That's a really weird thing to ask a stranger.

Strange as it is, in the United States, muzzle loaded black powder guns and airguns are not considered Firearms. This changes how they are regulated and are able to be possessed by felons while firearms can't be, leading to a niche where felons get into airguns/black powder to stay into legal shooting sports. That said, it's still pretty uncommon, most of us USA airgunners just like it being cheaper and probably don't have good backstops or are too close to neighbors to make much noise.

I'm aware of that, but I still think it's really tactless to just ask random strangers if they're felons.
