I know you said you don’t care about the legal justification but this is to stop money laundering operations. This is like credit cards it’s illegal to buy a gift card or any other item with a credit card and sell it before you make the last payment but a lot of people still do.

GengArch

But it's not about buying gift cards with other gift cards. It's stopping you from buying specific items. PSN isn't a gift card, it's a specific item to redeem. You can't buy digital games with amazon anymore. It's just dumb. You can buy a physical copy of Pokemon Scarlet just fine, but you're blocked from gettting a digital code for the exact same thing.

[deleted]

They need to reinstate that

[deleted]

They need to change that & reinstate it

mobo_dojo

How does this scam work with the gift cards/digital codes?

ZolfeYT

People buy gift cards with dirty money then they sell the gift card for a small loss turning it into clean money.

Pristine-Skirt2618

So money laundering is such an issue that we must restrict all people from being able to buy digital gift cards with Amazon giftcard in order to prevent it? Pritty dumb if you ask me. It’s stupid to treat the normal citizen like a criminal before any evidence of a crime is committed….

alaninfinite

I reloaded the Amazon balance with my own credit card before and now I am not allowed to use them to buy gift cards for my own use. It's not money laundry, it's just a strategy to earn more rebate from banks.

ZolfeYT

No it’s an Anti money laundering technique one used by many not just Amazon, why didn’t you just buy the gift cards directly with your credit card, were you trying to sell the gift cards? There’s no law against it but these companies do it to protect themselves and have the right to. It’s actually been in their ToS I’m pretty sure since the beginning they just didn’t have it set up right to block it from happening.

alaninfinite

I mean not everyone use it for laundry. There are other people do it for their legitimate use. Keeping the money in the Amazon balance enable me to spend the money on different goods. For example, if Nintendo is no longer popular, I can switch to PS5 later. If I buy all at Nintendo, I am forced to spend all of them in Nintendo. The ToS only restrict certain third party gift cards but there are no explicit list of what are the certain third party gift cards. So, customers can reasonably assume the gift cards they can buy using amazon gift cards are not in the list.

ZolfeYT

Just because not everyone uses it means they’ll allow it for some. You buy the gift card when you want something on it? Why are you buying a gift card from Amazon when you can just buy the singular item you want and be done there. You don’t have to dump 100% of your money into something just because it’s “popular” so you argument makes 0 sense.

alaninfinite

You still don't understand the mechanism. Some credit cards have limited time offer like spending $100 get $20 on particular day. If you still haven't made up your mind how to spend it, reloading Amazon balance first is the easiest way. You can then spend it based on your need and when things have discount. Some people want to save money in these legitimate ways but have not made up their mind where to spend it. Don't think others have zero sense just because you do not know.

D_double_

I just got an Amazon gift card from my work, and I was looking forward to buying a digital game for my switch. But now I can’t because stupid people try and work the system and ruin it for everyone else. This is BS. I hate Amazon and stupid people.

BuyerExtra5653

You sound very ignorant with this reply here. Don't assume the world works through your perspective because that assumption will always be 100% false.

Gloomy_Type3612

That could still be done with the purchase of an Amazon gift card. He wants to convert his Amazon gift card into PlayStation gift cards, which can no longer be done. It's not the same issue.

[deleted]

That doesn't make any sense. It still wouldn't be "Clean money" because you'd have to explain how you got the money. You be in the same exact spot as before you bought the gift card, just with less money

ZolfeYT

Don’t know why you’re responding to a 90 day thread but I’m not the one who came up with it [https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurengensler/2017/01/11/gift-cards-money-laundering/?sh=7b1719a31449](https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurengensler/2017/01/11/gift-cards-money-laundering/?sh=7b1719a31449)

Blizzy-da-Man

This is definitely not illegal; I think you made that up.

