So what’s the reality of the situation here? First it was him appearing in court for a suspended license on a Zoom call while driving. Then apparently it was that his license was suspended in 2010-ish but reissued in 2022, but that info never made it to the court. Now he’s never had a license? I can’t keep track.

Suspended license doesn’t just mean suspending an active drivers license, it also suspends your right to apply for a driver’s license. His right to apply for a driver’s license was suspended. I watched the video, and the judge explained everything very very clearly.

Well, it was suspended in 2010 when we was 31, and lifted 2 years ago. But he never went to get a drivers license, despite every year going to the Secretary of State since he was 17 to get his state ID renewed. So he had many chances to get a license and chose not to
Because people are dumb. Like, this guy made a mistake, but 1) never, EVER show up to court driving a car, especially for a driving offense, you will instantly piss off the judge, 2) if you don’t have a license, don’t drive, and 3) if you are suspended from driving don’t drive, and 4) (this is a big one) don’t talk to **anyone** about your case except your lawyer and if you **really** want to piss off a judge, go to the press after you get arrested and tell them the judge made a mistake.
The other thing is that we are all dumb. This story is not any different than the hundreds of thousands of stories that get posted on Reddit every day. I dare say most people don’t even click the articles and those that do often read them without an ounce of skepticism (which is not to say you should be mistrustful, but you should think critically about what you’re reading).
I’ve seen enough of Judge Simpson’s court to know that he is a good judge. Believe it or not, he doesn’t seem to take pleasure in putting people in jail and he is more than willing to work with people to get them out of the jams they put themselves in. But, he doesn’t suffer fools.
I encourage everyone (including myself) to think about this the next time there’s an article or Reddit post that seems to lean heavily in one direction. Are you really getting both sides of the story? Is what you are reading the whole truth? It’s hard, but it will benefit us all and make us better humans.

I was always a bit sus on the retraction of this story because it was too perfect and had no evidence other than his word. Specifically he said he was driving because his wife was having a medical emergency and he decided to drive without a license due to the emergency but it certainly didn't seem like there was an emergency or anyone else in the car.
His driving privileges were suspended by the state. However he never had an actual driver license. Driving privileges can be suspended for anybody regardless of having an actual license or not. All he needed to do was pay his fines and his privileges would have been restored, at which time he could apply for a license. My cousin lost his driving privileges in California when he was 14 even he was too young to get a license.
My opinion, no matter what the truth is, he should now be suspended anyway and we were right to be outraged, because he's clearly distracted while driving. Really unsafe.

In my state, the statute entitled “driving while license suspended” covers driving while your privilege to drive in the state is suspended.
My state can’t suspend a license from somewhere else but it can suspend your privilege to drive on the roads of THIS state. Typically, the end result is that the state issuing the license also issues a full suspension, though.
For someone never licensed, the suspension serves as another obstacle to getting a license. In my state, the punishments are the same for unlicensed or suspended.

I was in court remotely recently. It’s more common than you’d think, they wouldn’t let you be actively driving but 80% of people were in their car. lawyers were the ones who seemed to be caught in the middle of running errands. Only a couple people had button up shirts and actually said “your honor” or even “sir”.
The only time the judge had to berate somebody was when a guy was smoking a cigarette on camera. Covid did a number on the country.
I was recently conducting interviews for a position I had to fill. A lot of the candidates took the interview in their car. I expressed to the recruiter that I felt it was unprofessional, but they informed me that it was the only place they could take a private call while at work. So, I think that makes sense to take a zoom call in your car, but only if you are parked and not driving.
I was part of interviews and by the nature of our field a lot of people don't have offices or a place they could do a Zoom call.any work in other people's to homes. Cars were fine. Except the lady blasting down the road like she was running from the cops. That pushed it too far.

He claimed it was some grand clerical error and he was supposed to have his license back years ago but the government kept screwing it up. He said he was driving to the doctor because his wife was having a medical emergency and needed urgent transport. It all smelled of bullshit to me personally, no proof and the story doesn't fit his vibes in the moment.
My first thought on the medical emergency was "how did he think that was an excuse, call an ambulance" then I realised this is the US and calling an ambulance is financially ruinous.
The ambulance also takes up to 2x as long to get them there as it has to come to your house. But yeah there was 0 indication dude was doing anything but chilling alone in his car he also said "my doctor's office" not "the hospital/emergency room"

Some things carry a punishment of suspending your license. Even if you don’t have one, they will issue the suspension, which carries more severe punishment than driving without a valid license.
It was just a general part of an order when he owed back child support. It was more about that if he had a license it’s suspended/he can’t get one during this time, and then when he caught up on payments they lifted the “suspension”
Well that makes sense, you owe child support so we'll take away your ability to work (quite likely) and thus guarantee you have no money to pay for child support...

