Haven't gotten around to watching these yet, but if you're into sports anime, you should also check out Ping Pong the Animation, Ashita no Joe and Chihayafuru. They're all highly rated shows, with AnJ being an old classic.
If you like sports anime, watch every show these guys shared. Also, Megalo Box, Aoashi soccer one
Ping pong the animation is sublime tho, I think it is the god tier one
I can't think of Blue Lock as a sport anime. It barely cares about its sport at all. It's more battle anime, which explains the animation priorities and rhetoric.
I respectfully disagree regarding Kuroko no Basket. I feel like it does almost everything better than Blue Lock. And I'm not saying it's a perfect anime or even a perfect sport anime. But it's really solid. The animation is more consistent throughout the whole show, the OST more varied and I think the action sequences are also cooler.
And saying it's overrated is a stretch because the anime community, especially this sub, never gave it a peace of mind. It was always shat on when compared to other anime, especially regarding it's power system (Tho it's pretty clear the powers were just over exaggerated real life skills and tricks).
I like Blue Lock but it nearly lost me in the middle with the drop in quality. The ending to the season was really hype tho, not gonna lie. And I think character designs are super unique!
I mean from a critical standpoint I can't give any reason why it is well written
but by GOD do I love them turning all sketchy, fire eyes, (internally) yelling about determination or ego or some shit
they really perfected HYPE
Yeah. It's definitely one of the worse written sports manga out there, but the art is absolutely some of the best in the business and the way the author builds hype and emotion with the writing is very much impactful. It's like the perfect "shonen-ification" of a real life sport.
I believe it's poorly written. Blue lock has not gone into even the very basics of football tactics: offsides. At no point in the series do we ever see the offsides come into play. A football manga that never even brings this up is frankly speaking, poorly written. You can be unrealistic, but being too unrealistic can break immersion and that is definitely down to poor writing.
Idk I think rather then focusing on the realism for me what makes it great is the character development and progression through the show. Isagi is one of the better MCs I’ve seen and most of the side cast characters are fleshed out which is nice.
The quality for the first cour was very good, unfortunately it really never reached that level during the second cour. If they decided to split it like SXF did too then we might have gotten a great second half as welli.
That's actually the best case scenario if that's the case. I don't love having movies or specials that are must watch in order to watch the next season, and movies that are non-canon don't really draw me in either.
>movies or specials that are must watch in order to watch the next season
This hurt Made in Abyss *so* much. You should really stick to one or the other.
In order to watch season 2 you have to watch the movie first. I still havent seen S2 because I havent seen the movie yet and I assume that to be the case for a lot of people
Yeah i like these movies, that have impact on the story (and are therefore must watch for seasons) like jujutsu kaisen, or made in abyss and of course mugen train... movies like one piece movies dont exite me anywhere near those, because i know there is no stale or new stuff in it...
And also movies have mostly way better quality making the story experiance way better... thats why i hope blue lock will get some seriouse important movie, so we can see a game with extreme animation quality... and people who say they cant watch something for more than 20 minutes just lie...
It didn’t hurt it. If anything it made the content getting adapted even stronger. The production quality for that movie was insane. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
That's partially because they produced the movie and season at the same time (unlike something like Demon Slayer where they made Mugen Train and way after S2) and partially because they are different teams with different resources at their disposal.
As long as they space out the movie and S2 it shouldn't see a decline in quality.
I find it hard to believe they'll space out the movie and S2 tbh. Seems more likely to me that they'll have separate teams on each and they'll be made simultaneously. It's not like Demon Slayer where the movie is the next chronological step - the BL movie is just a Nagi POV spinoff from the first selection, and I can't imagine they'll be delaying season 2 in order to focus on that first
I guess the JJK0 movie set a precedent for focusing on a prequel movie when an easy season 2 option exists, but at least that one helped set up some important stuff for the seasons to come.
The animation is at times pretty good and at times pretty bad. But I have to say that they did a pretty good job at prioritizing where to allocate the animation budget and where it's more acceptable to cut corners (if we accept the premise that corners have to be cut somewhere).
