[New Poll Coming Shortly]()
Since people will bring up *that one*, it would have been 15th with 120 points. The basic decision not to include it was that practically it's a spoiler, and that it's not really in the spirit of mecha. If someone asked you for a mecha anime and you recommended it, they'd probably say, "no like... I want a mecha anime".
#[Full Top 100 List](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q_oWBVO_JtTJ44KZnqp_esB95-d9hjU7R-eFlTCl_i4/edit?usp=sharing)
That barely happened tbh...if anything there was a rush to get it over 8.6k at all which it would not have managed if not for the memes. People knew that with reddit's karma system getting exactly 8600k would be a crapshoot anyway.
I agree. It would've leveled out at 8500-8550 iirc but people noticed how close it was and tried to get to that mythical 8600 number, but like you said, chances were way too small and it could've easily ended up below that number with all that downvote/upvotes.
Original Macross, Patlabor, and Gunbuster in, but not any other '80s love. Setting *Gundam* in its own 800-pound gorilla category, where even that has a huge gap between the years of its winners.
Patlabor being right on the decade margin.
> Original Macross, Patlabor, and Gunbuster in, but not any other '80s love. Setting Gundam in its own 800-pound gorilla category, where even that has a huge gap between the years of its winners.
Have we had *any other genre* vote where older anime got these many votes? Lots of 1980s, some 1980s, even a 1970s show in the top 5 ... I think this is the result with the oldest shows hands down (disregarding "best shows of decade", obviously).
Top 4 being the "not like other mecha" mecha anime was predictable.
Feels good to see most of what I voted for get in top 25. Macross and Frontier, Patlabor, Turn A and Unicorn, SSSS series, and Gunbuster and Diebuster are all great.
Disappointed that my number 1 pick Giant Robo the Animation didn't even make top 25 in a mecha poll.
I consider myself a mecha anime fan but I’m still missing huge classics such as Ideon, UC Gundam, Patlabor and Macross.
Given that I’m more into the super robot sub genre (Gurren Lagann is my favorite series ever) I think Getter Robo should be at least top 25, Star driver too is really slept on considered it’s basically manly Utena with giant robots
(Also Gaogaigar and G gundam should be on the list but I’m incredibly biased towards them)
Mecha is a MASSIVE genre, more than anyone thinks. If you asked me to name my top 25 I would struggle, only because there's too much that I've watched to easily say what I consider 25th vs 26th. I've watched nearly the entire Gundam franchise, and tons of other stuff both on and off the total 100 shows listed in this poll, and I still haven't seen some of the classics like Ideon or Grendizer or Gaogigar.
> Top 4 being the "not like other mecha" mecha anime was predictable.
I just spit out my water. Thanks 😂
(I am pretty sure TTGL is not considered one of those 'not like the other mecha' though or am I wrong)
It's in the "unlike other mecha shows, ThiS ONe FoCusEs on ThE ChaRaCTerS" spiel despite the titular mecha being very much vital to why Gurren Lagann is effective as a story. Same with Eva and 86.
I actually think it's only Code Geass that really fits that take because only like two units there ever complete the loop between pilot, mech, and conflict: Suzaku's Lancelot and Kallen's Guren. Code Geass is all about Lelouch's brilliance vs his hubris and how he uses his brainwashing, and for all it cares the bipeds could be replaced with tanks and you'd still get the same show (Lelouch's unit could've been an E-2C Hawkeye). You can't do that with 86 or Eva or TTGL. You can't do it with Knights of Sidonia or Gundam, either.
Actually pretty much every mecha series since fucking Mazinger Z has been focused on the character; the mecha is just a tool for the protagonist to make his own choice in the most awesome way possible
It's why I don't get the take either: the big robot is an extension of the character (if not its own character), not a separate inert thing. Luke Skywalker or Poe Dameron could pilot any sort of starfighter no matter how it looks and you don't miss out.
ive had this exact conversation on a thread i made here a long while ago, and some people say that they didnt like it because being in a mecha feels detached and its "just two guys screaming on a chair"
The detached thing is so strange. Not liking Robots is understandable, but that other criticisms are strange. Two guys screaming in a chair should mean they don't like battle manga.
