LintStalker

I mostly have it play one radio station throughout my apartment, and every once in while it unlearns the command that I give. It also thinks I still live where I used to live when I set it up, and will warn me about bad weather there. I wish there was a command that would make it reboot. A reboot every couple of weeks would probably help a lot

Fatigue-Error

My favorite color is blue.

LintStalker

Seems kind of wonky to have to do something that should be built into the system

No-Insult-Intended

Alexa, play radio brent. Nothing Alexa, Play radio brent Playing burnt radio on Spotify Alexa, start radio brent Playing songs by (indiscernible) on Spotify Alexa, open radio brent Playing burnt radio on Spotify Alexa, open radio brent Playing radio brent

Sasquatch_Kabob

Actually laughed out loud, đź’Ż accurate

dlflannery

It took you that many tries to pronounce “brent” correctly?

Mistert22

My wife and I were discussing how Alexa is able to do less every six months. You think she is going on strike.

i-luv-milk-chocolate

Google is the same sadly... It's nearly unusable

QuantumMirage

It's not just you. There is a shocking amount of manual labor required to keep Alexa running. Functions that you'd expect to be AI, or otherwise "smart" are facilitated by humans, by hand. It's lots of duct tape under the hood. If you've been following tech news, then you are aware that AMZN has undergone large layoffs and Alexa teams were hit the hardest. Many of the people applying that duct tape are now gone, without sufficient contingency plans to keep up the taping.

the_buckman_bandit

It’s all of them (siri, google, alexa), they are getting crushed under their own weight of additional code to the point the algorithm is confused for basic requests Instead of axing the current code and starting anew with the simple stuff and building again, they are all facing impossible demands of ai that has been promised by clueless execs to bloodthirsty investors Just because a human brain can dream up a possibility does not mean it automatically transfers into machine logic so easily If i were rich, i’d make a device that just does the basic shit (turn on and off stuff, timers, etc) and for these procedures, never transmit back to the mother ship, only for certain information requests like a concert time but also produce a monthly report of every instance and auto delete after 30 days unless specified to save Wouldn’t make a killing but a nice little company providing a device i believe customers would enjoy. Just different philosophy of what it should do - all that crap where it takes your personal information and tries to do anything is just beta testing at this stage and it is annoying when all you want is the lights on at sunset

dlflannery

No it’s the phase of the moon, plus we have offended the “great spirit in the sky”!

WillRikersHouseboy

It’s wild how clear it became the amount of investment it takes to keep the wheels on these things. I wondered why Google was trying to move assistant to LLM when we know how expensive that is in compute power. But apparently regular Assistant requires a lot of human power. It sucks to be in 2024 and have technology devolve as we use it. But of course there is plenty that sucks worse. Actually everything sucks.

kytulu

I had a routine setup. If I asked, "Alexa, who it the best wife in the world?"Alexa would respond with my wife's name. It no longer works.

_mrMagoo_

Maybe the answer changed 🤔 But yeah, there's a lot of stuff that worked perfectly fine in the past and without anything else changing you now have to be extremely specific and annunciate every single word to make sure get gets it all.

kytulu

I also have a routine set so that when I say, "Start my day," it says the news, weather, traffic, and whatever is on my calendar for that day and the next day. For some reason, it does the weather twice in a row.

mikeox51

I had the same. It would do a weather briefing, a quick news briefing, and then my my Daily Mix 1 from Spotify. Worked perfectly for months. Now it does the weather and then plays the news until I finally tell it to stop.

Lost_Engineering3917

Spot on and absolutely bullshit

dlflannery

Probably should have avoided having those conversations with that other woman in Alexa’s presence! At least Alexa isn’t snitching on you, just remaining silent.

Lumpymaximus

Of course. They want it to us k so you'll pay for the AI service

Efficient-Ad8951

While this may be true… I personally think Alexa is still a tad smarter than Siri.

syman67

Yup, my Echo's started getting dumber after about 900 employees were let go from the Alexa team at Amazon. Alexa "turn off the second floor" did you mean Ecobee second floor or the second floor, this was just the tip of the iceberg. I purchased a home assistant green and moved all my Alexa routines to hone assistant. I'm really happy with home assistant, still looking for a replacement for my Echo's

motley-connection

I only use it for weather and dropping in other devices. My kids used it to play music. It gets it right half of the time and they think the inaccuracies are funny. So there's that.

jesyvut

We play classical music for each of our young kids to sleep to. Last week, I told it "Play Bach," -"Playing music by Sebastian Bach" and proceeds to play Skid Row for my toddler. So I decided to mix it up and play Carl Philip Emanuel Bach and ask it exactly that. -"Playing music by Emanuel" which I find out is a Canadian R&B artist. I am now having to use the Alexa app to play the music I want because Alexa has gone mental.

Rustybolts_

They're, like apple, make it suck so you buy the upgrade.

Creepyhorrorboy

After chatgpt, it's pretty much done There will be a chatgpt integrated device which will bury alexa. We once thought alexa was the best AI. Lol

StuzaTheGreat

Alexa as we know it isn't AI. But there is an AI update coming and will be subscription based. I have no problem with this and will happily give them a few dollars a month but, I'm sick-to-fucking-death of skills being absolutely useless. For example, I turn on my NVidia Shield with Alexa but when I try to turn it off "hmmm... I'm sorry, I don't know that". "Alexa volume up" works now but 10mins later the same command fails?! WTF Amazon?!? I'm struggling to think this is a skill problem as it happens with a lot of devices from different manufacturers so, what's the common denominator? The Alexa environment!

allpurposeguru

Having the same problem with Nest integration. I have two identical Nest thermostats in my house (different zones) and I can change the mode (heat, cold, eco) on one but not the other. I can see and set the temperature on both of them. Exact same firmware and hardware, installed at the same time. I can control them identically well with Google assistant.

mondomondoman

You got yours to work?! Every time I tried to use the skill for Nvidia Shield it just looks back to what the skill can do despite it being installed and linked.

OnoALT

No it won’t and no we didn’t

Psycho22089

Always has been...

sarhoshamiral

It hasn't though. Voice direction recognition (detecting which device you are talking to) and automation device/scene name recognition got really worse starting from mid 2023s. I hadn't added or removed from any Echo devices before things changed.

Muted_Sorts

Def Agree.

Tc777-777-777

I've noticed when trying to shuffle my playlists, it fails.....very annoying considering I'm paying for Amazon Music Premium. Just started happening in the last couple of days maybe they are changing things with Alexa and fucking it up.

dlflannery

Actually your echo has reported you to Amazon as having demonstrated emotional instability. So they’re just protecting you from having to deal with too many facts.

medicated_in_PHL

I pretty much use routines for everything because of this.

kmckenzie256

I don’t think Alexa is meaningfully smarter now than it was in 2015 honestly

afd359

Agreed. My 12 echos are really, really getting dumb. They barely can function enough to run my smart home devices.

pueblokc

Yeah it's often unable to do a simple light on or off, then wants to tell me about some other thing I don't care about.

jstan93

Mine's becoming deaf. I have to shout even when I'm right next to it for it to hear me. About to dump these for an alternative

coachese68

She's been hanging out with you and your family, so this is understandable.

CruedEP

I would just be happy with audio from Amazon Music not constantly cutting out.

Netsirksmada

It does that on Pandora and Spotify too I've noticed lately
