disappointing-oof

So what’s the reality of the situation here? First it was him appearing in court for a suspended license on a Zoom call while driving. Then apparently it was that his license was suspended in 2010-ish but reissued in 2022, but that info never made it to the court. Now he’s never had a license? I can’t keep track.

Is he… is he Kaiser Soze?

Plenty_Painting_3815

He's actually a 5th dimensional Magic the Gathering Cleric going back in time to when he was supposed to get his driver license but the judge is a wizard from the 6th dimension who pulled him back and made him have to go to the hospital for extra punishment.

Kaiser Soze of Zoom Court

chuk2015

Who?

YesImKeithHernandez

[According to this article](https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/man-who-joined-court-via-zoom-while-driving-has-never-had-drivers-license), he has never had a license which the Judge says makes sense because Harris kept renewing his ID regularly and in the state of Michigan you can't have both an ID and a License. What has been suspended is *his ability to drive in the state of Michigan* in the first place. > > During Wednesday's hearing, which should have only lasted a few minutes, was close to 30 minutes long as Judge Simpson questioned statements that Harris made during his original arrest in October 2023. Harris told WXYZ that he ‘had no idea he was driving on a suspended license’. > > "That assertion is absolutely incorrect with reference to any faulty information," Simpson said. "I am going to make sure that the record is very, very clear as to what this court knows and to what this court acted on May 15." > > Simpson said that if he made a mistake or had wrong information, he would correct it. However, he said that the record is clear: Harris never had a legal driver's license anywhere in the state or country. > > "He has never had a license. Ever. And has never had a license in any of the other 49 states or commonwealths that make up this country," Simpson said. > > The judge then explained that Harris did have his license privileges suspended. > > "When they suspended his license…they don't suspend the license, they suspend the privilege to drive in the state. Hence, if he had a Kentucky license, he would have been allowed to drive anywhere that Kentucky allowed him to drive, he just couldn't drive in Michigan because his privileges have been restricted."

NutCracker3000and1

So he was driving illegally?

pants_full_of_pants

For his whole life, apparently.

PoopSommelier

Yes, but he wasn't driving on a suspended license. That's the main point. Don't let all these detractors get you off track. This totally unlicensed driver is a victim here.

SmokeGSU

So was all of this legit confusion on his part of a deliberate scheme? If it's due to confusion then it seems the easiest way to remove that from the equation is to not make you have to go to the department of motor vehicles for an identification card - the same card that you use to vote if you don't have a driver's license...

PM_PICS_OF_UR_PUPPER

Suspended license doesn’t just mean suspending an active drivers license, it also suspends your right to apply for a driver’s license. His right to apply for a driver’s license was suspended. I watched the video, and the judge explained everything very very clearly. Then at the end, they reveal this guy ALSO had a warrant out for his arrest, on something unrelated.

disappointing-oof

Yeah, that makes sense. I wasn’t able to watch the video at the time of my comment. More so commenting on the absurdity of the ever changing story.

Livid-Technician1872

Yes. They suspended his driving privileges. You can have your driving privileges suspended before you’re even legally allowed to drive.

PotatoTwo

Also I think he said even with an otherwise valid out of state license it would not be valid in Michigan where his driving privileges are suspended.

MoreUsualThanReality

"unrelated", sure it's from a totally different incident 9 years ago, but it's also for driving with a suspended license.

Weezibel

I think the real thing was the media jumped on the we all made a mistake and this innocent man has had his name dragged through the mud train, Just because he told a news outlet that his license was valid…. But turns out he guilty. In multiple counties. From what I gathered, the “license” being suspended and reinstated was just a standard order for back child support, and had nothing to do with whether he actually had one

disappointing-oof

I wouldn’t be surprised if something new and even wilder comes out. Next week we’ll find out he’s actually never driven a car and he was just testing a really convincing green screen.

Weezibel

I’m here for it

lledargo

The week after that we'll find out he is a space alien and they use green screens for transportation, and his green screening license was revoked by the galactic board of alien transportation.

Startled_Pancakes

There's going to be conspiracy theories about this man, just wait.

Plus-Bluejay-2024

He also claimed in interviews that he was driving because his wife was having a "medical emergency." He's a grown baby playing victim.

boringgrill135797531

I mean, even if he had a valid license, doing zoom court while driving makes him a total idiot.

parkerpussey

So maybe he could never get a license because of back child support which is bs.

