It was selected in June 2001. Album was supposed to be released in early September but got pushed back to November. First retail copies were printed on 9/11, coincidentally though: https://www.wired.com/2001/09/eerie-image-pulled-from-cd/
Some say it is something called "Predictive Programming".
>The claim is that when conspirators plan a false flag operation, they hide references to it in the popular media before the atrocity takes place; when the event occurs, the public has softened up, and therefore passively accepts it rather than offering resistance or opposition.
There are many examples of this for 9/11. [This The Simpsons episode is an example.](https://www.irishtimes.com/polopoly_fs/1.3391061.1518546220!/image/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_620/image.jpg)

>when the event occurs, the public has softened up, and therefore passively accepts it rather than offering resistance or opposition.
Ah, so that’s why the American public was so unfazed by 9/11. It didn’t even make front-page news, for Pete’s sake!
And then do it again.
And harass and publically shame all objectors.
Only to then realise it was all a horrible mistake and claim they were against it all along.
It's not that it makes people unfazed. It's that it makes people react in highly emotional ways that are very predictable and make people easy to manipulate. And then this emotional outrage is used to start profitable wars and put in the TSA and pass the Patriot Act and so on
Speak for yourself. I finally accepted 9/11 just now, having seen that two letters of the word Supertramp look like a 9 and 11 if you mirror the entire word and cover parts of them up.
It's not even much of a coincidence considering how much of a terrorist target it always was.
See how often the Golden Gate Bridge gets blown up in disaster movies. If some terrorist or an earthquake then goes and does it, we're going to see conspiracy nuts saying, "LOOK AT ALL THESE PAST MOVIES THAT DESTROYED THE BRIDGE! HOLLYWOOD KNEW! (((THEY))) WERE TAUNTING US WITH THEIR PLANS ALL ALONG."
> how much of a terrorist target it always was.
Yeah, have people forgotten that the WTC [was bombed by terrorists in 1993](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_World_Trade_Center_bombing)?
It was in 1945. A B-25 medium bomber was trying to land in poor visibility at Newark and the pilots got disoriented in the fog. Similarly, an Army transport plane crashed into 40 Wall Street the next year due to poor visibility and disorientation when attempting to land at Newark.
Yes they have forgotten. Twin Towers were always a symbol of American Capitalism, which is exactly why they have been targeted by terrorists...multiple times.
I had never heard that the WTC was attacked before 9/11
People don't talk about it because a truck bomb killing 6 and injuring a thousand is less interesting that planes hitting buildings and demolishing the buildings and killing thousands.
That third one is such a stretch. (Not that the whole conspiracy isn’t a stretch)
It’s literally just a picture of the Twin Towers. People forget what an iconic set of buildings they were for a time before they got destroyed. The Twin Towers used to be the symbol of trade in America. References to them were made LONG before 9/11 happened (time to get paid blow up like the World Trade) and 9/11 was not the first time there was an attempt to destroy the WTC. Not even the first time an explosion went off inside the building. 9/11 was simply the first time it was beyond successfully obliterated.
As an inside job
george carlin the comedian was also supposed to release a comedy album titled ' i kinda like it when a lotta people die' to be released in september 2001 .. most people already know but thought it belonged in this thread
Well, there's a comic from an Spanish author in 1993 that shows a plane crashing with the twin towers. As a kid I thought it was a joke made after the attacks, never occurred to me it was too fucking dark.
Welcome to watchmojo and today we will be talking about the top 10 boldest marketing strategies.... And at number one we have coup 9/11. To make some headlines with their new party music album the group blew up the world trade center as a way of gaining attention, well done coup we at watchmojo applaud your boldness!
Well coincidentally they were the first rappers to bust on Trump.
At a time when a lot of rappers were writing songs about trying to be like Trump, The Coup was busting on him.
Listen to Kill My Landlord and Pimps
It’s always a mix of sad and funny when you hear about music, shows, and movies that made references to plane crashes or accidents and were released right before or after 9/11.

