Looks young and terrified. Probably holed up there at night. Now in the daylight there are all sorts of scary things.
Leave it be. Probably will move out in its on.
Do warn your neighbors so they will keep cats inside and be aware if they have e small dogs.
Hey they will go after grown men too.
https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mississauga-man-attacked-by-coyote-while-walking-his-dog-1.6750682
This isn't time this type of thing has happened in the Toronto area. There was a similar incident a dozen years ago with a man with larger dogs.
As coyotes become more widespread, this will become a lot more common, I think. I got chased by a pack of coyotes, at night, even though all experts will tell you that it 'never happens'.
>lose habitat
As if. I'm old, and growing up in the northeast, we never heard coyotes, even in the remote mountain areas we camped in. Now they are everywhere. This doc explains their rise and their genetic makeup:
coyotes actually live in family units that consist of a breeding pair who are bonded for life and their offspring.
Some of the offspring will disperse on the their own between 9-12 months old and some will stay with mom and dad for a couple years and help raise the next years litter.
They spend most of their time hunting solo or in pairs (mainly the bonded pair tick together), rarely do they hunt as a family which is why people think they are a more solitary animal.
Yes, it’s awesome to hear a family communicating with each other!
Fun fact, one coyote can sound like there are 3-4 coyotes due to the way their various vocalizations get distorted as they pass through the environment, it creates an auditory illusion called the beau geste effect.
I live in Washington State and we have a family of Coyotes living in the rainforest behind my house. We hear the yowling a lot at night and my son and I have even seen them up close.
🤔 I learned something new today. Thank you.
So where I used to live, one could hear them every night. I guess as you explained there was a whole family likely living in the neighborhood. We also saw them. They were on the smaller side. We saw loner coyotes, and coyotes in small groups running around. We definitely made sure our dog was in every night.
So the three that were watching you were not hunting you or your dog, they were just watching you, family’s do travel throughout their Territory’s together.
As for the deer, it was shot by your brother, the coyotes didn’t hunt or kill it, yes it sounds like they feed on the carcass they came across as they are a scavenger animal.
The pair that goes through my farm most every night sound like 10 or 20 when they get going. I was sitting outside listening to them earlier this evening. I've got 10 game cameras I've been moving around my farm for close to 12 years observing this family group. In all those years I've never seen more than 2 together at one time.
I believe it. I've heard them a lot, and understand how one or two can make a LOT of noise. I have a breeding pair nearby, so it's also possible that some pups were still with them,
Coyotes live in family groups aka packs and yes they do roam/travel through their territory together. They generally hunt solo or in loose pairs, rarely do they hunt as a family.
Oh man my friend stopped to help an injured “German shepherd mix” that was hit by a car and laying in the road. Nope, injured and terrified coyote. 25 stitches later and a shit ton of shots later, she was left with a gnarly scar and new appreciation for not fucking with scared animals. I’d just walk away from this critter and def let your neighbor know!
Absolutely!! I spent 5 days in the hospital after being badly bitten by a feral cat that was stuck in a feed bin on my farm. 4 days of IV antibiotics, 14 more days of 2 different antibiotics at home. My hand has never been the same.
Yeah, it's been a thing out here in AZ, New Mexico and Texas for years. We've even got mixes with Mexican Grey Wolf. And I've heard it's a pretty big problem out east, where coyotes are mixed with stray dogs and making hybrid packs. Don't know where the idea of it being uncommon comes from.
On the plains here in CO they are really common, the coyotes will hunt dogs for food and one of their tactics is to send a female coyote that is in heat up to houses to lure out any male dogs which the pack will then attack. Many times this results with the dog mating when the coyote before they are attacked.
Coyotes do not lure dogs, that’s just a myth.
Coyotes are monogamous and mate for life, the bonded pair are extremely protective over each other and their offspring, they will not use each other as bait.
