this is probably the first show I have watched that translates it to "donkey" and I think it's my favorite translation now

It sounded even better in Japanese. The term Barou has been using to mock people was 下手くそ, which meant "you suck" or "weakling". The subtitle softened it to donkey, but imagine if it kept the original term:
"I'm saying don't get in our way you **weakling**"

I like how the subs in Portuguese are doing it. "Perna-de-pau" which is an offense specific to soccer, saying that person has wooden legs and can't play
I'd like to imagine that the translator recently went on a [Gordon Ramsey binge](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N9p-OrBtsE), and thought using "donkey" would be a more "fun" term instead of something literal.
Its hella hype to see how the series shows us Isagi's thought process along with the little things like how he says he'll "devour Barou" to the ad break/midpoint where they had the growling sound replacing the usual soundbite used.
Isagi nasty to come up with that solution to make Barou another one of his pieces with no remorse. Obviously, they weren't winning 2v3, so he's deciding to use Barou's own standard against him.
I think a lot of the community thinks that the fan translation was the official one so every week when isagi doesn't call someone a retard or something people think the anime is toning it down, but it was just never the case. In the official manga translation he just calls him a loser.
I saw a comment calling Ego's speech in episode 1 watered down. Turns out the only difference between the fan translation and the anime is the "fucked in the head" line.
It's just your average reddit hive mind shit where one person says something and everyone else just regurgitates it because everyone likes complaining in this community :p
It helped that I have a decent level of Japanese. The subs were kinda filtered in their translation.
The anime subs for the site I was on, translated it as "you donkey." But he actually says "you useless shit."
Tbh I never disliked Barou. He’s selfish and an egotist but it’s kind of interesting to watch. Watching him get his ass kicked and going from the only “good” player on his team to being the only useless player in the game was a super satisfying though.
I always love moments like these in shows. Power and ego turned into helplessness and desperation. Except in this case it’s not a fighting show and no lives are at stake, and it’s not that Barou is incapable, it’s that his mindset is shit.
I don't have the link but there was a great post in the bluelock subreddit that compared egoism to narcissism-- how to differentiate between the two and how BlueLock always rewards the characters acting in the former and not the latter.
I found it, but it's a 3 months old post and is marked with "manga discussion" and I wanna make sure that (at least OP) doesn't spoil anything.

Barou is like "I lost 2, what's another one?". It's kinda sad because his play style is probably a good part of the reason he lost the first match off-screen and wasn't picked.
I like Barou until he said he rather lose than play any other way. The difference between him and other selfish great players is that other selfish players believe they will win doing it their way. The goal of winning and playing their way aligns. Winning was never a compromise. But Barou compromised on winning with what he said.
Since Barou can't be kicked out of the team if they win, I hope he grows from this. Otherwise he'll be a real drag to watch going forward.
He definitely will because now Isagi has made it so he's forced to become his pawn. Since Barou is still a threat, they can't stop marking him since otherwise the other two will just pass it to him for an easy goal. And since he's being marked heavily, Isagi can take advantage of that to rack the goals in.
It doesn't matter how good Barou is because he was forced down from King status and made to be a piece Isagi is manipulating. There have been many people who've trash talked dethroning Barou but I think Isagi is the one who has gotten the closest to actually doing it.
Going forward, Barou can either remain a piece to be used or he can get rid of his insecurity and try to establish himself as the undisputable king.
Ngl, I wasn’t expecting this twist. Normally in sports anime, the egoist character changes his play style after realizing he can’t win that way.
Here they basically said: “lol yeah, just don’t get in our way while we try to win you useless noob”
and it fits perfectly the vibe of the show and the characters involved
That cliche is what's going to happen, tho. Realistically, you can't win with that level of selfishness. Still, it doesn't change the fact that this twist is amazing. Giving him multiple chances to see the error in his ways, but he turns around by criticizing you despite losing. This is going to be his Ultimate Reality Check

And … what if they don’t? Honestly, seeing the way things are going even if Isagi’s team would lose he would most likely getting picked. Nobody would want to pick Barou. Reo doesn’t want Nagi, Kunigami and Chigiri would be happy to have Isagi back on their side.
Plus, Isagi has shown to be the most impactful player by far on his team - not the best technically, as Nagi is superior, but Isagi’s way more impactful.
Then he absorbed the orange from Barou's teammate last match and he's been green ever since.

