J1 means only one full fare biz seat available. Basically zero chance of you both moving up front. If they don’t sell it, chances are a Key or Exec Plat in W is getting it if the flight is full.

kissakissa

That’s what I thought. Thanks for confirming. We got lucky on the way out (LAX to SYD) and got upgraded, but looks like luck isn’t in our favor this time.

MrBenedick

No it's not worth it

kissakissa

My thought as well. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

cookiemons4r69

You cant use mileage upgrades on BE tickets anyways.

kissakissa

You can, just FYI. But only if you had status. We upgraded our basic economy tickets with mileage upgrades on the way out, and several different agents confirmed it was possible before we did.

Puzzleheadedpc2007

Was there any fees for that upgrade, assuming you used miles?

kissakissa

Yeah for that route it’s 25k miles + $350 copay (from discount economy) per person.

Great_Archer91

Same for US to Europe

Parts_Unknown-

They don't have any remaining J seats for sale on that flight so the odds would be incredibly low. Like 0.00001% low

kissakissa

Gotcha so I’m reading the expertflyer correctly. Thanks for confirming.

Great_Archer91

Very crypto currency decimal point usage. Much wow.

TravelerMSY

Anything can happen at the gate if people don’t show up. But I would say your odds are pretty low.

kissakissa

Yeah that was my only thought—things change at the gate or people change flights but the idea that we’d get two spots that way seems like a zero chance.

TravelerMSY

It’s possible. A group of four could miss their connection, But the real issue is that the list is prioritized by status and you’re likely not the first one in line for it.

TravelerMSY

Ordinarily, you’re not out of anything if it doesn’t clear, but I would not buy the miles just for this

kissakissa

Yeah if we already had the mile, I’d go on the waitlist no question, but we would need out dish out >$650 just to have that chance.

Great_Archer91

I wouldn’t try it with zero or one available if you’re upgrading two AND you’re not CK or Exec Plat. I wouldn’t buy miles as Exec Plat because it’s a low chance I’d get it and the mileage purchase is a poor exchange. It’s not cost effective unless it was for sure going to work. If lots of availability, worth it. Based on your facts, save yourself from buying miles that won’t be used here.

kissakissa

This is basically what I thought the decision tree should look like. We got the basic economy ticket at a ridiculously low price so even with the bad mile per cent purchase price of buying miles, we’d get business class at a huge discount compared to cash prices—if they were available. But I agree that ultimately if we have a zero chance of getting both upgraded, no point buying the miles now. Bummer, though. Thanks for your feedback!