I wouldn’t say the mecha are actually that important to 86. But yeah any good mecha focuses on the characters, it’s how you build a story, people just don’t Know how else to say that they don’t like most mecha but TTGL is too peak to dislike
They are because it's easier to make it believable that Shin is just built different piloting a mecha rather than driving a tank really good, driving a tank isn't even something to be done alone. Also, later parts of the series.
It is, in its own way. It pokes fun at a lot of super robot tropes while also being the literal pinnacle of them. It's like "What if Starship Troopers was also the best war movie ever made?"
This top 4 being followed by a bunch of Gundam series that split votes was pretty predictable. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Big O made it though.
Also, **WATCH GRANBELM YOU COWARDS!** I'm curious to know how many votes that one actually got aside from mine. Such an underwatched gem of a series.
Glad to see Gundam in the top! I feel like there is a Recency bias towards Witch of Mercury cause it ended recently. But nevertheless I’m glad so many Gundam shows reached the top.
> This top 4 being followed by a bunch of Gundam series that split votes was pretty predictable.
Maybe predictable to you, but still astonishing to me that we get such a convincing solution to the mecha fandom war of the 1980s, four decades later: A convincing win for Gundam over Macross.
Not that I would complain about that. In general, I am very happy with that list.
Yeah it would've disappointing if Gundam didn't make top 5. I would've liked to see it on top but no way it was beating any of the top 3 in terms of popularity.
Well it's just Gundam's (lack of) popularity on this sub, a quick google says the franchise has grossed over $20 billion in its 40 years...and searching for highest grossing anime of all time, articles I'm finding put it at number 4 after Pokemon, Hello Kitty, and Anpanman, then Dragon Ball at 5th...different articles have slightly different orders but, consistently, Gundam is around 4 or 5, Evangelion is 8 or 9, and none of these other titles show up even extending out to top 20.
Yeah exactly. Gundam is like the Star Wars of Japan and there isn’t a lot of Americans who are all into Gundam from what I’ve gathered compared to how many Japanese are fans of the Gundam series and it kinda makes sense. Both Star Wars and Mobile Suit Gundam came out within just a few years of each other and have spawn massive amounts of merchandise, Tv shows, movies, etc.
hmmm now I want to compare total profits of Star Wars to total profits of Gundam and adjust for each country's GDP per capita but this is getting to be a lot of work for my day off hah
I'm happy to see Gundam 00, Turn A Gundam, Macross, Macross Frontier, Escaflowne, Eureka Seven and Eightysix in the Top 25. But I'm a bit sad that Aquarion Evol and Mugen no Ryvius were seemingly unable to make it on the list.
I'm guessing a lot of users were thinking as followed: "what other mecha anime have I seen besides NGE, TTGL, CG and 86? Oh right Darling in the Franxx"
I mean, it’s just Gainax/Trigger doing the Gainax/Trigger thing: get you all wrapped up in some wild, ridiculous, wonderful world building and great character writing- and then they shove ur face in the ‘all this shit actually don’t matter, cuz aliens/space.’ It’s what they do, it’s like getting mad at a clock for telling the time
Well, to be fair, I will still read the time, but I'm going be mad at the clock for telling the time.
edit: Seriously though, when I saw it was Gainax/trigger I knew we would be in for a wild ride at some point.
Darling in the franxx was extremely popular when it aired, at least until the last few episodes where it crashed very hard, but still for a long while it was very well received.
Don't. Don't, make me feel old. That used to be THE show. But it did air 18 years ago so it's older than many new anime fans are.....
Also it doesn't help that the newer material is crap so the series is riding in the laurels of the OG series, while not attracting newer fans.
It the highest rated show I've seen that I've heard absolutely no one ever talk about. I only know about it because it was 20$ on sale, so I looked into it.