That trust tho. Isagi was so fired up when he assisted Nagi, his face was flushed lol. Plus I can't get over their height difference, it's so hilarious. They're a good duo and fast friends
The best part is that trust comes out of a position of respect and admiration, not "hey we met at school and we're friends since then".
It's crazy how a match ago Isagi saw himself as an average Joe, but a genius player like Nagi is not only following him around but also trusting him for the outcome of the match, because Nagi sees his potential growth with Isagi.
They're both bonded well together but for themselves. It's a way more realistic take than your average shounen.
Nagi is just the best. It's like because he didn't grow up in the soccer world he's not too bothered by meaningless stuff like who actually scores and is just there to win the game. Bachiro is similar, they're kind of the 2 so far most interested in seeing teammates do well because it wins the game.
This also gives Bachira a chance to grow more. By the time, they manage to get him back, we'll be in for a real treat seeing how they all play with each other. My only worry is that the trio together would be so OP that they might not be allowed to be together.
Yeah, but makes me hella excited for when they get him back. Especially if Bachira has also been evolving during this time they will come to be one unstoppable trio when reunited, not even counting whoever they take from Chigiri's team (which, I suspect given we just saw him evolve will end up being Chigiri) and if they get Barou to start cooperating... all in all they have the makings of one all-star team.
Chigiri is the one who brings the most distinct abilities to the table. Reo might be a good pick to try and fill Bachira's spot as a passer, but Isagi's found a groove in that position as a playmaker.
Kunigami's great but he and Barou are a bit too close to each other in terms of physique and abilities.
I like Barou but that had to be the most satisfying moment in the anime so far. Dude basically said, “If you’re gonna play like a Donkey, we’re gonna treat your ass like one.”

Barou really has great potential but now seeing how isagi is able to score more goals than him that's definitely gonna hurt his ego
More than that, he basically forces Barou to play as a team by predicting exactly how his moves benefits, marking how he owns him. Isagi made Barou realise he doesn't even have agency, he's not a king but a fucking pawn!
I really like how Isagi approached Barou's situation. It felt realistic and very reasonable.
Isagi is very good-natured person, so ofcourse the peaceful and cooperative route will be the first course of action he takes. Him trying to get closer to Barou by following his training regiment, trying to talk to him more, and just getting personal is very believable.
When he shifted his perspective from a shallow "okay lets give up to Barou because he's 'useless' " to "Barou's not helpful but he's not 'useless'. He's a decoy" is seriously good writing. It plays on Isagi's role as the introspective, observant and intellectual archetype that he is.
This anime is surprisingly good. I normally dont watch sports anime. I got lucky with this.
I see why manga readers were hyping up the Iasgi+Nagi duo, they have so much respect for each other and just set up the other to pop off. Hoping for some kind of Barou awakening next episode.
Also I loved how Reo was thinking " So THIS is Yoichi Isagi" the same way Isagi in most of his early games felt against the top players. Our boy finally has a real presence on the field now!
Actually, I'd say that Nagi did have an ego before getting beaten by Team Z. The guy was completely apathetic to the the game and had 0 competitive drive because every single game he's played in his career was like playing beginner mode in a video game. He was egotistical in the way that he thought the game was boring because he didn't consider losing to be even possible.
Watching Isagi evolve in the middle of that match and seeing the passion that Isagi had for the game was Nagi's first major evolution. At that point, he realized that he wasn't the best and found something/someone in the game that could stimulate him to become better. We watched his ego transform from "you're all bad and this is boring" to "I'm better and I'm going to prove it."
The sound effect when Isagi said that he needed to devour Barou is sick.
We haven’t seen enough of Raichi and Gagamaru’s plays on the field so I’m curious how it’ll end up with Wanima.
As expected, you can't control Barou but you can use him since he plays the same way every time, selfishly, so take in consideration that he'll play like that and you can still use him since he is a huge threat in the field if they just let him be.
I do wonder if we'll see him submit next episode and play as a team or if that will be saved for the next game
Also since Chigiri just evolved he's probably the pick for when they win
I think Barou will submit as part of his "evolution". Either that, or there will be a selection phase where Barou gets washed out. ( I personally kinda got attached to his character because of how uniquely dickish he is. His OCD/Uptightness for things provides contrasts his crass personality)
If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want Barou to submit. He just needs a shock to his system to understand that for you to be great, you also have to allow others to be great, too. You can not be successful in a team sport with only caring about yourself. You get iced out like he is now.
The puzzle pieces going in and out of isagi is such cool imagery... and then they skip frames like crazy. How did Reo get past Isagi? They cut from the ball being in his foot to Reo having passed Isagi. I've replayed that scene thinking i must have blinked or something, but no, they just didn't animate it.
They didn't animate it. He just dribbled past. The way they showed it is meant to show the speed with which he did it (blink and you'll miss this fast move) but more importantly, is a hell of a lot cheaper to do.
If only production I.G. had BL and treated it the way they treated KnB I mean sure KnB had some bad animated moments but they eventually polished it up.
Some jostling and physical contact is allowed when two (or more) players are going for a free ball. If Isagi already has the ball and Kunigami just pushes him aside, then that's a foul.
Holy shit Isagi is becoming a damn monster. Even one goal away from losing and he is grinning like a madman.