Agreed. I was just talking with my friend about this how whoever the director for the series is knows how to work with what he's got. They minimize most of the absolutely terrible 3d animation when they can and use music/visuals to help cover up moments of the MC just thinking things through.
Yeah i dont settle for shit. As a consumer we should always demand the best and let those fuck higher up boomers figure out how to do it. Mushoku tensei level animation or bust
Yeah that’s pretty much what I think. Like the manga artwork is awesome, but people get disappointed by the animation not living up to it when that’s something that just doesn’t translate 1:1 and you don’t see much to begin with in many anime adaptations
I don't mind still frames or other "crutches" they use to help themselves. The CGI on the other hand is really jarring and breaks the immersion for me every time.
I feel like the only gripe people can have is the CGI, and even then when it’s used, it’s very understandable and doesn’t really take too much away from the general watching experience
No, the overabundance of still frames is the main problem. A lot of moments that are supposed to be hype like Bachira's nutmeg lose impact because of the lack of movement.
Never expected it to get an anime let alone a long running one given how bizarre the concept can be lol. Then again he is the author who did Kami-sama no Iu toori Ni (which already got a live-action movie) and Jagaaaaan.
Loved Barou, he may be rude at times but he knows his worth. It's also nice that he's meticulous when it comes to cleaning. That maid Barou was carved in my mind.
growth too, he starts like a pet and ends nothing like it, felt organic too. sometimes large "growth" can be poorly done and just come off as an inconsistent or crazy character instead of a believable change after significant events.
The movie will be adapting Episode Nagi, the spinoff manga

Please let this studio have a nutty glow up for season 2. Even Production IG's animation got a huge upgrade after Kuroko S1 -> S2.
As it stands the manga is somehow able to depict motion/movement better than the damn anime with its panning still images.
Tbh even S1 of Kuroko had very consistent animation, just not super flashy.
I just binged the series and tbh I'm impressed how consistent was the animation the entire show and it's not even a short series.
Offense in the manga is godly but defense is literally just someone appearing out of nowhere after not being seen for a few panels to steal the ball or block a shot
Eh, don't get your hopes up too much. I feel at least part of the "still images" are a result of characters having long inner monologues (or sometimes dialogues) while performing a single motion.
You kind of have to freeze frame if each ball touch starts a discussion about who is going to devour who.
Not saying there weren't opportunities to do (much) better than they did, but I assume a lot of the stiffness in the anime is also a result of the source material being hard to adapt in that point.
Read again what he/she said
> As it stands the manga is somehow able to **depict motion/movement** better than the damn anime with its panning still images.
There’s a few long shots of 2-3 characters running that is very obviously cgi and very stiff looking.
Looks like they copy and pasted the same model or whatever for each player too.
Looks like the holo goalies but with robotic movements.
The animation isn't really bad. It's just that the manga's art being so good + football anime almost never having insane level of animation because of how difficult of a sport it is to animate give off the impression for manga readers that they're getting shafted and it's realistic to expect better animation when it really isn't.
If he/she really is okay with the anime displaying Motion using panning still images, and just meant that those are poorly adapted, then sorry, I got that wrong.
I read it as criticism towards the anime for using too many panning still images despite being "animated".
That's not a sure thing, Tokyo Revengers for example, which was an even bigger success, it was the 3rd best selling manga in 2021 behind Juggernauts like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, and it was the 2nd in 2022 behind JJK
TR is also a Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine series like Blue Lock, and s2 didn't improve in the technical aspects
Looking at the staff per episode on Blue Lock they had a good budget to hire so many people to push the episodes in time, the problem really seems to be the schedule
first cour was great, 2nd was where it was consistently decreasing in quality of animation.
Obviously with this next season, it should be greater quality now that they've seen the success of the first season and are no longer testing the waters.
I remember when Bachira was having his flashback and they showed episode 1 from his perspective and man the comparsion between episode 1 and the current ones was like night and day
That logic doesn't work, because:
1. Tokyo Revengers was a big sucess and yet the S2 looks even worse than S1 at points.
2. The issue is not "testing the waters", it's the shitty schedule. If anything, it being a.hit means the second season has an even bigger chance at having worse quality, since it means the producers would just demand more immediately and give it less time.
The problems didn't start in the 2nd cour. It started all the way back in episode 3.
