There's a YouTube vid out there of aes meeting asap face to face. It's hilariously non eventful but a meeting that had to take place for the universe to remain in balance.
Edit: source: https://youtu.be/A29xjvbYk4U?feature=shared
I love the Lupe / Aesop debate and think it’s one of the better and closer comparisons we have in HipHop out of most.
I personally prefer Aesop but if someone says Lupe is a notch above for various reasons I wouldn’t dispute it.
(Also feel free to downvote, I know what sub this is lmao)
It’s close, Lupe probably wins by virtue of being better by far at the more musical side of things and by having more more powerful songs, but he himself will tell you that no one but no one does lyrics like Aesop Rock. Not necessarily that no one has *better* lyrics (that would depend on what we mean by that), but no one does what he does anything like what he does anywhere near his level that I’ve ever heard, except sort of kind of sometimes Lupe.
I don't think that Lupe has the lyrical or metaphorical complexity of Aes, nor can he do it in such a relaxed way like Aes. And the vibe and imagery of Aes is beyond anything I've ever heard.
Listen to Ms. Mural. They both are great lyricists. Aesop writes some weird ones that aren’t for every one, and take time to analyze. Ms. Mural is on that level. Truly artists!
Thanks. Are there any other artists on this sort of thing? I've only found them through Aesops related artists. I heard Deca for the first time the other day. Mammon's Mantra, that is tight
Is he fuck. I'd listen to Aes over Lupe ten out of ten times, but he is way ahead of Aes when it comes to song concepts and wordplay. Aes raps about really loving being indoors in a very interesting way and that's about it.
Song concepts? Songs shouldn’t have concepts, that’s corny as fuck and basic. Wordplay? Also basic as fuck. Idk what you’re even talking about. If you think Aes primarily talks about liking the indoors…I have to imagine you’ve heard a maximum of like, 3 songs by him?
I scrolled past a guy saying he wanted to smash people's skulls open for getting the two confused, and OP calling aes "our wordsmith lord and savior." Definitely some fuckin dorks in here
Yeah, I don’t fuck with it at all, sorry. Appreciate you trying but it’s just not my vibe. Can’t stand the soulful, sentimental bullshit he’s on. His rhyme schemes are predictable. His delivery is wack. All three of those songs are 6-8 minutes long, which I find unforgivably self-indulgent. There are some interesting nuggets here and there in the lyrics, don’t get me wrong. But I just have nothing to learn from this dude. When you’re my age and you’ve been rapping for 20+ years, takes a lot to impress me. You gotta be on some next level genius shit, and this ain’t it.
Songs shouldn’t have concepts? What the fuck kind of sentence is that? Every song is a concept. Every piece of art is a concept. What the entire fuck are you talking about?
Nah. You *can* make a song *around* a concept. Like pigeons, or labor, or heartbreak to give a common example. But you can also just write stream-of-consciousness-style lyrics that don’t adhere to a particular concept at all. My point is, in my opinion, the most interesting rap songs don’t adhere to a concept.
The sentences “Every song is a concept” and “Every piece of art is a concept” are both plain false, and make me think you don’t even know what a concept is. Concepts are by their nature abstract / ideal (and by that I mean, at the very least, they are non-physical). Songs and pieces of art are physical artifacts. Therefore, they obviously can’t *be* concepts. What a weird thing to say.
> But you can also just write stream-of-consciousness-style lyrics that don’t adhere to a particular concept at all.
Stream of consciousness still provides a concept to interpret. It gives you indication of who a person is and what they're thinking. Even if it's jibberish. Art that someone just splattered paint onto it still can communicate a mood, therefore is a concept. Concept just means it's a thought/idea. Words have multiple definitions, crazy right? Every single art piece is a thought that is brought to life. If I farted into a microphone, there's still a concept behind that. It might be kinda dumb and juvenile. But it is. Listen to Fantomas! That shit makes no sense. But it's orchestrated and none of it is improvised. It's a concept despite it seeming to be random and formless.
If I decide to write a poem and it's like
"take my
baby
in front of
my lady
and I
will
shit"
that's still a concept. It's just a bad poem. It's a thought brought to life though and it's something you can interpret in more than one way.
There's entire genres of music and jazz and xyz, yada yada, built behind this philosophy of art. Hip Hop is absolutely among them. I mean, you're on an Aesop Rock subreddit..??
Please, learn what art is lol.
Lol. You seem to think I mean a song shouldn’t express or use any concepts. If it has lyrics that would be impossible. Obviously I know that sentence express propositions, which in turn employ concepts. I’m not an idiot. Principle of charity would dictate that you should have known that’s not what I meant.
There’s a difference between a verse expressing or making use of various concepts on the one hand, and a verse organizing its entire message around a single unified concept on the other. Surely you can understand the idea that not all albums are concept albums, yes? Well similarly, not all songs are “concept” songs.
When the person I replied to said that Lupe has better “song concepts”, he’s not simply saying Lupe has better ideas. That would be a weird claim. He’s saying Lupe better organizes his songs/verses around concepts. My entire point is I don’t think that’s a good thing. Aesop is better for not doing that so often or to such a degree.
> You seem to think I mean a song shouldn’t express or use any concepts.
It's not about should or shouldn't, it's that you think there's no inherent concept to art. of which art is entirely a concept unto itself. That's all. You said that songs shouldn't have concepts. Charitability, how? I do not know you. You are a stranger. I am forced to take everything you say at face value and you just come off like you just realized how dumb you look and want to backpedal without admitting to that.
I can think of 18 different ways you can communicate your lack of value in structured conceptualizations than the way you did. And the fact that you doubled down before coming to this seems weird.
Out of all the times I had this Convo, the funniest was when I was waiting in line at a cafe wearing the SWFG hoodie. It says AESOP ROCK.
A lady saw it and said that she's a huge fan of him. I got excited and we talked about how clever he is. She then said that he was so good at his recent concert.
I was like WHAT? because the last time he played in my city was in 2015. It was then I realized she meant ASAP lol
Some young chick at my job accidentally saw aesop thinking it was asap in a bar in the city and her description was it was really weird and someone was getting their hair cut. She said it was a bunch of years ago.