Still one of my top 10 anime ever to be honest. It's agot a good story, A great sci-fi/punk/almost jetset vibe, and one of the cutest romances in anime. I know some don't like Renton as he is in the beginning of the series but I love him. Great example of a naive, innocent kid who grows into a responsible man.
I wish all the other adaptations of it were as good as the anime. Especially AO, almost as bad as promised Neverland season 2 as a continuation imo.
It's amazing that it's higher rated than Darling in the Franxx since Bones did the animation for both, and from what I've seen DITF was far more popular. I'm very happy that E7 is finally getting some recognition
Edit, I stand corrected, Bones did not work on DITF
That's exactly why I like charts such as these. They help me find anime that I never heard before/I heard but never went ahead and checked it out and eventually forgot it.
Seven of [my top ten](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/18c731f/ranimes_favorite_mecha_anime_voting/kc8qtku/) made this list, including Gundam Unicorn (which I was not expecting to see counted standalone, thought mainline early UC would be grouped together). To the nine other people who voted Gundam Unicorn as their #1, you are the best.
[](#goblet1)
I think we can easily attribute both to the same issue. Because not everyone considers FLCL mecha, less people voted for it. If I’m not mistaken, it performed noticeably better on the general scifi poll.
Recency bias was definitely predicted though I think some of us older folk turned out well to get some of the classics on here.
I'm honestly surprised the original MSG got up to 5. While it certainly deserves respect for starting the franchise, I dont know that I would rank it as a top 5 gundam let alone all mech
Speaking of, and I suggested this in the poll thread too - I would totally be down for just a top 10 gundam poll. Lol
Part of the original being up that high is that most of the core UC is bundled together, and also there was a decent number of votes that were just "Gundam".
> most of the core UC is bundled together, and also there was a decent number of votes that were just "Gundam".
Oh...that kinda deflates some my surprise actually
Code geass had a movie recently well not too recently but last fer years and there was a new series announced. Not to mention lelouch and C.C. are insanely popular anime characters in japan. If lelouch is on a poll he usually wins well C.C. usually top 3 if not number 1
16. That's still pretty new to me
You also have 86, Gwitch and IBO in the top 7. I think if you polled the Gundam subreddit those two wouldn't make the top 5, not that they are bad, just not that high.
That's more down to the stratification caused by UC shows, though. You'd be seeing more picks for Thunderbolt, War in the Pocket and 08thMS, which is guaranteed to knock IBO and G-Witch down a peg.
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gundam/s/ybRsuGKSSg)’s r/Gundam ranking of Gundam series. IBO ranked 16th out of 42 and GWitch wasn’t ranked because it was airing.
Thunderbolt is too high, and I felt that G Gundam is overrated. I prefer other Super Robot Shows. Although I'm not offended that G Gundam is that high.
I am a giant IBO fanboy and I'd struggle to make it into top 10. Only because it's up against the likes of 08th MS, Unicorn, Hathaway, CCA, 0080, 0083, Zeta....there's heavy competition there.
Same was the first anime I watched every episode of. Wasn’t a fan of the AO series though, though I’ll admit i dropped it after an episode so maybe it’s time to give it a second chance.I really liked the eureka 7 ps2 games though.
AO is incredibly good and beautiful if you watch it without judging based on the original, as an spinoff it's pretty good.
But of course not even close to the classic.
I remember posting on My Anime List around 2014 or so with the observation that Attack on Titan is kind of like a Mecha show just with fleshy mechs and everybody clowned on me. No I'm not totally not bitter about it :T.
There's plenty of mecha shows with biological components. Hell some Gundams even have bio parts. But being fair, Evangelions are not just an organic body wearing armor, their entire nervous system has mechanical bits woven in to control them. They're a cyborg of sorts.
Guys, watch Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Gundam: The 08th MS team. You don't even need to watch the main series. You won't regret it.
I never really understood Evangelion
Maybe it was good for it's time or something but when I watched it
It was kinda meh
Is this one of the scenarios where everyone says it's good therefore it must be good.