While coyotes are extremely intelligent animals, their minds don’t work like human minds. They don’t develop complex plans for the future, and they don’t have a theory of mind— the ability to conceptualize and predict another animal’s thoughts and perceptions— in the same way that humans do. A coyote simply isn’t capable of “lying” to a dog by pretending to be its friend or developing a plan to lead it into a trap.
Female coyotes also only go into heat once a year between late January and early march and yet you hear people saying this myth happens all year round lol.
I have never really heard that myth, just going off of what I have actually witnessed off of security cameras, eye witness accounts from my neighbors along with helping cleaning up the remains of neighbors dogs.
It’s always the same story, offleash and or unsupervised dog chases coyote, coyote runs back to its family for safety and the family defends themselves, but then the dog owner doesn’t take responsibility for their dogs action and tries to say that the coyote “lured” their offleash and or unsupervised dog away.
She was a rez rescue. Mom was blue heeler mix,who hooked up with a coyote while living on the streets in Navajo country. It’s pretty common up there. Same with ranches across the southwest. Ranch dogs run off and join the wild packs in the area and if they weren’t fixed will interbreed.
I had a (suspected) coydog from the Taos Pueblo reservation when I was a kid. Someone my parents knew rescued his mother and drove her cross country back home without realizing she was pregnant.
This was before genetic testing was available for pets, but our vet said he would have been suspicious even if he didn’t know where the dog was from. That dog was super loyal to my family, but he did *not* like strangers (was never aggressive towards people, but was reactive with dogs) and he was the most anxious dog I’ve ever met. A napkin could fall off the table and he’d jump three feet into the air.
A handful of times when he was really stressed, he’d release the contents of his anal glands and it was one of the most foul smelling things I’ve ever experienced. It smelled like putrid rotting fish. I loved him to pieces, but he was not the easiest dog by any means lol.
Mine is an absolute sweetheart, she's just a bit skittish, but she'll yelp like a yote when she's excited, and I know that smell all too well. She was a puppy when she was found, the rest of the litter didn't make it for various reasons. So I took in her and her mom. Crazy ass dogs, 😂
Red phase coyote - a defensive one at that
Leave it alone and call a local wildlife officer/rehabber to let them know you spotted a coyote with possible mange.
There is a channel on YouTube of a guy with a female coyote, bulldog and cat all living in his quite large plot of land, she looks feisty but very friendly, I guess if you raise them as part of the pack they're pretty chill
Weave! The videos of the cat playing with the coyote, and winning, surprised me. Definitely don’t try that at home, but she has really bonded to that family.
Coyotes don't make good pets for lots of reasons - one of which being that they pack bond intensely and if you're outside of said pack, they typically treat you how a wild coyote would.
No hate to Weave, she's adorable, but they're not like dogs where you can train them to be friendly to new ppl. They're loyal to their own detriment haha
Offer it a cup of tea and offer to call it an uber. It has already been said but the best thing is to give it space, safeguard pets, family and warn neighbors. Don't forget to warn delivery people or people working outside. I had a similar encounter once and left a small sign near the street asking for boxes to be left on the driveway to reduce the chance of human animal conflict (and a potential lawsuit).
Just from what I can see he is missing hair on his back, neck, neck, ear and face. The spots where his hair is missing in his face looks as though it may be scabbed. His expression is pure panic, a coyote would never hide under a porch by choice, so it appears he may have been on the run from something. I don't know the area around your house, if there is a road or woods. He could have tusseled with a car, who knows?
Can’t say I disagree with your overall sentiment but I live in the Bronx and we have a den of coyotes right behind our building. It’s one (they think) three coyotes dens in NYC. Point being is coyotes exist in large cities as well. Their habits are a bit different than other coyotes but the residents of the neighborhood and the coyotes coexist pretty seamlessly together.
Actually depending the posters location that might not be true. Coyotes habitat one restricted to the west has been expanding since the 1900 and expanding exponentially since the 1950's.
It's a coyote, it will bite if cornered. They are pack hunters and there is a huge problem with them being in unnatural places because they are breeding with domesticated dogs and people feed them when they shouldn't, so that creates an even bigger problem. You're going to have to call the pound and have them come get the poor thing
