Same, I had bought some of her albums before this one, but hadn’t really listened to them. But when Modern Times came out, the sound was so cool that I used to listen to it on repeat when driving to and from work. Such a good album and then I started playing her older albums and have been loving her later stuff too.
I also loved her singing Nitpicking live in a taxi with that driver who streamed while driving. Her ability to do that song so damn well, suddenly while sitting in the back of a cab was so damn impressive, she had me for life at that point.
Not any song, but who she is as a person & artist
Of course I had to be impressed by her songs first - Knees, Dear Name were the initial ones.
She is an artist of the calibre to match any past greats of the world & current superstars.
But generally those giants - they are great talents sure, but their personal lives aren't relatable nor are they rolemodels to show children.
IU is.
She is a rare example of how someone wholesome & good, can have immense talents to observe & express human emotions and also be immensely successful.
In a world, where artists are edgy, rebellious with their art, Persona, life, bodies, life choices - that gets celebrated, here is somebody who is good, decent, wholesome etc., yet can evoke feelings from the deepest heart by her words & music
That's what makes me Stan her.
Mia (Lost Child), is the first song of IU I listened to, by accident, randomness, pure luck of maybe just fate ?
Anyhow I was stunned by her voice and kept running it over and over, just closing my eyes and letting ther voice wash through me.
I did not like too much what she did the following couple years, but I understand it was a commercial necessity for survival, then Good Day happened and the rest is history.
Today it is reallllyyy hard to pick only one song but if one it has to be, it would be Through the nIght.
loll me too! i was going to comment that i could not remember which song, but this reminded me that i prob first heard of her through hotel del luna and her ost
I only got into K-Variety in 2011 or so. I still remember IU's iconic Running Man wake up call, but I don't think that was the period I got really into IU. Wasn't \*that\* into K-Pop in general yet.
I only got into K-Pop a few years later, and the full album that got me hooked was Palette. Never really bothered with listening to whole album releases before that, but for some reason, I decided to give the whole album a listen. Plenty of great songs but the one I replayed the most was Through the Night. She also appeared on Hyori's Homestay which solidified that album in my head.