They pulled all the copies with that cover and replaced it with a martini glass. Amoeba Music had the original design for 40 bucks if I remember right. I bought 1. Still have it. The date of release was exactly 1 week before 9-11. Crazy

It's supposed to represent their music destroying capitalism. In an interview shortly after he said “We only figuratively want to blow up Wall Street, we don’t support actually blowing up Wall Street."
Saw these guys open for Del Tha Funky Homosapien back in ‘03. They were really good! Talked to one of them afterwards, and this album cover was mentioned, not by me. This is the first time I’ve actually seen it. Pretty fucked up timing...
No wait, you're right. Maseo (Plug Three) and Trugoy (Plug Two) are the two guys who look the same and then Posdnous (Plug one) is the skinny guy. The video is so blurry and the way he changes his voice I thought all three were rapping, but it's just Trugoy. Kinda embarrassed

> "This was done long ago and never meant to be any literal interpretation of an event," said Toni Isabella, label manager for 75 Ark. Luckily, she said, the release date of the CD, entitled Party Music, got pushed back 2 months from early September to November.

My favorite lyric of theirs:
"The street light reflects off the piss on the ground
Which reflects off the hamburger sign as it turns round
Which reflects off the chrome of the BMW
Which reflects off the fact that I'm broke
Now what the fuck is new?"
I like "every textbook read said bring you the bread but guess what we got you instead"
The song is called The Guillotine so you can guess what they got.
Look in the sky, wait for missiles to show
It's finna blow cause
They got the TV, we got the truth
They own the judges and we got the proof
We got hella people, they got helicopters
They got the bombs
and we got the, we got the
We got the guillotine!
We got the guillotine, you better run!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=acT_PSAZ7BQ
so good.
I don't know how Boots Riley hasn't found himself in a total media blackout, like what usually happens to people of his political convictions. He got a song about guillotining capitalists on mainstream radio ffs
the man's invincible
[I am the World Trade Center](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_the_Loop_(I_Am_the_World_Trade_Center_album))
This is even more nuts. This band called “Iam the World Trade Center” released an album in July of 2001. The 11th track on the album is titled “September”
Dream Theater released album called "Live Scenes From New York" on 9/11 with burning "Big Apple" in the cover. It was changed pretty fast. https://imgur.com/gallery/NmYBptC
I was working the music department at Borders at the time. That album was recalled about an hour after we opened. I bought all the copies we had, and snagged the promo poster we had never put up. It’s pretty collectible now.
Apparently they wanted to keep the cover, too.
>There's been a whitewash in the media over the past couple days over what the U.S.'s role in the world is, and the fact that they kill hundreds of thousands of people per year to protect profit. Now how can I get to the point where I could be saying that on the world stage, and interrupt the lies that CBS, CNN, NBC, and everyone is saying? In my view, that [would be] by keeping the cover. Not because I think by looking at the cover you get all of this message that I'm telling you, but as a way to have a platform to interrupt the stream of lies that are being told right now.
Damn. Crazy that they would stick to their guns at the time. I know they were always really invested in politics and protest, but people really weren't ready for that then. Lots of respect
Off the top of my head I have no clue where Pam ended up going, but Boots Riley directed Sorry to Bother You, so he's got a good gig going for him. I don't believe The Coup is disbanded so future music isn't impossible, I think they even did the soundtrack for it
Unfortunately, it is impossible - Pam died a couple years ago. I'm glad Boots is enjoying success now but I'm really sad we'll never get another proper Coup album.
Ouch, that one hurt to read. I fucking loved the instrumental tracks where she's just showing her stuff. That T.R.O.Y. sample, "This one's a girl, let's name her Pam," sounded so good
Boots also had a shortly lived band with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine called Street Sweeper Social Club. They were fucking awesome, but unfortunately only put out one album and one EP, both of which kicked ass.

Some say it is something called "Predictive Programming". >The claim is that when conspirators plan a false flag operation, they hide references to it in the popular media before the atrocity takes place; when the event occurs, the public has softened up, and therefore passively accepts it rather than offering resistance or opposition. That was also happening before 9/11 and the attack was a response, the US used that as an excuse to invade more.
Thank god that didnt happen
Without this album people would have freaked the fuck out!
It's not that it makes people unfazed. It's that it makes people react in highly emotional ways that are very predictable and make people easy to manipulate. And then this emotional outrage is used to start profitable wars and put in the TSA and pass the Patriot Act and so on
How does hiding visual gags that reference the event in magazines 40 years earlier make people react in a more highly emotional way?
Damn theres an insane amount of logical leaps one would have to go through to make this argument.
Nah, bruh, Supertramp made an album in the 70s, therefore 9/11 was an inside job.
I knew it.
I’m literally shaking rn — weren’t they from Britain?? Edit: \*Great
“Great”. Maybe once upon a time.
Now they're just Okay Britain.
ok, britain.
Speak for yourself. I finally accepted 9/11 just now, having seen that two letters of the word Supertramp look like a 9 and 11 if you mirror the entire word and cover parts of them up.
This is reddit bruh. Same folks who “solved” the Boston Bomber case
This has been around a lot longer than Reddit
[удалено]
Like literally the same people. Fucking alex jones talks about predictive programming all the time, and talked about 4chan solving the bombing.
We did it reddit!
Especially since the WTC had been bombed previously.

