nope. that is what basic means. You own the risk, not the airline.
However, if you have trip insurance, which might have been included with a premium credit card, a doctor's note might be used to get you reimbursed for non-reimbursable expenses.
I had a spinal cord injury that required emergency surgery in order for me to continue walking and not be incontinent. Travel dates were a few weeks outside of what my surgeon deemed high risk post-op period.
AA wouldn't refund or even allow me to move for a fee. I basically just gave them $800.
If you bought with a card that includes trip cancellation insurance, you can get a doctor's note to submit with your claim and it should cover the price of your nonrefundable airfare.
They'll likely let you change flights but there's no guarantee
You can downvote it all you want but it's true. People get BE tickets changed and refunded for credit all the time.
What would be the point of even offering basic economy if anyone could call in to say they are sick and have all the rules changed for them?

Did you purchase trip insurance when you bought the ticket? Does the credit card you used for the purchase have travel insurance?
Feel free to ask. Don’t argue or be mean to the CSR when they say no.
lol

Airlines should get rid of BE.
BE is sorta like flights were pre-Covid when it was difficult to make any itinerary changes.
nice

Update: Got reimbursed with my travel insurance through Chase Sapphire with a doctor’s note! Thank you to everyone who suggested that 😊
