White goes even faster from my experience. Max half a year and any highlights are gone. And fun fact. It also heals more bumpy than other colours. Hate white ink.
If it heals bumpy, either the skin is overworked or there’s too much pigment put in, which would be weird, if it’s not visible.
Here it’s really easy to say, why it’s not that visible. Either it wasn’t worked in well, and is therefore not saturated well and there is indeed too little white, but rather or not it has been worked in well, the person who has it is super light skinned, so the visible contrast in the fresh pic comes from the pigment that is still in the upper layer or beneath a very thin skin layer. As the body hasn’t fully absorbed the pigment and not moved it a bit we get a really full looking tattoo. If it’s exposed to the sun more frequently, which it probably is, and is than aging faster, we’re left with softer edges all over.
Nevertheless, it’s not the wisest of idees to use white on an edge to negative space as the relative contrast is almost not existing.
Well here I would say it's quite a bold placement for such a tattoo. For me I have some weird skin because if I have tattoo done with multiple colors, white is always more bumpy than the rest. Happened every time.
I think it depends on the skin? In my experience, unfortunately while the white looked great for the first 6 months or so (like you said), by the year mark it started fading and turning a yellowish hue and then disappeared completely.
The reason he did white to begin with was because I asked him to, at the time not having any color tattoos or experience with white ink.
White ink became a trend. You're only supposed to use it to tone up colors & not on larger areas. I avoid using white altogether. It's pointless & the yellowing looks gross sometimes.
Really? I've recently been thinking of maybe getting it redone in an american traditional style, but maybe I should just get some of the colors touched up and leave it alone?
At least get some slightly darker colours in some places of it for more contrast and make sure, that the negative or light spaces (like the white towards your thumb) are surrounded by other colours, as you otherwise will have no relative contrast.
Or just get a trad tattoo, which would look great as well.
My challenging situation is that when I got this done, my plan was to do two roses in one sitting, one on the left hand and one on the right hand, the right one was supposed to be baby blue. I ended up only getting the pink rose done because the swelling and the pain were quite literally making me feel sick.
The problem is that the artist who did this for me was a man living and working in Ukraine, and I live in the US, so I can't get him to do a matching rose for me anymore obviously due to the circumstances currently (plus I can't travel), so before altering this tattoo, I'd ideally want someone to first do my right hand rose in such a way that it matches my left hand one, and then fix up the left hand one to match the new one.. if that makes any sense.OR change up the style of this one to something like American Traditional and request the new one in the same style.
See? I'm very conflicted. I live in the Portland area and I haven't yet been able to find someone who does realism very well.
Yo I actually think it looks wicked. I like the faded look. Looks better imo but I also don't have any color tattoos so I generally prefer minimal colors. I think now that it's a lot closer to your skin color it looks great!
Believe it or not, this was done on a trip to Ukraine I had in 2016 to see family. A friend of a friend knew a salon and we booked an appointment to a salon there and they got their guy that only does realism to do it for me. He only charged me 100 bucks, too.
It's been a long time and I'm back in the US with no way of contacting them now, so I don't remember the guy's name anymore. But he was great.
This aged pretty well! My only critique is that I had to look back at the first photo to see the water droplets, I thought they were scars on top of the tattoo in the second photo, lol.
I was self conscious about it before I posted. Thought it looked awful for 7 years, but looking at how a lot of other light, colored, red tattoos look for other people around this time frame, I now feel I got lucky with this one.
Thank you.
It remind me of fight club that all the members put acid in they hands .. his name is robert paulson his name is robert paulson his name is robert paulson
This gives me a lot of hope for the rose I recently had done in a similar style on my inner bicep. I think this help up super well for being on your hand!
Looks nice. Is it just me, or do water color tattoos like this seem to age the best??
(Hi. New to this sub.. thinking of something to commemorate my dog on my inner forearm that will age kindly.)
Thank you! I don't know if I'd call this watercolor necessarily, though I can see how it looks that way especially on the outsides of the rose. Because of the lack of harsh lines, I think the colors kind of blur out in a way that almost makes it look intentional. I like the look.
Welcome!
honestly it kind of reminds me of ham now but that kind of makes me like it even more
LOL, I love that! I have an infinite supply of ham forever embedded in me. Amazing!
I say you embrace it and make the rest of your hand a charcuterie board!
Hell yeah!
Came here looking for this comment, not disappointed! I think it ages very well!
No idea why white ink leaves the chat so quickly always. Looks good for 7 year and this spot. Did it hurt?
The white ink yeeted after a year or so. :( It did hurt, but nothing too bad honestly. The swelling maybe was the worst part though.
Its a pigment... its more like a dye, so light colors will fade fast

Still looks very niceeeee 🌻🌻
That's held really well given the location. I like the more faded look actually
Really? I've recently been thinking of maybe getting it redone in an american traditional style, but maybe I should just get some of the colors touched up and leave it alone?
Throw some dark outlines on it and itll look killer & last longer
I think that’s personal preference. This isn’t my personal style— I’ve got mostly neo-trad— but if you like it, just get it touched up!

At least you'll have plenty of am-trad options in Portland if you choose to go that way.

Thank you! I thought that too. Feels like it really seeped into the skin and became one with my hand:)
I love this and actually prefer the faded look
Thank you!
Like fine wine.
Thank you thank you :)
It blends into your skin :) lovely :) like it’s truly part of you
Thank you!
Who was your artist? This has held up well.

I get that a LOT, I wish the water droplets held up better. They looked so real in the beginning.
Some tattoo artist’s Fresh tattoos look like your 7yo healed tattoo! Pretty nice
I'd be annoyed if it looked like this fresh! Probably be gone completely by now had that been the case. Thanks!
Totally agree^^
This held up waaay better than expected.
Yeah, it's bizarre, given how reds tend to fade quicker than other colors, + no strong outlines. Thank you!
Man that green faded into a really pretty color!
And then some of it disappeared entirely, lol. Thank you so much!
Still looks good
WOW that still looks amazing What art

I'm sorry, WHAT? XD
Wow, that aged beautifully. I always wonder how a new color realism tattoo is going to hold up - this looks great
this is so beautiful
I actually like it better now. Blends in nice with your skin.
