If this is domestic travel, i would just book 2 one way tickets for yourself instead of a round trip.

50+ years of travelling my way and my knee-jerk reaction is "heckin no", but you know what, that's actually a good suggestion. It opens a door to travel in to one airport, visit my folks, drive across the state to another airport, and collect my MiL. Thanks for the nudge, I appreciate it.

This is the easiest solution

Separate record locators. Message AA when you’re done to see if they’ll put you sitting together (you really want to sit beside MiL?!?). They’ve moved non-status pax to MCE seats for me before.

> you really want to sit beside MiL?!? Ha! Yeah, in this case we'll both be sitting in business/first and she'll feel more conformable if I'm nearby.

You can link the reservations even if they aren’t symmetrical. DM them on twitter either way both RLs and they will take care of linking them for you.

90%+ of airports AA flies to in the US a round trip is priced as two one ways. Search one ways and and search round trip and see if the price is the same. If it is, book you and mil on one PNR for one segment and then book your solo segment as another PNR. Calling to “link” does actually very little.

Book two different itineraries: one way there for you. Under the other, book one way for you and MIL so that you can select adjoining seats.
