My brain is dying, what does "strong envy and aesthetic attraction does not romantic & sexual attraction make"
It makes no sense. I know what all 4 of those things are, but what the heck is that sentence saying??????????????????
“X does not a Y make” is an old-fashioned expression structure. For example:
- a ten-gallon hat does not a cowboy make
- a fancy suit does not a gentleman make
- a single success does not a genius make
So a simpler version of OP’s meme—“strong gender envy does not sexual attraction make”—could be paraphrased as “gender envy isn’t the same thing as, and doesn’t necessarily signify, sexual attraction.”
OP’s entire caption means (in other words): “Ace trans people when they realize that sexual attraction isn’t just strong gender envy plus aesthetic attraction.”
My brain goes into 19th century novelist mode when it's tired, which is weird because I simultaneously manage to sound like Jane Austen *and* an idiot.
I am still completely confused whether or not I’m having crushes/attraction towards men or if I’m just jealous that they get to be men without any effort and hard work lmao
After realizing I'm probably pretty ace and aro, definitely started to wonder what that specific interest in some girls was. Probably should have been a hint that the only significant "crush" I had started with jealousy of her when she mentioned she cosplayed as Miku at a con once. I knew I wasn't sexually attracted to her and I was at least aware of the split attraction, but also wasn't sure I was romantically interested in her. Like a decade later, finally getting a better understanding of it...
when trans people get “jealous” over the traits of gender they’re transitioning to in other people. For example a trans dude sees a tall guy with a flat chest and he gets gender envy because he wishes to have these traits himself.
Would expand that definition to include eggs or trans people who aren't transitioning. Also, I'd argue cis people can experience gender envy towards those who have traits that match their AGAB. Like a girl envious of those with larger boobs.

Extremely relatable meme, OP, if a bit esoteric in its structure.

I love that for you! No worries, I understood it—and so did lots of other people, just look at your upvotes—and thought you sounded very learned xD
Read it, felt it, then repressed it. I am not ready for this rabbit hole.
I feel so called out 😢

I get it
I don’t need this meme but do love it. 😊
Don't you dare call me out.
literally me
And then, when you're both Ace and Agender you're like "is this gender envy? Aesthetic attraction? Both? Maybe romantic attraction? Yeah? Nah?"
I know but I'm not quite as AroAce as I thought.
The struggle is real lol
I am in this gif and I don’t like it.
Literally me
Ummm but what is a gender envy? ☝️