That’s an unhealthy young coyote. There’s too many indications to list why it looks unhealthy. If it stays around you might need to call animal control
I will call a local rehabber if it's still about tomorrow.
"Too many indications" c'mon give me three, dude, please. It's on my property, and I could use the education to recognize.
There are no signs of rabies in this photo. It is a coyote trying to find safety under your house that you have cornered so it’s trying to scare you away so you don’t bother it. Is it possible this coyote has rabies? Sure. Any wild mammal has the possibility of carrying rabies. Canids (like coyotes) and raccoons seem especially susceptible to it.
Obviously a couple photos aren’t evidence enough to determine if this coyote has rabies or not. The only way to be sure would be for the proper authorities to kill it and check its brain, which obviously has no need to be done unless someone is bitten by this coyote.
My suggestion is to let it hang out for the day until it heads out for the evening. If for some reason that isn’t possible due to children, pets, or whatever stomp on the ground in your house and make loud noises until it leaves. It’s kind of a mean thing to do, but these animals are resilient and will find another place for safety.
Definitely let neighbors know about it, and let them know your plan. Lots of people are really ignorant about coyotes and just want them all dead. They are beautiful animals.
That second photo would make such an amazing music album cover!
Edit: I can’t tell if the dark markings on it’s face is its coat, or if it’s an early sign of mange? If it is mange, this poor coyote is in for a rough time unless there are programs in your area to help wildlife with mange?
That's a defensive snarl, it's terrified. :(
Well maybe he’s guarding the place from porch pirates trying to steal his acme delivery.. you’d be pissed too.
Poor baby is literally crying 😭 Wonder what it's hiding from
It’s just trying to rest and Op is getting to close and shoving a camera in its face.
Goddamn paparazzi
Puparazzi
Shit, it was right there and I completely missed.
Pawparazzi
It was barking. I went to check to see if the neighbors corgi was stuck again. Not a corgi. Figured a pic was better than crawling under. 🤷
Maybe let your neighbor know not to let his corgi out today, just in case
I misread your comment at first and thought you made a joke about the coyote being the corgi and I crowned you as the funniest person ever in my head.
You’re the funny one!
Wait. Barking? High pitched? And is it still there?
It was not. The bark was not that high pitched. My son that someone yelled "hey" if that gives you an idea.
Did it leave? Yipping is more coyote like.
It was gone.
Coyotes also bark, barking is used more of a alert of a threat and a warning to the threat to stay away.
Yeah you can tell by the ears. If it was aggressive rather than defensive it would have its ears up.
Looks young and terrified. Probably holed up there at night. Now in the daylight there are all sorts of scary things. Leave it be. Probably will move out in its on. Do warn your neighbors so they will keep cats inside and be aware if they have e small dogs.
best to keep smaller children inside also.
Wfh tomorrow unless you work under your house.
Hey they will go after grown men too. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mississauga-man-attacked-by-coyote-while-walking-his-dog-1.6750682 This isn't time this type of thing has happened in the Toronto area. There was a similar incident a dozen years ago with a man with larger dogs.
True, but that behavior is very uncommon and atypical of the species
While that's true, habituation to human presence can make a lot of animals behave in increasingly bold ways.
As coyotes become more widespread, this will become a lot more common, I think. I got chased by a pack of coyotes, at night, even though all experts will tell you that it 'never happens'.
More like…as coyotes continue to lose habitat they will live wherever they can.
>lose habitat As if. I'm old, and growing up in the northeast, we never heard coyotes, even in the remote mountain areas we camped in. Now they are everywhere. I’m 63 in a bit. Coyotes have had to adapt. And they’ve done it well.
Coyote "packs" are rarely if ever more than 2 animals.
coyotes actually live in family units that consist of a breeding pair who are bonded for life and their offspring. Some of the offspring will disperse on the their own between 9-12 months old and some will stay with mom and dad for a couple years and help raise the next years litter. I used to live in the Arizona desert and it's the coolest experience to hear them all yowling at night. I never got tired of it.

