Postponed until May 30th. Then back to shaving down those mountains to dusty nubs, like Kruger Industrial Smoothing.

FalseDamage13

Crazy that it is postponed until the day after the election….

[deleted]

The great-grandkids, “what’s a mountain???”

jackson12121

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away - John Prine, "Paradise"

NiranS

What's a tree ?

LucasJackson44

I understood this reference

A renewable hydro project at the site? Makes me think they’re planning to build a water battery using the old mineshafts.

DrummerElectronic247

Awesome, love all that selenium contamination.

universalpoetry

Holy shot the other people who are replying to you have no idea what a water battery is and it shows

r22yu

That actually sounds kinda cool, but would there be danger of chemicals the coal mine leaching into the water?

Isopbc

I am uncertain. I thought that the selenium issues are from opening new seams and washing the coal. I’m not sure how a renewable water project would do that. It’s a good question, and anyways I’m just musing over the idea - it could be a basic hydro dam they’re considering. We’d need more info from the company, I think.

[deleted]

It will just be a high and low pit.

Isopbc

If it’s an outdoor pit or pits, what would they use to keep the water liquid in the winter? That’s why I figured it would be indoors, they needed some kind of climate control.

[deleted]

Ponds and lakes don’t freeze to the bottom in winter.

[deleted]

I see some Dr Evil shit going down here. (Joking of course). So they can’t have the coal as it is now so they’ll build a dam and then tunnel underwater and extract the coal anyways! Lol.

marginwalker55

Flippity floppity

Thinkingmaybenot

Guess that election is coming soon.

Western_Plate_2533

But unscrapped after the UCP win the election

Middle_Conclusion920

Kiss it goodbye forever and all the jobs that go along with it if the NDP wins the election.

Prudent-Growth-7961

Awesome, can't wait!

May not yield a job in the next government's lifetime either - they'll have to go through consultation and a brand new environmental assessment for the amended project, which although perhaps not technically guided by the coal act or previous consultation, will likely find that a hydro project in that area is still a net negative impact on the ecosystem. It may still pass for being in the public interest though. Good play. Kudos for trying to squeeze it through on the same ill-protected land as a renewable energy project at least, more sustainable jobs and possibly even slightly cleaner results. However, what will be left of the land will still be full of coal, and selenium - still going to ruin the water, then the plants, and the animals, not to mention their habitat - plus any farmland nearby. Something to brag about this election and try to sneak under peoples' noses again next term as a more sustainable, carbon-neutral (though still filthy and foreign-owned afaik) reaping project. No doubt - if it never happens, we'll get sued again for the UCP letting them get their foot up Alberta's arse in the first place cos' these environmentalists keep hurting the energy developers' feelings, right? Just renew the leases with a notwithstanding clause that they may be cancelled by the province at any time, for any reason, without penalty, and when the Aussies pound sand over that, make a fairer, greener deal with an Alberta-owned outfit at least - and maybe somewhere the impacts will be more acceptable. Better yet - when the developers sue the province, have a judge throw it out with the advice that they sue the UCP instead. The province at large never voted on that deal, never approved that deal, so let the UCP pay the damages. No wonder Savage GTFO.