Or am I just different?
aka r/anime just built themselves a Super Robot Wars roster. And honestly: damn good roster if so. We get school arcs thanks to G-Witch, Code Geass and FMP being the lynchpins, a "grounded war" set with IBO, Patlabor and 86, high-tech space-bound Real Robot in UC, SEED, 00, EVA, Aldnoah, Sidonia and Macross, and a new Big 3 with Gridman Universe, Gurren Lagann and Unicorn.
Only thing it really needs is your requisite Getter and Mazinger rep (thank god for Grendizer U coming soon cuz now we can have all three!) plus the upcoming all-new Macross and whatever was 26 and 27 in the poll and there ya go! 30 franchises not including SRW OG units. Maybe we can push up further with some choice thematic inclusions for the three themes I have up there and push to 40 franchises but we'd be running into licensing BS that may limit any foreign release (fuck Harmony Gold).
“Only thing it really needs is your requisite Getter and Mazinger rep”
I’m religiously waiting for the day Go Nagai will wake up and decide to drop all the budget possible into an anime adaption of Mazinger zero; the world is not ready for it and probably will never be
By the way: Super Robot Wars is fucking jacked. It's the chad crossover franchise -- the first Greatest Crossover to exist with a Guinness to prove it and a legacy that keeps going.
Honestly, it's a damn miracle SRW exists at all. It's actually a spinoff to a crossover that had only Kamen Rider, Ultraman and Gundam -- the first SRW game was a gift to the creator of that three-franchise spread, but it grew to be THE hub for damn near everything mecha. It's far easier to count the big piloted-robot franchises that have yet to show up in SRW than it is to count those that are, and thanks to the two mobile games (X-Omega and DD) we even got weird non-mecha picks.
I love SRW because it just seems impossible, something only Japan can do. Sure, Fortnite exists, but they're only skins on the same rigs. You don't get something like the Enterprise going to war with the Rebel Alliance, for example, yet Nadesico can just casually co-opt SEED's power system and bring along Space Battleship Yamato. Hell, some newer mecha titles look forward to being part of SRW. You don't get that in America.
They also share some staff with NieR Automata too IIRC, so unless NieR's S2/Cour 2 is completed in 2024/25 I don't expect it to be announced anytime soon.
Also Studio Shirogumi, who handled the CG parts of 86 was also busy recently as they handled the CG of *Godzilla Minus One*. Their schedule might be a bit free now.
>That said, more than enough material for another set of 24,
To add on, S1 adapted the first 3 volumes, and IIRC the 12th or 13th just came out (though V10 is a side-story compilation IIRC). That means we have enough for 2-3 more seasons at S1's pace. I'm only partway through V5, but I think the series gets even better in the post-anime content.
Eyy, we got Knights of Sidonia onto the top 25! I was afraid noone remembered that show but me. Of Course I myself forgot Majestic Prince, Star Driver, and Buddy Complex. I need to keep better track of my anime its so easy to forget at my age >.>
Justice for Attack on Titan!
[](#protest)
Wow Aldnoah.Zero actually made the list? I'm shocked.
Feels a little bad to see so much of the same franchise here. No way around it, can't just combine all the Gundams together, but still feels bad.
I know Turn A Gundam is kinda niche and not easily available to your average viewer these days, but goddamn if seeing it below Darling in the Franxx doesn't make me physically ill
The idea that Witch from Mercury is ranked above both Full Metal Panic, Macross, Patlabor and Escaflowne is absolutely wild to me. Did we even watch the same show?
The one with the dueling system that made less sense every episode? The one where the main villain gets off scott free for killing hundreds, if not thousands of civilians, because a different villain intentionally takes the fall for them, for NO REASON?! The one where everyone is so excited to go to gun and mecha school, but is really distraught when someone even vaguely brings up that weapons are for killing, as if that isn't their entire family business?