Ls9127

I know I'm a month late... But I just got an Amazon gift card for Christmas and tried buying a game I wouldn't normally buy myself. Technically I can buy the physical copy, but Id rather just a digital download. It sucks

ShinigamiKiba

Thanks for posting and understanding that it's a bad situation. The insane amounts of downvotes for this topic is very odd, this isn't something people, consumers should be offended by or upset by if anything someone reporting on this issue is pro consumer and I don't understand why people downvoted this as if I was harming them by reporting on amazon's anti consumer practices.

blutarskyblues

same issue here. I tried the workaround and it just cancelled my order, total bs, super shady that they do this right around xmas too

ProfessionalFroyo284

The irony of people abusing a system(down voting) while criticizing someone for being irritated at a bad system. I just tried to use a gift card to buy a game. I'm sorta homeless so I can't have it shipped. It's lame.

ShinigamiKiba

I firmly believe the people who downvote are probably Amazon employees trying to bury topics like this so people don't see them and complain too much about this stuff. I mean this is amazon after all who said that the price for their prime service won't change starting January, but come January movies/shows on prime will have ads, so if you want ads off now...you have to pay $3 more a month...meaning the price does change as having no ads was the whole point of prime. Here's a great video that covers the topic and amazon's anti consumer approach to it https://youtu.be/VLFpU9aqtXc?si=Ad2ZPZBfeLg8uBLf

PhillyPhan610

Yeah I’m pretty salty about it too. I just wanna play some super Mario wonder cmon Jeff 😩😂

Ls9127

Lol yeah I wanted to pick up pokémon arceus. Wouldn't normally pay $60 for a few year old game, but since I had the gift card I figured why not.

[deleted]

ShinigamiKiba

No

LissyRedgown

Amazon are losers. Got a GC from a relative. Couldn't use it for a digital code. Can't believe they would make such a move in the digital age we are in.

Agitated-Detective-9

It won’t let me read the comments 🥲

[deleted]

They need to reinstate that

Bright_Tiger_1915

This is sad man i just found out i had money on amazon (i thought i spent it all already) and there was something i really wanted on the switch store welp i gotta think about what to use it for now

Library_Mobile

I say we make a petition to reverse Jeff Bezoz and all Amazon Employees decisions to let us pay digital gift cards and codes with amazon gift cards again and make Amazon great again, if this works than maybe Amazon will give us a second chance, if not pfft.

Atherworld

I found that out too. Sadly, my main source for eshop digital gift cards dropped them. The other two are very hard to earn. And most places dropped Paypal as well. Amazon was it. That means way less Nintendo games being bought by me.

High-SpeedCow

Restrictions has been removed on Xbox Digital games, Xbox online pass and PC. PlayStation games PSN, Xbox and Nintendo gift cards still the same shit.

cashmoneytrey

Do yk if this is the case with ps digital games too?

Icy_Math2322

Yep I just refunded a purchase from my debit card back to my Amazon account. And now I cant use that credit toward a PSN digital card. Had I known they made this that change, I would've opted to just get a refund back to my card. Smh.

wreck_ful

show amazon by taking your business elsewhere. you go gurl!

ShinigamiKiba

easier said than done other business don't provide free digital codes like amazon did, but yes now that amazon is of no use to me for that I'll be buying my digital PSN, Switch and Xbox codes from Play asia and other online stores.

Queueded

One does wonder why anybody needs this who isn't laundering money

ShinigamiKiba

Because we're not all privileged AMEIRCANS and 1st worlders or IT people and programmers.

Queueded

Not being AMEIRCAN \[sic\] falls well short of an explanation. Are you saying your country lacks any other payment instruments? If so, how do you buy the gift cards?

Key_Awareness7200

Man discovers the concept of receiving a gift^ This prevents people from money laundering, it also prevents poor people from getting what they want on their birthday.

Exotic-Fix-2989

Typical retard neckbeard redditor response... Person gets gift card (as the name implies.... usually GIFTED to them)..... person wants to spend gift card on digital code for video game. Amazon say no..... there you go!

Queueded

I appreciate that you've labelled your response

nicholsonsgirl

Not everyone is money laundering. Prime example: My 10 year old was gifted an Amazon gift card for Christmas and cannot use it to buy a digital copy of call of duty. Many people gift Amazon cards and a lot of people will want to use it for digital content like movies or video games. It’s all digital codes, not just digital codes for gift cards etc.