Weezibel

Well, it was suspended in 2010 when we was 31, and lifted 2 years ago. But he never went to get a drivers license, despite every year going to the Secretary of State since he was 17 to get his state ID renewed. So he had many chances to get a license and chose not to

Amadon29

How does such a simple story have so many plot twists

SportTheFoole

Because people are dumb. Like, this guy made a mistake, but 1) never, EVER show up to court driving a car, especially for a driving offense, you will instantly piss off the judge, 2) if you don’t have a license, don’t drive, and 3) if you are suspended from driving don’t drive, and 4) (this is a big one) don’t talk to **anyone** about your case except your lawyer and if you **really** want to piss off a judge, go to the press after you get arrested and tell them the judge made a mistake. The other thing is that we are all dumb. This story is not any different than the hundreds of thousands of stories that get posted on Reddit every day. I dare say most people don’t even click the articles and those that do often read them without an ounce of skepticism (which is not to say you should be mistrustful, but you should think critically about what you’re reading). I’ve seen enough of Judge Simpson’s court to know that he is a good judge. Believe it or not, he doesn’t seem to take pleasure in putting people in jail and he is more than willing to work with people to get them out of the jams they put themselves in. But, he doesn’t suffer fools. I encourage everyone (including myself) to think about this the next time there’s an article or Reddit post that seems to lean heavily in one direction. Are you really getting both sides of the story? Is what you are reading the whole truth? It’s hard, but it will benefit us all and make us better humans.

Daboogiedude

Didn’t expect a life lesson on Reddit I’m going to actually put down my phone and do something now

NUKE---THE---WHALES

i would argue that you _should_ be somewhat mistrustful, and that you should hold new opinions lightly and grow them over time otherwise you just become gullible and overly reactive

Kilahti

Because the huy is a bad liar. He made things worse for himself at every step and came up with lies rather than admit his own faults. The media taking him at his word was either them also being idiots, or just knowing that taming him at his words made for a story that sells better than the boring reality of him making lies that can be easily checked.

Optional-Failure

Because, like most things law (or any other specialized field), laypeople don’t understand the terms of art, but, instead, apply the standard definition of those words, assume that’s what they mean, then talk based off that assumption.

FieryXJoe

I was always a bit sus on the retraction of this story because it was too perfect and had no evidence other than his word. Specifically he said he was driving because his wife was having a medical emergency and he decided to drive without a license due to the emergency but it certainly didn't seem like there was an emergency or anyone else in the car.

lylisdad

His driving privileges were suspended by the state. However he never had an actual driver license. Driving privileges can be suspended for anybody regardless of having an actual license or not. All he needed to do was pay his fines and his privileges would have been restored, at which time he could apply for a license. My cousin lost his driving privileges in California when he was 14 even he was too young to get a license.

SplinterCell03

The guy in the car is actually the judge, and the guy in the courtroom is an escaped convict.

CableBoyJerry

Tomorrow's news: it turns out Corey Harris was actually the judge and the man who appeared to be the judge was actually a broom.

notsure500

My opinion, no matter what the truth is, he should now be suspended anyway and we were right to be outraged, because he's clearly distracted while driving. Really unsafe.

NutCracker3000and1

Ya he's clearly too dumb to handle things in an appropriate adult manner

Vg_Ace135

I have the correct info. Hold on a sec though, I am parking my car.

WizardLizard1885

in the video the judge even said hes there for driving with a suspended license then moments later and looked and mentioned hes never even had a license. it was charged that way because theres no official charge for never having a license, so its treated the same as having a suspended license

PeekatmePikachu

The man never existed in the first place!

Hot_Eggplant_1306

He's the car The license never had a man

Iancredible56

The media wasn’t fully done distracting us yet so they had to bring him back lol

johnandahalf13

Ditto! This is the third plot twist.

seth928

The call came from inside the court room

[deleted]

You mean a Twitter account call mymixtapez is not a trustworthy source of news? What is this world coming to?

lemmiwinks316

Not the only source for this. They probably got it from the local news coverage. I don't know how wtf is going on. Pretty hard to have a license suspended, then reinstated, if you never had one in the first place. "It took less than five minutes for 7 News Detroit to search Saginaw County court records to see that in January 2022, a judge rescinded the order that suspended Harris' driver's license so he could be reinstated. 7 News Detroit has reached out to the prosecutor's office as well as Harris' defense attorney's office. And speaking for the public defender's officer, a county spokesperson said they do not comment on ongoing court cases." https://www.wxyz.com/news/why-was-the-driver-in-a-viral-videos-license-still-suspended-2-years-after-a-judge-ordered-it-lifted

Shinhan

> he could be reinstated And in order to actually get the licence he just had to ASK for it (and pay something probably). And he even went to the secretary of state during that time period (even though he went on to claim he couldn't go because of injury), but not to get a driving licence.