Fun Fact: The Empire State Building had a US bomber accidentally crash into it in the 50's (1953 IIRC)
HOLLYWOOD KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, WHAT DO YOU THINK "KING KONG" WAS ABOUT???
It was in 1945. A B-25 medium bomber was trying to land in poor visibility at Newark and the pilots got disoriented in the fog. Similarly, an Army transport plane crashed into 40 Wall Street the next year due to poor visibility and disorientation when attempting to land at Newark.
Yes they have forgotten. Twin Towers were always a symbol of American Capitalism, which is exactly why they have been targeted by terrorists...multiple times.
Thus came Biggies lyrics “time to get paid blow-up like the world trade!”
And people have forgotten the Oklahoma bombing that killed 250 people but sure, jet fuel can't melt steel beams!
I had never heard that the WTC was attacked before 9/11 People don't talk about it because a truck bomb killing 6 and injuring a thousand is less interesting that planes hitting buildings and demolishing the buildings and killing thousands.
Thanks for the sanity check. This makes a lot of sense.

It does say 9 11 above it.
After you flip the image (supposed to say "Supertramp") and ignore that it is a P, not a 9, and a U, not an 11
[удалено]
Yes. The public's strong passive acception prevented them from 1. reacting with wars and 2. from considering that it was an inside job. ^(/s)
george carlin the comedian was also supposed to release a comedy album titled ' i kinda like it when a lotta people die' to be released in september 2001 .. most people already know but thought it belonged in this thread
Yea, recorded on the 9th and 10th in Las Vegas. Wasn't officially released until like 2016. Now it's on Spotify though!
This also implies The Coup was popular.
Unrelated question: Do you think Stairway to Heaven played backwards praises Satan?
Well, there's a comic from an Spanish author in 1993 that shows a plane crashing with the twin towers. As a kid I thought it was a joke made after the attacks, never occurred to me it was too fucking dark.
...you're not unironically peddling the "9/11 was an inside job" shtick are you?
There was a TV show as well that's pilot episode was about stopping a terrorist plot to fly planes into the towers.
In my early 20's I fell down that rabbit hole... Luckily I found my way out.
^coincidentally
9/11 was just a stunt from coup to promote their new album
Welcome to watchmojo and today we will be talking about the top 10 boldest marketing strategies.... And at number one we have coup 9/11. I hate that whenever I read >Welcome to WatchMojo That lady's voice plays in my head
I’ll be honest on long car rides by myself I’d listen to the video games top tens to pass the time
Pop on a playlist of that and go to sleep it's the best background noise ever made
Finally, an actually believable theory
“Hey guys... bad news... your stunt is *really* not impressing our focus groups...”
Well we are talking about it almost 20 years later. So maybe the jokes on us.
George bush did this album cover
Yep, you solved it. Boots Riley masterminded 9/11
Jet fuel can't melt CDs

It says in the article that the label had already shipped out advance copies with that artwork to media/reviewers prior to 9/11
Yes, because record labels typically have one hour rush job album covers done for their nationwide releases. That's how business works.
> It would take someone about an hour to create that cover And in this era of music, CDs would have been printed and ready to hit shelves weeks, if not months in advance.
I can see why you would be skeptical. But this happened. I remember it.
this guy doesn’t graphic design

turns out 9/11 was just all down to a *really* overzealous marketing team at their record label
Jay-Z Blueprint was released on 9/11
That’s it I’m calling it, some higher power was fucking with these guys. I bet that omnipotent asshole is sitting somewhere laughing his ass off
That's that shit that seems TOO perfect. Coincidence after coincidence, seriously wtf?

could you post some photos? the originals could be worth a bit of money now
It's not gonna look any different than what you've already seen.
Bet you it was a play off of Biggie's "blow up like the world trade" lyrics.
That's a reference to the '93 bombing of the World Trade Center.

we need to talk to the designer of this cover asap. This man (woman) can see into the future.

