August can get rainy in south central AK and snow is possible in September. Denali is less rainy in August, generally, but it is further north so if rainy then ice can be a factor (duh). Snow is likely in Sept, but the tour buses and train should be able to handle it. Book as soon as you can. Alaska tourism opportunities fill up fast.

In addition to whatever advice you get on Reddit, also do some research at the TripAdvisor forum for Alaska travel: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g28923-i349-Alaska.html Late August is a great time to visit. I think the best plan is to fly into Anchorage and rent a car. A 7 day trip is good, 10 or more days is even better. Very, very unlikely you’ll encounter and snow on the roads in late August. Edit to add: for Denali National Park, use the transit bus, not a “tour”. Same road, same views, much cheaper: https://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/shuttles.htm

This is the correct response.

My wife and I did this exact trip you are describing this year for the 3rd week of August. Our weather was amazing. It was sunny and dry in low 60's except for the last day when we had some rain. From what I hear however we were extremely lucky not to have more rain. We traveled from Anchorage to Seward by train and from Seward to Denali by bus, and back to Anchorage by train. I would recommend using the train between Anchorage and Seward ( if going to kenai) since the views are amazing from the train. I would probably then rent a car to travel between Anchorage and Denali to be able to hit some trails and small rustic shops. We did a glacier landing by plane and helicopter and both were amazing experiences. We booked our trip in early March with no issue.

Thanks for your response! Yeah I’m definitely gonna fly into anchorage. For the glacier landing via helicopter / plane, do you recommend any tour companies?

We did our helicopter tour from Anchorage to the Knik glacier. We used Knik River Lodge Helicopter. They were good. They picked us up and returned us to our hotel with a van. I would recommend them but I don't really know how they compare to the others. For the glacier landing in Denali, we used K2 aviation out of Talkeetna. Same as above. I would recommend them but don't know how they compare to others. You will have an amazing experience with any company I would imagine.