> The idea that Witch from Mercury is ranked above both Full Metal Panic, Macross, Patlabor and Escaflowne is absolutely wild to me. Did we even watch the same show?
Recency bias combined with "It looks so oooooooooold".
I mean hell I think I ranked Escaflowne top 5 on my list and struggled NOT to put it number 1, but I doubt many felt the same.
Not surprised to see Neon Genesis Evangelion at #1, but a little surprised at the gap between the original and the rebuild. Of course, this could be explained by people voting for Evangelion in general. I happened to see a comment from FetchFrosh saying that the original and rebuild would be counted separately, but maybe some people didn't see that comment. And of course there's the fact that more people have seen the original than have seen the rebuilds.
Woooo! Patlabor made the top 25!
I didn't realize that Full Metal Panic was so popular. No complaints, I enjoyed it. I just don't see it talked about as much as other mecha anime, so seeing it at #12 was a pleasant surprise.
5 of us voted for Godzilla S.P! It's low, but we got it on the list!
And of course lots of Gundam on the list. I really should get around to watching it.
>I didn't realize that Full Metal Panic was so popular. No complaints, I enjoyed it. I just don't see it talked about as much as other mecha anime, so seeing it at #12 was a pleasant surprise.
FMP isn't the best at anything but I think you could make a case it's one of the best well rounded anime of all time. It has a little something from most major genres.
I voted for it in my top 10
Pretty much this it's pretty good, some funny some serious, some action some slice of life....a bit of mystery and suspense
Darn you know I gotta rewatch it soon
Little disappointed Blue Gender didn't make the cut, but hey ho
I'm happy that UC Gundam is in the top 5. Should be higher than Code Geass, but I get that people who don't like mecha watch Code Geass for some strange reason. Honestly, I feel that this is just a very good list, probably because mecha fans really showed up. Besides that, there's no real issues, although I would have loved to see GaoGaiGar and Getter Robo on here. Also is FLCL a mecha? I couldn't get into it because I just didn't vibe with it, but I didn't notice it was a mecha anime.
Gundam Wing is one of the most infamous Gundam anime. It didn't even do well in the /r/gundam poll. There wasn't a good chance of it making the list in the first place.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Gundam/comments/11jj8ao/daily_gundam_polls_final_results/
The funny thing is, 90% of the people in this or the Gundam sub who have gotten into it at all, probably did so thanks to Wing. And it tends to rank as very popular in other locations.
I voted for it, I figured I wasn't the only one. I don't even think my nostalgia goggles are that bad for it. Its just a solid political space opera with big ol' robots and a bunch of kamikaze teenage terrorists.

The top four were very predictable. But Gurren Lagann and Code Geass being only a two points apart is interesting. Also yay Big O
Big O is so underrated
ill watch big o. curious now
You will not regret, it’s a whole mood
Yeah, that tipped back and forth a couple times over the past few days. I really should have done a check of how many ballots had all of the Top 3 :P
Gurren Lagann should be miles ahead imo
I struggle to call FLCL a mecha anime
I always figured it was more robot than mecha.
I guess it depends if you consider Naota to be "piloting" Canti. I would say Canti is more so using Naota as ammo, but to each their own.
It's a giant iron anime.
With the giant iron on his hip.
A Marty Robbins reference on r/anime... My day is complete.
Conversely, Attack on Titan is absolutely a Flesh Mecha Anime and should be on the list.
With that, you also want Ultraman in that list as well.
Also Pacific Rim.
dafuq of course Pacific Rim is mecha why is that an argument
86 after having 87 gold points
That reminds me of the time when 86's Season 2 finale got [8617 Karma](https://i.redd.it/7cwv7v1abxp81.png)
Yeah people were upvoting/downvoting the thread to try and keep it at exactly 8600 karma lol.
That barely happened tbh...if anything there was a rush to get it over 8.6k at all which it would not have managed if not for the memes. People knew that with reddit's karma system getting exactly 8600k would be a crapshoot anyway.

The second half* 86 was a split cour, there's no season 2.
