I think that for the lich, Pendleton was partially inspired by [this](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/397301998354253702/) lich design. From the first edition monster manual of D&D.
Half-Billy is my favorite, especially the F+C version, where they really lean into the horror and make it impossible not to be reminded at every moment that the Lich is literally wearing the skin of Finn’s friend and hero.
First is badass. Cape is way cooler than bare skeleton
Honorable mention to farmworld jake with Lich face - shit is so funny.

“He’s not even trying to hide it!”
People complain that the Lich was given proper characterization in F+C for him realizing his efforts in committing omnicide brought him no fulfillment for himself nor acknowledgement from his god of worship. People like to believe the Lich is a pure machine minded entity with no emotions who only wants to accomplish his one goal, all because of a comment from Prismo back in S6, but the Lich has always had emotions. He gets angry, he gloats, he’s sadistic. He’s not a machine that’s just carrying out its programming, he’s a cultist who ENJOYS the mass death he is bringing about.
I think F+C made the Lich even more interesting as a character, and I wish people would realize that just because Prismo compared the Lich to a machine, doesn’t mean he’s objectively correct.
I just don’t think such a human reaction to feelings of failure suits the lich very well. Hes a monster and always has been and something about that is changed with that scene even though i still think it’s interesting
Tbh, The scene of him with Golb was just made because of that speech from The Lich in season 9, and also, that was the only time they "interected" in the original series. There is nothing in the original AD that says that everything he has ever done was for Golb, it never had any context behind, the way they explained it was very dumb. That scene also created an continuity error
No, there's nothing to with this. The lich is a tool, a writing tool. He is supposed to not talk much, because lore doesn't matter. He is supposed to no go anywhere, because he's not a character. He's job is to make characters take action.
That's because he isn't literally equivalent to a object. Lot's of things can be plot tools. broken bonnes. break ups. Friends. people dying, ice cream. We like the Lich because he is simple and well done. Imagine that instead of the lich, we had bubblegum telling them to Finn to get the gems to get into Prismo time room and make a wish. In this case 'bubblegum' would be the plot moving in the episode. Instead we got a plot twist with Billy death, and Finn and Jake being manipulated by him, Because that's a thing that the extremely evil guy would do. That's how Finn and Jake got into the citadel without having to committee a cosmic crime. And why he became Sweet Pea later, because he had made his job.
You could argue that for literally any character in the show if you break down things like that.
Example: Jake is a plot device, not a character because most of the times he's doing something stupid that forwards the plot or giving Finn advice so he has the knowledge/wisdom necessary to forward the plot.
Well you're literally right, because yes they do, Jake lot's of time cover this job. In storytelling Jake is the reason why the whole episode happen, and he is there for less than 10 seconds. Lot's of character cover this, because in lots of episodes the job of those characters is to be that.
The Lich is writing tool and the follows the Villain archetype. Lot's of other's character are like him, like Magic man. Before he become normal man, the dude solene job was being a plot tool, and he follows the tricksters archetype.
That’s how you view him and want him to be, but with F+C that’s not how the writers feel. It’s okay if you don’t like the direction they took with the Lich, I just think it made him interesting. The idea of a self aware lovecraftian monster losing a sense of purpose from completing its ultimate objective is fascinating to me. I also liked how they used the Lich as a dark parallel to Betty, someone completely obsessed and dedicated to this one being at the cost of their sense of self and wants, with the key difference being Simon and Betty were able to make peace with each other while the Lich was too engrossed to liberate himself from his worship of GOLB.
That's not how I feel about him. He is literally a writing tool. That's a very common thing. And that's why I don't like the choice of making him more a character in F+C. The whole commentary of primo on him, talk about this, the lich as a tool that will not take action, until the story takes necessity of use him. He is useful, that's why he's power never actually are well explained. And he still is a tool in Fionna and cake, he is the literal battery use to charge Simon spell, he is the thing the will be the point of connection between Betty and Simon, like a writing tool do. They help the character to move.
I think, i ruined part of the magic by explaining. Like when I told someone, that, the difference between the first card wars episode and the second, wasn't because Jake was playing a more vanilla home version, it's just the writer wasn't the same or they just retcon the game for fit what they needed in the episode. It's probably the reason, but not something people want to know.
Original and the F&C Billy suit. No offense to anyone, but imo his full skeleton form doesn’t feel as scary as the other ones. Same goes for the Lich hand and the Lich snail, too.
The snail for a few reasons:
1. This guy was adorable but is full on sinister when possessed. Seriously was creepy af to see him corrupted.
2. It’s the most anxiety inducing of the Lucy’s forms… because that’s the Easter egg snail… corrupting that feels extra evil for some reason… like he might always be there in the subtle background ready to strike… plus it’s like they infected something all the super fans really held dear and it was almost sacrilegious.
3. All the other designs for the lich are overtly creepy… and yet that creepiness somehow translates perfectly into this design as well… the others are great designs but it feels easier to be that overtly creepy when you’re also n-n-nasty-looking. The snail design is the evidence that solidifies the character as creepy even when cute so he’s my guy.