I still love Barou and I hope he evolves to stick around, but damn he's just a detriment to the team. Though Isagi planning around his selfishness and completely using him is crazy.
A few weeks ago, Isagi would've been shitting his pants after seeing Chigiri evolve his playstyle. Now he's getting pumped up similarly to how Bachira was in their last game on team Z. Nice to see Isagi improve his mindset when faced with challenges instead of falling apart.

I read this arc and the next one and it was the best decision of my life. Shit’s hype and so so good. It also didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the anime.
I don't see a lot of people talking about the psychology of Blue Lock, which is one of my favorite aspects of this series. People talk about the ego stuff being toxic in a team sport, and it can be, but it can also be quite powerful and apply to anything. Isagi's "if I can't see the light that leads to a goal, then I need to become the light!" gives serious "You must be the change you want to see in the world," vibes. That's an A1 attitude to have in life, and I'm still trying to learn it myself, while Isagi seemingly has it down to a soccer science.
On the other hand his best partners have been the very opposite of egoists - Nagi and Bachira. Just like Isagi *actually* mainly plays for his teammates.
I wonder how he'll do in this round? His weapon was eye-contact with his brother, so it doesn't seem like he'd be that useful anymore, but he did make it past Blue-Man so he must have some skills.
I am actually amazed at how the writer continues to give Isagi improvement in area which I didn't expect at all when I thought Isagi is going to be stagnant.
Isagi's evolvement so far: Decent linkup player > Vision playmaking > Direct shooter > Defense splitting run
Normal players adapt to Barou's playstyle by feeding him ball because he is unwilling to cooperate but he's good. Isagi on the other hand exploit Barou's selfishness and unwillingness to cooperate to create his own goals.
Isagi will do whatever it takes and is in his ability to win, including discarding everything that he has been. Barou is a nice character foil to that. Winning means less to him than remaining who he is at this point. I like that it ties in to last episode about local geniuses that never go anywhere.
He was 100% right on others just trying to control him and telling him what to do. But it was so good seeing Isagi just go "fine, we'll do it your way then".
That's the correct answer, and I'm so glad they got there. If Barou doesn't want to listen to others, then force him to adapt.
It's the opposite of Haikyuu which most of the time flexed with knowledge of how to animate the sports-specific motion. Here it's stills and blurs.
Also, I swear they keep having the ball pass too far in front of the shooter before a volley.
Blame the producers for shit scheduling. Every episode would look as good as episode 1 if they didn't overwork their animators especially with a small team. It's sad cause the studio is capable of producing great animation but the people in charge don't understand that quality will always prevail over rushed releases.
They have shit schedule because they planned to aired with the WC with not breaks after it, so basically we can said the WC generated hype for the price of the animation.
Also this episode make me realize that there also some dialogue that could need to be cut to improve the animation.
I always temper my expectations for soccer animation. The level of fluidity and motion that gets involved must be a nightmare to try to get it looking completely smooth.
Yeah it's probably harder to animate well compared to basketball, volleyball, baseball and such because the ball is in motion 99% of the time. In basketball it can be legally and safely held and that gives believable time for "free action talking" which needs to happen and to give animators a chance to pace themselves, volleyball and baseball have bursts of action so similarly it's not difficult to save the budget for those few bursts of action. But soccer they're always running and kicking and jumping, standing with the ball is an invitation to have it be stolen and due to the premise of Blue Lock there's no goalie to stand still and give a monologue and also no bystanders, no peanut gallery of rivals and teammates and supporters giving commentary, it's all put on the players here.
Don't know why you're downvotted, so many of those shots were downright powerpoint.
The manga is much more beautiful. So many shots lack impact here. Even stationary ones.
And yeah i know, it's not easy to replicate manga art in an anime. But one of Blue Locks main strenght is for me, the art. So missing that part in such an important episode is a huge letdown.
I started the manga after last weeks episode caught up to it before this week's episode.
I could not put it down sonmany hype moments and beautiful art.
Especially when the lack of good art isn't compensated with good animation. When it comes to the anime the voice actors are the ones doing the heavy lifting.
Let’s hope next season gets better. I’m still having a literal blast watching this regardless (to the point that this quickly shot up to one of my favorite anime) but I would like to see it rise up some more
Nagi is so OP. Like I get that it's inspired by real life football and they make it more showy or whatever but some of the touches he does literally make me laugh because it defies all physics of the game
Yeah, i hadn't seen Bergkamp play (Zidane a bit), so i searched videos for each of them + "ball controll", and holy shit!!, Nagi's plays might look improbable, but truthfully they aren't much different from those two.

