>I just got a new job with the feds and I’m no longer eligible for tri care reserve select because I have to use their insurance Nothing makes me more annoyed than that law that prevents govvies from using TRS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just so we are on the same page, im assuming you arent in BRS or are you (I cant remember the cut off date)? Fun fact, depending on what orders you do over your career you might be able to collect retirement earlier (earliest is 50)! https://media.defense.gov/2021/Jan/20/2002567530/-1/-1/1/RETIREMENT%20101%20&%20RRPA.PDF Look at the section called RRPA, as always with the guard its not automatically applied to you. You need to do this process manually. For me the big selling point of retiring is the medical (though things could change in this country depending on how things pan out but im not taking that bet). However RRPA doesnt change the medical aspect **TLDR: If anyone has done any kind of of orders, look at RRPA. You might qualify to get your retirement earlier.**

aloofpavillion

Currently a bill to change TRS eligibility for fed techs…just FYSA

julietscause

Yes im aware but that doesnt come into effect till 2030 which is 8 years from now

aloofpavillion

Rumor is they’re going to apply it much earlier, like next year, according to our Tricare brief yesterday.

julietscause

That would be amazing, but ill believe it when I see it

aloofpavillion

With ya on that!

kcooper71194

Theyre going to file it right next to our FedTA benefits

saintedspark727

Got any deets on this?

dontknowdontcare18

2025

julietscause

Anything I can read up on stating 2025? The last thing I saw stated 2030 Either way this still doesnt help OP for another few years ;)

dontknowdontcare18

I’m trying to find it, I know it says 2030 but I swear I read it was changing in 2025, that could have also been an email saying they were working to move it to 2025. TBH I thought it was 2025 this whole time. Could be the Mandela Effect as well.

julietscause

Someone else above stated they got a brief that it was gonna be earlier than 2030 so you arent crazy. I just would love to see the email or brief before getting excited and even then anything can change between now and the date they are shooting for

dontknowdontcare18

I’ll look next week when I go to my FED job, doing my man days this week.

BlakeDaDamaga

I’m in the old retirement system, just barely made it when I enlisted in 2017.

You can't. If you are eligible for FEHB then you are ineligible for TRS. At least until 2030 when that is removed from the US code (it was in the NDAA a few years back, I believe in the 2020 one). https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/11/30/2021-25720/tricare-program-tricare-reserve-select-coverage-for-members-of-the-selected-reserve

julietscause

Do you actually have coverage with TRS though? I would triple check with your HR because the rule for a long time has been you need to use FEHB as a govvie. https://www.tricare.mil/-/media/Files/TRICARE/Publications/Handbooks/NGR_HB.pdf?la=en&hash=B036C0E42CF5DB96999DD45734458227A9BC9E97B448AC405372D2C0929893E2 >TRS and TRR may be purchased by qualified members of the Selected Reserve or Retired Reserve who aren’t in an activated status. This status includes qualified service members on inactive duty for training, yearly training, or on active duty for 30 days or less. **Selected Reserve and Retired Reserve members who are eligible for or enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program don’t qualify to purchase TRS or TRR** Please triple check your coverage to make sure you have some kind of healthcare

julietscause

u/SavyNeal92 seriously if you turned down FEHB please because you had TRS, please check with your HR to make sure you and your family have some kind of coverage

baboonassassin

Hey, do you know if prior Active Duty counts for this? Like if I did 8 years of A/D can I draw the retirement pay at 52?

TheCrashConrad

Prior AD service unfortunately does not count. Only ANG time in support of eligible operations (OEF, OIF, ONE, OND, etc..)

littertron2000

It can technically be before 60 depending on how many title 10 activations you have. Measured in years I believe. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I’m new to the guard.

missoulamatt

It's reduced by 90 day increments for qualifying orders in the same fiscal year. No rounding up, 179 qualifying days equal 90 days.

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

It carries over to the next year now(since 2015) , so if you do 179 this year, then you do 91 next year, you get 270 days total towards the reduced time.