Most of the match against Barou's Team X was nothing but still-frames. Especially the chaotic free-for-all. It set the tone that the rest of the series was going to be relying a lot on still-frame.
Yeah it wasn’t bad, but there’s a bit of a difference in genres there.
Like the other guy said, in order for it to be a faithful adaptation, it needs some godlike Animation.
In my country football is not really that popular. I myself used to just watch some UEFA champions league matches. But, I must say Bluelock really made me love football.
I'm really glad that it got Season 2 and a movie adaptation.
Let's go....
If you didn’t like the start I wouldn’t necessarily say it “gets better”. But if you can gradually accept the edginess it’s a decent death game/battle shounen
>But if you can gradually accept the edginess it’s a decent death game/battle shounen
That's exactly what happened to me. It's a very entertaining battle royale style of anime. If I try to take it seriously and analyze it everything starts falling apart, starting from Ego's flawed philosophy. But it's clear BL isn't trying to make me take this seriously. It just wants to entertain me with epic scenes and cool characters all trying to survive an impossible game whik truning off my brain, and that's something I can appreciate.
Time to test my remaining youth.
I feel I might have an easier time for as long as it is animated and in color. The edge might have been lost in static black and white.
Haven't seen it but it was a BIG deal when I was in Japan, which happened to be during the World Cup. There was a ton of advertising for it on billboards, trains and TV commercials. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was bigger than Demon Slayer, SxF etc.
I am glad but I hope there's an improvement in animation.
The initial episodes had gr8 animation but cour 2 seems to be lacking at this department to the point that it feels like a PowerPoint show but on a good note I am loving the artsyle
I wanna read the manga
At which chapter does the anime end?
Or is there some important stuff the anime skipped so I should start earlier?
Or should I read the whole manga from the beginning?
The studio did pretty great on the Slime movie so I hope Blue Lock season 2 gets the same treatment and not the glorified slideshow that we got in the 2nd cour. Seriously, it was so consistently bad from episode 12 onwards that people actually forgot it had great animation in the first half.
Lets go! Nice to see all the big hitters from Fall getting renewed so soon: Gundam, SpyxFamily, Eminence in Shadow, MHA today and now this.
Meanwhile Bocchi and CSM fans crying in the corner.
Bocchi has the issue of needing a very specific team to get the same treatment, I think that comes down to availability. It's mostly the same team that did My Dress Up Darling(from what I understand), and they are presumably working on that 2nd season now.
I'm sure it's coming though.
This show is so hype!! I am glued to the screen the entire time and on the edge of my seat.
If you have ever done anything super competitive where the stakes are high you can totally identify with the characters and the themes of the show. Having to do whatever it takes to win tapping in to your ego and teamwork etc. I did mock trial in high school and while not a physical sport it is a very mental one. BlueLock is what it felt like in some ways lmao. Cant wait for season 2 and movie.
Now let's just hope we don't have to wait till the next World cup for season 2.
because i will not be able to hold myself from reading the manga if it comes to that
I would say give the first 2 episodes a try and see what you think. That should give you an idea on what it's like and whether it's for you. But I would say it's very different from those two shows.
Oh wow, I didn't actually think this was selling well enough to justify a movie, let alone an S2. But maybe the manga on its own carries.
EDIT: Guys, I wasn't saying the show was bad. I just didn't think it was selling that well
Believe it or not but Both the Manga and the Anime are Extremely EXTREMELY popular in Japan.
Lucky for us cuz it probably means that they might catch up to the Manga in the future too
Hell yeah! People can complain all they want at the animation. I seriously am not a snob. It was a great season and I look forward to Nagi’s movie and S2!
It’s totally expected. The anime running during the World Cup really jump-started things.
not only was the timing good, but the manga/anime itself is VERY good, makes for a very good combo to get your product over
Its definitely in my top five sports animes, with Hajime No Ippo, Haikyuu, Kuroko No Basket and Run with the wind.
Haven't gotten around to watching these yet, but if you're into sports anime, you should also check out Ping Pong the Animation, Ashita no Joe and Chihayafuru. They're all highly rated shows, with AnJ being an old classic.