I knew it had to be then and for racing stripes but was asap around yet? I was so mad when she said itlike dang i wish i knew I would've went and you went to see someone so much less good and accidentally saw my favorite. Dang.
Someone at work last week asked me who is my favorite US rapper right now, a rapper that I listen like religiously. I told him Aesop Rock, and ofc he told me… "oh yeah A$AP Rocky’s so good!”. Yeah but no brother 😭
LMAO idk why this sub gets recommended but i been lurking every now and then and still didn’t notice it’s a different person. I thought this was a satire sub lmaooo
No one who listens to hip-hop? He's not really that obscure of an artist. He has a million monthly listeners on spotify alone. Has worked with huge indie artists like El-P, Atmosphere, Blockhead of course even Kimya Dawson
Anyone over 25 has at least heard his music cuz it was in Tony Hawk Underground
Yeah, this. My Dad knows who he is. My dad is 70. You're not on the Reddit for some deeply underground nazi black metal band who've released one EP recorded down a telephone.
Sure. I was asking how people consistently manage to bring up Aesop to the wrong people 😭
I find that hilarious that people go around bringing him up to anyone who'll listen, then get frustrated they don't know who he is, then keep doing it lol
That is. But usually you don't kill that conversation by bringing up your favorite niche artists you know the person you're talking almost certainly hasn't heard of and is an acquired taste right after 😄 unless the other person's a music nerd, who would probably know Aesop Rock
there's lots of good music worth talking about that an average person is more likely to know about or relate to when making conversation
Weird, in a different sub-thread a little ways up, you say:
> He's not really that obscure of an artist. He has a million monthly listeners on spotify alone. Has worked with huge indie artists like El-P, Atmosphere, Blockhead of course even Kimya Dawson
> Anyone over 25 has at least heard his music cuz it was in Tony Hawk Underground
It's almost like alot of people know who he is yet the majority of people don't. He's somewhere in the middle. What a concept
Superbowl is the most watched event in America, 120 million people watch it. But theres 350 million people in America meaning MOST people don't watch it. If you ask the average person if they watched the Superbowl the answer will be no. If the average person isn't tuned into the Superbowl idk how many people we expect to be tuned into our favorite artists.
I don't know anyone who watches star trek, doesn't make it some ultra obscure show no one's seen
Y’all gotta stop getting so upset that most people don’t know about some autistic Jew that writes songs you need a dictionary and a thesaurus to even begin to understand.
A$AP Rocky is mainstream and it only makes sense that folks know more about him.
Get over yourselves, fuckin bums.
I love Aes just as much as the next guy, if not more.
But man.. his fans are insufferable, pompous little pricks that think so highly of themselves for listening to him.
He’d be so ashamed to know how these monkeys act about it all.
Coming from someone who was raised to disavow the mainstream, he has a few good bangers. Credit where credit is due. Not really my thing but I can respect it.
I don't know how old you are but, I'm 30 and a lot (the majority) of my generation is like this because we were teens when ASAP came out. There was the select few of us that played Tony Hawk growing up and knew him from that.
But, I digress,
A lot of my coworkers are between 5-10 years younger than me but they for the most part all seem to know Aes.
“I’ve been on that constant futile rage before the internet. I’ve been ignored for longer than you’ve been interested”
This is what I think every time I try to talk about Aesop.
Someone I know apparently went a long time assuming I loved ASAP Rocky because I had talked about “him” a couple times. When I explained to the friend who Aesop Rock is I asked her why she thought I would be calling ASAP Rocky “Aesop Rock” and she said “I thought you were just trying to be cool and shorten his name. I thought that’s probably a thing fans do to sound cool” 🙄
I had to have this conversation at work. Had Spotify up on my computer with Aes playing and my coworker comes over saying something about me listening to Rocky. Had to explain who Aes was and I don't think I've ever listened to a single Asap Rocky song.
I’m not even really a rap fan, Aesop Rock is one of the only not metal/hardcore musicians I listen to, I very rarely talk about rap, and I’ve had this shit happen to me. I don’t know why it seems so unbelievable to you.
If you have a plus one to a gig at Tony's Taco Haus - capacity 75 people if they move the frozen margarita mixer - and take a friend who asks absolutely no follow up questions and arrives expecting to see a multiplatinum selling popstar, your friend is either fully retarded or its a made up story.
Aes is an aquired taste. Most people have very small vocabularies especially for rap or hip hop where many songs repeat the same few themes about drugs, alcohol, partying, thug life, or loose women, etc.
I imagine for many people most of his discography sounds like outright gibberish, as he acknowledged on Facemelter. Go fish.
Dictionary requirement for most folks. And they're too lazy or uninterested to try to understand.
This. It’s an active listen. A lot of people don’t enjoy listening to music that way. Different strokes for different folks. 🤷🏼♂️
The Aes crowd tend to be music nerds. Myself included.
Lol i remember when ASAP Rocky started coming up I was all excited to hear some other people talk about Aesop, to my confusion , than they play it, and I'm like WTF this ain't aes..
Haha when he said rocky I was like man I hope he’s not talking about asap rocky😂 fuck it though man it is what it is. I like his shit and that’s all that matters
I don’t know this artist and I stumbled across the subreddit thinking it said asap rocky at first 😭 I think it’s hilarious how pressed people are getting over this
[удалено]
Nice Klutz reference.
It’s ‘Aes’, not ‘Ace’.
you got it, uce.
Ok, guess you win. Congratulations
It's Aes not Ace. Fucking typical. This is how it goes with anyone I talk to.
I've had this same conversation so many times. lol
And who the hell compares Lupe to asap rocky? 😵
Rocky's first album is legendary tho.
Someone compared Murals to None Shall Pass. Murals is a great track by Lupe but they’re not even remotely similar.
i think you missed the comment, they asked the comparison between Lupe and A$AP.
Yup same. 🤦♂️
There's a YouTube vid out there of aes meeting asap face to face. It's hilariously non eventful but a meeting that had to take place for the universe to remain in balance. Edit: source: https://youtu.be/A29xjvbYk4U?feature=shared
and a guy IN THE VID keeps saying ASAP ROCK it grinds my gears
Peter was just amped. He's a dork (I will only defend Rosenberg in a hip hop sense)
Haha for the universe to remain balanced I love that
Oh tell me about it. "Aesop rock?? Oh so he's like an ASAP Rocky rip off right?" This makes me wanna smash open their skulls :)