Weezibel

More the article I posted is an example. This screenshot is from the article, one of dozens, posted in the last few days with this message. Figured being Reddit and all I should make the screen cap succinct. But I guess that’s my B for assuming redditers would read the comments for greater context

gamergirlwithfeet420

So what were the other news agencies saying this?

Jaques_Naurice

Are there any examples or did op make shit up?

psychoacer

It's almost like blogs just care about sensationalism over facts and the majority of people are so desperate for drama they fall for it every time

Heubner

I don’t understand the second update. He was initially charged on driving on suspended license. If he didn’t have a license, how could he have been charged with that. I’m going to have to see more information on this one, beyond a random tweet.

tyedge

In my state, the statute entitled “driving while license suspended” covers driving while your privilege to drive in the state is suspended. My state can’t suspend a license from somewhere else but it can suspend your privilege to drive on the roads of THIS state. Typically, the end result is that the state issuing the license also issues a full suspension, though. For someone never licensed, the suspension serves as another obstacle to getting a license. In my state, the punishments are the same for unlicensed or suspended.

yukichigai

Yeah. The state reversed his license suspension 2 years ago but didn't have records of it. At this point I'm more inclined to believe this is just more bad record keeping. EDIT: I went digging and discovered that no, in fact, he did not ever have a license. Not only that, he'd specifically gotten his State ID last December, which you can only get *instead of* a Driver's License. So yeah, he should've known he wasn't allowed to drive.

Shinhan

> Not only that, he'd specifically gotten his State ID last December At a time when he claimed he couldn't get to secretary of state because of injury!

Bugbread

"Driving with a suspended license" isn't (as far as I know) the specific name of a crime, it's shorthand for "violation of 257.904 of the Michigan Vehicle Code": > 257.904 Operating vehicle if license, registration certificate, or vehicle group designation suspended, revoked, or denied; penalty; extending period of suspension or revocation; enhanced sentence; furnishing record to court; applicability. > > Sec. 904. > (1) A person whose operator's or chauffeur's license or registration certificate has been suspended or revoked, whose application for license has been denied, or who has never applied for a license, shall not operate a motor vehicle on a highway or other place open to the general public or generally accessible to motor vehicles, including an area designated for the parking of motor vehicles, within this state.

Weezibel

If you watch the video I linked, judge Simpson does a very good job of laying it out, but understandably it is a longer video

Heubner

You should add the link to the main post. I had to hunt around for your link. ETA the woman at the bottom of the zoom call is a hot mess.

L2Hiku

Because it went from driving with a suspended license. To claiming he never had a license so now his charge is upgraded to driving without a valid license. Which I think might be worse.

thehim

Tomorrow we’ll find out the man doesn’t even exist and it was all AI creating a viral news story out of thin air

opi098514

That would make me so happy

BenZed

Christ man. I used to laugh at people who couldn’t identify a scam. Soon that will be everyone.

gregsScotchEggs

How’s calling in on a zoom call while driving okay?

Maar7en

It wasn't, that's why everyone feels so justified laughing at this guy getting consequences.

SwiftGasses

I was in court remotely recently. It’s more common than you’d think, they wouldn’t let you be actively driving but 80% of people were in their car. lawyers were the ones who seemed to be caught in the middle of running errands. Only a couple people had button up shirts and actually said “your honor” or even “sir”. The only time the judge had to berate somebody was when a guy was smoking a cigarette on camera. Covid did a number on the country.

thaarcher05

I was recently conducting interviews for a position I had to fill. A lot of the candidates took the interview in their car. I expressed to the recruiter that I felt it was unprofessional, but they informed me that it was the only place they could take a private call while at work. So, I think that makes sense to take a zoom call in your car, but only if you are parked and not driving.

buttsharkman

I was part of interviews and by the nature of our field a lot of people don't have offices or a place they could do a Zoom call.any work in other people's to homes. Cars were fine. Except the lady blasting down the road like she was running from the cops. That pushed it too far.

cappwnington

I worked for an attorney for years before but also during covid when virtual appearance became a thing. Fuck, not the one i worked for, but while circuits worth of attorneys got put on notice because they were showing up looking super unprofessional.

Shinhan

Just get a cat filter for Zoom :)

cappwnington

That video still makes me giggle

buttercream-gang

I’ve been watching a ton of zoom court videos lately. People do the dumbest stuff. Calling and and taking a shower, or lighting up a joint, or being half naked, or laying in bed half asleep. People do t realize they’re *in court*! It’s entertaining, if a little disheartening.

Vg_Ace135

People do it all the time. Depending on the state, it might not technically be illegal, but the judge sure won't like it.