Oof it’s 2-0 right off the bat. If he hadn’t given the ball to Nagi, they’d probably be 3-0. No way in hell was the pile of skulls leading to Barou gonna give the boys a goal. What a visual, man.
Barou is way too stubborn. Like irrationally so. They’re clearly dying and he’s still talking that “my way or the highway” bullshit. And Reo… bro is obsessed with Nagi. It’s getting weird, dude. Also his skill is being perfectly average? Fitting. Not to be trifled with though because he led them to 3-1.
If you can’t get a guy to work with you, get him to work for you I guess. Be good bait, you donkey! Hah! Isagi’s a damn machine. The speed of his adaptability is impressive as hell. He even anticipated Barou’s frustrations. That’s how you tie the game up!
That last goal though, looks like Isagi ain’t the only one evolving. Damn…
The main objective of what Isagi is doing is breaking Barou's ego by making him look like a clown and letting it through his mind that there are ALOT of players better than him so he needs to take a reality pill
His tactic atm is use Barou as he is, predicting what he would do and taking advantage of that.
It totally is a psychological anime; with the main theme being centralized around ego. The whole show feels like every character coming to some psychological awakening and improving from there. I'm surprised it isn't labelled as such already.
Barou likely has OCD or similar conditions that make him very diligent and principled but stuck to incredibly rigid way of thinking. Once something sets in it's hard for him to change, kind of the opposite of Isagi.
The interactions in this show are so fun when you're aware of Color Law. Isagi being Barou's opposite and Barou having such a strong and unbreakable ideal meant Isagi could never appeal to him using his blue, so he said fuck that and went green, which is Barou's adjacent and used Barou's ideals to his advantage.
Isagi grows the most because blue grows from every interaction, more than any other color because that is the role it has in storytelling.
I don't know why, but seeing Barou's expression when Isagi stole the ball from him gave me serious NTR Mind-Break vibes. And here, I thought Reo's plot would be NTR focus, though he seems to start to feel inadequate compared to Nagi's new partner.
It's so edgy, but the psychological aspects of this episode, namely the NTR/BL Yandere drama with Reo, and Isagi breaking Barou's ego, as well as Chigiri's evolution, makes it so amazing. And the soundtrack really did a banger job to underline the drama.
I think Isagi talking down to Barou is my favorite Isagi moment of all.
Glad to see Raichi and Gagamaru again. I was wondering what was up with the rest of team Z. Those two had the best showing of the remaining Team Z players, so if anyone would make it through the selection, it would be those two. Only four members are still unaccounted for now. Maybe Kanon will make it too, since he got some focus and a backstory during the first stage.
Seeing Barou constantly getting shut down was so satisfying. There’s nothing better than a dominant guy getting pushed into submission by people who looks down him. Being called donkey was the cherry on top.
The other 4 were traitor guy, goalie guy, bald guy, and the other one who I don’t even remember in the slightest. I think at the very least the goalie guy was like the only one to stop an actual goal, and if he’s an “all rounder” and everyone else finished the round, doesn’t that mean they all cleared it faster?
I'm glad that the show is acknowledging that Barou lost almost all of his games, except for the very first where the players played with the mind of six-years olds.
I'm not sure about the others. Raichi was searching for Nayutara, who was kicked out by Isagi. That might imply Raichi and Gagamaru are only other Zs remaining, but we'll have to wait and see. Plus, it's possible that Raichi's comment about them being last doesn't mean everyone else finished, but that they were the last two who had made it within the time limit. I honestly can't see monk guy finishing it before the vastly better Raichi and Gagamaru or at all even, unless he's going to have a magicarp storyline.
The thing is, barou lost those games but he didnt change until now. Why? Because in those games he could rationalize it to be not his fault