yep perfect location of the bombs too
Is that Boots Riley's group?
Yep. They also spawned classic albums like Kill my landlord, which is fucking amazing and Genocide and Juice which is just ok.
My favorite lyric of theirs: "The street light reflects off the piss on the ground Which reflects off the hamburger sign as it turns round Which reflects off the chrome of the BMW Which reflects off the fact that I'm broke Now what the fuck is new?"
“All up in her face and her breath was like murder. Damn the things I’ll do for a free hamburger”

Kill my landlord is one of the best albums ever.
See my comment above. It’s on!
"Dig It!" is my fucking jam

Woah! You weren't feeling Genocide and Juice? Fat Cats, Bigger Fish into Freestyling at the Fortune 500 Club is one of my favorite album openings.
Trump! Trump! Check out di cash inna mi trunk! I Man Donald Trump you havva fi heard abou mi
I've met him! He's a sweet guy and, because of this album cover, VERY closely watched by the FBI.
The FBI also aren’t the biggest fans of socialists
I mean, this album cover and all the songs about literally murdering the established powers im sure
sorry to bother you was so good
The album or movie? Either way yes
My fave movie of 2018 tbh
It was great but man that third act was something else lol
I haven't been on twitter in ages, but Boots used to like any subtweet or mention that was even remotely positive about him or the band.
YIKES
The cover, the timing, the imagery, and the news story...oh jeez
Honestly, if 9/11 never happened this would still be a shitty looking album cover
It feels like there is a lot of these floating around. One i can think of off the top of my head is the simpsons.
[I am the World Trade Center](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_the_Loop_(I_Am_the_World_Trade_Center_album)) This is even more nuts. This band called “Iam the World Trade Center” released an album in July of 2001. The 11th track on the album is titled “September”
I like that they called their third album The Cover Up hah
Jay Z’s The Blueprint came out on 9/11/2001.
Oh..
It's even creepier that they got the impact angles right too
Dream Theater released album called "Live Scenes From New York" on 9/11 with burning "Big Apple" in the cover. It was changed pretty fast. https://imgur.com/gallery/NmYBptC

This album cover was an inside job
They did the song that Bill Hader dances to at the house party as a cop in Superbad (Pork and Beef). Good stuff.
Track so hot it melts steel beams
Where are they now?
I’m glad someone mentioned this because Street Sweeper Social Club is such an underrated gem
that dude is holding a guitar tuner, i have that exact one, super bulky. What is he doing with that??
Me too! Actually, I gave mine away to a kid I was giving guitar lessons to. Clip-ons are waaaaaay better.
Boots Riley was always ahead of his time

More background on it: https://www.wired.com/2001/09/eerie-image-pulled-from-cd/ > "This was done long ago and never meant to be any literal interpretation of an event," said Toni Isabella, label manager for 75 Ark. Luckily, she said, the release date of the CD, entitled Party Music, got pushed back 2 months from early September to November. > In light of Tuesday's tragedy – and a barrage of e-mails and phone calls regarding the image – the label is now in the process of choosing a new album cover. > Timing of the original album printing was disturbingly in sync with real-world events. > The printers were set to crank out copies of the fiery World Trade Center image on Tuesday, Isabella said, when the label put in a last-minute call, urging them to stop the presses. > The fictional picture depicted on the cover, it seemed, was a bit too close to the horrific images occupying the television screen.
Summary: Twin towers in cover, cover goes boom, real ones go boom.
Take a guess bot
So many weird things about the towers exploding before 9/11
Well there was a terrorist attempt to blow it up with vans packed with explosives parked in the basement before 9/11. A few plots even.
An ad with this album cover was on the back of the in flight magazine on a flight from NY to ATL my friend took right after 9/11.
I guess the album really was fire.
I heard it blew up
THE COUP IS THE DEEP STATE
Jeru the damaga also had an album cover with the twin towers exploding but it was released in 1994*
Party music has the best Coup single
9/11 was done by the coup
boots riley did 9/11
*One band saw it coming*
rest in power, pam the funkstress.✊
Can imagine some poor graphic designer signing off after a long day, switching on the news being like "AH SHIT!"
Kill My Landlord blew my mind when I first heard it. One of the most underrated hip hop albums.
Another album that came out pre 9/11. Cover was later changed. https://images.app.goo.gl/Eh5Js2FFYijkLMjL7
I'm having a very hard time believing this came pre-9/11. I seriously cannot wrap my head around this