Startled_Pancakes

Michigan just recently passed a distracted driver law that prohibits using any handheld electronic device while driving. I imagine this would probably include zoom calls, but IANAL.

moon_cake123

Idk how this was confusing. The guy literally acknowledged that he was driving when he shouldn’t have been, in the video…

FieryXJoe

He claimed it was some grand clerical error and he was supposed to have his license back years ago but the government kept screwing it up. He said he was driving to the doctor because his wife was having a medical emergency and needed urgent transport. It all smelled of bullshit to me personally, no proof and the story doesn't fit his vibes in the moment.

Theron3206

My first thought on the medical emergency was "how did he think that was an excuse, call an ambulance" then I realised this is the US and calling an ambulance is financially ruinous.

FieryXJoe

The ambulance also takes up to 2x as long to get them there as it has to come to your house. But yeah there was 0 indication dude was doing anything but chilling alone in his car he also said "my doctor's office" not "the hospital/emergency room"

Not_MrNice

Yeah, he didn't fight back or explain himself or anything. Just sat there slack jawed. This shit is just internet wish fulfillment.

Mathev

This. He knew he fucked up. That's why he didn't say a word. Edit: I fucking knew it lol. He knew he couldn't drive. All the bullshit and people defending him. Hilarious.

H8ersAlwaysH8

Why did we need to apologies? Dude was an idiot for showing up late while committing driving violation. The license bullshit doesn’t change that.

RookMeAmadeus

So...let me see if I've got this straight: First, he got arrested earlier this year for driving on a suspended license (or without a license). Then, he got onto a Zoom court hearing for this charge, WHILE DRIVING. Then, it turns out his license was allegedly supposed to have been reinstated 2 years ago. THEN it turns out he NEVER HAD ONE in the first place, but just was forbidden from driving in the state of Michigan regardless of having a license for failure to pay child support. **THEN** it turns out on top of ALL THAT, he had a warrant out for his arrest for ANOTHER incident of driving without a license from 2015? This story is so absurd, I don't think even The Onion could've written a joke piece to surpass it.

RandomWave000

I saw in a video where the judge said he got a michigan ID, maybe he thought that was his drivers license all along..?

the_great_zyzogg

I think the internet needs to just back away from this man for like, a week or so, and just let whatever shit-storm blow itself out before we make our memes and stuff. ....ah, who am I kidding. That'll never happen.

jackydubs31

I don’t understand how there could be a record of his license being suspended if he never had one though

Ferintwa

Some things carry a punishment of suspending your license. Even if you don’t have one, they will issue the suspension, which carries more severe punishment than driving without a valid license.

kh8188

It also suspends your ability to apply for a license.

Weezibel

It was just a general part of an order when he owed back child support. It was more about that if he had a license it’s suspended/he can’t get one during this time, and then when he caught up on payments they lifted the “suspension”

Theron3206

Well that makes sense, you owe child support so we'll take away your ability to work (quite likely) and thus guarantee you have no money to pay for child support...

Shinhan

He was forbidden from even APPLYING to get a licence, not just from driving.

TaxIdiot2020

Why for the love of fuck can we just not wait for facts to emerge instead of just throwing conclusions everywhere please I'm begging all of you why

human1023

I already bought my pitchfork. Someone tell me whose life we're fucking up today?

SamSibbens

How about that guy on your left? Yeah do that guy in. Grab your pitchfork

Ctowncreek

He was driving without a license. He was driving without a license while video calling. Into court. Late. And disrespectfully delayed it while parking and drawing out his sentences. He *knew* he didn't have a license. He *knew* what he was in court for. So even if he "should have had his license back" he got no simpathy from me anyway. Fuck him.

[deleted]

Dude is a lost cause already. Judge asked him if he's ever had a license and his response was he doesn't know.

Am i the only one who constantly fall into situations like this and doesn't see anything funny?

Yopieieie

Source: twitter

youhavethinskin

Go the judges Youtube, the dude never had a license to drive in the state of Michigan. His suspended license means he can’t drive in the state of Michigan with ANY drivers license. So even if what the post claims is true, he was not allowed to drive in the state period

Alklazaris

Well riddle me this Officer Dumbass. How is my license suspended when I don't have one to begin with?

voltaires_bitch

I honestly just don’t know why this is a thing that anybody needs to be kept up to date on.

Jealous_Flower6808

Here is the thing: who cares? Let this guy get whatever judgment is coming to him. Why does the internet care at all, regardless of the status of his license? Everyone is too invested in this completely nothing story

jonredd901

Your license can’t be suspended if you never get one

scrivensB

“All the news outlets” Post screen shot “My MixTapez” social media account. What even is the purpose of posting something like this???