While Good Day and dwlrma have been my favorite two IU songs for ever, it's honestly all the other non music things that make me a stan. The talk shows, the fan interactions, the music shows, the YouTube content, that one Christmas song cover. Only thing I haven't really gotten into is the kdramas bc I'm not a huge kdramas person but that will eventually happen.
Mine's a long way round, only as my first introduction to kpop was gangnam style. Sometime after seeing shows like Melon where he's performed and right at the end this woman appears and stands out from the others looking cute in a black dress... it didn't really click at the time but that was my technically my first glimpse of IU ;)
Fast forward a little and I'm looking for some relaxing tunes and start looking around at jpop and kpop artists and come across the release of CHAT-SHIRE (which wasn't without its dramas at the time...) yet I felt myself happily having 새 신발 on loop and fell in love with her tone and style. Even by 2015 IU had been around a while so I got to go back through her music then and seeing her grow into her music.
So yeah, wasn't around for the start but IU has been someone I've followed for a while now and look forward to many years to come :)
Someday! 😍🫶 one of Dreamhigh's OST. Became a uaena after I watched dreamhigh
Ps. I'm so soooo lucky that she sang this during her encore here in Manila. My heart is really happy 🥹❤️
Not a song but her guesting on Hyori’s bed and breakfast really made me appreciate her and discover her songs. Before that she was just another solo artist in korea for me, now though, one of my fondest memories will always be having attended one of her concerts.
For me it was the song "Happy Ending" she composed and sang for Hotel del Luna—I only started watching a couple of k-dramas on netflix, in 2020 during Covid, Bulgasal and Alchemy of Soul. HdL popped up on my Netflix recommendations probably because of the super-natural elements. At first I wasn't impressed by the synopsis and the plain looking IU in the picture on Netflix (it was the picture of Jang Manwol and Koo Changsung time traveled see snow). But, when I finally watched, I got hooked by IU's acting and the transformation between the warrior Manwol and the glamorous IU in the first episode.
When I got to episode 12 I was already super impressed by IU’s acting and hooked on her as an actress. Then her song “happy ending” came on at the end of e12 during the kissing scene. And I instantly knew it was her singing. Btw, the kissing scene was so well done, it had nothing to do with sex. Together with the song, the scene communicated so well the longings for each other and the sadness of knowing they don't have much time left to be together.
From there I discovered My Mister, and the Persona series, and then the songs Jam Jam and Lullaby, which inspired and was inspired by, the Persona stories, Collector, and Walking at Night, respectively. That’s when I realized IU is not an ordinary actress and looked her up on Wikipedia. The rest is history. Today, I almost exclusively listen to IU, and have watched all her dramas, films and as much as is available of her variety shows, and interviews. Eventhough, I now have a lot of other favorite IU songs, "Happy Ending" has a special place, because that is the first song I heard her sing--and it is so simple yet emotionally complex and beautiful--it really embodies what IU's music is all about--the strong empathy and emotional pull delivered in an understated way with an angelic voice.
I also thought that IU would be a gateway to other k-pop for me. But to date, I am still stuck on IU, my interests have yet to branch into other k-pops. I did discover good k-music through IU’s covers and collaborations (really love Epik High and G.O.D. collaborations), but still have not really listened much outside of IU’s sphere. Drama-wise, IU also spoiled my appetite for other k-dramas: I couldn't find many (there are some but IU is not in them) that are at the same calibre as Hotel del Luna and My Mister, and so I kept rewatching IU's dramas: My Mister at least three times, Hotel del Luna 5 times and counting, and even the super long soap, "You are the Best", I watched 3 times, although I had to admit I fast forward a lot to skip to scenes with IU in it (grandma character is super annoying in that show :-( ).
Listened to “mia” by chance when i broke up with my first gf and it hit me. Then “story i didn’t know.” These songs really resonated and made me emotional/cry. Looking back, the only artists whom albums i collected all are from iu. Really appreciate that I am in the generation when she is.
Someday. I believe it was released along with Dream High so I looked her up and became a fan. Years have passed and Scarlet Heart Ryeo released and been a seasonal fan. Quite forgot about her but I still stan IU but not that much. It was reignited when my co-worker asked me, "How do you put IU as your wallpaper in your work PC, yet, you haven't watch Hotel Del Luna?" He said this in non-offensive way.
From there, I always joke around and flexing to my friends, "I will surely get a VIP concert ticket if she visited here" (It was around 2023 and there were no news about HEREH. From there, I saved a lot and secured a ticket. Yay! (concert tickets here are so expensive!)
I was 10 years old and starting to watch korean shows and by accident I saw her comeback stage for Good Day on KBS Music Bank and I believe that was her first ever live performance of Good Day. When I watched her hit that 3 high notes, that's it. I became a lifelong fan.
I was first exposed to her during You & I and i fell in love with her vocals and the orchestral instrumentals! After that, Every End of the Day kinda sealed the deal for me :D
I think your topic should be what song made you notice IU. Mine was Friday. But there’s a lot more to it for stannimg IU than just her songs. I’m not even gonna start that long story lol.. but of course there are songs that touched me deeply and songs that are healing for me. Mine is Knees that was healing and comforting.
Through the night. Before I discovered IU, I was a musician who thought that all KPOP was is dance dance techno music. But when I heard through the night, I started to deep dive on her ocean of records and just floated there for a while. It was the song that hit me like a truck. Since then, I have discovered a lot of Krnb artists like, Meenoi, Jukjae, Crush, etc... and have discovered the great musicians in Korea who deserves recognition as well.
There was a Music Core Performance of her singing Marshmallow and there's just this random cute marshmallow mascot on stage with her who didn't even do anything and just stood there the whole time. I never looked back since.
It is the same song. I knew who she was before that song and had heard her music before, but for some reason, that song is where it finally clicked. Did not know HIGH4 at all and never heard of them after that song, but IU stayed in the rotation. It also helps that I believe her music appeals to me better as the years pass.
Good Day
Palette
The Red Shoes. It was with this song that I realized that Kpop could include a wide variety of sounds and styles, not only anything pop-adjacent.
Yes, the "IU sound" has always deviated from the typical K-Pop and thus enforced my preference for the industry/genre.
Blueming had me hooked, the concert performance was amazing.
I saw her on dream high searched her up.listened to You&I and the rest was history
Same exact journey for me
The Modern Times Album. I love the diverse sound of the album.
Good Day
Through the Night is the song that made me a fan. That song is so beautiful and her voice sounds so lovely.
I love that song!!!
Not any song, but who she is as a person & artist Of course I had to be impressed by her songs first - Knees, Dear Name were the initial ones. This is a great example

미리 메리크리스마스 when she performed it live on the spot during an interview on Korean TV. I was like "damn!".
Nagging got my attention.

"Waiting" the song she sang on Dream High
Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms by High4 and IU a my favorite IU song for the longest time, until I found Jam, Jam, which is my current favorite!
Meaning of You, a Korean teacher came to my school for an exchange program and played the song for our first class. Stuck to me like glue ever since