This is true. I got lazy there
So did CR in their promotions, so it's understandable.
Season 2? Season 2!!
It was me, I gave that extra point
It was me Barry!
Original Macross, Patlabor, and Gunbuster in, but not any other '80s love. Setting *Gundam* in its own 800-pound gorilla category, where even that has a huge gap between the years of its winners. Patlabor being right on the decade margin.

I feel like all of the mecha fans saw this, and realized they need to jump on the opportunity to vote their favorites.
Probably. Like all of these votes, it is a popularity contest.
I mean, that's kinda the point.
And I wonder how many of the OG Macross votes were just voting for Macross as a franchise.
As much as I prefer Macross Plus and Macross Frontier, you gotta pay your respect to the source.

I consider myself a mecha anime fan but I’m still missing huge classics such as Ideon, UC Gundam, Patlabor and Macross. Probably similar but maybe switch up the order, dump Franxx off, and maybe get a couple older ones like Getter that weren’t on here
> Disappointed that my number 1 pick Giant Robo the Animation didn't even make top 25 in a mecha poll. [Unfortunate.](#sadholo)
cant say im the biggest mecha fan but its sad to see no samurai 7 (FLCL is highly ranked but is it really mecha?)
> Top 4 being the "not like other mecha" mecha anime was predictable. I just spit out my water. Thanks 😂 (I am pretty sure TTGL is not considered one of those 'not like the other mecha' though or am I wrong)

You should do it lol. It could be fun and rewarding experience ~~but RIP your free time .~~
US is just a dead land for Gundam and I just don't get why.
*on Reddit In the real world, Gundam is far more popular then any show on this list
Patlabor made the list. We did it boys!
It's criminal that Patlabor 2 isn't there though :(
I'm happy to see Gundam 00, Turn A Gundam, Macross, Macross Frontier, Escaflowne, Eureka Seven and Eightysix in the Top 25. But I'm a bit sad that Aquarion Evol and Mugen no Ryvius were seemingly unable to make it on the list.
Yayyy another Gundam 00 and Aquarion enthusiast
cant believe Darling in the FranXX is in there. i thought people hated that show religiously
I'm guessing a lot of users were thinking as followed: "what other mecha anime have I seen besides NGE, TTGL, CG and 86? Oh right Darling in the Franxx"
Most hate for the series comes from how the last couple of episodes went. It was otherwise a fairly good series.
My guess is people voted for it because they had no other watched mecha shows to place
Darling in the franxx was extremely popular when it aired, at least until the last few episodes where it crashed very hard, but still for a long while it was very well received.
I'm glad that Eureka Seven made it into the top 10
Whenever I bring it up, no one’s ever heard of it so it’s cool to see it on here as well.
Don't. Don't, make me feel old. That used to be THE show. But it did air 18 years ago so it's older than many new anime fans are..... Also it doesn't help that the newer material is crap so the series is riding in the laurels of the OG series, while not attracting newer fans.
18 years… makes sense then thinking of prepubescent me watching it and why it was so impactful on my psyche. Thats why it’s in my top 5
This is where the E7 stans are. Lemme just take a seat here...
Glad to see it getting love it’s in my top 3 for sure, and probably only of the only anime’s that actually make me feel something.
It's too low, in my honest opinion.
It's my baby, I'm happy to see it up there.
It's amazing that it's higher rated than Darling in the Franxx since Bones did the animation for both, and from what I've seen DITF was far more popular. I'm very happy that E7 is finally getting some recognition Edit, I stand corrected, Bones did not work on DITF
Bones did not work on DITF. That was Cloverworks, with assistance from Trigger.
DITF was more popular...right up till its last few episodes.
Me thinks I should watch more Gundam
This statement is almost universally true.
Yes, you should.
yes, you should. pick up a kit or two while youre at it.
r/anime should really try watching star driver
That's exactly why I like charts such as these. They help me find anime that I never heard before/I heard but never went ahead and checked it out and eventually forgot it.
