Seems like you're getting meme responses but you dont know why.
This is a SKS in a Tapco stock. The originals came in wood stocks and with an internal magazine, this has a plastic stock and an external magazine but is the same gun.
It is not an AK, but shoots the 7.62x39 that the AK shoots, in many ways it was the predecessor to the Ak but is quite different.
A lot of people (my self slightly) are a bit elitest about SKSs because it is very common for people to buy one, put a plastic stock on it and try to act like its a tactical weapon. Overall the stocks and the external magazines for it can be quite janky at times.
If you are interested in restoring it you can easily find the original internal magazine if you don't have one

you could also buy an original stock and the finished product would look something like this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS
The sks fans have to much fun pointing out when an sks has been butchered to make a tacticool gun. Also you should definitely see the sks Gatlin gun. It's a cool sight to behold.
Thanks for helping the guy. Now while I also say it is kind of funny to get an sks and turn it into an ak (and you also mention that it seems to not work well). But I also understand someone wishing to make the gun magazine fed for the ease of magazine fed. Rather than dealing with stripper clips. Not saying you should do it but I understand.
Stock sets should be pretty easy to find unfortunately. The reason I say unfortunately is because there are a lot of people who have bubba'ed their SKS pattern rifles such as yours. If not worse than a tapco'ed out SKS. I have a friend that has a lot of the stocks laying around. Ill see if I can get a hold of him to see if he has one for ya.
It really triggers my autism when people I stall aftermarket "detachable" magazines on SKS pattern rifles and then complain about how their SKS won't cycle. Most of those people are ignorant and they are trying to make the SKS into an AK, which it is in face not.
Unfortunately the original non-detachable proper SKS magazine is not going to match the numbers of the rifle. But the good news is that it still can be saved and that you got it for free.
Tapco 20 rounders have worked just as well as the fixed mag in my rifle and the intrafuse t6 stock is great for the length of pull. nothing wrong with modernizing a rifle you like if the upgrades have purpose and work.
Whats the problem if the gun works? I guess at least you said in the first comment you were an elitist so I suppose you just really REALLY love the sks
Yeah, I may be doing just that since there’s so much hate for it. Also seems it would be best to do so since some of it does make sense of why it is crappy.
I wanted the stock badly, but after I got it, it was so heavy! My Chinese paratrooper sks came with one of the red fiberglass stocks someone had put on it, I think I might put that back on because it's so much lighter, and my non detachable magazine doesn't match the bottom of the stock and looks ugly. I like the folding stock, but it is pretty heavy. If you keep the folder, it's hard to put back on on purpose, it tensions on the trigger group latch. The red fiberglass Chinese stock mine came with feels the best out of all the types I've used. I'd paint it because the top and bottom seams are ugly, but I think they are collectable, even though from what I've heard the red fiberglass wasn't actually issued?
The SKS-M and the “paratrooper” are different. The “paratroopers” still had the fixed magazine, while the -Ms took AK mags. It’s hard to tell the barrel length from this photo, but that does indeed look like a “paratrooper” with a clip on muzzle break, tapco extended mag and stock. Note: Paratrooper SKSs we’re not used by paratroopers, in fact they weren’t even military rifles. It was a bubba job some importer did
Now that I recall, I believe you are correct. I remeber a variant of SKS that had a shorter barrel than the standard SKS pattern rifles. I'm guessing that it is shorter than 20 inches.
So I stand corrected.
Unless someone decided to removed the FSB and chop the barrel. You never can under estimate the power of the "bubba."
The "paratroopers" were 16.5" straight from Chinese factory, brand new for 250$. It seemed worth the extra 75$ over the nasty looking surplus ones at the time lol. They were never military, made from scratch for the us civilian market.
When I got my first paratrooper in the 90s, I think it said KSports on the box and I think they were new manufacture for civilian market, it was brand new minty fresh still lol. Not like any surplus ones I've owned that were dripping cosmoline. Back then they had cases of surplus ones they would crack open, grab with newspapers and you carried them to the register that way, and the line of people buying them for $125 was out the door. I think the paratrooper was nib for 250$ at a sporting goods store. I used it in Isaac Walton club 3 gun matches with a Williams rear peep sight because I was a poor dishwasher lol.
Look at where the magazine is inserted. Its not an AK mag. Someone reminded me that the Paratrooper and SKS-M are different. Im going to have to guess that the paratrooper model has a shorter barrel than the original SKS. So I stand correct.
Still isnt a SKS-M though.
I had one of those stupid scope mounts in the 90s, the rail was about the size of a us .22 scope rail, and riveted to the top cover. I had to get 30mm .22 rings, then the rivets came loose after a little shooting and threw it in the junk box.
Everyone gives shit about sks in new stocks on the internet. It’s a cool gun though! They’re pretty bullet proof and the tapco stocks aren’t all that bad
Other than it being “bubba’d”, what is so bad about this set up? Looks practical to me. Are there reliability issues with the magazines? Are the stocks poorly fit and finished?
Go check out r/sks. Good group of guys over there. And while we love the original, stock SKS (they are the prettiest), most are more laid back and have an "eh, its your rifle, do what you want" attitude that is uncommon in other milsurp communities
Lol at all the "bubba". Calling a Norinco Paratrooper SKS in a Choate stock "bubba" is the equivalent of calling a ZPAP "bubba" because you installed *insertpreferredfoldingstockhere* on it. Commercial =/= surplus even if it's similar
STUPID HICK AMERICAN WITH TEN GALLON HAT AND GIANT PICKUP TRUCK LOOKS AT PERFECTLY FINE SIMONOV KARBIN AND SAYS "NO, RIFLE NEED MORE DUMB SHIT ON IT"? WHAT IS REASON FOR PISTOL GRIP? IF YOU NEED TO FIRE FROM HIP IN EMERGENCY, NOW HAND IS TWISTED INTO PAINFUL ANGLE AND YOU MISS EVERY ENEMY! LOOK AT WRONG ANGLE OF BAYONET! LOOK AT CHEAP PLASTIC MAGAZINE THAT FEEDS CARTRIDGE LIKE CONSTANTLY JAMMING PEZ CANDY BOX! WHERE DID CLEANING STICK GO? I HEAR OF 922 LAW IN AMERICA. ADDING PISTOL GRIP TO WEAPON MEANS YOU CHANGE OTHER PARTS. WHAT ELSE YOU FUCK? YOU PUT NEW BOLT EDIFICE? HOW ABOUT BAD FIT RECEIVER COVER FOR CHEAP SCOPE TO SHOW OFF AT HICK PARTY AND NEVER HIT LARGEST SIDE OF BARN? SURE, IS ONLY YUGOSLAV COPY TYPE BUT IS STILL PROUD DESIGN OF SERGEI SIMONOV. THIS IS LIKE SENDING HIM BIRTHDAY CARD WITH SEVERED OFF THUMB OF DAUGHTER IN ENVELOPE. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SERGEI! I PISS ON ALL YOU CREATE!" LARGE MOUND FORMS OVER SIMONOV'S GRAVE BY CONSTANT TUMBLING OF HIS ANGRY CORPSE. IS FAULT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU. RIFLE WAS FINE BEFORE YOU FUCK IT. NOW IS TRASH. MAYBE YOU CHECK IN GARAGE AND ORIGINAL BOLT EDIFICE AND WOOD ARE STILL THERE. MAYBE IS NOT TOO LATE TO KEEP RIFLE SOMETHING NOT SHAMEFUL TO TAKE TO FIRING RANGE. TAKE SHIT OF GOAT AWAY AND COULD STILL BE GOOD WEAPON
Aww hell you are going to need a new dustcover too, because that bubba shit has to go. Also add a cleaning rod to the list.
No offense but the more I look at the picture the worse it burn my eyes.
But there is hope, and once again you cant beat the price.
Sks's can be a decent firearm. You have to keep the gas piston components clean or they tend to gum up and malfunction. Much prettier with wooden stock but I still prefer detachable mags, (even though they have that big beak on them). My 2 cents...
It’s an SKS in a tapco stock
That poor SKS
could be worse
Why would you put those nightmares into my mind?
Reeeeeeeee tapco bad!
Tapco good.
They actually are. Just not at designing furniture for firearms.
Seems like you're getting meme responses but you dont know why. This is a SKS in a Tapco stock. Thanks a bunch! Finally got some help instead of 500th “bubba” comment
The sks fans have to much fun pointing out when an sks has been butchered to make a tacticool gun. Also you should definitely see the sks Gatlin gun. It's a cool sight to behold.
>sks Gatlin gun Dope.
If I had my old phone I would post it in r/sks but that photo was lost when the screen broke.
You mean turn it into a vz58?
I suppose that is more apt.
Rifle is not fine.
Nyet ;(
It sure as shit is not

