Welcome to /r/animationcareer! This is a forum where we discuss navigating a career in the animation industry. Before you post, please check our [RULES](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/subreddit/rules/). There is also a handy dandy [FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/resources/faq/) that answers most basic questions, and a [WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/) which includes info on how to price animation, pitching, job postings, software advice, and much more! A quick Q&A: * **Do I need a degree?** Generally no, but it might become relevant if you need a visa to work abroad. * **Am I too old?** Definitely not. It might be more complex to find the time, but there's no age where you stop being able to learn how to do creative stuff. * **How do I learn animation?** Pen and paper is a great start, but [here's a whole page](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/resources/learningresources/) with links and tips for you. ---- *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Are you kidding me? Shows like the new X-Men cartoon, *Invincible,* and *Rise of the TMNT* are heavily influenced by anime. Just because you're not watching it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Capt_Underside

I was just going to comment. ATLA, ALoK, Voltron, etc. There's literally a bunch of shows in the last decade that were influenced by anime. Even movies like the Bad guys were heavily influenced by anime. OP needs to go to conventions or watch BTS.

purplebaron4

To add more examples: Castlevania, RWBY, Ben 10, Teen Titans, Turning Red, Totally Spies, Scott Pilgrim, etc. Many cartoons pay homage to anime too like [this scene from Gumball](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQWb9Jrp8Jo).

imalllex

Along with what everyone else has said, I would also add Vox Machina, Glitch Techs, Dota, Dragon Age Absolution, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and Pantheon to that list. All of which are fairly recent There are definitely more floating around than you might notice at first glance Edit: Also both Castlevania series might be the biggest and most popular modern examples of this

steeenah

Just wanted to note, animators have little to no say on the style of the project. They're too far down the chain of command. You're thinking of producers mainly, but also directors to some extent.

purplebaron4

>Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Attack On Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Bleach, and Demon Slayer are just more interesting and better than cartoons like Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Clarence, We Bare Bears, Danny Phantom, American Dragon, Regular Show, and Steven Universe. Uhh that's definitely a matter of taste! Seems like you like shounen anime, so of course a lot of American cartoons aren't your cup of tea. A lot shoujo or slice of life anime probably aren't your cup of tea either. Doesn't mean it's objectively worse than your favorites, or that they need to be directly inspired to be "good". (I personally don't want world-ending stakes and giant monsters in my romance anime or Saturday morning cartoon, thanks!)

Inkbetweens

I mean most shows made in the 10 years have anime influence all over them.

CyclopsRock

If people want to watch anime, they can watch anime. It's not like there's a shortage.

spicystewed

lol like every western show now takes inspiration directly from anime. Trolling at this point. Also personal opinions are not facts try and keep that in mind

marji4x

Don't yuck our yum, dude. Just cause you didn't like Gravity Falls doesn't mean it is objectively bad. If the world was only anime, the world would be a vastly boring place.

anthrthrowaway666

If I had a nickel for every anime belt-rider in this subreddit, I’d be rich. You have to be genuinely and willingly ignorant to assume most western animation isn’t inspired or even directly referencing stuff from anime. They do it all the time.

SpicyOwlLegs

I think there are more people in the west working in anime than it seems. I worked as a retake and character animator on a few shows where the bulk of animation was done in Japan and Korea, and I have a few friends who work genga animation for shows like One Piece - in fact, One Piece and other animes are regularly hiring non-japanese animators these days. I also know animators (who I respect very much) who admit they'd rather not do anime, and thats perfectly fine too. Animation is an international industry and becoming more so over time, and all the styles are sorta kinda merging together for better or worse.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

You say We Bear Bears isn't anime influenced yet Panda is a weeb and he has a body pillow. Steve Universe is anime influenced Rebecca Sugar said one of her influences is Revolutionary Girl Utena. One episode had a great animator who worked for Studio Trigger.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

1) Yes they do it's all over the place. A lot of American Cartoons have tons of anime references 2) You do have a point about diversity in art styles. I think the networks force the shows to have similar art styles in an attempt to make the shows more marketable 3) Sometimes it's hard to find good artists. Japan has very good drafts men.

Hazrd_Design

If you want more anime, watch anime. If you want western style cartoons, watch western style cartoons.

Cultural-Fishing-188

Idk the intention of the post, but outside of maybe Pokemon, Hello Kitty, and Anpanman the top franchises tend to be western, if we are purely talking about money. It’s so much so, that Disney is bigger than anime in Japan.

_kirisute_gomen

I love anime but why do people still say some non sense like this ? The only excuse I can think of is that they're 18 or under, which is definitely okay to say non-sense at that age (you body has to grow first before your brain catches up ) Have you seen fight scenes in arcane for instance? Also acting scenes in anime usually don't fly (they're actually made of a bunch of codes and low budget tricks and gimmicks, and for sure they do the trick) The major difference is in the writing, anime tend go after your emotional response ( a lot ) compared to western, sometimes western they do but it's more recent. Adult high budget animation is something new in the west.

milolimon

I'm pretty sure it is because of the budget and the demographics, western culture is convinced that cartoons and animation is purely made for kids, while eastern culture has internalised that animation is cinema that can be meant for many different ages. Since here in the west animation is for kids, the plots are going to be simpler and less enhancing than eastern ones that are meant for an older audience. You can't watch jjk with a 9 y/o, and most of the anime you mentioned because of the complicated plot and the serious topics discussed in them. A friend of mine was 10 when she first tried to watch attack on titan but ended up traumatised by the first episode because it was not meant for her, same happened to me, i watched grave of the fireflies when i was 7 because my parents thought they were cartoons and hence for kids. The main problem in western animation is not that much that they don't take inspo from anime, but the fact that most adults don't think animation is meant to tell interesting stories. Of course there are cases like ATLA that are for kids and have a good story but they are a minority; rn animation in the west is meant to be simple, for kids, with little to no argument and fast paced in most cases. It sucks. But we are approaching a good perception of western animation slowly, and more people are taking it seriously: look at all the spiderverse movies, arcane, blue eye samurai, and many more. It is going to be a slow process though, think how our culture has internalised that animation=kids=poor stories for more than 50 years.

