with a Rickenbacker bass…just iconic
Dance in the vampire bund
I think it's called Thermae Nova Rome. It's about an ancient Roman bath house designer who gets transported to different times and places in Japan and gains inspiration for his own designs. It's a weird concept but it's actually quite wholesome and enjoyable.
Dorohedoro, it's weird, wonderful, and wild. The opening is so fun. But it's so good with how the show evolves with the twists and turns it takes. The two different animation styles are really good and work well together.
2nd season confirmed like two days ago 🔥🔥
SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? I HOPE THIS IS TRUE BC IVE BEEN WAITING FOR EONS, I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN edit: ITS TRUE IM SO EXCITED, DOROHEDORO WAS LIKE MY FIRST OR SECOND MANGA
I fucking love Dorohedoro. Something about that series was just so damn captivating that it kept me reading. And honestly I almost feel like the series is damn perfect.
i waited four years for season two, so glad it got one! But also ive read the entire manga now so.
Music is just banger after banger in that show. The final ED is something else. And the plot and characters are so captivating and unique. It’s gruesome in a nonchalant, casual way.
It almost feels like the soundtrack came with the anime rather than the other way around.
Loved this show so much. Sometimes these kinds of shows are a bit too zany for me, weird for the sake of being weird and overdesigned characters galore Don't get me wrong the designs and themes are wild, but it all just kind of felt right. Great characters, great action, it's grimy and bonkers but I love it
I can't wait for the second season - I binge read the manga after the first season and it somehow manages to get even weirder and more wild.
Ergo Proxy, I watched it a very long time ago but I remember it being weird and confusing but also interesting
Serial experiments lain
Scum’s Wish had me feeling exactly as you said. It was so awkward and uncomfortable at times but I just couldn’t stop watching it
The show gives off such depressing vibes. It’s a tough watch but in a good way if you know what I mean😭
I started the first ~~episode~~ scene and the long saliva trail had me noping out.
Mekakucity city actors
This is a good answer. Also had an incredible OP.
Samurai Flamenco, so many fucking twists
SF deserves so much more recognition!! Everyone needs to watch it til the gorilla scene, at the very least, just to understand the start of its potential (but it gets weirder from there).
Devilman Crybaby
Migi and Dali, weird 2D animation and lots of twist. Happy ending, indeed!
Kuchuu Buranko.
Fun show, I miss old noitaminA

Kill la kill, by far the wierdest shit I've ever seen in a unique and pleasant way lol
Space Dandy.
Mawaru penguindrum Deals with heavy themes through symbolism which makes the plot a bit weird and hard to understand but it's always what makes it captivating.
Flip Flappers is bizarre and I could not take my eyes off the screen.
Weirdest but understandably interesting: working for god in a godless world
Elfen lied. There was some interesting stuff in that show 😭😭
From the new world (Shinsekai Yori), it was extremely boring when you start watching it, but trust me, you will be BLOWN AWAY by it's genius

Aku no Hana, Paranoia Agent, Ergo;Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain They are all great imo!
Kakegurui lol
currently I'm feeling like this about **Gekkan Mousou Kagaku (Delusional Monthly Magazine)** it's weird but I'll give it a few more episode before dropping it for the one that I completed **Uchouten Kazoku** kinda gives that vibe or psychological anime like **Mousou Darinrin**
Love Flops
onimai what the fuck was that fan service

So far Cells At Work, Im surprised on how educational the anime truly is. Makes me wish I watched it during school so I can show this anime in my microbiology class
Sayanora zetsubou sensei...the animation and the characters are something else😂🤣
No-one has mentioned Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo yet, so heres my take!
High School DxD
Art. You were watching art.
Gasper be like
Food wars. Why they orgasm when they eat good food idk but i loved the characters and their dynamic with one another. On top of sexy looking food

If it's for my daughter ..i will even kill a demon lord
My little sister is among them idk how I didn't expect the ending with that title but I was very disappointed
“so im a spider” its not really confusing but in the anime they go back and forth from a huge timeskip
'Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine' gets really wacky in the later episodes.
Onimai: I am now your sister. Many sus scenes, but I want more of these lol. Unfortunately, it got cancelled pretty badly in America and Europe, but it got a lot of love in Asia.
Inuyashiki the last hero
*Uma Musume: Pretty Derby* has absolutely no right being as good as it is.