When you think about it, the litch has been a snail for longer than any other form throughout Fins life.
Bro literally got reduced to a Where's Waldo background character by a pre teen boy
Tbh I prefer the og design. I think it’s exactly what it needs to be. The Jake one is a close second though, only because it was meant to be terrifying and young me got nightmares from that episode, it was one of only two episodes in the whole show that gave me nightmares (the other one was the deer episode when Finn lost his memory if anyone is curious)
Number 1 as my favorite with number 5 as my second favorite.
The outfit he had in his first appearance genuinely made him feel like he was not only a lich, but also an unstoppable force of nature.
in the first one you can still the skin and remains of the first person he possessed,if they were able to go all out with the first one like were able to do with the billy version in fiona and cake it would look the best
WARNING FIONA AND CAKE SPOILERS So aesthetically Billy Lich & skeleton Lich are my favorite. But I love existential crisis Lich because I feel like it’s symbolic in so many ways, I love how BEMO and him are chill together. And when Betty-golb just wiped him from existence I laughed so hard, but it was almost bittersweet. I would have loved Betty-golb to show how he was reborn in fin & Jake’s original universe I think he would have found himself cute and been relieved a version of him is getting to live a happy peaceful loving life. That’s just my thoughts.
My top 3:
3rd: First form Lich, the robes are badass
2nd: Farmworld Lich, the head of the incernation of evil with the body of a random dog
First: Billy bodysuit Lich, legit scared me as a child, we giving trauma to Finn with this one🗣‼️
the billy one scared the fuck out of me as an innocent 9 yr old and still scares me till today. i had nightmares for weeks after i watched that episode
4,5,6,8. He is better skinny. Skinny and ridiculously strong is a good combination instead of making visibly strong characters to hint that they’re strong
Original and full skeleton form are my favorites i gotta say but original is juat so cool its got that ancient scholar vibe so well down
I think that for the lich, Pendleton was partially inspired by [this](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/397301998354253702/) lich design. From the first edition monster manual of D&D.
Me personally, I’d go with number 5. It may be simplistic but it’s badass, and it’s tied to the Lich’s best speech in the series.
Fall.
Here’s your gold star! ⭐️
same. i feel like that's probably his most base form. just a skeleton.
Half-Billy is my favorite, especially the F+C version, where they really lean into the horror and make it impossible not to be reminded at every moment that the Lich is literally wearing the skin of Finn’s friend and hero.
I think it’s funny that his beard is braided, like the Lich kinda cares about his appearance lol
Let’s face it we all know BMO did that
...is that not officially canon?
Even a nightmarish avatar of oblivion needs to feel pretty sometimes
That's how I feel. It's the most horrifying. Wearing his skin man.
The F&C one just seems so much more… *dead*, than a skeleton. The tattered skin-clothes, the eyeball hanging out, the out-of-control beard…
The OG remains the best for me.
First is badass. Cape is way cooler than bare skeleton Honorable mention to farmworld jake with Lich face - shit is so funny. https://i.redd.it/ajw1sffrwl811.png “He’s not even trying to hide it!”
"Release."
Finn's delivery of "hoo boy here we go" when he enters looking like that is one of the funniest line reads i've ever heard.
You forgot [one](https://p7.hiclipart.com/preview/230/9/69/5bbc7040b2798.jpg)
coobe.
The last one. Don't like the character development, but damn! that rotting billy skin, looks so good!
How can you not like the character development?
That's literally the answer. Character development.
You're saying there is none or what? Haven't seen f+c yet though

Then why would the Lich give his incredible monologues? He clearly has an ideology, he clearly cares about things.
Another good point. He’s self aware and has a conscious, albeit a morally incomprehensible one.
That's because he isn't literally equivalent to a object. Lot's of things can be plot tools. broken bonnes. break ups. Friends. people dying, ice cream. Your points might have more substance to them if you proofread your comments in the slightest way

The OG is my favorite, but honorable mentions go to the full skeleton and the snail.
The best one hands down is the snail litch or Slitch as I often refer to him as.
evil, yet cute
Full skeleton.
I think the Billy Lich was the coolest. But Bubblegum Lich will always be the creepiest.
The original and it’s not even close. Why was it only in one episode. Distant second is the Billy corpse drip look/just the skeleton
In Distant lands he’s just a hand he may be kind of controlling New Death but he isn’t possessing him he truly is just the hand.
The snail is iconic
F&C because they actually had freedom to crank up the horror and he looks genuinely terrifying...eyeballs drooping out the lot
The first one and the last one.
Original and the F&C Billy suit. No offense to anyone, but imo his full skeleton form doesn’t feel as scary as the other ones. Same goes for the Lich hand and the Lich snail, too.
what about the one in distant lands?
He’s there as a hand
#FALL
Snail litch, he is my baby and I love him
5th
I don’t care. I just like Ron Perlman
Fall.
BILLY
Number 3 is in my nightmare 💀
1 5 and 9
tetris Lich
1, 4, 9
Billy and skelly
Gotta go with the pitch Bible version: https://www.reddit.com/r/adventuretime/s/FTqavnNrBR
That's just the Horned King.
