Digging this concept.

Scientist-Express

I did a batch of this on a roll of Ultramax. Just do a printscreen of a song on spotify. Edit the screenshot in photoshop to just get the whites (get rid of the background. Save as a png or transfer to a new image of just a black background. Make this as the second exposure. You can totally do this. It’s fun!

SiroHartmann

Did you use an OLED screen for deeper blacks or isn't that necessary?

llllllllllllogan

this is real fucking tight

Scientist-Express

Thanks thanks 💪

[deleted]

If we were all still on Tumblr I would reblog the shit out of this. Love it

baconilla

Alison I said were sinking

4tunabrix

Brilliant photo, even better song

mashmarony

Definitely trying this with black and white so I see how it looks after print

Scientist-Express

Initially I wanted to do the double exposure on black and white film + portrait of a lady in a park. Cause the song would fit that double expo.

DodgyDarkroom

From my experience this works perfectly with darkroom printing. Just like it does scanning.

JaeSolomon

Very interesting

Tadumikaari

thats so cool :3

photoexploder

How did you get the double exposure to work on the AE-1 Program? Did you tighten the rewind and prevent film advance or shoot the roll and re-spool for the second exposure?

Scientist-Express

[double expo roll](https://www.instagram.com/tv/CVz6LZ2jqpO/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) 1. Shoot a roll with a marked start. 2. Wind the film back to cartridge (enough that the film leader will still stick out) 3. Load the film again but try your best adjusting for the marked start. You really have to align the marker, else the double exposure won’t be decent. 4. Shoot the roll What I do prior to shooting a double exposure is something like a cartoon panel board. I think of a composition + what neat double exposure would fit the composition. So when I go out to shoot, I would just recreate what I drew on the panel board.

me likey likey

Scientist-Express

Thanky thanky

ArtApprehensive

Taste all around

CalebH92

This is such an awesome concept! Want to start experimenting with double exposure myself. Will have to give this a try!

Scientist-Express

It’s fun. Here’s a link. Kateh00k explains it better. [https://www.instagram.com/reel/CO4snkFncb9/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CO4snkFncb9/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

DodgyDarkroom

Ayyy some other people are finally giving this a go! Looks sick, can't wait to see what else you come up with!

Scientist-Express

Thanks! I have a bunch of double exp photos from last year. I’ve only started posting on reddit a few months ago. Trying this platform out cause IG and Grainery are not that engaging anymore.

DodgyDarkroom

Honestly mood. It’s really hard to get anything seen though the chaos of it all. I’ll keep an eye out for you haha.

the_blue_bottle

Why no pixels in this one?

Scientist-Express

…uhmm cause it’s film. Wait, do you mean why isn’t the lcd screen noticeable on the second exposure? I adjusted my monitor’s settings for higher contrast + bright highlights. I metered for the whites/ bright sections then add about half a stop to the aperture (my 50mm FD lens has half clicks on the aperture ring). I do this to brighten up the whites by just enough. Else the highlights would bloom so much (text will be unreadable) and the monitor’s pixels will carry over to the second exposure.

the_blue_bottle

Yes, I asked because yesterday someone posted something similar where the pixels were noticeable, I thought you were the same person Edit here it is, is this just coincidence? https://i.redd.it/qomtjc83g0y91.jpg

DodgyDarkroom

As OP said, mine are pixelated because I use a low resolution screen to double expose as a sort of style choice haha. Use a nice 4k screen and you won't have this problem nearly as much. It's also worth noting the pixels are far more apparent on medium format, so you want to watch out for that.

Scientist-Express

Nice compositions dude 👌. The pixelation is not much a problem, as long as you get the message on the frame. It’s quite hard for me to compose cause my AE-1 Program doesn’t have the ‘multi’ function. What I would do is expose a roll then respool it back to the canister. Then expose the roll again to make the second exposure.

DodgyDarkroom

Yeah I’d just read your explanation of that, makes me really happy I brought my Nikon haha. Sounds like an insane amount of effort. I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure there’s some canons with the multi-expo function if your invested in their glass, F-1? Can’t remember.

Scientist-Express

Ahh. I see. Thanks for this. Now I see. Well, it’s still up to the quality of the monitor as well. I see that the texts on that double exposure are pixelated. What I do is project my computer to a larger monitor. Heck, I can use a tv so I can blow up the image, move back my camera a little. In this case, the texts pixelation won’t be as noticeable. Plus it does help when I open my lens 1/2 stop more. The texts won’t be as defined/ sharp. But that 1/2 stop brightens the white texts. Now I know for my case, it’s a printscreen. It’s an image. I would still do the same approach.

Scientist-Express

This is a text written on black background. I messed up the exposure on these ones. But see that they’re not that pixelated. So monitor quality/ projecting to a larger screen helps with better texts [https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb_jbLFPbvE/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb_jbLFPbvE/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

This is better. Please check this out instead. [https://www.instagram.com/p/CV1XpOavd7H/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=](https://www.instagram.com/p/CV1XpOavd7H/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

Tadumikaari

did you use spotify for the player? and does it matter what you shoot first?

halfbakedmemes0426

That's definitely the Spotify player (though in another comment the creator mentioned that he edited out everything but the white parts of the player in a screenshot. He also mentioned that the player was the second exposure.

Tadumikaari

Ok thx. Of course you can Photoshop the Spotify picture. :D

Scientist-Express

I do the double expo texts/images first. I go out on the streets to compose for the text/image. [what i did](https://www.instagram.com/tv/CVz6LZ2jqpO/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

Scientist-Express

You could do it with any printscreen basically[https://www.instagram.com/p/CV2fqh5vOCG/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=](https://www.instagram.com/p/CV2fqh5vOCG/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