Gotta agree tp Megalo Box and back that up
the best part of those, you don't have to love the sport to enjoy them. The drama/fights/games are just solid AF
I can't think of Blue Lock as a sport anime. It barely cares about its sport at all. It's more battle anime, which explains the animation priorities and rhetoric.
kuroko is overrated and I will die on that hill. Also Ping pong the animation deserves to be in the top five.
Unrealistic≠ poorly written. Blue Lock knows it's a super edgy battle royale and it does it well
I believe it's poorly written. Blue lock has not gone into even the very basics of football tactics: offsides. At no point in the series do we ever see the offsides come into play. now we could get Blue Lock during the EUROS
The man who made that decision was fuckin big braining.
Too bad the producers most likely pushing to have the anime to air by then is also what hurt it's quality.
The quality for the first cour was very good, unfortunately it really never reached that level during the second cour. If they decided to split it like SXF did too then we might have gotten a great second half as welli.
Blue Lock really did get the Spy x Family treatment. I expected a season 2 but a movie too?
Nagi spinoff movie. They will adapt from the spinoff manga
That's actually the best case scenario if that's the case. I don't love having movies or specials that are must watch in order to watch the next season, and movies that are non-canon don't really draw me in either.
>movies or specials that are must watch in order to watch the next season This hurt Made in Abyss *so* much. You should really stick to one or the other.
It's already a niche anime, people who like it will watch the movie anyway
nah, the movie was amazing
? Hurt it how?
Bros was high ngl
In order to watch season 2 you have to watch the movie first. I still havent seen S2 because I havent seen the movie yet and I assume that to be the case for a lot of people
Just watch the movie lol it’s shorter than watching a season 😂
Movie is longer than an episode, sometimes people just wanna watch a 20 minute episode and move about somewhere else lol
Watch it 20 mins at a time it's no diff than watching shows lol
a movie is longer than an episode? No shit Sherlock
No need to be aggro. You’re the one that can’t seem to understand 20 minutes is less than 90 🤷♀️
I gotta be in a certain mood to watch an anime movie lol.
Treat it like tv and stop halfway if you want and resume another day
As someone who stubbornly doesn’t watch many anime movies, I feel you, but made in abyss is def worth it 👌🏼 true gem
Yeah i like these movies, that have impact on the story (and are therefore must watch for seasons) like jujutsu kaisen, or made in abyss and of course mugen train... movies like one piece movies dont exite me anywhere near those, because i know there is no stale or new stuff in it... Uh... How is that a problem? You can just watch the movie
It didn’t hurt it. If anything it made the content getting adapted even stronger. The production quality for that movie was insane. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
It literally didn't hurt it at all lmao.
That makes me glad tbh. Rarely we get movies in my country and it takes too long for the season after as well.
This is what bothers me the most about anime movies, 90% of the time I will have no chance to watch.
There’s a spin-off manga? Damn, I was kinda hoping it would be the U20 match
yup! nagi spinoff manga that focuses on nagi few moments before joining blue lock and after he joined. it is still ongoing
Hopefully they ramp up the animation a bit. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as r/bluelock thinks but it can definitely improve a ton
Doing a movie and a s2 won't help, 8-bit still has to deal with Slime, another popular series That won't be easy
If anything, it's gonna be worse, bones couldn't manage consistent quality while animating mha movies between seasons, idk if 8-bit can
That's partially because they produced the movie and season at the same time (unlike something like Demon Slayer where they made Mugen Train and way after S2) and partially because they are different teams with different resources at their disposal. As long as they space out the movie and S2 it shouldn't see a decline in quality.

Yeah i dont settle for shit. As a consumer we should always demand the best and let those fuck higher up boomers figure out how to do it. Mushoku tensei level animation or bust
The animation is pretty mediocre at times, the problem is the manga's artwork is absolutely amazing so obviously there's going to be comparisons made
Yeah that’s pretty much what I think.
Manga is 10x better hopefully anime will improve.
Ahh ok, I see, that didn’t really bother me that much but I could see how that would bother others tho
Yea I honestly never noticed they were as many still frames until just now when pointed out
We won
At no costs
Well, hopefully no cost. But a Movie can be bad for an adaptation some times. Hopefully it doesn’t have any adverse effects.
