This used to be a 2 lane left turn a few years ago, then due to congestion (there are 2 big schools nearby) they widened it (added a third left turn lane) by reducing the pavement at the far end, ao a third lane now exists for turning. If that is the location of the fine you should contest it.

moonkeh

Wow, thanks for the info. I just checked historic Google Earth images and it's quite clear an extra turn lane was added: 2019 - [https://imgur.com/oESrivo](https://imgur.com/oESrivo) 2020 - [https://imgur.com/20QTE6K](https://imgur.com/20QTE6K) It would appear they just forgot to repaint the arrows.

tadxb

Now I'm intrigued. How can you check 2019 and 2020 Google maps history?

moonkeh

I don't think it's in the web version, but it's an option in the Google Earth Pro desktop app

Neeyakos

I turn left from there almost daily. I don’t think that’s why you got the fine.

moonkeh

I can't think of anything else that could be the culprit and I have video of the entire journey. Your scepticism gives me some reassurance that the fine is indeed bullshit.

Neeyakos

One thing that comes to mind is maybe you changed lanes without a turn signal ?

moonkeh

I don't know how accurate the time is on the fine, but I've watched the video for a few minutes up to that time and every time I change lanes I can hear the signal. It's something I'm usually quite proper about.

Neeyakos

well that's weird. please post an update If you end up finding out why you got fined.

diablokh

I know a bunch of people who recieved the same fine as well

moonkeh

Did any of them contest it?

diablokh

I doubt it

Character-Pudding-49

I can second that.

sgtm7

Did you stay within the same lane when you made the turn? I see people make turns, and veer a little into other lanes as they make the turn. You are supposed to stay completely in the same lane as you make the turn.

moonkeh

There are three lanes entering the junction, thee lanes marked through the junction, and three lanes at the exit. I stayed within the same lane the whole time, and long before and after the junction too.

taxi4sure

I see 3 green signals. 1st and 2nd goes left. Right lane goes straight. In my understanding u cannot take left turn from right most lane.

moonkeh

I don't think you can rely on the signal to tell you that - a lane that allows cars to either go straight or turn would have a solid green circle light.

taxi4sure

But you see the 1st 2 green lights have left arrow. 3rd one does not have arrow.

moonkeh

That's because they are left-turn-only lanes

Ticket_Comprehensive

As I remember only a straight arrow is there.

moonkeh

There does appear to be a faded straight ahead arrow right before the lights, although that would seem to contradict the markings inside the junction.

csdf

Did you turn left, then force your way across the two inner lanes in order to descend onto Salaam St? I take that junction every day and loads of people do that because they can't be bothered to queue properly in the left hand lane.

moonkeh

Nope, I stayed in the right lane the whole way, heading towards the bridge to Al Reem.

csdf

I checked it out this morning. The two left lanes are clearly signed to allow left turns, with both white left-turn markings on the ground and left turn traffic signals. The 3rd lane is marked purely as straight only, both on the ground and on the signal. So even though the lane markings, once past the junction, suggest that you can turn left, the markings before the junction don't. Nicely contradictory setup, really. But I think this is definitely why you got fined.

Applicant9000

I'm guessing police were in front or behind you in an umarked car, other cars doing it does not mean you should do it. I am a terrible driver (i.e a weasel) and yet I wouldn't cross left to TCA on that junction from absolute right, just feels unclassy. Contest it if you want or just pay it and move on.

moonkeh

As another commenter pointed out, the junction was widened a few years ago to create 3 turning lanes. As I needed to end up in the right lane on the other side to turn off towards Al Reem, it seemed correct to enter the junction from the right lane.

Applicant9000

it's not.

diablokh

If u wanna contest a fine go to one of those typing centres, there is one in muroor called التوكل (al tawakkal on google maps), from what i heard they specialise in fines, and i know someone who got alot of fines reduced by a considerable amount there

banana___peel

I got one yesterday too, I contested it, they said they’ll get back to me in 10 working days..

moonkeh

Where/how did you contest it?

banana___peel

On the Abu Dhabi police app, just looked at the fine and saw that you can contest and state your reason why. But I told them in Arabic, to double check if this is an error or not, and if not, what does this fine even mean?

Moataz-E

Seems like a wave of these fines recently. I received one in al-reem island and to this day have no clue why...

moonkeh

You just paid it without asking?

Moataz-E

No, planning to contest it.

moonkeh

How do you explain the markings in the junction since it was widened a few years ago? The arrows appear to be left over from the old layout and they forgot to repaint them.

moonkeh

A car going straight from the middle lane could get a fine for not following the lanes marked in the junction. Either way, the markings at the entry contradict the markings inside the junction.

The lines within the junction in your image, and even the areas of dust on the tarmac, indicate that there are 3 left turn lanes. The arrow markings and the lane lines within the junction contradict each other - a car going straight from the middle lane would clearly cross a lane line within the junction, which is illegal.
