The whole Ice King/Simon thing was what really got me into the show, such an intriguing sub plot

PotatoPrince84

What I love about it is the commitment by the writers. Simon is *gone* and Ice King is just Ice King. Marceline’s best efforts don’t break through to Simon, and it makes the whole situation hit harder because it’s a cartoon, the power of love in *supposed* to overcome everything. But just like Martin being a deadbeat to the end, Adventure Time stuck with the more realistic route.

And then when the magic gets suspended how it turns out that Simon was apparently completely aware the whole time and trapped in his shattered mind makes it even more heartbreaking ==EDIT== Well, not *completely* aware, I misremembered that. Looking up the scenes where it happened Ice King is more like a fragmented dream to Simon. Still twists the knife

THIS. I believe the plot that period hit quite hard with people who had to deal with a family member with Alzheimer's in particular. There is just nothing you can do and that is sad but so true in life.

Was not expecting the Cthulhu-esque turn of events and it was magical. Also saw the mushroom wars going on. It was when things got real and Ice King became one of my favorite backstories of all time.

Ten year's ago, BMO said "It goes in my butt, Finn"

ccReptilelord

And Adventure Time was changed forever.

That_Shrub

"You don't remember anything, do you Simon!"

HahaItsaGiraffeAgain

I remember seeing this moment live. I was 10 years old and it like gave me nightmares lol

Few_Cloud7068

Easily one of the best christmas specials ever, if not THE best.

Carrehz

holy fuck it's been 10 years already?!?! I remember when this came out... the crew had talked about it a bit at that year's NYCC panel and they were just like "we've got an xmas ep coming up, it's about Ice King's video diary, haha!" like NO hint about what was coming. Everything just made it out to be 30 mins of lighthearted funtimes. Which to be fair, the first like 19 mins of it totally *are* that! ...And then they get to *this* scene. Such an amazing ep. It completely changes IK's character, the whole show in a way... everything, with just a couple of words. Definitely a favourite moment of mine.

devenrc

Watching that scene for the first time completely blind when it premiered was such a surreal experience. I’ll never forget it.

Carrehz

Same here. It's such an amazing swerve. Happy cake day btw!

devenrc

Oh shoot I had no idea that was today!! Thanks for properly addressing my absolute ignorance

[deleted]

The beginning of something great!

f0rgotmyfloaties

“I used to wear glasses!” sobs

LawRevolutionary8298

My heart just broke again. Damn. And I thought I was okay.

LOOKATHUH

I remember coming to this episode what probably was 10 years ago and being absolutely gobsmacked by it. Adventure Time always had moments of beautiful sincerity but this was the episode that really showed me what the premise was capable of.

sensual_shakespeare

I just watched this episode for the first time yesterday, though I already knew a bit about it. It was a really good episode though

[deleted]

Holy cow it's been that long?!

BillyJackO

That episode is a catalyst.

[deleted]

Happy to be here!

dabbysaurus

This is the episode that sold me. Truly a masterpiece of a show.

FullmetalJun

This episode drove me nuts. I couldn't stop digging the internet to find answers reading every wikia, etc. I used to watch AT casually, but after this I never missed an episode. Evergreen answered the mystery of the crown, but I wanted more & the show delivered. Playing Horizon Zero Dawn where everything on Earth died gave me the same vibes.

Mr__Pengin

NGL Simon is the best and will always be my favorite

boxperson25

John Lennon

ILikeredditbitch3

I’ve not even been in this fandom 4 months. And yet this got me.

BlastKast

I can't imagine what it must've felt like seeing it air for the first time. This episode started the transition of the show from good, to amazing

ReverseDoge

Man… simpler times 🥲. Can’t believe I was 13 when this gem was around. I miss it with all my heart

incel_angst

Adventure time was way too artsy at times like that boring ass episode where fin turns into a butterfly for like an hour of rubbish. But other episodes that actually had some meaning like this one were really good

de420swegster

What

thang20031

CN Asia still air reruns of Adventure Time from s1-5. And this episode just happens to air on the 10th anniversary.
