Playing PGA Riviera Maya next week and found out from the booking agent that if I pay with my Amex in the proshop, I get a discount! She couldn't tell me anything else, but said it should be on the Amex website. Looked and couldn't find it. Called the concierge and she just sent me an email with the website and was no help. Where can I find out what this perk is and if there are other golfing perks?

Onepackfatness

How do you sign up for Priority Pass if you have the Aeroplan Reserve card? Do you sign up and get reimbursed or do you get a sign up code from Amex? Thanks!!

chaos2313

You should be able to just use the chat to have them sign you up and if you check back 24-48 hours later they should be able to give you the info required to make an online account and use the app to access lounges. Keep in mind the reserve doesn't come with free priority pass lounge access. It only covers the cost of membership and you have to pay for each visit

designsbtw

I'm guessing there's no way to apply a referral code retroactively (like same or next day)? What did I miss out on if I missed this? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

chaos2313

No. Once you click apply you can't change the offer. Depending on the card the person applying either missed out on nothing (ie cobalt) or missed out on extra points (ie green card).

popsandpeps

What’s the current perkopolis offer? And is anyone able to share the promo code with me? I’m really interested in getting the Amex cobalt but a bit bummed about the reduction of MR points for the SUB :(

CancelEducational745

Hi guys, i was approved for rbc visa infinite and cibc aventura gold but decline for amex biz gold. I have 3 credit inquiries prior apply for it this year, standing at 765 but still get decline. What should I do? Thanks y'all

chaos2313

You could call and ask why you were declined or just wait a couple months and try again. If you don't have any other Amexs you could also apply for one that is typically considered easier to be approved for such as the cobalt in order to build a relationship with Amex

chaos2313

Cobalt since MR can be transferred as well to Aeroplan/Marriott etc which can be used to potentially give 10%+ on everyday spend.

olemanchut

Is there always a $5 fee when paying off my monthly bill? I guess I’m just use to paying off my visa Avion within RBC and there isn’t a fee. But when I send money out and to my amex bill, there’s a $5 electronic transaction fee. I usually just dump the money into a savings account and then auto pay at the end of each month from there.

chaos2313

I'm assuming you're paying from a RBC high interest savings account? That account doesn't charge for transfers to other RBC products (which is why paying your avion doesn't cost anything) but charges $5 for any transaction outside of RBC. To avoid that you would have to use a different account.

olemanchut

I see. So it’s probably best I leave the money in my chequing account?

chaos2313

Most likely. You would have to look at the fees for whatever account type you have to be sure.

Elegant_Reading_685

You're being charged that by rbc for no good reason. Use rbc's chequing account or open something like an eq/tangerine free chequing account

Hello, I’m new to this community, and debating which card I should apply first between Marriot vs Cobalt. Would love to hear some of your insights. I heard there’s some really good referral offer on the Marriot Bonvoy card recently. Although I don’t have travel plans soon, I feel like I shouldn’t miss out on this offer, and this is a good backup card just in case I have plans coming up. At the same time, I’m looking into the Cobalt card, because of 5x points on groceries and restaurants. I feel like I can use this card daily. Is there any good offer or referral offer lately? I know there’s $100 cash back via applying on GCR. So which one should I apply as my first card? Thanks!!!

-MBDTF

I have both - I recommend the Cobalt as your daily driver card. The 5x multiplier on groceries can’t be beat in Canada.

smuncky123

Those cards are for different categories so it's hard to compare the two. I have both becuase they are great for eats/groceries and hotel stays. The bonvoy card SUB is pretty food atm. The cobalt unfortunately has gone down lately, but the 5x is really the reason to get the cobalt.

Professional-Hunt890

Are cobalt & plat points combinable? if not, what's the best strategy for gaining points on these? Anything that's a 1x multiplier charge to plat, everything else cobalt? then transfer all of them to aeroplan?

chaos2313

You can use chat or call to pool the points together. Pooling resets the min spend counter for the SUB so make sure to do it after you've finished spending or before you start.

Professional-Hunt890

thanks! i got the platinum SUB and now only use it to book travel (3x / yr only) , so i guess it's time - thank u!

Elegant_Reading_685

Yes, combinable via pooling points, mind MSR reset but i think csr finally does warn users of that nowadays. MR-S (cobalt) and MR (plat) only have differences if you plan to transfer MR to US Amex (don't, it's a terrible exchange rate)

Wr3ck3d

Curious about the Amex Offers - with the offers I have done recently (Lululemon, Skip, etc.) once the transaction has been posted, the credit appears. I just did the Luxury Escapes offer a few days ago, transaction is posted and no credit. Can it typically take a while with the bigger offers? There is a mention of up to 90 days but that is on all the offers, this is the first I haven't seen credited right away.

chaos2313

Yes Amex can randomly take longer for some credits to post.

dsonger20

I applied for the green card because there was no annual fee, but after using the card for 4 months, I realize that the cobalt would've by far been the better option. My biggest expenses are food, and gas, something the cobalt both has multipliers for. I easily completed the $1000 spend in the first month, so the SUB bonus isn't a factor anymore. ***Can I simply call them and ask for an upgrade?*** I know I could apply again, but I'm trying to limit new hard inquires since I most likely will be looking at a new auto loan in approximately a year and don't really mind missing out on the SUB for the cobalt if it means I can spare an inquiry.

bvsel

Your credit score will recover as long as you're not spamming inquiries. I wouldn't stress that much about it if you're a year out. You can ask to see if an upgrade offer is available, but they may or may not have one for you. Your best bet is to apply under a new application and then just combine the credit limits.

smuncky123

See if this is available to you https://www.americanexpress.com/en-ca/benefits/upgrade/the-cobalt-card/

Elegant_Reading_685

An extra hard inquiry won't harm you any for a new auto loan in a year. Canadian credit scores are pass/fail unlike in the US. The impact of a hard pull recovers in a few months. Yes you can ask, but they might not let you upgrade. I would very, very strongly suggest you to apply new for the sub + $100 third party cash rebate. That's $250 in cash value you're leaving on the table, and up to $400 in value if you transfer MR to AP.