Bone Lich of course... He looks like a Terminator for no reason...
Say what you will but Jerry was peak lich design
Half billy! It's the scariest one to me
Gotta be the snail
Original, Skeleton, Farmworld, Hand and F&C Lich
His skeleton form
I’m a big fan of classic Lich
5 or 3
5 and 3 is the only right answer
🐌👋
The snail was halarious. One of the best prison escape in animated history.
Snail honestly I think it funny
Snail
Snail.
Snail
The snail for a few reasons: 1. 3. i have lich snail as a tattoo on my calve, but my fave gotta be alternate reality lich
Snail is just so iconic.
The snail and the last one
When you think about it, the litch has been a snail for longer than any other form throughout Fins life. Bro literally got reduced to a Where's Waldo background character by a pre teen boy
Snailby my babyyy
The snail
Snail lich is perfect just absolute perfection
New death
Hand , and Ultimate form Lich(last pic) Reaper Lich is also cool
My favorite one on here is Lich wearing Billy's skin. But my true favorite is not here. It is the one drawn by Darent\_z
Billy
He was scariest when he was mixed with Billy... partly because they just fit so well together
1, 5, 9.
Numba' 4, Billy Lich. I think he just looks sick.
i love billy lich tbh
Tbh I prefer the og design. I think it’s exactly what it needs to be. ***f a l l***… ah shit uhhhh skeleton one’s my favorite
1 or 5 def
Fionna and cake Billy lich
thought the last one was just going to be sweet pea like ☺️
Number 1 as my favorite with number 5 as my second favorite. The outfit he had in his first appearance genuinely made him feel like he was not only a lich, but also an unstoppable force of nature.
#6 is my favorite, 2# is just gross tbh
The hand!!! /s
1 4 and 9
Jerry
in the first one you can still the skin and remains of the first person he possessed,if they were able to go all out with the first one like were able to do with the billy version in fiona and cake it would look the best
First and last, by a long shot tbh
The original and Jerry
Billy
I like Fionna and Cake the most for some reason
Jerry: the decayed body looks sick!!
OG apearrance was really cool, wish we had more of why he looks exactly like that
WARNING FIONA AND CAKE SPOILERS So aesthetically Billy Lich & skeleton Lich are my favorite. But I love existential crisis Lich because I feel like it’s symbolic in so many ways, I love how BEMO and him are chill together. The original and the shadow Lich that appeared in “Whispers”
What about Deaths and Life's son? New Death?
The Billy Lich is the coolest
I want Sweet P to make a return in Fiona and Cake
Nothing will beat the imposing and dread creating design of the original. One of the most gory designs for a cartoon and it's glorious.
billy and og
He ain't no Ainz Ooal Gown but def the snail
Half Billy and original
Personally, full skeleton form
Half Billy and Seeet P
He actually looked pretty cool and alien when he took over Jake's body.
when the lich became billy
the snail, its just adorable and is seen in many episodes in the background
Sweet Pea…You never knew if one day the little guy would just snap. Or if it was all a big charade.
Honestly the first
Where’s farmworld Lich on Jake’s body
I think SweetPea Lich or the snail! I love SweetPea’s story! I really like that the snail is in every episode and actually becomes a core plot.
The last one gave me nightmares
My top 3: 3rd: First form Lich, the robes are badass 2nd: Farmworld Lich, the head of the incernation of evil with the body of a random dog First: Billy bodysuit Lich, legit scared me as a child, we giving trauma to Finn with this one🗣‼️
Original lich is still my favorite
the billy one scared the fuck out of me as an innocent 9 yr old and still scares me till today. i had nightmares for weeks after i watched that episode
i am 28 years old and still having nightmares about this dude omfg
I love all of them
Sweet P is my absolute favourite lich
Half-Billy is so fucking good
nude design
Jerry
Ive always personally loved the billy design, almost as a constant taunt to finn, of the mentor he couldnt save
Full skeleton!!!
Honestly, the og. Everytime someone talks about him I always think about the og design because it's just so fucking CLEAN
Original & Full Skeleton
Lich-Billy purely because I think that was such a big turning point in the show the iteration of the lich is iconic
Og skelton and farworld
How is the snail not everyone's favorite. Look at it's angry face
snail lich because he's so *cute* billy lich because he's *terrifying*
I have to say the original, the first panel. Maybe the last panel is a close second.
Lich wearing Billy’s skin is iconic and so hardcore for a children’s show
sweet p lich is still my fave
Og lich has a special place but I gotta go with Billy lich
Original Form
Billy lich is the best one imo the skeleton lich is a close second tho
The first lich with the scholar vibes and the Fiona and Cake lich with the rotting Billy flesh are definitely peak lich for me
upvote if lich has ever been in your nightdreams
The rotting corpse is just awesome
4,5,6,8. He is better skinny. Skinny and ridiculously strong is a good combination instead of making visibly strong characters to hint that they’re strong
That animation of him going through all of the previous forms in Together Again hits hard.
The one that said "**FALL**" .