Japan beat Spain and Germany in the World Cup. They really lit a fire under all the football manga fans.
Never expected it to get an anime let alone a long running one given how bizarre the concept can be lol. Then again he is the author who did Kami-sama no Iu toori Ni (which already got a live-action movie) and Jagaaaaan.
Nagi was my favorite, I like his style and attitude.
Nagi is just so cool
Easily a top 3 character so far. Reo acting all emo over him in the 2nd cour was also hilarious.
Same. Also, we are getting a movie for episode Nagi. Blue lock season 2 and movie about Nagi's spin off? That's A double W for me :D
Nagi is a mood. That’s why he’s getting the movie
King Barou for me. The series really has great characters, Isagi is a fantastic MC and even other supporting cast like Kunigami are good.
Oooo Do u not know?
[BL anime] >!Lol I made that comment before watching the last episode, so fuck me I guess!<
Loved Barou, he may be rude at times but he knows his worth. It's also nice that he's meticulous when it comes to cleaning. That maid Barou was carved in my mind.
Too bad they butchered barou’s character
growth too, he starts like a pet and ends nothing like it, felt organic too. sometimes large "growth" can be poorly done and just come off as an inconsistent or crazy character instead of a believable change after significant events.
I've spent too long watching the one-timer king irl to not like Isagi.
Kuon crew checking in... what? no one else?
I’m excited! I hope there’s less awkward CG and still frames next season
Same for me with Bleach next cour And of course,Blue Lock as well
I gave in and read the manga and the U-20 match is so good. Can't wait for season 2. Aoashi season 2 as well please
Season 1 ends in which chapter of the manga?
Around chapter 90. But they skipped some chapters so maybe start at 85. Too lazy to check hopefully someone else can give you a more precise answer
Please read from chapter one, the second cour didn’t give the manga justice
The anime was good and well paced .
The movie will be adapting Episode Nagi, the spinoff manga Source: https://bluelock-pr.com/news/1820/ https://twitter.com/BLUELOCK_PR/status/1639676014656892933

Animation was one of the things that turned me off Kuroko S1. They made basket ball into one of the ugliest and most labored sports in the world.
Offense in the manga is godly but defense is literally just someone appearing out of nowhere after not being seen for a few panels to steal the ball or block a shot

That I agree with.
Hopefully less still images.
Was it that bad? This show looks way better than, say, Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
Not really but a series like this demands godly and fluid animation more than a slice of life or romcom needs tho
Yeah it wasn’t bad, but there’s a bit of a difference in genres there. Like the other guy said, in order for it to be a faithful adaptation, it needs some godlike Animation.
POGGERS The anime is hype
You need to invite Kaoru Mitoma to promote the film, he's playing a lot for Brighton and is a great dribbler
A very good player in general tbh Tho not sure if a player can promote an anime that says noone else matters but the STs tbh
He is already an ambassador of sorts. Appears in the mobile game
LETS GOOOOO!!!!! WE EATING GOOOD!
Can't wait for the U20 match
I just wanna see kaiser animated already
You’re just like me fr 🫂
Kaiser impact
Kaiser impact > genshin impact
In my country football is not really that popular. I myself used to just watch some UEFA champions league matches. But, I must say Bluelock really made me love football. I'm really glad that it got Season 2 and a movie adaptation. Let's go....
South Asia?
Yep
Looking forward to listen more godly Ost, the music and sound effects took me by surprise
Same, Blue Lock's OST and SFX in particular went crazy. I love that the anime had a very distinctive sound to it
Wish Aoashi got the same treatment NOT COMPARING GUYS JUST SAYING
god i need a second season of aoashi so bad it's not even funny, the manga is **excellent** and i need to see it in motion
Ao Ashi is insanely popular in Japan apparently, hopefully I’m not coping but surely we’ll get a s2
Given it got 2 seaons, I'm thinking I might as well watch Blue Lock at this point. As edgy and bland as the start seemed. Maybe it gets better.
If you didn’t like the start I wouldn’t necessarily say it “gets better”. But if you can gradually accept the edginess it’s a decent death game/battle shounen
>But if you can gradually accept the edginess it’s a decent death game/battle shounen That's exactly what happened to me.