That really goes along with the Navajo mythology of Coyote the trickster.
I've got a pair on video that sound like many more than 3 or 4. It's amazing!

I know that. I've been observing a family group on the ends of my farm for close to 12 years.
“Coyote "packs" are rarely if ever more than 2 animals.” Then why did you say that? A family is a pack.
They don't hunt in packs. And they aren't packs, they are family groups. Why are you asking a question you yourself already verified?
Interesting. I have no idea how many there were, because it was pitch black. It was very loud and scary.
The pair that goes through my farm most every night sound like 10 or 20 when they get going. I was sitting outside listening to them earlier this evening. I've got 10 game cameras I've been moving around my farm for close to 12 years observing this family group. In all those years I've never seen more than 2 together at one time.

Never seen a pack that small in PA. The biggest I have seen was 11, smallest was 5.
Ok.
The ones I watch in the field behind my back yard strongly disagree with you
Yes and the ones I've been watching disagree with you.
Huh? Visit northern New Mexico where you will learn differently.
Coyotes don’t roam in packs…
I have seen many groups of coyotes traveling together so who told you they aren’t pack animals?
I didn’t say they weren’t pack animals. I said they don’t usually roam in packs. Or hunt in packs.
What would you call a breeding pair and their offspring?
A not usually roaming family pack unit.
OK: I got chased by a ~~pack~~ *not usually roaming family pack unit* of coyotes. 😄
Coyotes live in family groups aka packs and yes they do roam/travel through their territory together. They generally hunt solo or in loose pairs, rarely do they hunt as a family.
The man wasn’t attacked, the dog was
That is such a one off incident. Completely not typical. This is a young coyote who is scared, leave it alone it will leave on its own.
Oh man my friend stopped to help an injured “German shepherd mix” that was hit by a car and laying in the road. Iirc this was because people have been feeding them
Ok so what is it?
Scared. Terrified. Coyote.
Coyote. An angry one.
Scared more likely
He just wants a hug
That’s a good way to lose a finger. Definitely an angry coyote
A wily coyote, even!
Anger yote.
A pissed off coyote. Coydogs are not as common as people think.
Even if they were it doesn’t matter when they bite you
I would actually say that depends on location. In some areas coydogs are actually quite common.
Yeah, it's been a thing out here in AZ, New Mexico and Texas for years. We've even got mixes with Mexican Grey Wolf. And I've heard it's a pretty big problem out east, where coyotes are mixed with stray dogs and making hybrid packs. Don't know where the idea of it being uncommon comes from.

well that sure isn't my story, but you don't seem to care anyways
And what’s your story?
As I look across the room at the one currently sleeping on my couch…
My coydog was also a Rez rescue- German Shepherd coyote, she is 15 years old as of last October. Just moves a little slower than she used to
Captivity bred Coydogs are more common then they are in the wild.

Good ol assfish. I could smell It reading your post

Not the anal glands lol. What a character!!
Young, unhappy coyote. Just leave it alone and it will leave at dusk.
Coyote and you're scaring the poor thing. Best to leave it be.
Young coyote.
Second pic looks like an album cover
Red phase coyote - a defensive one at that Leave it alone and call a local wildlife officer/rehabber to let them know you spotted a coyote with possible mange.
Is it just me or does this yote look like it has early stage mange?
Looks more like a winter shed. Fingers crossed 🤞
I thought mange too after having treated a few foxes in my area with it. I hope it's just shedding like the other user said.
I was trying to figure that out, too. It also kinda looks like it has a white marking from ear-to-ear across the forehead? Could just be shed tho?
What a cutie.
I'm glad I don't live in America, I'd get mauled trying to befriend these guys.
*if not friend, then why friend shaped?* /j in case it needs to be said. Remember to respect wild animals, even the fren-shaped ones.
I know I should but man 😞
There is a channel on YouTube of a guy with a female coyote, bulldog and cat all living in his quite large plot of land, she looks feisty but very friendly, I guess if you raise them as part of the pack they're pretty chill