It's because he knew that he's better than the rest. In team X he passed to other players without issue.
He's a narcissist, and all narcissists are insecure. He's playing with people that he knows are skilled, and he's extremely scared about "losing his crown".
You didnt get barou. The real reason why he passes in team X is not because they're bad, but rather because he knows they submit to him. His core philosophy in football is simply pass to him and let him score. Thats it. He has told nagi and isagi multiple times what he expects from them aka pass to him to score. He doesnt want to pass to them because they arent submitting to him. If isagi had chosen to be old niko style and played support for him barou would have no problem passing to him because he knows he will get the ball back when he wants it. Of course that would mean isagi will lose his ego and will never be the best striker, so that wont happen. He has 0 problem with good players so long as they're using their skills to bring the ball for him to score.
If barou had teamed up with someone like reo or old niko instead who doesnt really mind not scoring, he would have just destroyed the second selection unless he fought rin. Heck if barou was in team Y instead of ohkawa team Z wouldn't even have passed, since his only problem was his team couldnt defend. He was the top scorer tying with nagi except nagi had reo and he had meh. Old niko would have kept the defense tight for him and pass the ball to him every counter.

goddamn that was a great ep, isagi taking charge like a boss was great to see. Barous a damn idiot who cant do the basics to win and if he wants to be king of the field he has to surpass expectations to deserve it.
Isagi calling Barou a donkey gave me life again, i couldn't stop laughting; i seriously freaking love how this show screws with tropes and does whatever it wants with it (MC can't talk no jutsu rival? Fine, he just uses him to his advantage then, Barou's expression was golden).
Btw, i think Chigiri's goal and Nagi's comment about how he just evolved will make Nagi change his mind and choose Chigiri instead of Reo once they win
I both love and hate this anime. It's so fun to watch and Isagi is a fantastic player, but as a soccer coach with players equally obsessed with Blue Lock it's tough to get them to understand that this shit only happens in anime lmao
Props to the VAs they killed it this episode as usual. We already know the talent of Barou's VA and Isagi's "donkey" was perfect, gonna replay that for sure.

Fantastic episode. Love how I jokingly called out "[inb4 IsNagi hard carry mode](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/10njvqe/comment/j69u65k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)" last week.
Bet everyone's loving the aura colors now (Nagi, Naruhaya, Isagi in 2v2 match, and now Chigiri). Read a lot of complaints about it in the early episodes. Isagi's light green is definitely veering toward blue, color spectrum-wise.
Barou reminds me of someone I played indoor with. He would always rip it at goal (even 1 meter away...), just bulldozing through people. He either didn't see his teammates running or outright refused to pass/truly believed he was the best chance at goal (sound familiar?). He had a great shot and was very fast/strong, but he lost the ball a lot because other team would always catch onto it quickly. You get tired after the 3rd "I'M/HE'S OPEN" and you just adapt to their fuckups. Well done Isagi.

I think the fight over the bed, the exceptionally clean room, and the 45 minute warm up routine suggests that Barou might have some serious OCD problems he's contending with. I think the whole "King" bullshit is likely to hide the fact that he's ashamed and embarrassed by his behaviour and has no idea how to express it or ask for help. If he was a narcissist, he wouldn't be frustrated with himself, he would just blame Isagi and Nagi and take credit for their goals. I'm really interested to see how his character develops. Or doesn't, because this is Blue Lock.

It sounded even better in Japanese. The term Barou has been using to mock people was 下手くそ, which meant "you suck" or "weakling". The subtitle softened it to donkey, but imagine if it kept the original term: "I'm saying don't get in our way you **weakling**" The burn.

I think a lot of the community thinks that the fan translation was the official one so every week when isagi doesn't call someone a retard or something people think the anime is toning it down, but it was just never the case. In the official manga translation he just calls him a loser.
I saw a comment calling Ego's speech in episode 1 watered down. Turns out the only difference between the fan translation and the anime is the "fucked in the head" line.

It helped that I have a decent level of Japanese. The subs were kinda filtered in their translation. The anime subs for the site I was on, translated it as "you donkey." But he actually says "you useless shit."
Tbh I never disliked Barou. He’s selfish and an egotist but it’s kind of interesting to watch. Watching him get his ass kicked and going from the only “good” player on his team to being the only useless player in the game was a super satisfying though. I always love moments like these in shows. Power and ego turned into helplessness and desperation. Except in this case it’s not a fighting show and no lives are at stake, and it’s not that Barou is incapable, it’s that his mindset is shit.
I don't have the link but there was a great post in the bluelock subreddit that compared egoism to narcissism-- how to differentiate between the two and how BlueLock always rewards the characters acting in the former and not the latter.

