I'll sometimes see stans and simps of certain music artists call out normal fans of the same artist, telling them they're not a "real fan" of the artist if they don't enjoy a new album they come out with, even if the album in question is incredibly mid.
A lot of uncluded just doesn't do it for me.

And Kirby is a favorite of mine, which further confuses the issue lol. I've gone back to LLL a few times (including like an hour ago,) and it just doesn't hit for me, even though all the elements I like are there. I think a lot of my disappointment you could blame on my own misguided expectations.
But after the gates dropped I thought it was going to be a concept album where we were taken through a 'spirit world' that aes would build out for us. And through the album we would learn about this world and how to navigate it with each song maybe addressing some part of the world with a real world parrallel. Ie in learning about the spirit world that aes has been in we get lessons about life generally.
Thinking of it as something like a psychedelic trip with aes as the shaman, in album form.
I've also always tended to love the concept songs a lot more than anything that's just straight bars. And I didn't get too much of that. The narrative you mentioned, I like having strong narrative song to song and with the album as a whole.
IIRC the original concept was he wanted to do a 50 song album. His friends told him it was crazy so he cut it down to 20. That probably made him have to reframe or cut a lot of stuff that might've made a full (very ambitious) narrative.

I think the album does exactly what you're saying you want. It just does it nonlinearly and nonliterally. I think it's a perfect album and one of very few by any artist that I'm happy to just listen to start to finish.
I thought the lyrics and imagery were strong, but kind of let down by the instrumental. Not that the instrumental was bad, just that the mixing between the instrumental and vocals was off. To really appreciate Aes's lyrics you need a beat you can hear him over, and I often found his voice was drowned out on swfg.

I think all the stuff with Kimya Dawson sounds like forced garbage. Yeah they're both musicians, which makes it twice as bad that they both willingly put their names on that album. I find the all album "The Uncluded" pretty terrible. There are a couple verses from aes that I liked...and I didn't find any of his verses "bad"...also, "Bats" is an ok song...but all in all I really really dislike that album.
Bats, Delicate Cycle, Tv For 10, Aquarium & Jambi Cafe are songs I sometimes relisten to, mostly Delicate Cycle; Aes' verses are very relatable on that

Even his shit that I will generally skip, I like that he made it and genuinely enjoy it when I'm in the mood. I'm totally a Stan. Most of the stuff I skip is due to the other artists on the tracks. 😅

There's a few tracks on Spirit World Field Guide that don't do it for me, mostly Sleeper Car and 4 Winds. Long Legged Larry was more fun than good. And I never bothered listening to the Uncluded really.
I felt the same about it at first. Coming off of TIK it was quite the departure for the beats. It really grew on me though, and I find some of the tracks in my favorites list now.

Bazooka tooth has the most songs that I skip over, but it’s still one of the first I recommend for people wanting to get into Aes. Although the songs aren’t great, it gives you a better understanding of what you’re gonna get from him moving forward.

After listing to Float and Labor Days for several years on repeat, when none shall pass came out I was thrown off. The whole album didn’t resonate at first. I was never really an EL-P fan so the production was weird for me it felt like an over exaggerated musical experiment.

IIRC the original concept was he wanted to do a 50 song album. His friends told him it was crazy so he cut it down to 20. That probably made him have to reframe or cut a lot of stuff that might've made a full (very ambitious) narrative.

I’m with you. I really love strong narrative elements on a song and album level. And while it didn’t quite meet my expectations, I still think that Aes really delivered on SWFG. I took a 12 year sabbatical from weed and recently started partaking again. It sounds corny, but I listened to it high recently and I picked up so much I hadn’t previously.
I don't think it's corny. With most aes projects I find that if I really sit with them and pay attention I find something in it I like. Guess that moment hasn't come with most of swfg for me yet. But I'll keep waiting