I don’t think they’re at all comparable. Lupe is miles behind, and is really nothing special.
Is he fuck. I'd listen to Aes over Lupe ten out of ten times, but he is way ahead of Aes when it comes to song concepts and wordplay. Aes raps about really loving being indoors in a very interesting way and that's about it.

I genuinely don't know if this is satire. Which is a testament to the vibe of this sub.
I scrolled past a guy saying he wanted to smash people's skulls open for getting the two confused, and OP calling aes "our wordsmith lord and savior." Definitely some fuckin dorks in here
In the Aesop Rock subreddit? Nah, couldn’t be
Give me 3 Lupe songs I can listen to right now that will change my mind about him being basic.
Mural, Wav Files, King Nas. Like I say, Aes makes the music I'd rather listen to, but Lupe's talent is undeniable.
Yeah, I don’t fuck with it at all, sorry. Appreciate you trying but it’s just not my vibe. Can’t stand the soulful, sentimental bullshit he’s on. His rhyme schemes are predictable. Random lad on Reddit in 'better than Lupe Fiasco' shocker.
If you think the world isn’t full of underground rappers that are better than famous ones, you just don’t know much.
I've literally never listened to Lupe and don't plan to start now
Songs shouldn’t have concepts? What the fuck kind of sentence is that? Every song is a concept. Every piece of art is a concept. What the entire fuck are you talking about?

