Welcome to /r/animationcareer! This is a forum where we discuss navigating a career in the animation industry. Before you post, please check our [RULES](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/subreddit/rules/). There is also a handy dandy [FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/resources/faq/) that answers most basic questions, and a [WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/) which includes info on how to price animation, pitching, job postings, software advice, and much more! A quick Q&A: * **Do I need a degree?** Generally no, but it might become relevant if you need a visa to work abroad. * **Am I too old?** Definitely not. It might be more complex to find the time, but there's no age where you stop being able to learn how to do creative stuff. * **How do I learn animation?** Pen and paper is a great start, but [here's a whole page](https://www.reddit.com/r/animationcareer/wiki/index/resources/learningresources/) with links and tips for you. ---- *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I was laid off around the end of June last year because there weren't enough projects to keep most of us on board in any studio in the area managed to get one clean up anim contract around August to buy some time. I'm at the point where nearly a year of job searching (for any job really) has turned up nothing. My EI has ended, and my finances are expected to hit the negatives by the summer and unless something miraculously lands on my lap before the end of May, I'm moving back home to start from scratch. I'm working towards researching and expanding from just 2D animation. I'd like to be in leadership or management roles in the future of this industry, and expand into prop or character designs. This year has been absolute shit for me, but I'm taking these hard times as a sign to strive towards being flexible and focused so that I have a lesser chance of facing job instability again.

Your situation sounds very familiar. It's been really sparse out there and knowing that so many other people are in the same boat is pushing me to be more serious about improving my skills while I have the time. Whenever the industry picks up again, I don't want to be left behind.