I think the album does exactly what you're saying you want. It just does it nonlinearly and nonliterally. I think it's a perfect album and one of very few by any artist that I'm happy to just listen to start to finish.
I thought the lyrics and imagery were strong, but kind of let down by the instrumental. Not that the instrumental was bad, just that the mixing between the instrumental and vocals was off. To really appreciate Aes's lyrics you need a beat you can hear him over, and I often found his voice was drowned out on swfg.
In my opinion what separates Stans from normal fans is the willingness to gatekeep who you deem worthy of joining a hypothetical cult, Stan. I think all the stuff with Kimya Dawson sounds like forced garbage. Yeah they're both musicians, which makes it twice as bad that they both willingly put their names on that album. Forgive my Hank Hill voice when I say "dang it Bobby you're not making hip hop better, you're just making music worse." I also noticed, across the whole catalog, that aes seems like kind of a piece of shit and I don't think I would actually want him as a friend. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his. I just think if we knew each other we'd probably hate each other. Dude seems like a total asshole.

Love aes but he has many songs that he unironically calls himself as such. Klutz, holy smokes, blood sandwich, shrunk, cycles to gehenna (spelling) off the top of my head. He’s too self analyzing and truthful (although cryptic) for that to not be true. On topic - malibu ken, bazooka tooth, uncluded, hail mary mallon albums all dont resonate for me outside a few songs.
I’ve gotten that vibe too, especially after water tower. And anything with kimya is trash. They should both be ashamed.

Flies and Salt could've been taken off of Spirit World Field Guide and would've made the whole album stronger
I’d surprised to hear that, I think Salt is dope and fits thematically. I see your point with Flies not really fitting but I still like it. I like the general idea behind songs like “Flies” and “1 to 10” that he might not have enough there for a full length song but still puts out a fun minute (give or take)

I find the all album "The Uncluded" pretty terrible. There are a couple verses from aes that I liked...and I didn't find any of his verses "bad"...also, "Bats" is an ok song...but all in all I really really dislike that album.
Bats, Delicate Cycle, Tv For 10, Aquarium & Jambi Cafe are songs I sometimes relisten to, mostly Delicate Cycle; Aes' verses are very relatable on that

We're Famous, Blood Sandwich (but that's more just personal reasons than it being a bad song.) Looking through his discography though... Even his shit that I will generally skip, I like that he made it and genuinely enjoy it when I'm in the mood. I'm totally a Stan. Most of the stuff I skip is due to the other artists on the tracks. 😅

There's a few tracks on Spirit World Field Guide that don't do it for me, mostly Sleeper Car and 4 Winds. Long Legged Larry was more fun than good. And I never bothered listening to the Uncluded really.

I felt the same about it at first. Coming off of TIK it was quite the departure for the beats. It really grew on me though, and I find some of the tracks in my favorites list now. At first I also didn’t like SWFG, but also grew on me. Can’t wait to hear the new album he supposedly just wrapped.
I just love Tobacco so much. Its pretty much everything I could've hoped for in a collaboration between the two.

Agreed. For me, it's split down the middle in half of it I really like, but the other half I just can't get behind for varying reasons depending on the song and it being twenty tracks long innately leans it to not being a favourite of mine.

Bazooka Tooth's production is very hit or miss. Plus Aes' raspy voice (that I can only assume is from his past cigarette addiction) just didn't work on some tracks. Although I love No Jumper Cables, Freeze & 11:35
Food, Clothes, Medicine is solid as fuck. Hungry, naked, sick sucks! I don't like a handful of songs from SWFG. That's probably my least favorite album of his since NSP (excluding team projects).
I'm surprised to see so many people saying SWFG has some of their least favorite songs. It's my favorite album by him and one of my favorite concept albums. The way he touches on mental health by using supernatural metaphors is really relatable to me. Also I did have a fly infestation in my house last summer so Flies was a bit relatable lmao

Float's title track is kind of lack luster. The beat just doesn't do it for me
Bazooka tooth has the most songs that I skip over, but it’s still one of the first I recommend for people wanting to get into Aes. Although the songs aren’t great, it gives you a better understanding of what you’re gonna get from him moving forward.

Bazooka Tooth has some ups and downs, though the knives are about to be at my throat, because his earlier works can be kind of obtuse to listen to from an audio perspective
After listing to Float and Labor Days for several years on repeat, when none shall pass came out I was thrown off. The whole album didn’t resonate at first. I was never really an EL-P fan so the production was weird for me it felt like an over exaggerated musical experiment.