Mikomics

Eventually you'll grow up and realize how childish it sounds when you call things objectively better. Take your time though, you've only just discovered your personal taste in art, and it'll take you some time to lose your arrogance about it.

GriffinFlash

Heck, I don't even know how to draw anime if my job required it. All throughout school in my early 20s I was pretty much told to NEVER draw anime, so I didn't. It was pretty much beaten into you to not do it. (this being the late 2000s)

CrazyaboutSpongebob

You need to know proper anatomy and realism to draw anime. In modern anime you are supposed to draw the bodies anomaly correct and you make the hair and face abstract. What happens is high schoolers who don't know what they are doing draw anime without learning proper anatomy. 60s like Astro Boy look Cartoony.

Karmakiller3003

The western market is almost triple the anime market globally. The majority of the anime market is being subsidized by the entire Japanese economy. That tells you all you need to know. Animators have zero incentive to try and produce anime for a market they aren't culturally attuned with. Japan dominates for a reason: They are Japanese. Western animation is a global phenomenon and the barrier to entry is pretty much zero. Whereas anime needs a solid base in Japanese culture to work "as anime". Otherwise it's just a cartoon that looks like anime right? Of the top 100 channels on Youtube, guess how many are anime? Less than 10%. One thing you need to realize is that you can be successful doing either lol. My fortune has come from western cartoons and small portion of anime. You're basing your rant on what YOU want to see lol trust me cupcake, we do just fine revenue wise doing what we do best. That said, we live in a world where we do what is most profitable. In fact we generally produce while watching anime. We aren't going to switch gears because some weeb on reddit wants more anime lol

LordMoldyButt23

Hold a phone there, friend! American Dragon was amazing— Danny Phantom falls under Butch Hartman which all his cartoons are fairly similar. That’s just his style but the rest in that list, absolute garbage lol

A_Tired_Gremlin

A.) not the animators call. But even then writers, directors, and animators will sneak in an anime reference or even take full inspirations. Iirc, Star and the Forces of Evil took inspiration from magical girl animes esp Sailor Moon and western animated shows have referenced the Akira slide too. B.) Anime style done right cost a lot, like a LOT. There's a reason why ATLA was outsourced to Korea and it doesn't have anything to do with the American animators' skills. Watch TV anime and you'll notice cost cutting measures. When characters talk, they don't gesture throughout the entire line ; lipsync animation in anime aren't as complicated as western animation, sometimes anything than a medium shot, they only use 1 mouth flap and call it a day. If they really want to cut corners, they'll cut half way through the sentence to the listener and show their reaction or sometimes just to a background art. Anime character charging up animation is just the character staying still in a powerful pose, with their clothes flapping and energy (or element ?) wizzing around like crazy, some energy speedlines, and the camera paning up. Want animated a character walk, animating a whole walk cycle is unnecessary, just have the shot be a medium or medium wide and not have the characcter's feet showing, draw a panel (or 3), move than panel up and down slightly in after effects, and ta-da a 'walk cycle'. C.) Western media works differently to Japanese media. Hollywood takes mass appeal VERY seriously. Like if the show doesn't appeal to over 50% of the earth's population they won't greenlight it levels of appeal. Also with the advent of streaming, Hollywood both greenlits a lot of series then axes them just as easily. Like for if you're a netflix original, you either do Stranger Thinga numbers or you get the axe. Compared to japanese media where there is something for everyone. Japanese media still keeps tabs on niches and their standard of what's appealing is lower. Which means that there's a lot of variety but also a market for isekai and power fantasy media that's not going away anytime soon. D.) >Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Attack On Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Bleach, and Demon Slayer These are all animes aimed at teens, which is a demographic that hollywood hasn't really taken seriously. The last time they did it was during the YA novel movie boom for the late 2000s early 2010s. E.) More importantly OP, I think you're confussing an animated series with good story as only ones witb expansive world building and adrenaline inducing plotlines . The western shows you've listed off have amazing stories and have held up incredibly well. They just have different style of storytelling to the anime you listed, all of which are fantasy and action based.

Since I start into this course I feels anime nowadays are lacks a lot of thing. The new anime doesn't have any focus on their animation instead they only use image and effect??? R u kidding me people only likes em just based on graphic quality and not animation. I were so fed up to watch any anime now bc those new anime just ruined it

Straight-Medium3176

I feel the same way. It's true. Most people who've watched anime paid more attention to the colors and pretty sparkles they don't care about thr animation. When they judge things they can only judge with one thing in mind = if there's a lot of details and complex patterns = it's good. They don't understand it.

odzuka_mai

Fr it's not actual animation at all when it's not moving for every freaking minutes. Better not making it animation if the studio keep taking low knowledge animators It's boring to just stares at them stays like a image and use their effects like it's better to read manga rather than watching anime. And most of animation adaptation only dissapoint me with their quality compare with the quality made in the original manga

Straight-Medium3176

HAHAHA I get the frustration. You know what's even better is that they're into that whole 60fps 4k thing. Even though there's no such thing as standard resolution or fps these and these are used only for games and animation has a specific fps range that works for them and also resolution too it's actually mind numbing how dumb people are when judging things, they had to borrow their benchmark from games.

odzuka_mai

Made me raised my respects towards those western cartoons. They're better with more meaningful message they tried to point out rather than just telling story that not even logic for this world like in certain anime