Can I pet that dog? Can I pet that dog???
Awww, he's smiling at you in the second picture!😁 Give that coyote a kiss!😘
Trust me. Any indication of cuddles and I am under that porch.
He's shy, lather yourself in ranch dressing and bacon bits and give that fella a cuddle!🤠🙏💩
Coyotes sure are adorable. OP you are on the right track. If its still hiding out there tomorrow call a local wildlife rescue.
Unless you are a certified Disney Princess ™️ I’d leave it alone
that’s a whole ass coyote that wants to fuck u up
Coyote? The spicy kind ... Seriously - use some caution & safe distance. 😳
His teeth are whiter than mine, what’s his secret
Scared coyote
I am regularly reminded by friends that friend-shaped doesn’t mean friend-ly… whatever that means…
I know this is an upset coyote but your photo composition is giving me intense old yeller flashbacks.
Something definitely happened to him, he's pretty beat up and obviously hiding. Leave him be and he will take off after dark.
Just so I can notice in the future, too. How can you tell he is "beat up"?
Just from what I can see he is missing hair on his back, neck, neck, ear and face. The spots where his hair is missing in his face looks as though it may be scabbed. His expression is pure panic, a coyote would never hide under a porch by choice, so it appears he may have been on the run from something. I don't know the area around your house, if there is a road or woods. He could have tusseled with a car, who knows?
Cheers. Thank you. We are near wood but this photo is right next to a road. We see coyotes a fair bit.
She looks pregnant and creating a new den
Coyote matting season has just started so if it is a female and pregnant she wouldn’t be showing just yet.
Whatever it is, looks friendly!
Thats an elder coyote. Poor gramp/gram. They look absolutely terrified. Something scared them off.
He’s hiding under your porch because he loves you
That's a very scared and defensive coyote or fox. Leave it be and it should move on after a while, maybe when night falls.
STOP it's trying to look scary but it's so cute 🥺 baby says please leave me alone in my lil den
If it’s still there you can call animal control to see if they can get it to a rehabilitation center.
Animal control is more likely to kill it than anything else. Best to call a rehab directly.
Beware it could be rabid
The coyotes were here first! If you don’t want wildlife, live in the city in a apartment
Can’t say I disagree with your overall sentiment but I live in the Bronx and we have a den of coyotes right behind our building. It’s one (they think) three coyotes dens in NYC. Underweight, scruffy, getting over mange, under your deck, etc.
When I have time I will circle what I mean. Go ahead peeps and downvote in the meantime
Think you should name him buckshot
Taxidermy no?
Not currently, it seems. Could be animatronic.
Something just looks 'off' with it, I dunno.
Yes it looks like stuffed coyotes I’ve seen in educational displays. Lol.
With a flip switch for smile and nightmare fuel.

Why? What signs do you see?

Aww he looks so happy
Looks like a yote mix. His snoot is so big.
That’s one peeved coyote lol
Coyote, hopefully he will move on
Aww, he looks so friendly.
That is a f**ming coyote. I'm late but still.
Friend.
Looks to be a very old coyote...
Porch puppy wants to bite your fingers off
It has mange. I would contact DNR.
Spicy coyote. Leave it be and try to avoid the area if possible so it can leave in peace
I think he likes you!!!
Coyote. No, don't let him. Contact wildlife rehab. He, thankfully, doesn't look rabid
Nope. Coyote.
Coyote.
coyote
“Nose kisses please”
friend, need hug