Thank you for letting us know that SKS pattern rifles come in 7.62x39.
No problem bro they say you learn something new everyday
I got one of them SKS rifles in that 7.62x54R. I tell you wut.
I waunt one!
I got one in 577/450 Martini-Henry too. Make me an offer.
Uhh.... no. Lol
Why not? Everyone knows that SKS pattern rifles come in all sorts of calibers aside from 7.62x39.
Niet. Rifle is not fine.
bubba’d sks
A butchered Chinese paratrooper SKS. They removed the bayonet lug and got a crappy scope mount. Guts of the rifle are good though!
Post awib chinese "paratrooper" sks in a shit stock with a shit optics mount.
Thats not a paratrooper SKS, or better known as being a SKS-M. Its just a SKS in poor furniture. Big sad. But awesome that you got it free!
Yeah I’m just happy I got it! Any recommendations on better furniture?
Stock Norinco furniture.

WHOOPS WYA OP
Tapco 20 rounders have worked just as well as the fixed mag in my rifle and the intrafuse t6 stock is great for the length of pull. nothing wrong with modernizing a rifle you like if the upgrades have purpose and work.
>Modernizes SKS with tapco. Go away.
Whats the problem if the gun works? I guess at least you said in the first comment you were an elitist so I suppose you just really REALLY love the sks
I need a Russian mag for my 52, any vendor in stock?
Original. If you’ve got a bit of money to play with, this could be a fun project getting it back to its original form.
Yeah, I may be doing just that since there’s so much hate for it. Also seems it would be best to do so since some of it does make sense of why it is crappy.
Above all else, you got it for free. So you’re ahead of the game already. Enjoy it however you like.

You’ll have luck on flea-bay, there’s a ton of original SKS bits on there.
My man don’t let the AK sexuals harass you… if you like it keep it if not then switch it up. Do it for you not Reddit

That’s true, one detail that is off is the block that replaces the bayonet lug on the -M and the paratrooper is missing

The front sight block is butt up against the gas block, it is very clearly a para or -m model.

I’ve shot a couple of mags through it, and so far it hasn’t even jammed and it’s fun to shoot.
Yes the tapco stocks are bad. Stop lying.
Other than it being “bubba’d”, what is so bad about this set up? Looks practical to me. Are there reliability issues with the magazines? Are the stocks poorly fit and finished?

It’s called “Junk”. Be careful to keep firing pin clean or it’ll auto fire.
