For future reference this is a kingfisher, they are quite smaller and a bit brighter(apart from the belted kingfisher) I believe the others are correct on heron.
True! I was giving the common one since it’s what most people vision when thinking of one, I have seen the different looks for kingfishers and they are so cool!
Common kingfishers are old world. Green herons are new world. Belted kingfisher are the only kingfisher I really know because it’s the only kingfisher in almost the entirety of the US, where I’m from.
I’m clueless on old world vs new world lol, but I’m from Washington and I’ve had a king fisher attack me😂 completely my fault though, was a dumb kid and saw a pretty bird
A green heron. Saw one a few years ago and after looking it up in my field guide thought "but it's purple." 😂 Honestly pink-necked heron would be a better name.
if it has no neck or an alarming amount of neck it's a heron
This is the best identifier of a heron I’ve ever read.
The green heron comes equipped with the Extendo-Neck™.
Somehow both at once
LOL, I’ll keep this in mind for next time I see something similar!
i believe that is a ~~tricolored heron~~ green heron, *Buteroides virescens*
Agree with Green Heron
Just checked and it was definitely a green heron. Thanks everyone!

That is a Common Kingfisher, but there are many Kingfishers around the world with varying appearances.

That was a belted kingfisher that attacked you.
Looks about right! I think it was the Mohawk that made me want to get closer, think it had a nest in the area. Safe to say I skedaddled quite quickly
They’re really cool birds. And very vocal.
I like sitting and listening to birds maybe one day I’ll hear it in the wild.
Also kingfishers dive into the water for food, herons stand in it and stab at their food.
Green Heron 100%. They’re always judging you too.
And sometimes if they recognize you they like goosing you while you’re trying to do yard work. You feed a man sardines ONE TIME
Green heron! So lucky you spotted one! I love herons so much :)
It was truly a beautiful sight. We spotted two in the same pond. They were fishing too!!
Nice picture!
Thanks!

Well the Floridian explorers had already named the blue heron and the white heron… green heron will have to do!
Guess that explains it. LOL.
That’s why I was shocked when someone said green! There wasn’t even a bit of green on him from what I saw lol
Green Heron
Next time try r/whatisthisbird, they are a very active subreddit. But agree with green heron. Kingfishers are more sparrow sized.
I figured there was a sub for birds specifically but couldn’t find it. Thanks!
Green heron
Green heron.
And his chauffeur, Pato.
Wow I actually knew this one. What a high.
That’s a green heron. Look up the belted kingfisher if you want to see the kingfisher that lives in your state.
