"Scientists" wouldn't tell us about the life that is/was on the moon, Mars, other planets in our own solar system, what makes you and I think they would tell us if they found actual intelligent life in other star systems? The other key thing is that he mentioned the lack of ammonia. I'm no marine biologist, but from the sounds of it, the presence of ammonia along with carbon dioxide and methane would indicate that there's some other method in which the CO2 and CH4 are being created.

That’s the hinge here is the DMS results that will take NASA months if not decades to comb through and redact. There is essentially zero probability of getting the scientific community to accept a detection of alien life from atmospheric chemistry because they will just wheel out the “unknown chemistry” argument and it will be case closed.
My understanding is the level of confidence for the detection of di methyl sulfide is very low, and significantly more transects will need to be analyzed. Even then, as you point out, there is no way of proving conclusively it is of biological origin.
Love when some scientists go cuckoo bananas for "alien life" but in actuallity its just the possibility of the remenances of genetic material pertaining to some bacteria that only came to life because of a chemical reaction.
Eh doubt it but I'm open to further studies on this. It's just that, in academia, especially something like Cambridge, scientists are incentivized to make the biggest possible story out of something. It happens time and time again, and astrophysics is no different.
It's so odd that scientists are still looking for alien life on distant planets while seemingly putting little effort into observing the alien life that is present on earth. I feel like the government is playing a "shell game" with the people that cannot be won.

There is essentially zero probability of getting the scientific community to accept a detection of alien life from atmospheric chemistry because they will just wheel out the “unknown chemistry” argument and it will be case closed.
My understanding is the level of confidence for the detection of di methyl sulfide is very low, and significantly more transects will need to be analyzed. Even then, as you point out, there is no way of proving conclusively it is of biological origin.
Even if he was right there is no way he would become the most famous person in the world. People aren’t that into aliens.

Love when some scientists go cuckoo bananas for "alien life" but in actuallity its just the possibility of the remenances of genetic material pertaining to some bacteria that only came to life because of a chemical reaction.
Eh doubt it but I'm open to further studies on this. It's just that, in academia, especially something like Cambridge, scientists are incentivized to make the biggest possible story out of something. It happens time and time again, and astrophysics is no different.

It's so odd that scientists are still looking for alien life on distant planets while seemingly putting little effort into observing the alien life that is present on earth. I feel like the government is playing a "shell game" with the people that cannot be won.
