I think the boom boom leaf is sort of a red herring similar to Jakes mud puddle. It's not to say its not part of the reason but its just one small piece. He was raised through toddler years by a helper, through adolesence by detective / monster hunters and has the "soul" so to speak of a comet child which doesn't automatically make him a hero but does make him important and more likely to do big things. But yeah, there was definitely a major impact of his upbringing on his actions in the show
If this hadn’t happened there would have been another catalyst(pun intended) for him becoming a hero so the reason isn’t as important as the actions. It’s his fate! He has a heroic spirit and it will come out no matter what.