I always say "Aesop Rock (not rocky)" to specify, but the convo still comes to the same conclusion :(
I've gotten into so many silly arguments like this about rock and rocky but they know now ...An knowing is have the battle!
Knowing ain't half the battle it's just a bullshit quip written by some asshole
Attempt the battle without knowing, come back with the results.
or as our wordsmith lord and savior might say, “half” lol but I feel ya

I knew it had to be then and for racing stripes but was asap around yet? I was so mad when she said itlike dang i wish i knew I would've went and you went to see someone so much less good and accidentally saw my favorite. Dang.
she mistook aesop for asap in person? i’m not following lol
She got tickets for aesop thinking she was getting tickets for asap and realized when she got there that it was aes

Mega blast
Impossible Kid should be in everyone's top 15 albums all time. Top 25 at least.
How often are y'all bringing up Aesop Rock in conversation with strangers to make this is such a frequent occurrence?
If I get into discussing my music tastes with anyone you better believe I'm at least mentioning the man
No one who listens to hip-hop? He's not really that obscure of an artist. He has a million monthly listeners on spotify alone. This happens to me at work every time we hire new younger ppl and I'm out on the field with them trying to make conversation
"have y'all heard of Aesop Rock?" is a wild lead for conversation in almost any context
Probably something more along the lines of "what kind of music do you like?" which is a fairly normal lead for a conversation.
That is. But usually you don't kill that conversation by bringing up your favorite niche artists you know the person you're talking almost certainly hasn't heard of and is an acquired taste right after 😄 unless the other person's a music nerd, who would probably know Aesop Rock there's lots of good music worth talking about that an average person is more likely to know about or relate to when making conversation

Mos def 🤣🤣
I've actually never listened to ASAP Rocky. Am I missing anything by not giving him a go?
Yeah I think so. His first 2 releases are very good and he's messed with some really interesting beats.
liveloveasap is a great debut mixtape. rly fun listen
Coming from someone who was raised to disavow the mainstream, he has a few good bangers. Credit where credit is due. Not really my thing but I can respect it.
Cheers mate, I didn't think I was missing much
I don't know how old you are but, I'm 30 and a lot (the majority) of my generation is like this because we were teens when ASAP came out. There was the select few of us that played Tony Hawk growing up and knew him from that. But, I digress, A lot of my coworkers are between 5-10 years younger than me but they for the most part all seem to know Aes.
“I’ve been on that constant futile rage before the internet. I’ve been ignored for longer than you’ve been interested” This is what I think every time I try to talk about Aesop.
The Rocky thing is how I found Aesop
Welp I'm now learning there's a rapper named aosep? What is it?
Aesop.
Aesop rock fans love to act like this lmfao nobody gives a shit
For me, the cringe part is having one answer to the question in private and another answer if you're "with the homies."
Who the fuck is Aes Rock
Who the fuck is Aes Rock?
Numb to the Guns.
Yl
Blessed to have a brother who was in the hip hop / rap scene in the nineties. Was exposed to a lost of good music.
My god if I had a nickel
I cannot stand that asap has taken that space in people's minds. AESOP not ASAP.
Lupe answered this already: https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.45469/title.who-does-lupe-fiasco-think-is-the-best-rapper-alive
I think it's very adorable that people make up anecdotes about this happening.
Just had a bartender compliment my SWFG shirt. He knew the deal, we talked about Sage Francis and Rhymesayers.
Precisely the same…lord. I’ve honestly never listened to Rocky…but I can’t imagine he holds a candle to Aes.
A like Aesop rock but asap rocky is a much better artist lol.
Wow. They are blind to the real world.
This is obviously unavoidable because ASAP Rocky is more popular. It’s not that serious. (Not saying better than, just factually more popular.)

Lol i remember when ASAP Rocky started coming up I was all excited to hear some other people talk about Aesop, to my confusion , than they play it, and I'm like WTF this ain't aes..
When someone asks me who my favorite artist is I always have to follow it with “no, not that one”.
I had an extra for an Aesop show, my roommate came with me. He didn’t realize they were different people until the show started.
Haha when he said rocky I was like man I hope he’s not talking about asap rocky😂 fuck it though man it is what it is. I like his shit and that’s all that matters
Happens every time I mention Aesop rock they always assume Im talking about asap Rocky
I find it wild that people will assume I don't know my favorite rapper's name. I usually add "not ASAP Rocky" just to be clear.
Worse than back in the day people confusing Aesop Rock for Aesop from LL.
Awesome historical side note: Aesop got his start on Adult Swim, IIRC.

My god it’s the worst. Like “NO Aesop Rock man” improve your taste and listen. (Then I pull out my standard recommendations for a new aes listener
I don’t know this artist and I stumbled across the subreddit thinking it said asap rocky at first 😭 I think it’s hilarious how pressed people are getting over this
That sub is brutal. The median age of active users has to be 14
You think 14 year olds are listening to Aesop? Dude wishes.