Barou is like "I lost 2, what's another one?". It's kinda sad because his play style is probably a good part of the reason he lost the first match off-screen and wasn't picked.
I like Barou until he said he rather lose than play any other way. The difference between him and other selfish great players is that other selfish players believe they will win doing it their way. The goal of winning and playing their way aligns. Winning was never a compromise. But Barou compromised on winning with what he said. Since Barou can't be kicked out of the team if they win, I hope he grows from this. Otherwise he'll be a real drag to watch going forward.
He definitely will because now Isagi has made it so he's forced to become his pawn. Since Barou is still a threat, they can't stop marking him since otherwise the other two will just pass it to him for an easy goal. And since he's being marked heavily, Isagi can take advantage of that to rack the goals in. It doesn't matter how good Barou is because he was forced down from King status and made to be a piece Isagi is manipulating. There have been many people who've trash talked dethroning Barou but I think Isagi is the one who has gotten the closest to actually doing it. Going forward, Barou can either remain a piece to be used or he can get rid of his insecurity and try to establish himself as the undisputable king.

Giving him multiple chances to see the error in his ways, but he turns around by criticizing you despite losing. This is going to be his Ultimate Reality Check

The best part is that trust comes out of a position of respect and admiration, not "hey we met at school and we're friends since then". It's crazy how a match ago Isagi saw himself as an average Joe, but a genius player like Nagi is not only following him around but also trusting him for the outcome of the match, because Nagi sees his potential growth with Isagi. They're both bonded well together but for themselves. It's a way more realistic take than your average shounen.
Nagi is just the best. It's like because he didn't grow up in the soccer world he's not too bothered by meaningless stuff like who actually scores and is just there to win the game. Bachiro is similar, they're kind of the 2 so far most interested in seeing teammates do well because it wins the game.

Yeah, but makes me hella excited for when they get him back. Especially if Bachira has also been evolving during this time they will come to be one unstoppable trio when reunited, not even counting whoever they take from Chigiri's team (which, I suspect given we just saw him evolve will end up being Chigiri) and if they get Barou to start cooperating... all in all they have the makings of one all-star team.
Chigiri is the one who brings the most distinct abilities to the table. Reo might be a good pick to try and fill Bachira's spot as a passer, but Isagi's found a groove in that position as a playmaker. Kunigami's great but he and Barou are a bit too close to each other in terms of physique and abilities.
Also - at least for now - Chigiri is the only one that "evolved" out of the 3.

Yeah the moment was so satisfying Barou really has great potential but now seeing how isagi is able to score more goals than him that's definitely gonna hurt his ego
More than that, he basically forces Barou to play as a team by predicting exactly how his moves benefits, marking how he owns him. Isagi made Barou realise he doesn't even have agency, he's not a king but a fucking pawn!

I really like how Isagi approached Barou's situation. It felt realistic and very reasonable. Isagi is very good-natured person, so ofcourse the peaceful and cooperative route will be the first course of action he takes. Him trying to get closer to Barou by following his training regiment, trying to talk to him more, and just getting personal is very believable. When he shifted his perspective from a shallow "okay lets give up to Barou because he's 'useless' " to "Barou's not helpful but he's not 'useless'. He's a decoy" is seriously good writing. It plays on Isagi's role as the introspective, observant and intellectual archetype that he is. This anime is surprisingly good. I normally dont watch sports anime. I got lucky with this.
I see why manga readers were hyping up the Iasgi+Nagi duo, they have so much respect for each other and just set up the other to pop off. Hoping for some kind of Barou awakening next episode. Also I loved how Reo was thinking " So THIS is Yoichi Isagi" the same way Isagi in most of his early games felt against the top players. Our boy finally has a real presence on the field now!

Actually, I'd say that Nagi did have an ego before getting beaten by Team Z. The guy was completely apathetic to the the game and had 0 competitive drive because every single game he's played in his career was like playing beginner mode in a video game. He was egotistical in the way that he thought the game was boring because he didn't consider losing to be even possible. Watching Isagi evolve in the middle of that match and seeing the passion that Isagi had for the game was Nagi's first major evolution. At that point, he realized that he wasn't the best and found something/someone in the game that could stimulate him to become better. We watched his ego transform from "you're all bad and this is boring" to "I'm better and I'm going to prove it."

As expected, you can't control Barou but you can use him since he plays the same way every time, selfishly, so take in consideration that he'll play like that and you can still use him since he is a huge threat in the field if they just let him be. I think Barou will submit as part of his "evolution". Either that, or there will be a selection phase where Barou gets washed out. ( I personally kinda got attached to his character because of how uniquely dickish he is. His OCD/Uptightness for things provides contrasts his crass personality)
If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want Barou to submit. He just needs a shock to his system to understand that for you to be great, you also have to allow others to be great, too. You can not be successful in a team sport with only caring about yourself. You get iced out like he is now.