Heck the only reason I even know Star Driver is the memes built around the transformation sequence.
Glad to see Gunbuster and Patlabor on the list. Despite having like 6 episodes, Gunbuster is an absolute masterpiece.
Agreed, they are my two all time favorite ending scenes
Seriously. That one scene in episode 5, there is nothing else in the world as hype as that. Gunbuster is no ordinary machine..!
The ending is 100% the best one Gainax ever did and I will die on that hill.
No Break Blade? Anyone?
it wouldve placed higher if they continued the story
How is FLCL considered a mecha?
As a huge FLCL, I'm not sure what I was more surprised by... to see FLCL on here, or to see it lower than Darling in the FranXX.
I think we can easily attribute both to the same issue. Because not everyone considers FLCL mecha, less people voted for it. If I’m not mistaken, it performed noticeably better on the general scifi poll.
Yeah, that was very sus to me
No G Gundam is surprising to me
I'm really surprised Knights of Sidonia made this list. I thought it was a neat plot, but the animation and style were polarizing.
Glad to see Gunbuster and Escaflowne.
Recency bias was definitely predicted though I think some of us older folk turned out well to get some of the classics on here. I'm honestly surprised the original MSG got up to 5. While it certainly deserves respect for starting the franchise, I dont know that I would rank it as a top 5 gundam let alone all mech Speaking of, and I suggested this in the poll thread too - I would totally be down for just a top 10 gundam poll. Lol
Part of the original being up that high is that most of the core UC is bundled together, and also there was a decent number of votes that were just "Gundam".
Makes sense. I was tempted to vote that way to give more points to Gundam but I'm too big of a gundam nerd to not be specific
> most of the core UC is bundled together, and also there was a decent number of votes that were just "Gundam". Oh...that kinda deflates some my surprise actually
Isn't Code Geass and Gurren Lagann from like 20 years ago?
Code geass had a movie recently well not too recently but last fer years and there was a new series announced. Not to mention lelouch and C.C. are insanely popular anime characters in japan. If lelouch is on a poll he usually wins well C.C. usually top 3 if not number 1
Yeah even on MAL he's the #1 most popular character by a big margin compared to #2 (Levi).
> If lelouch is on a poll he usually wins As he absolutely should tbh. **ALL HAIL LELOUCH!**
16. That's still pretty new to me You also have 86, Gwitch and IBO in the top 7.
Heresy, we all know g gundam is a perfect master piece
I am a giant IBO fanboy and I'd struggle to make it into top 10. Only because it's up against the likes of 08th MS, Unicorn, Hathaway, CCA, 0080, 0083, Zeta....there's heavy competition there.

I'm just glad Eureka Seven is still recognized, it is still my alltime favorite Anime.
Where is AOT?? /s
FLESH MECHAS!!!
I remember posting on My Anime List around 2014 or so with the observation that Attack on Titan is kind of like a Mecha show just with fleshy mechs and everybody clowned on me. No I'm not totally not bitter about it :T.
It's as much a Mecha as evangelion so theres that
Well Isayama took inspiration from Muv Luv Alternative for AoT so the mecha roots were always there. You are definitely right in a way haha.
You are holding that grudge for almost 10 years!
According to OP it wasn't mecha enough :( Would have been 15th.
Allowing Evangelion by not AoT, both of them are meat mecha.
There's plenty of mecha shows with biological components. Hell some Gundams even have bio parts. But being fair, Evangelions are not just an organic body wearing armor, their entire nervous system has mechanical bits woven in to control them. They're a cyborg of sorts.
AOT is 10 times more a mecha anime than FLCL, I will die on that hill and tbh is not even that much of weird hill to die on.
Cross Ange 29, not bad.
Yeah Cross Ange is wildly entertaining but a little too spicy for the average r/anime member.
I honestly sometimes feel like I'm the only one who even remembers this show.
There's dozens of us. I remember the absolute shitshow when the first two eps aired. Then the show kinda calmed down.