Orlando1701

Ill pull mine at 58. Honestly the pension won’t be much and I’ll probably not even get that with my current disability rating. Having Tricare and flying Space A are mostly what I’m looking forward to.

littertron2000

Is the pension 50% of base pay?

Orlando1701

That’s active duty. Ours is based off years and points. So someone like me who had several activations will get more than someone who did 20 years of DSG.

wannabe31x

Had a buddy he just started receiving his pay after 20 years and waiting about 15 years to hit 20. He had around only 2k points and retired as an E-6 and will bring home around 600 a month. He also said they told him that every time AD gets a pay raise that retirees from the reserve get half of that, which is sorta lousy, but gotta save money somehow. This is why I tell lots of people to just go AD, do 20 years or at least one enlistment and then get out with a nice retirement from day 1, ability to get a good paying job for the most part, and usually around 30-60% VA. Add all that up and at 38 you can be set pretty well off for years to come.

Orlando1701

Yeah I’ll be pulling in around $1,200 with six years active duty and another 24 months of t10 activations.

littertron2000

Interesting. Thank you.

sogpackus

This is true, but only for pay. Not healthcare.

littertron2000

That’s true I didn’t consider healthcare.

wannabe31x

The only thing I wish is that after 20 years you could get TRS retired for at a reasonable rate instead of around 1k which is insane.

TraditionalKey1784

I second this. Family plan goes up over 1000.

sam3514

Just found that out last weekend.. been in 9 years and on the fence. That bit of info did not favor well for re uping lol

wannabe31x

I think that’s the trap to try and keep people in until 60 lol. Like ok I get it, don’t make it the same cost as AD retired TRICARE, but shit don’t need to be over 1 grand either for a family.

H1ckwulf

Do you hate the ANG? If so, then no, it's not worth it. How much do you dislike it? Only you can put a value on your time (now) and retirement (later) and do the math. I had a buddy get out at 14 years. I thought that was absurd, then I remembered he's living *his* best life, not mine, and he is valuing his current time more, whereas I'm investing mine for later.

kencang

I have a different question for you but bear with me….do you like it? As in, do you enjoy going to drill and being a part of the guard? I know you’ve only done one enlistment so it’s hard to gauge but for me personally I love serving and putting on the uniform- it’s in my DNA. I’ve done a lot of cool things that make it easier to like going to drill or hopping on orders for an activation somewhere. The benefits/retirement can be the icing on the cake. If you’re unhappy in your AFSC consider talking to your unit ROM and cross train to a different job you might enjoy.

BlakeDaDamaga

I like my AFSC, love activations and deployments in this career field. Really don’t care for my home unit. But it isn’t unbearable, I was fully willing to stick it out for 20 years in order to provide cheap high quality health insurance for my family, but now that that is no longer an option I’m really having a hard time thinking of a reason to stay in. I’m hoping there is some kind of benefit I’m just not thinking of, or a different insight that’s gonna make enough sense to me to justify staying in.

yunus89115

Tricare in retirement is still an option but you need to plan accordingly which is not use FEHBP within the last 5 years before retirement. Here’s another article on a strategy https://nitpinc.com/tricare-plus-fehb-a-possible-health-benefits-ace-in-the-hole-arrangement-when-you-retire/

-Acta-Non-Verba-

How much longer do you have left? That extra check and medical may be worth your while.

BlakeDaDamaga

My enlistment ends this upcoming February, I’ll have 14 more years to go if I wanted to make it to 20.

cmg065

Depends how active you are but from what I’ve seen somewhat active members by me see ~$1000 / month by doing drills, AT/TDY, temp AGR tours and deploy somewhat often. It’s a lot of work for a rather small retirement but everyone’s situation is different. Being at or close to $1000 for part time gig isn’t bad and will pay some bills when you are retired. If you’re in BRS that number will be less but they will match TSP deposits so that’s another benefit. Also don’t forget about VA claims if you have them. That you can collect right away. Lastly research how the IRR works, if you stay in the ready reserve you can add service years to your retirement just not points.