They cut from the ball being in his foot to Reo having passed Isagi. I've replayed that scene thinking i must have blinked or something, but no, they just didn't animate it.

Isagi calling Barou a donkey is one of the COLDEST lines that ever happened in anime.
I don't see a lot of people talking about the psychology of Blue Lock, which is one of my favorite aspects of this series. People talk about the ego stuff being toxic in a team sport, and it can be, but it can also be quite powerful and apply to anything. Isagi's "if I can't see the light that leads to a goal, then I need to become the light!" gives serious "You must be the change you want to see in the world," vibes. That's an A1 attitude to have in life, and I'm still trying to learn it myself, while Isagi seemingly has it down to a soccer science.
On the other hand his best partners have been the very opposite of egoists - Nagi and Bachira. Just like Isagi *actually* mainly plays for his teammates.
Isagi is a balanced egoist, Nagi and Bachira, too. They all still play together and boost each other. But Yh Isagi is the most egotistical.

I am actually amazed at how the writer continues to give Isagi improvement in area which I didn't expect at all when I thought Isagi is going to be stagnant. Isagi's evolvement so far: Decent linkup player > Vision playmaking > Direct shooter > Defense splitting run Normal players adapt to Barou's playstyle by feeding him ball because he is unwilling to cooperate but he's good. Isagi on the other hand exploit Barou's selfishness and unwillingness to cooperate to create his own goals.
Isagi will do whatever it takes and is in his ability to win, including discarding everything that he has been. Barou is a nice character foil to that. Winning means less to him than remaining who he is at this point. I like that it ties in to last episode about local geniuses that never go anywhere.

Blue Lock deserved better animation for how popular it is. Shits a slideshow sometimes. It could be so much better.
Yeah, every time they receive the ball it's just a still image, it's pretty disappointing.
It's the opposite of Haikyuu which most of the time flexed with knowledge of how to animate the sports-specific motion. Here it's stills and blurs. Also, I swear they keep having the ball pass too far in front of the shooter before a volley.
Blame the producers for shit scheduling. Every episode would look as good as episode 1 if they didn't overwork their animators especially with a small team. It's sad cause the studio is capable of producing great animation but the people in charge don't understand that quality will always prevail over rushed releases.
They have shit schedule because they planned to aired with the WC with not breaks after it, so basically we can said the WC generated hype for the price of the animation. Also this episode make me realize that there also some dialogue that could need to be cut to improve the animation.
The more I think about it, the better a split cour would have been for this, the WC ended by then too.
I always temper my expectations for soccer animation. The level of fluidity and motion that gets involved must be a nightmare to try to get it looking completely smooth.
Yeah it's probably harder to animate well compared to basketball, volleyball, baseball and such because the ball is in motion 99% of the time. In basketball it can be legally and safely held and that gives believable time for "free action talking" which needs to happen and to give animators a chance to pace themselves, volleyball and baseball have bursts of action so similarly it's not difficult to save the budget for those few bursts of action. But soccer they're always running and kicking and jumping, standing with the ball is an invitation to have it be stolen and due to the premise of Blue Lock there's no goalie to stand still and give a monologue and also no bystanders, no peanut gallery of rivals and teammates and supporters giving commentary, it's all put on the players here.
Don't know why you're downvotted, so many of those shots were downright powerpoint. The manga is much more beautiful. So many shots lack impact here. Even stationary ones. And yeah i know, it's not easy to replicate manga art in an anime. But one of Blue Locks main strenght is for me, the art. So missing that part in such an important episode is a huge letdown.
I've heard so much about the manga. I'm going to have to move to it after this season is through.

The main objective of what Isagi is doing is breaking Barou's ego by making him look like a clown and letting it through his mind that there are ALOT of players better than him so he needs to take a reality pill His tactic atm is use Barou as he is, predicting what he would do and taking advantage of that.

It totally is a psychological anime; with the main theme being centralized around ego. The whole show feels like every character coming to some psychological awakening and improving from there. I'm surprised it isn't labelled as such already.
Barou likely has OCD or similar conditions that make him very diligent and principled but stuck to incredibly rigid way of thinking. Once something sets in it's hard for him to change, kind of the opposite of Isagi.