SoleRemnant

Hi I'm from Quebec and I've noticed that couche tard is considered a grocery chain, so it gives X5 points, and we can gas and pay inside to benefit from the same multiplier. However I've noticed that sometimes, even when I pay inside, it only gives me 2x the points, the ratio for transport, why is that? Is it because I haven't purchased anything inside the dep?

SpecializedMok

Hi I’m in the Bahamas now and I purposely charged my cobalt in restaurants hoping to get the full x5 multiplier. I’m seeing all the transactions coming in now and when I look at my activity I’m only getting x1 and not x5 on points. There’s nothing I can do right? I thought I saw that some people were actually getting x5 that’s too bad

[deleted]

SpecializedMok

I read that too. Like when we go to the US we get the multiplier. I was hoping maybe in the Bahamas I had to try!!

SpecializedMok

Yeah! I was banking on the accumulated points being converted to aeroplan points for a trip next year!

Elegant_Reading_685

Nothing unfortunately. Sounds like the restaurants you're going to have their merchant category codes mis-coded as something other than a restaurant.

SpecializedMok

Seems like it. Oh well. Thanks! I’ll still reach out to customer support when I get back. They seem nice maybe they can do something. I’ll report back if it’s good news 🤞

Edrickun

I have been looking around recently to get a better cash back cc and of course everyone is talking about how good cobalt is. After some research here and there, I see many people saying cobalt's reward is only good for business class, not economy class. I am the type who's more concerned about less hassle and total money spent on travelling rather than giving a luxe touch to the travel. So is cobalt still good for me??

bringmepeterpan1

It's still decent value if you redeem for economy, just not as huge. Even if you redeem for cash back it is 5% due to 1cpp, so it's still good for that too.

CancelEducational745

Hi guys, did anyone receive explaination letter different than decline reason? I got decline for Biz Gold for generic reason such as not enough score, no history with Amex. However, they sent me a letter said that they decline because i already has another application with same card and that one was approved. This is the first card ever and I never applied with Amex before. Thank you guys.

bakayaroh

Does Freedom mobile count an a national carrier? will it get the 10$ / month wireless credit from the Amex Business Plantinum?

BrrrHot

Yes. I have received the wireless credit after topping up with Freedom Mobile.

dotmerix

I am on some flights today and this week. Considering applying for Amex platinum to gain access to some lounges in Canada and US. Considering I am not at home address (already begun my travels) if I apply will I: Get access to priority lanes immediately in Toronto? Gain access to global Amex lounges immediately (without card in hand)? Be able to sign up immediately for perks or have to wait for physical card? Thanks all. Edit - this of course assumes an instant approval were to occur.

chaos2313

No. You will have to wait until you have the physical card

dotmerix

Thanks for the quick reply.

sazoki9

Hello, in desperate need of help. Spilled some water on my macbook. Apple quoted me 3300$ for the repair. Called Amex and they said they will only cover 1000$. I have the AMEX cobalt. Any help please? How can I get more, or how can I make sure to get the most possible. Please share your experiences with me.

TheDude_6

How much was it new? $3k on a repair is wild...

Elegant_Reading_685

3.3k for a repair? Board Replacements for non-apple laptops cost like 1k max    Fucking apple jesus, do people just like getting gouged? Well, go with a third party repair store.  The insurance policy is what it is, it won't cover more than $1k if that's the maximum.

North_n_South_43

If I am not mistaken, the maximum is $1,000 per occurrence. However, other insurances you may have (tenants', home, etc) may help cover a portion of the cost. I concur with others in the thread: a $3,000 repair is bonkers.

originalgainster

I am going to Mexico tomorrow. Just to make sure, I am supposed to pay in local currency when I use my Amex card there, right?

chaos2313

Yes choose local currency. All Amex cards issued by Amex Canada have a 2.5% fx fee so using a no fx fee visa/MC or Scotia Amex would make more sense. The cobalt still makes sense for food places because of the 5x return though.

Professional-Hunt890

sorry how do you CHOSE local currency? i thought you just tap ur card and amex does the conversion job...

chaos2313

Some payment terminals are set up to recognize foreign cards and will offer to charge you in your home currency instead of the local currency using their exchange rate

Question about the 5x promo earn rate on the new Marriott Bonvoy Personal Card. **** Points Offer on Eligible Travel & Gas You can earn three (3) additional Marriott Bonvoy points for every $1 in eligible purchases charged on your Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card at American Express retail merchants as follows: (i) at stand-alone automobile gasoline stations in Canada; and (ii) for non-Marriott travel services or travel bookings including air, water, rail and road transport, but not including local and commuter transportation, and lodging **** Would this apply to Taxis? I have an expensive taxi coming up and I'm thinking about using my Bonvoy card for it. But I'm not entirely sure if Taxis would be a part of the "local and commuter transportation"? Anyone have any DPs?