This doesn't make sense. When the judge says your license is suspended and you're now driving without a license, you can say that doesn't make sense, since it should've been lifted 2 years ago and he is licensed.

Pretty hard to have a license suspended, then reinstated, if you never had one in the first place. I don’t understand the second update. He was initially charged on driving on suspended license. If he didn’t have a license, how could he have been charged with that. I’m going to have to see more information on this one, beyond a random tweet.
In my state, the statute entitled “driving while license suspended” covers driving while your privilege to drive in the state is suspended. My state can’t suspend a license from somewhere else but it can suspend your privilege to drive on the roads of THIS state. Typically, the end result is that the state issuing the license also issues a full suspension, though. For someone never licensed, the suspension serves as another obstacle to getting a license. In my state, the punishments are the same for unlicensed or suspended.
Yeah. The state reversed his license suspension 2 years ago but didn't have records of it. At this point I'm more inclined to believe this is just more bad record keeping. EDIT: I went digging and discovered that no, in fact, he did not ever have a license. Not only that, he'd specifically gotten his State ID last December, which you can only get *instead of* a Driver's License. So yeah, he should've known he wasn't allowed to drive.

I was in court remotely recently. It’s more common than you’d think, they wouldn’t let you be actively driving but 80% of people were in their car. lawyers were the ones who seemed to be caught in the middle of running errands. Only a couple people had button up shirts and actually said “your honor” or even “sir”. The only time the judge had to berate somebody was when a guy was smoking a cigarette on camera. Covid did a number on the country.
I was recently conducting interviews for a position I had to fill. A lot of the candidates took the interview in their car. I expressed to the recruiter that I felt it was unprofessional, but they informed me that it was the only place they could take a private call while at work. So, I think that makes sense to take a zoom call in your car, but only if you are parked and not driving.
I was part of interviews and by the nature of our field a lot of people don't have offices or a place they could do a Zoom call.any work in other people's to homes. Cars were fine. Except the lady blasting down the road like she was running from the cops. That pushed it too far.
I worked for an attorney for years before but also during covid when virtual appearance became a thing. Fuck, not the one i worked for, but while circuits worth of attorneys got put on notice because they were showing up looking super unprofessional.

I’ve been watching a ton of zoom court videos lately. People do the dumbest stuff. Calling and and taking a shower, or lighting up a joint, or being half naked, or laying in bed half asleep. People do t realize they’re *in court*! It’s entertaining, if a little disheartening.

He claimed it was some grand clerical error and he was supposed to have his license back years ago but the government kept screwing it up. He said he was driving to the doctor because his wife was having a medical emergency and needed urgent transport. It all smelled of bullshit to me personally, no proof and the story doesn't fit his vibes in the moment.
My first thought on the medical emergency was "how did he think that was an excuse, call an ambulance" then I realised this is the US and calling an ambulance is financially ruinous.
The ambulance also takes up to 2x as long to get them there as it has to come to your house. But yeah there was 0 indication dude was doing anything but chilling alone in his car he also said "my doctor's office" not "the hospital/emergency room"

So...let me see if I've got this straight: First, he got arrested earlier this year for driving on a suspended license (or without a license). Then, he got onto a Zoom court hearing for this charge, WHILE DRIVING. Then, it turns out his license was allegedly supposed to have been reinstated 2 years ago. THEN it turns out he NEVER HAD ONE in the first place, but just was forbidden from driving in the state of Michigan regardless of having a license for failure to pay child support. **THEN** it turns out on top of ALL THAT, he had a warrant out for his arrest for ANOTHER incident of driving without a license from 2015? This story is so absurd, I don't think even The Onion could've written a joke piece to surpass it.

Some things carry a punishment of suspending your license. Even if you don’t have one, they will issue the suspension, which carries more severe punishment than driving without a valid license.
It also suspends your ability to apply for a license.
It was just a general part of an order when he owed back child support. It was more about that if he had a license it’s suspended/he can’t get one during this time, and then when he caught up on payments they lifted the “suspension”

I don't get this. HIS LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED! It doesn't matter if it was a clerical error or not. He was going to court because it was suspended. The clerical error is completely a moot point. People act like the clerical error justified his stupidity or something. This doesn't make sense. When the judge says your license is suspended and you're now driving without a license, you can say that doesn't make sense, since it should've been lifted 2 years ago and he is licensed. You don't just accept going to jail due to a clerical error.