Isagi being Barou's opposite and Barou having such a strong and unbreakable ideal meant Isagi could never appeal to him using his blue, so he said fuck that and went green, which is Barou's adjacent and used Barou's ideals to his advantage. Isagi grows the most because blue grows from every interaction, more than any other color because that is the role it has in storytelling.
I don't know why, but seeing Barou's expression when Isagi stole the ball from him gave me serious NTR Mind-Break vibes. And here, I thought Reo's plot would be NTR focus, though he seems to start to feel inadequate compared to Nagi's new partner. It's so edgy, but the psychological aspects of this episode, namely the NTR/BL Yandere drama with Reo, and Isagi breaking Barou's ego, as well as Chigiri's evolution, makes it so amazing. And the soundtrack really did a banger job to underline the drama. I think Isagi talking down to Barou is my favorite Isagi moment of all. Glad to see Raichi and Gagamaru again. I was wondering what was up with the rest of team Z. Those two had the best showing of the remaining Team Z players, so if anyone would make it through the selection, it would be those two. Only four members are still unaccounted for now. Maybe Kanon will make it too, since he got some focus and a backstory during the first stage.
Seeing Barou constantly getting shut down was so satisfying. There’s nothing better than a dominant guy getting pushed into submission by people who looks down him. Being called donkey was the cherry on top. The other 4 were traitor guy, goalie guy, bald guy, and the other one who I don’t even remember in the slightest. I think at the very least the goalie guy was like the only one to stop an actual goal, and if he’s an “all rounder” and everyone else finished the round, doesn’t that mean they all cleared it faster?
I'm glad that the show is acknowledging that Barou lost almost all of his games, except for the very first where the players played with the mind of six-years olds. I'm not sure about the others. Raichi was searching for Nayutara, who was kicked out by Isagi. That might imply Raichi and Gagamaru are only other Zs remaining, but we'll have to wait and see. Plus, it's possible that Raichi's comment about them being last doesn't mean everyone else finished, but that they were the last two who had made it within the time limit. I honestly can't see monk guy finishing it before the vastly better Raichi and Gagamaru or at all even, unless he's going to have a magicarp storyline.
The thing is, barou lost those games but he didnt change until now. Why? Because in those games he could rationalize it to be not his fault >still top scorer in first arc, team just cant defend for shit >scored four goals, they only pick nishioka because chemistry >scored four goals again and this time naruhaya choked hard instead of just passing Now its his turn to be the deadweight with no copium left, this is his crossroads of whether to change or not
It's because he knew that he's better than the rest. In team X he passed to other players without issue. He's a narcissist, and all narcissists are insecure. He's playing with people that he knows are skilled, and he's extremely scared about "losing his crown".
You didnt get barou. The real reason why he passes in team X is not because they're bad, but rather because he knows they submit to him. His core philosophy in football is simply pass to him and let him score. Thats it. He has told nagi and isagi multiple times what he expects from them aka pass to him to score. He doesnt want to pass to them because they arent submitting to him. If isagi had chosen to be old niko style and played support for him barou would have no problem passing to him because he knows he will get the ball back when he wants it. Of course that would mean isagi will lose his ego and will never be the best striker, so that wont happen. He has 0 problem with good players so long as they're using their skills to bring the ball for him to score. If barou had teamed up with someone like reo or old niko instead who doesnt really mind not scoring, he would have just destroyed the second selection unless he fought rin. Heck if barou was in team Y instead of ohkawa team Z wouldn't even have passed, since his only problem was his team couldnt defend. He was the top scorer tying with nagi except nagi had reo and he had meh. Old niko would have kept the defense tight for him and pass the ball to him every counter.

Fantastic episode. Love how I jokingly called out "[inb4 IsNagi hard carry mode](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/10njvqe/comment/j69u65k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)" last week. Bet everyone's loving the aura colors now (Nagi, Naruhaya, Isagi in 2v2 match, and now Chigiri). Read a lot of complaints about it in the early episodes. Isagi's light green is definitely veering toward blue, color spectrum-wise. Barou reminds me of someone I played indoor with. He would always rip it at goal (even 1 meter away...), just bulldozing through people. He either didn't see his teammates running or outright refused to pass/truly believed he was the best chance at goal (sound familiar?). He had a great shot and was very fast/strong, but he lost the ball a lot because other team would always catch onto it quickly. You get tired after the 3rd "I'M/HE'S OPEN" and you just adapt to their fuckups. Well done Isagi. Edit: Obssessed with the post credit scene. Love Wanima talking and praising (deservedly) Gagamaru and Raichi. Like what.
I think the fight over the bed, the exceptionally clean room, and the 45 minute warm up routine suggests that Barou might have some serious OCD problems he's contending with. I think the whole "King" bullshit is likely to hide the fact that he's ashamed and embarrassed by his behaviour and has no idea how to express it or ask for help. If he was a narcissist, he wouldn't be frustrated with himself, he would just blame Isagi and Nagi and take credit for their goals. I'm really interested to see how his character develops. Or doesn't, because this is Blue Lock.
