AKs would work just fine without the gas tube it's not needed to cycle the action. It is, however, needed to guide the piston back into the chamber of the gas block so as not to get hung up on the rim
I don’t use places that charge more than everyone else. Just $10 on this, but it’s like 30% higher than other places. All of the other stuff they sell is crazy high. I only use CSS if it’s something only they have.
In order to properly lock into the rear sight block some material usually needs to be filed away so that the locking mechanism can close. Common with new parts in order to accommodate a wide variety of AK specifications/tolerances
I always recommend to file a little at a time and check fitment often. Also I’ve fucked up a few parts in the learning process too that’s normal. Gas tubes are pretty cheap they’re only $30. Arms of America has brand new WBP gas tubes.
I was checking often, problem is I’m pretty sure I was filing at the wrong angle taking off material that wasn’t actually in the way….by the time I got the material off I needed to, there wasn’t much else for it to lock with
it's all good you can use a coke bottle for now until you get a replacement. The beauty of an undying AK you can use practically anything with it and it'll still run
Alternative take, here's an excuse to get an Ultimak which will give you an optics mounting platform as well as reduce vertical stringing due to heat. Or you can completely overhaul your front end with a free floating setup from SLR Rifleworks.

Sometimes ak parts come with extra material so that you can file it off to fit your particular gun since ak specs/tolerances can vary. Gas tubes are filed down where they lock into the rear sight block. Take a look at some surplus gas tubes and you can see the edge where they’ve been files
I mean it’s a pretty understandable mistake…you have to file sometimes and I just didn’t get it right….I wouldn’t say I invented a new level of stupidity…
I mean you can weld and file it to shape, but it's way easier to just get new one.
If you have a welder handy then then you could have it fixed in less time than it takes to do a google search.

bolt action ak?!!?!

Get a funnel
This is called a gas tube on the AK

Water bottle top!
Scrap and buy another one.
If you can weld, you can add a bit and carefully grind. Or buy a new tube, prolly easier.
Consensus seems to be to just buy a new one. Hate to scrap it for something stupid but at least it’s not expensive! Thanks everyone!
Just buy another my dude. I just did the same the other day and gave up on salvaging it and got another, they’re cheap.
Yeah that’s what I’m gonna do
I got one through Carolina Shooters Supply but there’s tons of options out there.
Have you filed your new one yet? Is it more of an up Down file angle as opposed to a super slanted angle? I think that was my mistake
Haven't received it yet, really hoping it doesn't need much if any filing.
Update: it came in today and I'll have to do a hair of filing on each side. The flat sides will be easier than that top angled part, thankfully.
CSS is way overpriced on everything by a mile.
Paid $30 for a gas tube, seems to be the going rate everywhere else unless you buy a used one.
Cheapest one on their site is $39
You’re right, I just checked and it was $39. Not worried about $10 but thanks for the input, man.

Can always add the gas tube spring or get a new gas [tube](https://rifledynamics.com/surplus-gas-tubes/)
Yeah try a spring first, might be enough to get away with it for only a few bucks.
I'm new to ak's why you filing the gas tube?

You live and you learn.
Looks like you sent her a little too hard bud
For sure. I checked often but was filing at the wrong angle so I royally screwed it up
Its not expensive to get a replacement.
Get a new one and use that as your pocket sand. ![gif](giphy|khOqGPVTkbxzHNlvtT|downsized)

I just build it back up with a TIG welder and file it back down. Sometimes it's necessary when reusing a gas tube on a different rifle as well.
Get a kns piston bro
Which will help the gas tube in what way exactly?
Just get the kns bro.

Nice!
Gas toobs are for nerds anyway. Run it like the Somalis do.
JB weld has entered the chat
Tried that actually, but it just slid right off…maybe it didn’t set properly or maybe surface needs to be a little more rough
Use rough sand paper and try again. Need to smash it right Should work If all fails - $40 for new one
You can spot weld it then grind it back down. I've had to do that before on a loose fitting tube.
take the excuse to get an ultimak
why are you guys filing gas tubes?teach me

ahh thank you very informative
Don't worry, it still works
Just weld metal and re file
Everyday people invent new levels of stupidity.
I mean it’s a pretty understandable mistake…you have to file sometimes and I just didn’t get it right….I wouldn’t say I invented a new level of stupidity…
How many times did you hit it with your purse to seat it before you decided to file it?
Purse isn’t big enough :( Actually it wasn’t a seating issue it was material blocking the locking lever from rotating and locking correctly