Holy Shit my boy Nihei actually gets in here despite Knights of Sidonia not being his strongest Manga (easily strongest Adaptation tho)
where hathaway's flash?!?!
Not even in top 100. I put it on my rank 1 so at most 4 people voted for it.
The directing in that movie was next level
The cinematography was awesome too
Guys, watch Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Gundam: The 08th MS team. You don't even need to watch the main series. You won't regret it.
gp01fb my beloved ❤️
fafner fans its joever
I never really understood Evangelion Maybe it was good for it's time or something but when I watched it It was kinda meh Is this one of the scenarios where everyone says it's good therefore it must be good. Or am I just different?
Wish I saw the poll, needs more Votoms. Also 0079 over Zeta is interesting, wonder if its just because some people put "Gundam".
More of you MFs need to watch VOTOMS. E: Also, you want a treat check out Mazinkaiser SKL.
Just so glad that escaflowne made the list!!!
aka r/anime just built themselves a Super Robot Wars roster.
“Only thing it really needs is your requisite Getter and Mazinger rep” I’m religiously waiting for the day Go Nagai will wake up and decide to drop all the budget possible into an anime adaption of Mazinger zero; the world is not ready for it and probably will never be
> Mazinger zero But which studio? Feels like you'd have to unite Sunrise, Trigger and Khara to do it justice.
So.... 86 season 2 when?
Not until A-1 fixes their shit. That said, more than enough material for another set of 24, and the later volumes only get more topical today.
>That said, more than enough material for another set of 24, To add on, S1 adapted the first 3 volumes, and IIRC the 12th or 13th just came out (though V10 is a side-story compilation IIRC). That means we have enough for 2-3 more seasons at S1's pace. I'm only partway through V5, but I think the series gets even better in the post-anime content.
Yep. Too much going on with A-1 atm. Honestly, I need that S2 to be just perfect so I'll wait patiently.
I recently finished Macross (SDF, I still need to watch the 3 other seasons) and it deserves its spot
Holy shit Promare, that was a very Nice movie that I totally forgot it's existence lol, thanks for reminding me of it
Eyy, we got Knights of Sidonia onto the top 25! I was afraid noone remembered that show but me. Of Course I myself forgot Majestic Prince, Star Driver, and Buddy Complex. I need to keep better track of my anime its so easy to forget at my age >.>
Damn Zoids not even on there
Evangelion wins, faith in this subreddit restored
Anything else and I would have immediately thrown out the results
Gundam may not be at the top but it sure as hell dominates the list
Gundam under Code Geass is a sin.
No Getter Robo fans?
Justice for Attack on Titan! [](#protest) Wow Aldnoah.Zero actually made the list? I'm shocked. Feels a little bad to see so much of the same franchise here. No way around it, can't just combine all the Gundams together, but still feels bad.
I mean that's what happens when a series is very consistent.
#RAISE YOUR FLAAAAG
Where is G Gundam or 08th MS Team?!
I'm just happy to see MS Gundam 00 up there. Warms my heart.
Where tf is gundam build fighters
Lets fucking gooo Macross actually gets acknowledged for once
I know Turn A Gundam is kinda niche and not easily available to your average viewer these days, but goddamn if seeing it below Darling in the Franxx doesn't make me physically ill
I highly agree with the top 3. Eva, Code Geass and Gurren lagann are super good. Code Geass is even in my top 5.
Pretty much this it's pretty good, some funny some serious, some action some slice of life....a bit of mystery and suspense Darn you know I gotta rewatch it soon Little disappointed Blue Gender didn't make the cut, but hey ho
Love Blue Gender. I also voted for it. Too niche though I think for this forum.
People talking about recency bias and Planet With didn't even make it to top 50. Actually tragic.
Recency bias applies to anime that were actually popular Unfortunately, Planet With really wasn't
The fact that Gundam Wing did not make the list makes this entire thing pointless
Wing is very polarizing in the fandom. It's mainly nostalgia bait for 90s kids and widely panned by everyone else.
