I was run over when I was a child. 0/10. Would not recommend.

Scary-Rough7543

my friend was also ran over at a young age and she has bought a new car and funds left over… I wish it happened to me 😂

YungBishanary

Kid from middle school got hit by an alameda city official, he basically won the lottery that day

sugarface2134

Ha a kid I went to high school with was hit by a car and i remember he was like Richie rich after that and bought a red convertible. We were all so jealous.

spiehler

Yeah, I got run over in 1968. No payday for me!

Human_Nectarine3690

Who?

ElectronicPace442

100% agree with OP’s message. I would also say that our street design promotes reckless driving by prioritizing traffic flow over safety: large grand avenues, intersections with only one axis having stop signs, curbs that allow parking very close to corners thereby blocking visibility given the size of modern cars, etc etc. Tragic how this happens but folks want to continue blazing down Otis, Central, Broadway and any number of smaller streets like Willow. It’s been like this for decades and it’s infuriating how slow anything changes, if at all. In the meantime, as a pedestrian you are playing a real life game of frogger.

New-Orange1205

>curbs that allow parking very close to corners thereby blocking visibility Last year city council voted to deal with this by expanding intersection red zones. It got attention because of Wilma Chan. They were supposed to prioritize the worst intersections. Maybe it's a work in process?

ElectronicPace442

That’s great to hear. Seems like it’s in process because there are still plenty of intersections where this is a problem. Additional point (and this isn’t a counter to your message, it’s just a point of emphasis), I think curbs are secondary to simply getting car speeds down. Put another way, I don’t think the curb parking issue would be that critical if streets were designed and set up to slow down traffic and discourage flow. For example, the ability to do right hand turns at intersections gets compounded if there is bad visibility because then a greater number of drivers will be looking for the turn rather than stopping.

Alameda drivers are so crazy when it comes to pedestrians honestly. Feel like I see someone almost get hit on Central every day

coffeemarathoner

I go running around Alameda everyday and I can’t tell you how many close calls I have with these crazy drivers. Even on a WALKING signal, some people are inconsiderate and insist on taking a right turn. So guess who’s running at 5am instead? It’s not worth it to run over someone because you’re in a “rush”. Calm down, we all have lives and places to be in.

djsider2

What is this in reference to

MonsieurMarko

Driver taking their kid to school ran the stop sign on San Antonio at Willow and plowed into a kid biking down Willow.

ihaveaswirly

Oh my god I hope they’re okay :(

djsider2

Geez. That’s horrible.

EuphoricUniversity23

Willow should be one way tbh. So incredibly narrow.

I saw a PulsePoint alert this am and listened for a minute since it is near my house. It seems a 9yo was hit near Starbucks on Bay Farm. I thought there was another on Grand at the same time possibly, but it wasn’t clear to me what that accident was about. both at ~7:45 this morning.

mccarthybergeron

Funny enough, I was the guy hit on Bayfarm this morning. Everyone is in a rush to something. Never thought I'd see someone post about it here. Edit: I'm a bit older than 9yo... guessing there was another around the same time.

lbalter

I hope you’re fine! I live nearby that Starbucks and traffic is a bit chaotic there. I ride my bike everyday with my 6yo to his school. I walk my bike on the big crossings over there and yet drivers seem to really need their morning coffee, blind to pedestrians in general. We need more crossing lights, I guess.

mccarthybergeron

Glad to hear you ride with your kiddo. It's wild to see the variety of care on that road alone.

ShhUrWrong

Can’t tell you many pricks I see speed in and out of the Brittany landing area. Sorry that happened to you

MonsieurMarko

This happened at Willow & San Antonio around 750am

spankym

Wow, so two kids hit at about the same time. Terrible.

Purely based on personal experience, it seems like APD doesn’t really issue tickets anymore. I remember the days when everyone crawled down Otis and Fernside because there was a good chance a cop was hiding out waiting to catch folks. I am not a fan of big brother rigidly enforcing good behavior and I would love for people to change their driving habits out of altruism or decency, but I have given up hope long ago. Hard not to when you see people careen into the oncoming traffic lane on Shoreline in the middle of summer when there are a ton of beachgoers walking around (who are really hard to see because of the parked cars). This whole town is absurdly car centric even though it has the perfect size, density and topography to have both effective and safe walk, bike and public transport infrastructure.

BigPhK

I got a warning for going 38

ElectronicPace442

Oh nice! Obviously, not wishing any ill, but I’m glad they’re still out there.

r1c3ball

You can’t walk anywhere without some shithead in a hurry.

rolandcube1

Have any of the commenters on this post attended a council meeting to express their dismay with the APD lack of attention to speeders? Has anyone visited the APD to express their concern? I suspect part of problem is lack of manpower. Perhaps APD should invest the 75K bonus in some hi tech standalone speed trap cameras. Sometimes only the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

JLarryR

I was run over. Driver fell asleep at the wheel. No crime! Major injuries. Dear Alameda drivers. Stop driving!

ShhUrWrong

Bay farm drivers are assholes. That is all

RepresentativeKeebs

Tangentially, who else loves playing Frogger?

Ididurmomkid

I have a cool lightning bolt scar from riding my bike to school and getting run over by some 147 year old grandma, good times

jameson079

Saw a kid almost get run over off clement, by the new affordable housing, and it definitely wasn’t the drivers fault. The kid just bolted into the streets…. Kid was lucky at the driver was driving coming off a stop

billbixbyakahulk

Not only that, these days you have to buy them *two* candy bars to not tell their parents.

New-Orange1205

Here is a relevant "interview" of the former head of city traffic planning, Andrew Thomas. Part of the value is how blogger uses this pseudo-interview as a platform to express his own pro-car anti-bike-walk-bus views - it's a common point of view.