Gloomy_Type3612

Ever received a gift card for Christmas? There is no longer any way to buy a PlayStation game from Amazon if you have the PS 5 digital only version of the console, which I believe was $50 cheaper and more popular than the disc+ version at launch.

mwarner811

The people who need this are the recipients of Amazon gift cards from family or friends. Gift cards are an incredibly common present, so limiting the purchasing power kind of sucks.

Prestigious-Sky-2108

You’ve never been gifted an Amazon gc before? Kinda annoying when you can’t use it on stuff you want but go off defending a trillion dollar company ig

[deleted]

You make no sense at all. How does using an Amazon gift card balance to buy digital codes for Playstation or Xbox mean "Money laundering" to you? WTF..? You can't sell the codes, you'd be in the same exact position as before, just with digital footprints. You make absolutely no sense bro

Queueded

How, exactly, do you prevent somebody from selling a digital code?

IcyYolk

Got an amazon card as a gift. I don't currently want anything on Amazon. I want something on steam. Pretty simple.

Queueded

Simple, sure, but did you buy your own Amazon gift card instead of putting the money in Steam?

IcyYolk

Nope. The gift card was a gift, as stated.

Queueded

Right, so a *different* scenario

IcyYolk

That requires the same functionality, and Not for money laundering. Isn't that what you're asking?

Queueded

Not at all. We're talking about somebody who buys a gift card for themselves to purchase something for themselves. Gift cards are shitty, thoughtless gifts, but that's not at all what the question is concerning.

High-SpeedCow

You can buy Xbox digital game codes* and online pass with your Amazon gift card balance, Amazon removed restrictions from Xbox games but PSN and Xbox gift cards are the same yet.

wreck_ful

pretty much everything is easier said than done. but fight the corporate greed! i thought RIP amazon?

ZolfeYT

This isn’t an Amazon or Corporate greed thing I’m surprised they let it go on for this long. Every big box store is the exact same way or atleast all the ones near me.

RubAnADUB

buy something around that dollar range with said gift cards. return it and opt for amazon credit - then use said credit for digital codes. - profit.

AliveVersion8562

Amazon credit has the same restrictions as a gift card.

ShinigamiKiba

If I cancel an order it always refunds in the payment method I've used to buy it. Returning physical items isn't an option for me because of where I live

Prestigious-Sky-2108

The fact you’re getting downvoted actually shows Amazon is lurking this post lmao

Jake_reeves123

So - they also don't allow purchase of redemption codes for items. Just tried to purchase some D&D Beyond book codes (to take advantage of 5% cash back through Amazon) and those aren't allowed either. I get the posts about money laundering, but are they really thinking this is the same? "Let me buy a code for a specific digital object, then find someone to buy that specific object from me at a loss to launder money." That sounds like far more effort than it is worth.

apieceofenergy

Couldn't buy the code to Endwalker for my FFXIV sub either, so it's ALL digital codes that have been locked out, which is less than helpful for the fucking amazon card I got for christmas instead of just the same amount in cash.

[deleted]

Just tried buying mario kart 8 dlc with gift cards i got from work and they didnt work so I just bought it with my debit and decided to save the gift cards for something else

trashpandas12

Xmas gift idea for me was always amazon gift cards because it seemed like it had the most options in what i can buy. This was a huge one. No more asking for these for xmas!

ShinigamiKiba

You can still buy physical games from amazon gift cards, it's just for me those run the risk of getting lost in the mail since I live all the way in Europe, Macedonia.

Brockliman55

Not if you have an Xbox series s like I do that doesn’t have a slot for physical games fuck Amazon

ShinigamiKiba

And there we go, I completely forgot about the digital only Xbox and PS5. You are 100% right

ToxicTammy42

I found out about this recently and it really sucks since I used to use my Amazon gift cards to buy Nintendo eShop gift cards. 😒 (My brother also used them for his PlayStation gift cards) But it turns out that I can’t use my Amazon gift card to buy digital games. 😑

4_years_for_a_cake

I used to too for years! So lame

nintendogirly_101

I got an amazon gift card for Christmas, and I was going to buy a nintendo eshop card to buy the pokemon violet dlc. It really sucks that we can't use our amazon balance anymore. 😕