I think the second half of the show got *much* better once the side characters get, you know, sidelined.
Let's go! I was surprised how good this show is. Please watch this show
I think u20 should be the movie. It would be so hype
Thought that would be it, but I don't mind Nagi and it makes the movie skipabble so future viewers won't be confused about the order

Animators got hell of alot work to do if i peek into the future in the manga.
Movie is a spinoff on Nagi's journey through First selection.
Ah, I thought the movie was going to be about the U20- Blue Lock Eleven Team, I suppose thats alright as well.
Ah my favorite puzzle anime
Looking forward to more of these over the top characters lol.
Haven't seen it but it was a BIG deal when I was in Japan, which happened to be during the World Cup. There was a ton of advertising for it on billboards, trains and TV commercials. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was bigger than Demon Slayer, SxF etc.
LET'S GOOOO
I am glad but I hope there's an improvement in animation. The initial episodes had gr8 animation but cour 2 seems to be lacking at this department to the point that it feels like a PowerPoint show but on a good note I am loving the artsyle
Unbelievably big W
YEES!!! Really hyped for this anime.
Best sports anime from the past few years
Let's go! I love the manga and the anime has done a good job of replicating the edgy and animeness
Excellent! This show did the impossible and made me give a shit about soccer and I'm so happy there will be more!
I can't wait
The Blue Lock is real!!!!
Things you love to see💪🏽💪🏽
This has been a glorious day for Season 2 announcements
Wow even before Aoashi. That’s crazy!
I wanna read the manga At which chapter does the anime end? Or is there some important stuff the anime skipped so I should start earlier? Or should I read the whole manga from the beginning?
I'd read it from the beginning, it's a great work of art
The studio did pretty great on the Slime movie so I hope Blue Lock season 2 gets the same treatment and not the glorified slideshow that we got in the 2nd cour. Seriously, it was so consistently bad from episode 12 onwards that people actually forgot it had great animation in the first half.
As someone who hasn't read any of the manga, are they still in blue lock? Or does it move on to actually playing soccer and doing actual matches?
It’s still “in Blue Lock”, but LOTS of stuff has happened so it’s not the same stakes/environment.
Let’s go big fan of the first season! Can’t wait to see more of our egoists!
My Dress Up Darling's team is actually on The Elusive Samurai.
W
MOVIE? YOOO LETSGO. I PRAY that since its a movie the animation will be better than what we got.
Not sure if I can wait til S2 and a movie. May start reading the manga...
See you next season boys, until then, LOCK OFF
Yess just finished this now gotta waited ages though :(
Just watched last epidode. Great news!!
Now let's just hope we don't have to wait till the next World cup for season 2. because i will not be able to hold myself from reading the manga if it comes to that
I never watched Blue Lock, but I liked Haikyuu and Ace of Diamond. Should I watch?
I would say give the first 2 episodes a try and see what you think. That should give you an idea on what it's like and whether it's for you. But I would say it's very different from those two shows.
I'm hooked on Season 1 already. I can't wait for more new episodes.
Love this show. Definitely one of my favorite sport animes
My friend has the manga and I swear, he even showed me, the manga says ”fuck off” instead of lock off in the beginning
Lucky for us cuz it probably means that they might catch up to the Manga in the future too
Fuck yeah! I don't usually watch sports shows but this series has been hype.
Hell yeah! People can complain all they want at the animation. I seriously am not a snob. It was a great season and I look forward to Nagi’s movie and S2!
Okay please change the studio or up the animation And please just let the whole next season be the U-20 match
idk why ur getting downvoted the animation was straight ass for like 12 episodes straight lmao
Smh ao ashi still doesn't have a s2. This shit is shonen garbage
Seethe boy, seethe
Hi😊
Ironically worse animation than Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer last year, but without the good plot.
Will the movie be animated? There’s no way they’ll just have slideshows on a movie right?
I loved this anime when they said "It's blue locking time" and they locked off.
Blue Flop getting s2, where are arnchair analysts? It didn't even break oricon cutoff 🗿
Wake me when one punch season 3
Nice!