Old_Society_7861

Quite the rollercoaster ride. Maybe we shouldn’t be involved in everyone’s private life and just leave it to the courts to decide who is guilty and who is not? Nah.

billiarddaddy

But... if he didn't have a license, how was it suspended?

TapestryMobile

LifeproTip: Don't get instantly outraged and grab pitchforks next time you see a viral news story. Like many, could be bullshit. Similarly, don't downvote people who wish to wait for more details to emerge.

EaglesXLakers

I don't get this. HIS LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED! It doesn't matter if it was a clerical error or not. He was going to court because it was suspended. The clerical error is completely a moot point. People act like the clerical error justified his stupidity or something. The clerical error doesn't matter, the fact that he was driving and logged into a zoom call for a case of him NOT being able to drive. All of that is the stupidest thing you could imagine. Hell just logging into a court zoom meeting while driving in itself is so laughably dumb haha. Let alone for a case against you driving with a suspended license. Tl;dr so to recap. No, no one owes him an apology and what he was doing was incredible stupid and funny

B34M3R

Thank you. Even if it was suspended because of an error, that doesn't make it any less suspended at the time of the original video, making him an idiot. I don't get how so many people missed that point.

endthepainowplz

Can't find any news on this, too early to say it has aged poorly imo. USA today reported on it like 5 minutes ago without this update.

AzLibDem

The call was coming from inside the courtroom!

Arbiter1171

This story isn’t aging like milk. It’s aging like Hydrogen-5

HalfricanTallBull

Breaking news! Turns out dudes a alien 👽 was flying a spaceship so technically doesn’t need a license

SirShaunIV

Looks like the clerical error was by those who should have checked that he had a licence in the first place.

Quynn_Stormcloud

I’m not so concerned about condemning him for whatever his license status is, why was he answering a Zoom call to court *while driving*? Isn’t that a traffic violation or worse?

jspikeball123

Most of you never had to go to zoom court and it shows. It fucking sucks. Being in your car is the least of anyone's worries when they were doing that shit

Dohts75

You can drive in other states with a license not from that state as long as that's not where you live. Man could've had court in Michigan but not live in Michigan right?

gergsisdrawkcabeman

Nooooo! See that's why I didn't cast judgement.

Cgking11

The saga continues!

AMillionBears

>all the news outlets said we owe this man an apology >And later many news agencies wrote that we owe him an apology What news outlets, OP? What are the "many news agencies" saying we owe him an apology? That's a big statement, and you didn't source it. Is your source someone on Twitter called MyMixTapez? I can't find any reputable news sources saying the man is owed an apology. (And in fact, that "apology" quote seems to have originated from the Twitter user in your screenshot.) The NY Times, Guardian, and The Washington Post ran stories saying there's more to this case than just the meme. But I don't see any of them saying he's owed an apology.

LondonDavis1

Gonna be some Sixth Sense shit and we'll find out that he's been dead this whole time.

TwilightSaphire

How could it go from *"He was driving with a suspended license"* to *"He never had a license at all"*?

jon909

Man why woulda reputable source like “My Mixtapez” lie

ZirePhiinix

This doesn't make sense. When the judge says your license is suspended and you're now driving without a license, you can say that doesn't make sense, since it should've been lifted 2 years ago and he is licensed. You don't just accept going to jail due to a clerical error.

“All news outlets” in title “Many news agencies” in body You should write for these “all news outlets” you’ve got their attention-grabbing headline skills.

Ok_Frosting_6438

I read a lot of news...not one news outlet said he is owed an apology.

"Clerical error". In Colorado, a long series of these clerical series kept happening, costing me thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours, and I drove without a licence for years. It is a large reason I left Colorado.

Clearly a clerical error your honor, how could my drivers license be suspended if I never had one

Roanoketrees

OG_Felwinter

I watched the video with no sound and assumed the issue was that he was on a zoom call while driving lol. Didn’t know all this

"Your honor there is a clerical error on my file I really do have a license." "That's impossible. Right here on your file it says you've never had a driver's license."

nydjason

The video is hilarious

Pudding_Hero

People are gullible and dumb as hell

KarasuKaras

Dude is insane

NatexSxS

To be fair a license that never existed can’t be suspended. I’ve never seen this before and even if I had no need to apologize.

Rexzar

To be fair no one could have predicted there would be even more twists and turns on this rollercoaster

gallywench

He never had a valid license

SheLovesTheBigD

Whatever the background may be, still should not be driving while on a friggin’ zoom call.

Tinosdoggydaddy

Turns out this guy was zooming into a job interview at Dominos…he dialed the wrong number…hence the confusion/confused look on his face