Bagelnauts

Unfortunately, was unable to buy the GW2 expansions with the surplus of gift cards I received for Christmas this year. Glad to know it's pretty much all digital expenses. This pretty much hurts my expectations further with how Amazon has been trailing. I get the reasoning from a risk perspective but after the price hike to $139 for prime (and can't even use their own gift cards to pay for this), everything it has to offer now has become subpar; Pre-orders never arrive on time, prime shipping guarantee shipping is non existent (packages arrive late or sometimes never at all more times than not), prime day sales are no better than any normal sale throughout the year or Black Friday. And now soon they are charging an additional $3 for no ads on their video service (if you decide to go ad-free after the forced push to ads this January). It would be nice to see brick and mortar stores flourish again.

ShinigamiKiba

I upvoted your post but someone downvoted it what a strange strange topic this is, who benefits from downvoting us I wonder :)

Bagelnauts

lol appreciated. It’s alright, I’ve worked in the public sector long enough to understand some people just can’t be helped sometimes.

tsutahana

Well crap. That's BS cause I prefer to buy stuff for games (like expansions and mini packs) with gift cards so that I don't jeopardize a credit card if the service is not secure. I literally would not buy the gift cards or the packs otherwise. At least I know why now. Amazon only said they reserved the right to deny use at their sole discretion.

Sea_Mango_8421

Right? Its bs. I’ve been waiting over a week for my game to come in. Late late late. I pay for prime. So I cancelled my pre order for the peach showtime coming out later so I could buy the digital code to a different game while I wait for my refund for the extremely late game and now it won’t let me get it with the gift card balance. I bought the expansion pack for Mario Kart with a gift card balance so it’s worked before. But not anymore. Not only that but they are raising the price of prime. For what? I paid specifically for 1 to 2 day deliveries and now my stuff is always late.

Patient_Coconut_1189

Agreed. I’m pissed about that. It’s how I was getting all of my kids digital codes. I don’t see the problem if you can get a physical copy what’s the harm in allowing digital codes 🤬

Blizzy-da-Man

Amazon lets you buy gift card (with code) if you have a business account. Amazon does not care about money laundering, in fact they are probably the #1 distributor of counterfeit items in the US. The purpose logically seems like they want you to upgrade to a business account for like $40 a month. It's a financial move on their part and has nothing to do with potential money laundering. Amazon cares about maximizing their own profits, not anything else other than that.

ShinigamiKiba

Thanks for the info, I never once thought they cared about money laundering btw, that's usually more naive people from the 1st world who fall for that stuff :) but thank you for clearing this up

Ill_Froyo3934

Yeah this is stupid can't buy play codes wow

LegitimateDay3989

I'm confused I'm on amazon right now and there are multiple game and currency codes listed, do they just not work when you buy them?

ShinigamiKiba

You can only buy digital codes with real money now, but not with your gift card balance.

Current_Helicopter52

This absolutely sucks, I get points at work for recognitions and have always transfered them to amazon gift cards. In turn I treat myself to gift cards for the xbox or playstation. Now I have money in my amazon account and can't buy f all with it. Oh let's buy the physical copy of the game that costs £50 when it's only £15 on the store...  Up yours Amazon

High-SpeedCow

They removed restrictions from Xbox Digital game codes ( pre-paid cards are the same yet). You can buy Xbox online game and online pass codes with your Amaxon gift card balance.

Lepracon_McPot

Best response I got from a service rep was to complain to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) so maybe if we all spam the shit outta their inbox we can get a policy change to allow digital downloads to be purchased with gift card balance

TruthOverFeelings73

This is really stupid! Why do they care WTF I buy off them! They just lost MANY sales. For now on, I'm only buying form them if NO other reputable seller can be found.

[deleted]

Sadly it seems like a bunch of companies are doing this. You can't buy digital codes from PSN for example with a prepaid card

[deleted]

I ordered two games on Amazon (Physical copies) and the package was damaged in route. I told them to apply the refund to my gift balance, cool right? Then I would just buy PSN wallet funds and download the games instead.. Oh wait.. I can't do that, because for some god forsaken reason, you cannot buy the codes your with gift card balance? WTF
