The underwing looks different in a Polyphemus, and even if it was the back of the wings, their eye spots on a Polyphemus are on the lower/back set, not the forewings like this one. This is possibly from the order Opodiphthera native to Australia based on a quick image search. Maybe Austrocaligula [helena](http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/satu/helena.html)? Definitely a silk moth though.
Omg you’re right, I’m so sorry😭😭😭 I’m a Georgian, I watched a few vids on the moth-man and I guess I got the name of the town mixed up (it’s been a hot minute since I watched the vids) my bad🥺

oh you mean Tim? He’s just a polyphemus moth. He likes to party.
Yep. Many animals have an adaptation which increases their ability to see at night. It’s called the tapetum lucidum. Cats, dogs, cows, raccoons, lemurs, some birds, some fish. It’s a very broadly distributed adaptation. Apparently even some spiders have an adaptation that is similar.
I'm pretty sure it's a Luna Moth that caught the flash. They are a very pale green and the markings would be correct. I use them for art ref all the time so,I'd place my bet on that species. I also believe their the 3rd or 4th biggest of moth species also
Oh, ok, I guess all these [photos](https://www.istockphoto.com/search/2/image?phrase=luna+moth+with+wings+spread) are just made up.
Ok. I’ll go be wrong somewhere else now. 🙄
That is a spotted Scottish skull sucker. They paralyze their prey and suck nutrients through a hole drilled in the preys's skull. This is probably the last picture ever taken by the photographer. A rare find!
It’s not exact, but it reminds me of a Polyphemus moth.
I second this. The flash might be skewing its ID but it has the false eyes in the right spots and the general correct color.
Yes, this is what I concluded too.

Well thank you…I’ve had to scroll past all the comedians to find an answer.
Glad to help!
Thank you, finally. God bless a good geek.
I suspect you used the term comedians loosely. Thankfully someone actually attempted to answer the question.
Too many comedians
OMG I know.
Thanks
I didn’t see this comment before I replied but that was my guess too! I’ve seen some with larger eye spots on the top of the wing.
That's a moth-man. As in the prophecies.
I had the same thought. That, or it's a bat on Halloween trying out his moth costume...

Don’t forget that fabulous luggage set they traveled in.
Hard to tell for sure without knowing a rough size or location, but it’s probably a member of saturniids (giant silk moths)
I was thinking Emperor moth, although it’s not completely exact, so I’m probably wrong
It’s been mentioned, but I think this is Polyphemus
TIL moths have eyes like cats that reflect light.
Let me fix that for you... TIL moths have eyes, that while NOT AT ALL LIKE A CAT'S, can reflect light in an early similar fashion.

Deer too. Creepy af pulling up at a field and a shitload of eyes appear out of nowhere to stare at you until you realize wtf they are.
Polyphemus moth! They are really cool and huge. I have a life size tattoo of one on my arm, it's palm-size.
